Meet The Murphys

This week we have the honor to introduce you to one of our beautiful July brides. Meet Lexi & her husband Mark! The Murphys were married July 21, 2018 at The Canisus College Chapel with a reception to follow at Hotel Henry. Lexi wore one of our all time favorite gowns, Tera by Pronovias. The flowers came fresh from her grandmother’s garden, and were arranged by Fern Croft.  Take a look at their beautiful wedding photos from Emma Clark Photography and get to know this sweet couple. 

First Date: “Mark’s apartment, where he made me the best pasta dinner and we listened to all of our favorite music while drinking too much red wine. It felt like a dream and all of our dates since still do.” 

On how he proposed: “We had recently gone on a trip to Spain and Paris, and one Friday night had plans to go to dinner at one of our favorite Italian restaurants, Osteria 166, to brainstorm ideas for a vacation in Italy.  He proposed privately at home with our cat, Pierre, and after we stopped crying we made it to dinner and planned our dream honeymoon instead!”

On her dress: “This might sound weird, but it made me feel like myself! I didn’t want to feel like I was playing dress up or trying to be someone else . . . I knew I wanted to be comfortable and be able to eat, drink, and dance like crazy all day long”. 

“When I tried it on with a traditional over the face blusher veil, I started bawling because I saw myself marrying the love of my life in it.  Fatima cut out several layers from under the dress skirt to make it less princess-y and way more comfortable, and it was perfect! During my fittings with Kendra, which were way too much fun, we paired it with crazy high blue rhinestone Bagdley Mischka heels Mark’s mom bought me on a random shopping trip. On the day of, I kept it simple and only accessorized with a single garden rose in my hair and baroque pearl earrings Mark picked out for me. The entire experience at Silk was perfect from start to finish.”

On their favorite part of the wedding: “Seeing everyone dancing and partying together as one big family was so cool and special. When the band stopped playing, everyone started chanting “one more song!” so they kept playing, which led to every single person at the wedding forming the biggest conga line I’ve ever seen around the entire ballroom. The whole thing with the band was a metaphor for how we tried to approach wedding planning– go for exactly what you want, don’t worry what people will think, surround yourself with good people who get you, trust them to do their thing, and live in the moment!”

On what their looking forward to next: “For my wedding gift, Mark got us a puppy– a rescue mutt from Jamaica named Diego!  Planning a big Irish-Catholic/Dominican wedding was a lot of work and a little crazy at times, and I’m really looking forward to settling into our new normal life with our fur babies, being husband and wife, and seeing what life has in store for us next!” 

I want to take a moment and thank Lexi (& Mark) for allowing us to feature them this week! It’s always a little sad for us when we have to say goodbye to our brides when they pick up their wedding gowns after months of spending time together during the alterations process, but when we get photos back liek these, we know that they had the best day ever, and Lexi is no exception! Congratulations to The Murphys, and here’s to a lifetime filled with love, happiness & travel!

Young local pro updates

Buffalo Baseball has a lot to talk about, and because the local sporting news around here really doesn’t care enough about our young, local talent that’s out there doing big things in the world of Professional Baseball, i figured why not fill everyone in on whats going on with some of the biggest prospects to come out of the Buffalo area in recent memory.

Leugim “LG” Castillo, an outfielder in the Brewers Organization was drafted in the 17th round of the 2017 MLB draft by the Brew-Crew. Young, Big, Strong and an overall freak athlete, LG was a dominant athlete all through high school and went right into the ranks of major league baseball right after graduating. LG had his struggles during rookie camp and rookie ball in Arizona for the Brewers, but earlier this spring he was assigned to Milwaukee's advanced rookie ball affiliate the Helena Brewers where he immediately caught fire. After hitting .178 in his rookie campaign, Castillo came back to Buffalo for the off season where the Lancaster grad worked all winter with different coaches, former teammates, and good friends to better his abilities and it paid off. As of this writing, Castillo has broken out of a mid season slump and taken off like a madman at the plate once again. He’s currently hitting .316 going 31/98, with a double, 4 triples, 4 homers, 21 RBI, and a .510 slugging percentage. 

If you haven’t been keeping an eye on this young man, you better start because he’s about to light a fire up in Helena that will only extinguish when he moves up to the higher ranks of the Brewers system....oh...and did i mention he JUST turned 19? Imagine what this young man will do when he starts putting on that “Grown Man Muscle” that tends to come when boys start hitting their 20′s.

Elsewhere in the baseball world, former 4th round pick Jonah Heim has had to travel quite a bit to get to where he is today. Originally drafted by Baltimore, Heim has been on both the O’s and the Ray’s farm clubs before finding a home this season within the Oakland A’s organization where he is currently assigned to the Midland RockHounds, The A’s AA affiliate team in Midland Texas. Heim is currently hitting .167 with Midland, going 3/18 since being pulled up on July 10th from the Stockton Ports where he was hitting .292 with 7 HR’s and 21 doubles with 49 RBI’s. 

In his 6th season as a pro, the 23 year old has a large up-side, and is a great defensive catcher. An article about Heim when he was with the O’s claimed that the Amherst Native had everything he needed to be a big league backstop in the show, but at a young age (Drafted at the age of 17) needed to grow into his body a bit more and learn to swing it at the next level. If you follow his stats, Heim is hitting .244 on his career and everywhere he seems to go, he grows more and more as a hitter and his defensive prowess was raved about even at a young age. 

Other notable Buffalo Boys that are bouncing around the show include Dan Dallas, the Canisus Pitcher drafted in the 7th round by the Padre’s who is currently pitching for the Tri-City Dust Devils and thrown in 10 games out of the bull pen, covering 17.2 innings, has a .510 ERA, giving up 7 hits, 1 run, and has 28 K’s in that time. 

if you were to look around the baseball world, you’d find a plethora of boys from the WNY area that have their cleats in the dirt of either Minor League Baseball, or the Independent scene. Not to mention the big moves being made by local colleges and JUCOs, the big time baseball being played at the high school level all around section 6, and the amateur/youth baseball in the area that’s only getting better by the year from ages 8 all the way up to the senior leagues boasting a few 60+ year olds who are still out there chasing the dream. 

Western New York: once seen as a place where 3 sport athletes and snow men dreamed of playing a high level of baseball, now becoming a hot bed for high end baseball talent in the US...Don’t sleep on WNY ball players anymore, we’ve got something to show you.

Buffalo Area Colleges and Universities

There are a total of 15 colleges and universities in the Buffalo-Niagara area. Education became very important when New York State’s first public school opened in Buffalo in 1839. Following that, Oliver Steele became the first school superintendent.

Buffalo is home to 3 SUNY (State University of New York) or public institutions. These include the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB), Buffalo State College, and Erie Community College (ECC). The combined total enrollment of the three is approximately 54,000 students. Founded in 1846, the only university located in the city of Buffalo is SUNY Buffalo and it is the largest SUNY institution averaging 29,944 students. Erie Community College was founded in 1946 and averages 15,084 students and Buffalo State College was founded in 1871 averaging 9,475 students.

In addition to the public colleges/universities, there are also at least 6 private colleges. Founded in 1854, Bryant and Stratton College averages 693 students. Trocaire College averages 1,567 and was founded in 1958. D’Youville College welcomes 1,963 students and was established in 1908. Next up is Daemen College founded in 1947 and averages 2,045 students. After that comes Medaille College with 2,759 students and started up in 1937. Finally, Canisus College houses 2,868 students and began in 1870.
