"Camille Claudel. Nata nel 1864 e morta nel 1943 dimenticata da tutti in un ospedale psichiatrico. Cosa ha fatto? Viene a studiare a Parigi un tempo in cui la scuola delle Belle Arti é solo aperta solo agli uomini allora prende lezioni negli studi d’artista che accettano le donne. Incontra e diventa l’amante dello scultore più famoso del momento: Auguste Rodin. Sarà una relazione passionale e artistica, lavorano insieme, scolpiscono insieme (il museo Rodin e il museo d’Orsay hanno belle opere di questo periodo) Poi lui la lascia, lui che da anni vive con un’altra donna, lui, l’artista amato e rispettato da tutti…lei viene denigrata, abbandonata e accantonata anche “artisticamente”. Vive da sola, non si fida più di nessuno e le sue opere non si vendono. A questo ci aggiungiamo che ha come fratello il famoso poeta , scrittore, diplomatico e accademico: Paul Claudel. La famiglia decide di farla internare, questa donna troppo “moderna” per l’epoca é l’onta della casa. Abbiamo delle lettere che lei scrive ad amici e parenti chiedendo aiuto, per 30 anni cercherà di spiegare al personale dell’ospedale l’ingiustizia che sta vivendo. Sono testimonianze strazianti, che lasciano trasparire la lucidità della donna internata. Muore praticamente di fame il 19 ottobre 1943 in un ospedale pubblico francese e nessun membro della sua famiglia assisterà al suo funerale. Il resto del mondo si preoccupa della guerra ….i suoi resti saranno messi in una fossa comune. Oggi Camille Claudel é stata completamente riabilitata, le sue opere sono esposte accanto a quelle di Rodin e a pochi chilometri da Parigi un museo le é completamente dedicato." Today's art film is 'Camille Claudel' by Bruno Nuytten (1988).

The film tells the story of the sculpture artist Camille Claudel’s life and her complicated relationship with Rodin. She was a talented and creative sculptor in a time where women was still looked down.

In this film we see the story of Camille Claudel we also visit the literature through the dialogues of her brother Paul. Another beauty in the film is that we also witness the era, the fame and death of Victor Hugo. This reminds us that the art in different forms are also same in the soul.

In short the film has different layers to read starting withe Camille Claudel’s life, going through women’s situation and the art idea in itself.

I also recommend the film ‘Camille Claudel, 1915′ by Bruno Dumont (2014) which tells the story of Camille Claudel of her times in asylum. These two film are complementary to understand Camille Claudel.

Collaborator, mistress and muse of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and sisterPaul Claudel's career as a sculptor (also model and painter) ended abruptly: she was interned at the age of 48 and died 30 years later.
