Saw Damianos of Akielos all up in Laurent of Vere's business.
Likely place for him to be.

I love how Auguste haunts the narrative in a pretty traditional sense (and it is devastating) but Kastor also does this. The kind brother Damen knew doesn't exist anymore, we witness his death right at the beginning of the book and then Damen drags his corpse to the end of the book. Kastor is as much of a haunting ghost for Damen as Auguste is for Laurent. Damen still hoping that his brother is in there and it's not just his body with a stranger inside it. Two older brothers dearly loved, both dead from the start.

we don’t talk enough about the insanity and significance of damen’s slave collar literally saving his life at Hellay
About how laurent promises him at the start of that battle that he’ll remove it if they win.
How it’s that very collar that spares damen’s neck from Touars’ blade (at a point in which damen is usurping a fight Touars means to take up with Laurent) and eventually wins them that battle
being made to be a slave saves damen’s life here, in a much more overt and obvious way than it does when Jokaste conspires to have him sent to Vere, but it evokes that same theme.
Yet it’s so different at this point in the story - just before damen is recognized for who he is by Touars, and then by jord; just before his first night with Laurent. if that collar had come off a day earlier, damen might have died, and Laurent’s chances of success in the war against the regent for his throne/the war within himself over his feelings for damen would have died right along with him.
there’s so fucking much I could say about all this. fuck.

‘And how is it you now fight for Veretians?’ said Alexon.
Charls found himself curious to hear his answer, but Lamen only said, ‘I came to know one of them.’

In the moment
Sleep broke as suddenly and sharply as fine glass: there was a blade at Damen’s throat, its cold point pressed into his thundering pulse.
“I longed for this,” Laurent whispered.
Damen watched his lips form the words, from under the warmth of Laurent’s body, and felt the truth of it.
Again inspired by the prompt from @skeptiquex sharing Hanif Abdurraquib’s wonderful poem ‘it is once again the summer of our discontent’ ❤️ thank you for the prompt darling!
