what languages do you speak? English. More Spanish than I give myself credit for (I can understand a lot of it and don't trust my speech, but if I can relax I can piece together some things) and I'm learning Norwegian on Duolingo sort of.

do you have any kids? do you want any? I have them and wanted them, but I don't think I grasped the full scope of what it means to be a parent. At first it's like "oh, a baby!" and then you realize you are helping shape the history of a person who will be an adult and it's a LOT of fucking pressure.

cold weather or hot weather? hot, which is helpful since I live in a sometimes swelteringly hot city

you're at an amusement park. what ride are you going on first? The last time I tried that I did the swings and I almost had a panic attack, literally. I can't handle any rides anymore without feeling like I'm gonna faint or die.

what's your go-to hairstyle/how do you wear your hair most days? I pull it back and slick a clip in it. I feel like time is nigh to shave it all off again, but I'm fighting the urge because growing out a buzz is my least favorite thing.

you've just been handed $1000 but you have to spend it on clothes. where are you shopping? I'm not really into clothes much for myself. I have two pairs of the same jeans, three pairs of the same shorts, and multiple black shirts and black tank tops. It's literally like a uniform. I'm Suuuuper picky about fabrics, tags, the "feel" of material now. That said, I do love fashion, and love digging at the thrifts, so I'd be picking out clothes for others there!

22 for your spotify wrapped

22. Casual - Chappell Roan

Oh thank GOD I get to talk about this I was really hoping someone would pick this one. No artist frustrated me more this year than Chappell Roan. So this will double as a review of a particular song but also venting my feelings about this artist and her reception over the last year or so. I'm gonna have to talk about a lot of outside stuff that doesn't have to do with the particular song, but hopefully you guys are used to that by now. I read a lot of Pitchfork in the early 2010s, I'm sorry.

Chappell Roan is very obviously going to be a star. Sooner rather than later. My introduction to her was on New Year's Eve in 2022. I was at a friend's house, and somebody showed me a few of her songs. Casual was among them, but we'll get to that soon. The most lasting memory of that first exposure is being drunk and dancing around a friend's living room to a song called "Femininomenon." It felt affirming and empowering and all of those buzzwords; dancing to a catchy beat and lyrics about how boys stink, dolled up and embraced and accepted and welcomed as Feminine. From what I can tell, this is the exact experience Chappell Roan wants people to have while listening to her music. It was basically the perfect introduction.

A few weeks later, I remembered Femininomenon while I was at work, and couldn't get the hook out of my head, so I hastily added it to my general playlist and queued it up. Friends, I know if this post ever breaches containment I'll be torn to shreds, but that song is Ass. I'm sorry, but calling something "camp" does not excuse bad creative decisions. If we are going to bring out the torches for Taylor Swift writing "in the pub we, are watching rugby" then I demand the same for "hit it like rom-pom pa-pom, get it hot like Papa John." It sounds like music for a Dreamworks Dance Party Ending if they made an animated adaptation of Drag Race. It is a testament to the power of Friendship and Alcohol that I ever enjoyed it.

Later, I listened to a few more of her songs, and found a frustrating and recurring theme. They were all better than Femininomenon by a considerable margin, but had very samey lyrics that felt like they were treading the same ground over and over again. It just felt repetitive. I dunno, it just bothered me for some reason. What were they about? Oh, well, you see, the thing is...um, well, about that, uh, ya see, what I'm trying to say is...*writes "I will not wade into Queer Discourse on a Spotify Wrapped review" 100 times on a chalkboard* Sigh. For an artist who I saw heralded as a "new queer icon" it was annoying that most of the songs I first heard were about how much dating men sucks! To be fair, she also does have songs about feeling liberated being with women, but hearing Femininomenon, My Kink is Karma, and Casual, all complain about men just reminded me that she may be a queer icon, but not for people like me. Much in the same way that I was put off by a girl in college saying I "couldn't understand Mitski because she writes about the quintessential experience of girlhood," I was also put off by the assertion that I must make way for a new icon, and give deference and reverence to a narrative that excludes me.

Wait, did I mention Casual there? Aw fuck! This was supposed to be a review for that song!

So uh, the thing is, Casual is basically a perfect reinvention of the classic lovelorn country song? Yeah, they play up Chappell's southern roots in a lot of her music and promotional material, but it comes through crystal clear on this song. The structure and melody feel exactly like the old country songs I'd hear at my grandparents' house, but the lyrics are youthful and conversational and explicit, with the chorus opening with "knee deep in the passenger seat, and you're eating me out, is it casual now?" The sleek, modern production keeps the song from feeling out of place among her other, more danceable singles, but the lyrics and vocals are still powerful and raw. I derided Femininomenon for having lyrics that boil down to "boys stink" but Casual feels like a genuine and specific grievance. It feels lived-in and genuine in a way that reminds me of Taylor Swift's "All Too Well," which if you know anything about my tastes or about Swift's fandom in general, you know that is a gargantuan compliment. Chappell's vocals are always a highlight when they're allowed to shine, but they fucking soar on Casual. When she hits the final "go to hell" on the second(!) bridge it feels so cathartic, and so earned, and feels like you just got done venting about a situation that had been eating you up for ages, which is precisely the tone she seemed to be going for. She fucking nailed it. This song is impeccable. I cannot say enough good things about it.

So why did I spend so many words bitching earlier? Well, for one, honesty. When she blows up even more, which she will, I don't want to pretend I was a Day 1 Ride or Die. I want the record to show that I have some Concerns. But the thing is, I opened this review by saying that Chappell Roan frustrated me. Not that she made me angry, not that she annoyed me, but that she frustrated me. That's because I found some aspects of her songwriting and presentation (and fandom but that's not her fault) grating, but I also saw obvious and undeniable talent. Even My Kink is Karma is a fine song on its own, but the sins of Femininomenon stain it too, in that the pleasure (explicitly, in the former) comes from talking down the shitty men Chappell has to deal with. Many of her other songs carry the even more egregious sin; corniness. While nothing as bad as Papa John, singing about "fugly jeans" and, uh, the entire bridge of Red Wine Supernova bring down otherwise good songs that are more concerned with sharing winks with a specific audience in a specific moment in time, than creating art that holds up on its own merit alone.

A couple years ago, there was buzz about a young up-and-comer named Olivia Rodrigo, maybe you've heard of her? She blew up with a gargantuan hit ballad filled with melodramatic teen angst and verses that were sung in cursive, years after that style became a punchline. "Well, this is a bit shit," I thought. But then when I listened to her album, there were a few tracks that I liked, most of them being more energetic with some pop-punk influence. "It would be cool if she went down this power-pop road, she's super well-suited for it," I thought again, though I assumed she'd try to chase Phoebe Bridgers in the Hunt to be the Heir to the Swift Throne. I think I was wrong on that one! From what I've heard of Olivia's newest stuff, she's bringing the shiny guitars and bratty/aggressive vocals to the forefront, and I really enjoy it! It is really nice to be pleasantly surprised, to be glad to be wrong about something.

That is why I'm hard on Chappell Roan. That is why I find the overwhelming praise irritating. Olivia Rodrigo received endless praise for one of her worse songs, and caught lawsuits and plagiarism allegations for one of her best. It is a goddamn miracle that she resisted the urge to double down on the sadgirl schtick. Chappell Roan has a terrific voice, biting lyrics, razor-sharp pop sensibilities, star presence that most would kill for, and can write hooks that rival the very best of my lifetime. The girl is money. Which is why it worries me that most of the praise I've seen for her focuses on such surface-level criteria. Quirky presentation, referential lyrics, and a crosshair on the current queer zeitgeist can certainly help your success and give you a few trendy tiktok audios. But she's got skills that can carry her forever, and no song in her still-brief discography showcases them better than Casual. In a few years, The Youth will inevitably laugh at what we now consider trendy. And Casual will still be a perfect song. If I live to be 100 I'll still be listening to it. I hope Chappell Roan makes me look stupid.

Okay, so my thoughts on RUSH!:

I asked for a meal and Måneskin delivered a BANQUET! It’s a really good album overall: the entire band was on their A game for this one!! I really like the direction they took and the recent interview with Zane Lowe where they talked about the creative process makes me love it even more!

FUCK every basic bitch hating on this album because of the leaked lyrics!!!! Songs are not poetry and the instrumentals / vocal delivery can really elevate the entire thing!!!

Vic was born to play bass, Thomas is a legend, Damiano honestly has one of my favorite voices ever and Ethan is so good I just want him to [redacted] [crash sounds] [gunshots] [dogs barking]

My two cents song by song - that no one asked for - is below the cut

- Own My Mind is already in 3 different playlists of mine. Can’t wait to hear it liveeeee 9.5/10

- Tom Morello had less than 30 seconds and delivered everything in Gossip! Thomas is honestly so fucking talented, I’m gonna cry. Lyrics slap, instruments slap, promo slaped. 9/10

- My first hot take is Timezone. I already knew I would have problems with this songs when I heard it on the tiktok promo. Weakest link the first 5 songs. Emo as fuck, sounds like something a Wrapped Tour band would play (derogatory). Gets points because I can imagine a very aggravated Sony executive listening to “I don’t give a fuck about the contracts that I signed” and I giggle. Also, I miss being a teenager 7/10

- DON’T GET ME STARTED on BLA BLA BLA. Silly as fuck but I LOVE IT. God put Vic De Angelis on this earth just so she could EAT this bass line!!!! My fave along with Own My Mind 9.8/10

- Baby Said has old Strokes vibes so it’s right up my alley. Again, not very strong lyrics but the instrumental and Damiano’s vocals 🫶 8.5/10

- Second hot take: I appreciate its political commentary but Gasoline was never my cup of tea. I’m being very generous calling it “political commentary” tho, they could’ve done better. Gets points because Damiano quoting Chaplin during Coachella and yelling “FORA BOLSONARO” on my concert live rent free in my head. Loses points for being too long 7.5/10

- Feel is a banger!!! @ Walk Like a Badass Playlist on Spotify, we have visitors. Also, again, THOMAS ♥️ 8/10

- I love ass shakers and I especially love ass shakers like Don’t Wanna Sleep. AGAIN, THOMAS AND VIC 8.5/10

- I can tell Damiano was drunk as fuck recording Kool Kids, ICONIC. Also super catchy 8.5/10

- Ballad Alert! If Not For You deserves an acoustic version and I will bug everyone until I get it. Automatic 9/10

- Testing my patience along with Timezone is Read Your Diary. It starts great but then it just becomes a Disney Channel song, babes. A good Disney Channel song, but still. Weakest link on the second part of the album. Gets points for the bass line and, again, because I miss being a teenager 7.5/10

- The first song in italian, Mark Chapman GOES. HARD. AS. FUCK. Instrumental is point, Damiano’s vocals are DELIVERING and ngl it hits different in italian. Makes it to my top 5 of the album 9/10

- I already loved La Fine before, so I still love it but it loses a little of it’s charm when put next to Mark Chapman ngl. I have no choice but to rate it 8.8/10

- The biggest Teatro D’ira vibe on the album is Il Dono Della Vita. A very cohesive and emotional song instrumentally, I can’t wait to read the translation. I hope this one makes it to the live setlist so I don’t have beat anyone on their team to a pulp. It also reminds me: I will never forgive them for not doing Ventanni in São Paulo but doing it in Argentina. That was a hate crime against brazilians and THEY KNOW IT. I digress. 9.5/10

- Mammamia on this album feels like seeing a cousin at a family gathering lmao. Still SLAPS tho 8/10

- My top song on Spotify Rewind in 2022 was Supermodel, so I really like it. HOWEVER, it feels very out of place on this album and it doesn’t go as hard now that we have better songs. You can tell this was a “commercial” song because the other ones are so much more well made (even the ones I don’t like as much). Still has a place in my heart tho 7.8/10

- I really loved The Loneliest when it came out and I still love it! But it suffers from the same curse as Supermodel: the new ballads are so much better. All I can think about now while listening is “I hope they don’t pass up If Not For You and Il Dono Della Vita on the live shows so they can play The Loneliest”. I know it’s gonna happen tho, so I resent it a little bit. 8/10

My Spotify Wrapped is fucking weird and like kinda accurate but also like not at all but like 2/3rds of the music I listen to isn't on Spotify anyways so like it kinda makes sense why it's not completely accurate but also like????

But like yeah this one makes perfect sense this is one of the non-weird ones, the only weird part of this is that number is way too low, I 100% listened to it more than 147 times, just most of that probably wasn't on Spotify. I listened to this on loop every day for like 2 months straight earlier this year, it was like actually a problem so like yea this is definitely my most listened to song this year.

But like, most of the rest of my top 10, uhh no??? cringe??? wuh??? guh??? The Time Has Come makes sense too tho like no complaints for the top 2, I think it's funny when it says "the time has come and so have I" and that line alone means it deserves to be at least top 2. Number 3 is like by far the most confusing on this entire list of 100 songs (you don't get to see 11-100 that would require too many screenshots and also nobody is allowed to see where Team Chaotix is on the list (the answer is it's somehow not in the top 100, and that's really embarrassing)). Vigilante is like near the very bottom of my tier list of Hiroyuki Sawano songs, like it's still good, but like, it's nowhere near #3 good, I feel like I skip it half the time it plays too so like I have no clue how it's as high as it is. Like if literally any other song composed by that guy was at #3 I wouldn't be surprised at all, but I guess I just don't listen to any of those enough on Spotify.😔 4 makes sense, Amatsu Kaze is definitely the FFXIV song that's on Spotify that I listen to the most, idk if it's my number 1 favorite, but definitely what I listen to most often. Unfortunately neither Dedicated To Moonlight, nor Athena The Tireless One are on Spotify yet otherwise at least one, if not both would probably be in this spot instead. 5 is also weird as fuck, like I love this song, world.execute(me) is definitely one of my favorite Mili songs, but I feel like it's more of a 2022 song, I feel like I've listened to sustain++ way more this year. Although I guess I do listen to it a lot more off Spotify than on Spotify so I guess it kinda makes sense but still like, I think sustain++ should be here instead. Masterpiece? more like, yea this song is a masterpiece. Yea this is one of my favorite songs of all time I've been listening to this consistently since like 2011 and I still listen to it enough to be in the top 10, really any Toaru song being super high makes sense, this is definitely my favorite one tho. This one kinda sorta makes sense, like yea I definitely do listen to Violence a lot, and it's probably my 2nd favorite Chainsaw Man song, but I think I like Chainsaw Blood a bit more, and I thought I listened to it pretty much equally, yet it's way lower down the list. Tbh I'm kinda surprised Calling for Rain isn't slightly higher, like this is another one that I listened to nonstop on loop for like an entire month, I'm satisfied that it's here though, acceptable placement. Yea Gravitation is another Toaru song, any Toaru song being high will never be a surprise, the only consistency in life is that 10 years from now I'll still be listening to Index openings and Sonic the Hedgehog music. Yea No Buts! is another Toaru song. I like how the first 10 seconds sounds like I broke into a bank and am about to die :)

THIS SONG RELEASED LESS THAN A FUCKING MONTH AGO WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME HOW IS IT SO HIGH I like the line where it says "how many liters can you bleed" because I too like the metric system and also blood. 12. Slightly surprising this is so high, I'm glad it is, one of my favorite songs for sure but like, didn't realize I still listened to it often enough to make top 20, very cool. What if Meguca and Hameru kis 13. Ok I know why this one is as high as it is because I couldn't find most Ali Project songs on Spotify until like 3 months ago, but like, this is probably in my top 5 least favorite, and also least listened to Ali Project songs so it DOES NOT deserve to be this high but also I couldn't find any of the cooler songs until recently so ;-; 14. I hate that this is probably my favorite Inabakumori song because listening to it makes me so depressed because I associate it with being depressed as fuck but like, I like it :) 15. How the FUCK is this one higher than Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet, I DON'T EVEN LIKE THIS ONE THAT MUCH, ok I mean it's still pretty good but like it's no Masterpiece. 16. Yea this one's pretty good I'm okay with this Hiroyuki Sawano song being this high, still not as good as like Club Ki3e, or Here I Am, or Brave the Ocean, or like a bunch of his other songs, but I do still feel like I listen to it a lot, DEFINITELY MORE THAN VIGILANTE, FUCK YOU VIGILANTE I HATE YOU, I FUCKING HATE YOU!!! 17. sigh this one's okay I do like this one, but still definitely not peak Ali Project, but like, I like it more than the last one at least so that's cool! 18. YEAAAAAA SONIC WOOOOOOOOOOO fucking took long enough. Idk if this is necessarily my favorite Sonic song this year, and if I included non-Spotify listens it definitely wouldn't be my most listened to, but like it's probably like top 10 Sonic songs of all time so honestly the real issue here is that it's not way higher. 19. WOOOOOOOO YEAAAAAAA THE COOLER BOCCHI SONG YEAAAAAAA this should be higher 100%, I do listen to it more frequently outside of Spotify so I get why it's not in like the top 10, but if this was counting all of the music I've listened to on all platforms over the last year, this would easily be in the top 10, I listen to this constantly. 20. I'm very surprised this one isn't higher, I feel like I listen to it a lot, and it's the only x0o0x_ song on Spotify that I really like. I definitely like their cover of Big Brother more, but unfortunately Spotify doesn't think that song exists, it also doesn't think 2/3rds of the music I actually listen to exists so I think Spotify is kinda dumb and stupid and stupid.

I think this may actually be my least favorite of the Drakengard 3 vocal songs, like it's still good I still enjoy it a lot, but like why is this the only one on Spotify??? But like yeah Black Song White Scales is definitely probably the best one I don't have hot takes. 23. WOOOOOOO YEAAAAA this is definitely my favorite Inabakumori song that doesn't make me depressed af, wish it was higher Rainy Boots is kinda like the anti-depression song. 24. Shut up, shut the fuck up it's good I don't care I will kill you shut up now. 25. It's so sad that this is the lowest Toaru song on here, this is like my 3rd favorite one yet it's this far down, this is so sad, I'm licherally going to move onto the next song. 26. If I had used Spotify in 2020 this would've probably been my most listened to song that year, and it probably would've still been in the top 5 in 2021, so good to know that maybe by 2030 it'll finally be outside of my top 100. But like yeah Reol kinda pog and this is definitely my favorite song of her's, should've been higher. 27. This one is so odd, because it is entirely not my normal style of music, yet I still like it for some reason and clearly still listen to it a lot and I have no clue why I like it because I really shouldn't. I think it may literally just be because it's from a game that I like because I also like almost the entire Madworld OST and that's all the same type of music. 28. UMINEKO YEAAAA UMINEKO WOOOOOO FINALLY YEAAAA unfortunately Occultics no Majo isn't on spotify otherwise it would easily, and permanently be in the top 10 and also would've been for the last 3 years, but like this one's still really good, it's an alright consolation prize, but nothing can compete with peak, it's truly so unfair. Very surprised that Kina no Kaori ~ Ai no Shiren isn't higher tho, like I don't think it's even in the top 100, but I do definitely listen to it way more off Spotify so I guess I probably shouldn't be too surprised. Not enough Umineko representation on this list, next year I need to make sure to exclusively listen to M. Zacky so I can meet my minimum required Umineko threshold. 29. I'm not sure whether to be surprised at how low this is, or how high it is, because I fucking love this song and have been listening to it, along with the rest of the Sonic CD soundtrack a ton in the last 2 months, but prior to very recently this was one of my less listened to Sonic songs. I guess I've just been listening to it enough recently to put it this high, very epic, will never complain about a Sonic song being so high on the list. 30. THERE IT IS GARY THERE IT IS!!! This is probably my favorite Chainsaw Man song, so I'm really surprised that both Kick Back and Violence are both way higher, I guess it's probably another case of me listening to it more often outside Spotify without realizing it.

1604 - hi from 2023!

This past year...

who were your favorite singers, musicians, or bands? This just reminds me of how much my Spotify Wrapped struggled because the only thing they could recap for me is how much I listened to BTS and the boys’ 2022 solo ventures hahaha. But now that I think about it, there was also Beyoncé’s Renaissance. Other faves were Seventeen and NewJeans; and new discoveries I would say were Tiger JK, Paul Blanco, and SE SO NEON.

what were some of your favorite foods? If there was also a Food Delivery Wrapped, I’m so confident chicken and waffles would top my list lol. Apart from that, what I’m gonna say is gonna sound so basic lol but I think I ordered McDonald’s more times in 2022 than in my entire life overall; then for the last, it goes without saying but there was also sushi/sashimi.

what was your favorite dessert? Didn’t have many dessert discoveries this year although I did follow a ton of local bakeries that I just didn’t have the time to order from in 2022. In any case, my ‘favorite’ for the year would probably just be Starbucks’ chocolate chip macadamia cookie.

what was the best thing that happened to you? I’d say all the growth and experience I’ve gained from being a manager. I’ve talked about it before but my promotion was as premature as it gets – I was called to step up to the plate because nobody else was capable at such a critical time; nobody in the company gets promoted within a year. But I didn’t want to leave the group more shorthanded than we already were, so I took up the challenge and it’s only opened more doors and opportunities since then. 

Apart from that, finally being able to afford trips/vacations even if just out-of-town was also significant for me. I’ve gone to Zambales twice with friends this year, and first weekend of 2023 I am also taking my family to this quaint little place in Tanay for a quick weekend getaway, all out of my pocket. It feels great, not gonna lie!

what was the worst thing that happened to you? Kimi passing away. I couldn’t grieve him the way I would have wanted to because of work reasons that I am still and will always be infuriated about; though I made sure he got the farewell he deserved thanks to this superb pet cremation company that helped us out, even picking him up at 3 AM. That sweet, sweet boy...14 years by my side. I’m forever grateful.

how have you grown as a person? So much. I think 2021 me would be very shocked to find out how extroverted I became in the last 12 months.

what have you learned? That everybody puts their pants one leg at the time. Considering I used to be extremely shy at work (to the point where I was wondering why the fuck I wanted to be in PR), this was my most significant and most helpful learning for the year. I went from running away from clients and hiding behind my manager to being the first to argue with a client if I didn’t like what they were saying lol.

how old did you turn? 24.

what did you do for your birthday? On the day of, I rested at home and took my family out to a ramen dinner. That same weekend, my friends and I drove off to Zambales to get some lovely vitamin sea. Then I sprained my ankle heh.

what did you accomplish? Successfully held major events, bought a new phone, dyed my hair for the first time, DID NOT QUIT MY JOB(!!!), worked even more towards happiness. 2022 was definitely more of a business-as-usual year compared to 2021 but there were lots of good things that came out of it too. 

where did you live? Still at the same home I’ve lived in for 14 years.

who was your best friend? Angela, Reena, Andi.

made a new best friend? I’d say Reena got ‘promoted’ to best friend status this year, haha. 2021 was largely a year of getting to know one another and just fangirling over the boys; but as I got more settled into the fandom, we were able to connect beyond BTS in 2022.

lost someone close to you? I lost a great-uncle this year. Was not necessarily close with him bond-wise as our blood relationship is already quite distant (he was a cousin of my late great-grandma), but he was family nonetheless.

I was dissatisfied with my job which seemed to never cease giving me major things to work on all while forcing me to go overtime multiple times a week, and I didn’t have my best friend anymore. It really felt like drowning/suffocating at the time, but the difference I made this year is to ensure I was doing things to address the sadness instead of wallowing in it.

Thing you did: Trips with friends. Also that ‘talk’ I had with Kimi the night before he died – I knew he was fading away and knew he had less than 24 hours. So when everyone was asleep I got him alone in the living room and just talked, and talked and talked and talked to him. I knew I wouldn’t have wanted to say all my thanks the following day when my entire family would’ve already been there to count down the seconds before he went.

Final Questions!

Would you say this past year has been a good year overall? It was great! But I also think I could have done more. I focused way too much on my promotion and not fucking up and trying to meet everyone at work’s expectations that I unwittingly sacrificed many things in my personal life and sometimes at the expense of my well-being too. It’s something I started to address and change by the end of the year, and something I’ll be even more aggressive about in 2023.

What are your goals for the new year? Actually have a financial goal, explore more new restaurants instead of going to the same places and ordering the same favorites, lesser inclinations to buy merch especially since the boys are on break. And update my closet!

How old will you turn next year? I’ll be 25! Did you make any big mistakes this past year? I was still really bad at saving. Do you have any big changes coming? I’ll have to see if this is the year I’ll be resigning.

How will you be celebrating New Year's Eve this year? That was last night - we hosted dinner for extended family, I skipped out on the 12 AM fireworks to be downstairs with the dogs and to serenade them with karaoke LOL, and I drank lots and lots of soju. What was the best day of this year for you, and why? October 15, enjoyed the Busan show with a group bigger than our usual.  What did you spend the most time doing this year? Jungkook and His Cover Songs: Is “10000 Hours” about Jimin?

Disclaimer: The following post includes theories, lyric and numeric analysis, plus my personal opinions, so please don’t take anything seriously. I’m too lazy to upload photos and videos for the moments I mentioned here, but I’m sure you know about them all. Any Jikooker must know. And I’m not Korean or a Korean culture expert, I just know as much as any Stan Twitter ARMY knows about their culture.

Maybe one of the biggest Jikook moments of 2021 so far, is where Jimin jumped into Jungkook’s hug, in Lee Hyun’s Vlog. But the other moment on that Vlog was even more significant; Jungkook was singing “Anyone” from Justin Bieber’s new album, and Jimin was harmonizing with him while holding on his shirt. I don’t want to mention their interview moment singing “Peaches” because I know this song is super popular in South Korea right now and somehow it doesn’t count as a moment. But it’s safe to say that Jikook has something special with his songs, and JK in particular always was invested in him. 

JK & JB

The reason behind Jungkook’s devotion to Justin Bieber was always a big question for me, and I got my answer not long time ago. Jungkook’s playlist for Melon Radio Station included a song from JB’s new album named “Lonely”. This is one of the most personal songs any artist can ever make, and JK recommended it to his audience. Here are the lyrics of “Lonely” by Justin Bieber:

They criticized the things I did as an idiot kid

These lyrics made me think of one specific thing, the thing that JK and JB have in common: They started their careers at a very young age, and their lives have been under the scrutiny of so many people. These people judged and criticized them but never tried to understand them. The lyrics are straightforward and leave no place for interpretation. By recommending this song, JK showed that he had (and probably still has) the same experiences in his life, and I think the reason he recommends or covers JB’s songs more than any other artist is that he has many things in common with him, and feels connected to his songs. 

This can lead us to another theory: By covering a Justin Bieber song, Jungkook shares something about himself with us, something that he can’t express directly.

Jungkook is interested in JB’s songs, but he is not the only one. As I said earlier in this post, Jimin shares the same taste with Jungkook, and my receipt is not just that “Anyone” or “Peaches” harmonizing moments, but also Jimin’s Spotify playlists. Since 2017 (or earlier, I’m not sure about this part) he has added some JB songs to his official playlist, and even his current playlist (July 2021) has two JB songs. And also let’s not forget the fact that Jikook as a subunit started in 2014 with a JB cover. Yes, I’m talking about “Mistletoe” and as you may know, Jimin translated the lyrics of this song to Korean. 

10000 Hours

Nearly 700 words and I haven’t started yet! The subject of this post was supposed to be the connections between “10000 hours” cover and Jikook but this prelude was necessary to clarify all the aspects of the topic and we find out how JB is special for JK and Jimin and how they (especially Jungkook) feel connected to him. Anyways, back to 10000 hours:

Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber released this Grammy winner song in October 2019. Here are the lyrics:

As you can see, the lyrics are 100% romantic, and the singers including JB, have dedicated this song to their lovers. Also, their girlfriends/wives have a cameo in the MV, which leaves no place for speculation for the context of the song: Even though the uncertainties always exist and no one knows about the future, our love is strong and will stay strong regardless of time. 

The Cover and the Theories

Nearly one year later, on July 28th, 2020, Jungkook surprised ARMYs with a short video he tweeted at 11:56 AM. That video was a 49 seconds cover of 10000 hours. A few minutes later, he deleted the tweet (apparently with the advertisement excuses, because it was tweeted from an iPhone and they have a contract with Samsung). Later that night, Jungkook released the full version on Sound Cloud and tweeted the link at 11:47 PM. 

Jikookers discovered numerous theories that day about the times of both tweets; if you add the digits of the time, the result is “13” for both tweets 1+1+4+7=13, 1+1+5+6=13, and as you already know “13” is Jikook’s magic number. Also, the first video he tweeted was 49 seconds and 4+9=13. But in my opinion, this theory is not strong. I know that numerology is very popular in Korean culture but still, all of this can be coincidences, but the other things I’m going to bring up are most likely not. 

28th July 2020 was the 7th anniversary of the first Jikook selca posted after debut. This also might be a coincidence and to be honest, it cannot be a strong link to make a connection with Jikook, but worths sharing. 

The next thing that many Jikookers also pointed out, was related to the title of the song. The lyrics say “10000 hours and 10000 more” and 20000 hours after the 28th of July is 8th November 2022. As you may know. Jikookers believe November 8th is a significant date for Jikook. I believe this can be a coincidence either, and it’s very unlikely of Jungkook to do such calculations (Koreans are interested in numbers when it comes to days and dates, but counting hours is not usual in any culture. Other than that, I’m still doubtful about the origins of the November 8th theory because we have nothing other than two tweets and G.C.F Tokyo release date and their hotel room in Tokyo which still can be coincidental). But I don’t deny these theories because even as a coincidence, it’s still very interesting. 

And the next theory is connected to the “Red Moon”. On 27th July 2018, a total lunar eclipse happened all over the world, which became known as the red moon. At that time, BTS were in Malta, and on the same night, Jikook were watching the red moon on a boat. They shared plenty of photos and videos of that moment and I’m sure as a Jikooker you have seen them all and you know that night had a very romantic mood (BigHit words, not mine) for Jikook. So, a second anniversary for that night and the day after that night can be a significant date to release a very romantic cover. Is this a coincidence too? I think we had many of them already.

And last but not least is something connected to Korean culture. You probably know that 1000 days anniversaries are very important for Koreans and they celebrate them along with real anniversaries of the important dates in their lives. And guess what? 27th July 2020 is 1000 days after 31 October 2017. This day is the day Jikook’s travel to Tokyo ended and they posted their couply mirror selca on Twitter with flower bouquet emoji. Despite the one-day difference (the same case for the red moon anniversary), this is not a minor event or small coincidence. I believe Jungkook posted “10000 hour” cover for this reason and based on this, the other theories I mentioned earlier can be true either. 

The lyrics hit different if you read them again, after knowing this fact. Right? I don’t want to make this post much longer but before wrapping up, I want to talk about the lyrics of “Anyone” by JB (the song Jikook were harmonizing in Lee Hyun’s Vlog):

If you read the lyrics, you will notice that the context is very similar to “10000 hours”. It talks about the uncertainties of a beautiful love or in other words: No matter what the future brings to us, this love will last forever. 

This context of uncertainty and unknown future for a romance is a common concept in many of the songs Jungkook has covered and it’s not limited to the Justin Bieber covers he has done and maybe this concept can be the topic for my next analysis.

Here's my Spotify wrapped and also a PSA

I need to start with some weird backstory. I hate Dream and the dsmp and actively avoid and ignore that content. I don't mind seeing nice fanart and there's nothing wrong with liking it, I just have bad associations from my ex so I'd rather avoid it personally. I do watch Wilbur Soot's videos but don't regularly listen to his music. This information will be important later on.

Spotify wrapped 2021

Okay makes sense so far, The Beatles threw me off and I blame @al-arts for that. He's also why Elton John is my new favorite and heartrob.

Lemon Demon and Tally Hall are just always bangers, and remind me of Oingo Boingo on hallucinogenics. I also mostly have @turing-tested to thank for those 🤜 thanks bro

I was obsessed with Mother Mother, still am. I'm actually going to their Arizona concert in January, 2022. One of my favorite playlists is just all their songs on Spotify and I can sing along to every one.

My eyes BULGED a bit at 70,000 minutes but we'll get to that. Seriously though, Mother Mother.

Out of 1,054 they were my favorite BY FAR. And it seems I was theirs too! Top .005%?? I was thinking, that's gotta be like 10 people right..? No. No it's more like 35,000, still though!

I also listened to A LOT of them.. actually I listened to A LOT of music in general.

20,000 minutes of Mother Mother... That's 13.4 DAYS of Mother Mother.

70 thousand minutes in total...

42.... Days... I am mentally ill

#4 Steampunk?? Huh?? Well I looked up Spotify's playlist for the genre and... Yea, This FUCKS. I still can't explain it, I understand it but.. yea, no, I can't explain it.

#5 Broadway - I know it's an acquired taste, but seriously I don't care who you are go listen to Hadestown. Right now seriously. I listened to a lot of that this year, also the Jekll and Hyde musical, fantastic piece of male Opera and an interesting take on the story (though not totally loyal to the original) and of course I listened to a lot of Phantom of The Opera, my grandma use to listen to and watch it with me, I sing Opera now because of her :)

And now the PSA we've all been waiting for..

#3 Dream SMP??? What?? What does that even mean? and how is that a genre? and most importantly?

WHY IS IT IN MY TOP 5? WHY IS A FANDOM I ACTIVELY AVOID, A "GENRE" IN (MY) SPOTIFY WRAPPED? WTF???

That was my first thought, then I calmed myself down, there had to be a rational explanation. I like Wilbur but not his music, only a few songs a WHILE ago... But... No, it still didn't make sense.

So I sent it to the group chat, low and behold two other people also had it in their top 5, with no idea what it meant, one of which also didn't like dream.

So I put on my detective cap and... Guys....

Okay so Spotify has two genre related features you should know about.

It allows any song to classify as multiple genres, which makes sense, most songs could be more than one genre.

It also allows new genres to be created, which also makes sense! Genres are created and songs are reclassified all the time.

The problem occured when somehow, someone, submitted and was approved for a genre called 'Dream SMP'

That genre includes these 100 songs.

Listen, I understand having fandom centric spaces and art but this could have been a playlist, it shouldn't be a genre.

Most of the songs on there are just general shippy songs or indie rock, nothing on the playlist is explicitly about dsmp.

The only things that would 'fit' under a genre like that is fan songs, and Wilbur Soot's music if he agreed to that.

2020

On January 1, 2020, I went to LNHQ. The holiday party had happened a few days earlier – a sorta-epic “booze cruise” with Lana Del Rey off the Catalina coast. Everybody nursed hangovers on flights back home, and then bugged off to celebrate their new years with their people.

The office was spotless – just a few dust motes floating across the afternoon sunlight in the conference room. I grabbed a piece of chalk and wrote “What if…” on the green board. It was intended as a turn-the-page talking point. OM and I had had a sit-down after we got back from Cali. Good talk, honestly. He’s well-versed in stuff that I do not understand, and he’s driving the proverbial bus as the new LN CEO. Lotta heartfelt questions from him, lotta heartfelt idks from me. “You gotta…” and “Yeah, I suck at that, but what about…” Some bourbon later, we adjourned. “Love you, dude” and “love you back, man.” Let’s meet next week and ok.

So that’s why I was there. What are we doing? What if… What if we actually try hard? What if ECM keeps killing it on Instagram? What if Jane and Trevor come back? What if we move to a new location, and the corporate and content wings find a new synergy? What if all of the sponsorships pan out? And O’s settlement with Adidas? Sky’s the limit, right? Let your imagination wander. I mean, what if Fiona Apple puts out a new album in 2020, and it’s not just great, but better than The Idler Wheel, which was the best album of 2012?

Seriously. What if?

Or what if the entire world breaks?

That wasn’t in my head back then.

It’s December now. And we’re in a global pandemic, which is getting worse (or at least not getting measurably better) every day. This year has been indescribably difficult for all of us, particularly the ones personally affected by Covid-19. And it has been difficult for businesses across every sector, particularly entertainment. Seen a show lately? Nope? Me, neither. At the beginning of the summer, I paid Laura Marling to watch a stream of her performance at Union Chapel in London. Seemed cool then, seems irrelevant now.

We can’t help artists/bands, really, until we can see them again. And who knows when that will be? Next summer? Next fall? Maybe 2022 before we all feel safe in massive crowds again (even with masks)? Maybe never? Until then, we have streaming services. And … woof. That’s an Apple/Spotify cart that I’d prefer not to upend, mainly because it benefits me, but it’s worth some words.

I’m a Spotify person. My home team is comprised of six Spotify people. We pay, collectively, $14.99/month to stream almost any music ever recorded and released. That’s around $2.50 per person per month. Pretty good deal, right? For sure. Here’s the problem: Spotify pays $0.003 per stream. That’s 1/3 of a penny. If you’re a Zeppelin or a Beatle or a Stone, that’s just a nice little dividend. (Keith is like, “Hey, baby, I love Spot-ify. I bought this sweet fedorah with that check.”) If you’re somebody else, somebody less established in the Rock-royalties pantheon, you’re probably not buying a hat. You’re probably hoping that Spotify might, might, pick up your next cup of coffee – or one at the end of the year, I don’t know how that works.

Spotify does this year-end Wrapped thing. You get a weird Snapchat/Instagram video that tells you stuff. Your most listened-to artist/band, your also-rans, etc. You also get some pretty sweet virtual (and unearned) affirmation.

My win was this.

911 seems good. It’s better than 11. The green-dotify didn’t specify whom those new artists were, which sucks, but I have a decent idea. And I’m guessing that many of those artists have Bandcamp pages, and I didn’t visit any of those. Actually, that’s not true. I did visit the Car Seat Headrest page because Will put out three different iterations of the new record on streaming, cd, and vinyl. It was mostly the same – alternate sequences and some alternate versions of certain tracks. The alternate versions weren’t on Bandcamp. You had to buy all three formats to get the whole record. Or you had to be ok with the iteration that you got. Or you could just find the alternate versions on YouTube. Sure, they wouldn’t be on your phone, but you got to hear them.

That’s not me being petty or cheap. I could’ve bought the cd and vinyl iterations. And I could’ve bought alot of music on Bandcamp, but I couldn’t have bought 911-new-artists worth. How many could I have bought? Not sure. How would I have decided? Not sure. I’m glad that I discovered that many sounds, and I’m concerned that most of those sounds were produced by real people struggling to create in this challenging (intentionally undersold the adjective there, but “terrible” and “horrible” seemed trite) environment. I’m more glad than concerned, if you follow the dichotomy. And I’m not happy about it. Having identified the problem, however, I’m flummoxed about a solution.

I listened to alot of music in 2020. #WFH #FTW (And two hashtag sentence fragments make a sentence. I just checked the LN style manual. Jane said ok.)

Alessandro Deljavan is an Italian pianist, who was born a few months before I graduated high school. He recorded Erik Satie’s piano works. My best friend and I listened to that alot this year – she calls it “sleeping music.” Miles Davis, obv. Early-covid, I made a chronologically-tight playlist of his pre-Columbia material. Mid-covid, I started a chronologically-tight and still-unfinished playlist of his fusion material. Jenny Lin? I think that’s a holdover from last year, when sleeping music was her Chopin’s Nocturnes. CSH was my lawnmowing soundtrack. Daniel Baremboim? No idea, maybe I hit his Mendelssohn’s Leider ohne Worte too many times during the days.

Minutes listened and top genre are what I want to talk about, real quick, before I get list-y. 115,891 minutes is 1,931 or so hours, and 80.5 or so days. I listened to two and a half months straight of music this year. That’s not a brag or even a humble brag. It’s a fact. And most of that (trust me here, I ran my ass off to playlists) was Indie Rock – the aforementioned “new artists.” How can I help them, besides streaming their amazing work over and over and over, and championing them here? Shouting indirectly at Spotify on social media seems unlikely to change a flawed system. Anybody with more constructive ideas can share them below the line.

Ok, the list.

I did it. I broke the unspoken rule (nobody gets #1 twice), and I’m ok with it. 2020 was a unique year. Up top, that’s Fiona from a Zoom call over the summer. She didn’t really know about Liner Notes, but she was willing to talk while walking her dogs. I wasn’t sure that Fetch the Bolt Cutters would be the album of the year at that point, but it was a nice chat. Tbh, I struggled to finalize the list because any of the Top 10 could’ve been Top.
