Latvian Air Base becomes NATO's third Air Police base in the Baltic Sea region
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/05/2024 - 09:00 in Military
As of March 1, 2024, the Latvian Military Base in Lielvarde was activated as the third NATO base to host Allied fighter detachments that will protect the skies of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, conducting the Baltic Air Police mission.

At a ceremony held on March 2, 2024, representatives of Latvia, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, the United States and NATO officially inaugurated the role of the base in NATO's regional Air Police stance. Due to the runway and infrastructure works at Ämari Air Base that will last until the end of the year, Latvia - in close cooperation with Estonia and Germany - has created the structural conditions in Lielvarde for rapid reaction alert tasks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, under the aegis of NATO. Until November, a German Eurofighters detachment will carry out this mission.

An inspection team from NATO's Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) in Uedem, Germany, responsible for supervising the Alliance's Air Policing throughout northern Europe, has officially certified that the command and control process is in place in Lielvarde - from the first alert to the launch of the fighters and the presentation of the final mission report.
Tumblr media
"This is a memorable day for Latvia and NATO. For the first time, NATO Air Policing will be carried out from the Lielvarde Air Base," said Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spr? ds. "We are grateful to all the Allies who contributed their forces to this mission of shielding the airspace of NATO and our people. Air domain is essential for the deterrence and defense of the Allies. The ability to carry out the mission from various locations clearly shows that NATO's integrated air and anti-missile defense can be agile, fast and credible in the defense of our airspace,” he added.

"For almost 20 years - since Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined NATO in 2004 - the principle of collective defense has been implemented in the Baltic States, and this mission has now physically reached Lielvarde, which means that NATO has three operational bases for detachments. - one in each Baltic ally," said Major General Harold van Pee, commander of the CAOC Uedem. “Both Latvia and Germany did an excellent job in quickly preparing the air base for combat aircraft jobs, as was demonstrated yesterday, when the German detachment managed to make its first alert a few hours after formally assuming the status for the first time,” he added referring to the first German takeoff from Lielvarde to intercept Russian military aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea.
Tumblr media

The ceremony was another opportunity to highlight the collective effort of the Allies in the region. “In the current ever-evolving security environment, NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission plays a crucial role in deterring potential threats, safeguarding the integrity of airspace and promoting regional stability,” said Colonel Viesturs Masulis, Commander of the Latvian Air Force. "It serves as a visible demonstration of our collective determination to defend ourselves against any threat; therefore, we have the honor of receiving and hosting the German Luftwaffe while it operates its Eurofighters from Lielvarde Air Base, ensuring safe skies. I would like to thank the Polish Air Force for its support of the Ämari Air Base mission in Estonia. Thank you for helping to protect our airspace during the last few months,” he added.
With the activation of Lielvarde Air Base, Latvia allows NATO to continue to use two air bases for Air Police in the region. In the meantime, Ämari Air Base will be used for the deployment of Germany's Detachable Control and Reporting Center, which, from mid-March to the end of June 2024, will increase NATO's surveillance and control capacity in the Baltic Sea region. During this period, German air traffic controllers will be integrated into the control and communication centers in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Hi! I wanted to ask if you knew if there has been any outreach by Catalan independentist figures to the Occitan/Aranese community in Val d'Aran?
Yes, all the time! Aranese people are also involved in the Catalan independence movement (for example, Mireia Boya is Aranese).
Catalan independentists are in touch with the Val d'Aran of course, and Aranese people are also in the movement, and from time Catalan independentism or cultural/language rights movement does things with Occitanists too (for cultural collaboration, check the CAOC: Cercle d'Agermanament Occitano-Català).
When it comes to the Val d'Aran, it has a higher degree of self-government from the Generalitat de Catalunya (regional Catalonia government) than other areas of Catalonia (as much as can be allowed under Spanish law) and the Catalan laws say that the Aranese people have the right to self-determination. However, Spain considers those laws anti-constitutional (of course), so they are suspended at the moment. But when Catalonia is an independent country, those laws will be valid and the Val d'Aran can choose at any moment to hold a referendum on whether they want to be part of Catalonia or not.
Lots of people also defend that the official name of Catalonia as an independent country should be "Republic of Catalonia and Aran", to make sure we recognise Val d'Aran's uniqueness.
When it comes to language rights, the organizations that work for the promotion of the Catalan language also work for the promotion of Aranese Occitan (for example, the public institutions of Catalonia's government, the NGO Plataforma per la Llengua, etc).
Aranese Occitan is a co-official language in all of Catalonia, at the same legal level as Catalan. You have the legal right to address a public institution in Aranese in any place of Catalonia, they must give you the documentation in Aranese but you won't find a worker who speaks Aranese in most places outside of Aran.

US Air Force F-15E Fighter Jets Police NATO Skies in the High North
On June 7, a team of specialists from NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) at Uedem, Germany, declared four U.S. Air Force F-15E fighter jets from RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom mission-ready. They are conducting the Allied Air Policing mission over Iceland in close cooperation with the Icelandic Coast Guard flying out of NATO Keflavik Air Base. After arriving in Iceland in the beginning of June, the U.S. F-15E pilots conducted familiarisation flights above Iceland and began harmonising command and control relationships with the CAOC and the local NATO Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) Keflavik, “Loki”. This work laid the foundation for the certification of the U.S. detachment confirming the chain of command and the alerting procedures are in place to ensure NATO - via the CAOC and the CRC - can launch the F-15Es for Quick Reaction Alert -Intercept missions if needed. An inspection team conducted all foreseen alerting drills and procedures with the detachment and eventually declared mission-readiness for the NATO air mission in Iceland – called Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to Meet Iceland’s Peacetime Preparedness Needs (ASIC-IPPN). #military #defense #defence #militaryleak #nato #usairforce

Typhoons of the air forces of Germany and Spain jointly execute NATO eAP mission
The mission included nine Eurofighters, operated by 60 military personnel from the Spanish Air Force and 140 from the German Air Force.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/16/2022 - 15:00in Military
Eurofighter Typhoon detachments of the German and Spanish Air Forces jointly carried out NATO's Advanced Air Policing (eAP) mission for the first time.
Conducted as part of a 'plug-and-fight' concept, the mission involved the integration of the 140 military personnel of the German detachment along with about 60 military personnel of the Spanish Air Force, at the Ämari Air Base in Estonia.
Together, the German-Spanish forces operated a total of nine Eurofighter aircraft.
During the eAP operation, the NATO Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC) in Uedem, Germany, ordered the launch of the fighters.
Tumblr media

The Eurofighters, each of the German and Spanish Air Forces, then carried out a combined surtida to identify and escort a non-NATO aircraft above the Baltic region.
The commander of the Spanish Detachment, Miguel Ángel López García, said: "With these combined alert missions, we have achieved great success as a result of teamwork and thanks to the interoperability of our advanced weapons system.
Tumblr media
"Shared maintenance reduced the logistics footprint, employing less personnel and material for each country for this type of operation, halving the costs of Eurofighters if the two countries worked separately."
This mission also marked the first time that the German Air Force, a Eurofighter user nation, provided smaller spare parts, as well as guided missiles, weapons and ammunition for weapons on board the Spanish aircraft.
Tumblr media
In addition, German tankers also provided fuel to Spanish force aircraft.
A detailed case-by-case analysis was carried out at times when replacement, support or instant exchange was not possible, as both nations use different versions of the Eurofighter.
The three weeks of this combined flight mission allowed the forces to increase cooperation and interoperability.

Baltic States at the epicenter of military exercises
Tumblr media
The Baltic States have become the scene of NATO military actions especially aimed at provoking Russia and Belarus.
At the end of September, this year’s largest military exercise “Sword 2020” will take place in Latvia.
Approximately 1000 Vidzeme Brigade bodyguards and soldiers, representatives from the Lithuanian Armed Forces Volunteer Defense Forces and the NATO Extended Presence Battle Group will take part in the training. They will carry out the tasks over a wide area, covering seven counties. The urban environment, forests and meadows will become a battlefield. Outside the landfills, ammunition and combat simulations will be used. Collective training will train operations in hybrid threats, as well as improve command management capabilities.
In addition, several other NATO military exercises will take place in the Baltic States during this period.
Operation Steadfast Pyramid 20 – begun in Latvia will continue through September 11, NATO explaining:
“An Exercise Study focused on further developing the abilities of commanders and senior staff to plan and conduct operations through the application of operational art in decision making based on the ACO Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive (COPD) and utilizing a complex, contemporary scenario.”
Operation Steadfast Pinnacle 20 is scheduled for Latvia from September 13-18, explaining:
“An Exercise Study focused on further developing the abilities of commanders and senior staff to plan and conduct operations through the application of operational art in decision making based on the ACO (Allied Command Operations) Comprehensive Operations Planning Directive (COPD) and utilizing a complex, contemporary scenario.”
Operation Ramstein Guard 10 20 is scheduled for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania from September 20-24.
“The NATO Electronic Warfare Force Integration Program is a means to exercise the NATO designated regional elements of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System conducted through the CAOCs (Combined Air Operation Center) while also including some national systems and assets. It is designed to train Air Command Ramstein and subordinate units on the reporting/coordination requirements while exposing them to a wide variety of EW (electronic warfare) tactics and techniques in a controlled environment,” NATO officials said.
From September 1 to 10, joint war games by an infantry brigade of the Baltic Armed Forces and the 41st Field Artillery Brigade of the U.S. Army will take place in Estonia. This is the first live firing exercise by U.S. artillery outside their permanent bases in Europe.
In a statement the Russian embassy in Washington said it considers the use of multiple launch rocket systems by U.S. armed forces during the exercises in Estonia to be provocative and extremely dangerous for regional stability,
“Russia has repeatedly proposed to the United States and its allies to limit training activities and to divert the exercise zones from the Russia-NATO contact line,” the text reads. “Why do this demonstrative saber-rattling? What signal do the NATO members want to send us? Who is actually escalating tensions in Europe? And this is all happening in the context of an aggravated political situation in that region of Europe [in Belarus].”
“A rhetorical question is – how would the Americans react in the event of such shooting by our military at the U.S. border?” the embassy added.
The objective, according to the organizers of the exercises, is to test NATO’s defense capabilities against possible attacks on European soil. However, despite the official narrative, the provocative nature of the tests is truly clear.
It is obvious that military tensions have erupted in the Baltic States. Recently NATO planes that would be used in the exercises were intercepted unexpectedly by Russian fighters while flying over the border area.
It is known that Aleksandr Lukashenko accused the U.S.-led West of attempting to destabilize the country, including by deploying NATO forces close to its borders. In addition, Lukashenko put his troops on high alert and started his own military exercises, understanding NATO’s maneuvers as a provocative and threatening measure, not only against Russia, but also Belarus.
Any military provocations along Poland-Lithuania-Belarus borders with could lead to an uncontrollable escalation from all sides.
Exercises like the above go on at all times near the borders of nations on the U.S. target list for regime change.
From now through year end 2020 U.S.-led NATO military exercises will be held in Turkey, France, the UK, Kosovo, the Mediterranean Sea, Spain, Lithuania, Estonia, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Bosnia Herzegovina, Serbia, Poland and Norway.
It’s obvious that instead of prioritizing cooperative relations with the world community, NATO (U.S.) is preparing for a serious military conflict.
