Little Boy Blue
Summary:
“Son, you look like you’re going through some hard times. And every once in a while you gotta accept a little help.”

It was almost time. He could feel it.
He walks to the end of the room and pulls back the ugly brown drape.
Yes, it would be soon.
He knows it, can almost physically sense it, the same way he can feel the cold that is creeping through the edges of the window pane. Frost clings thick to the glass like tiny snow drifts in the corners. Absently he uses his fingernail to carve a heart into the icy landscape.
He remembers once doing the same thing to the soft skin of her back. She’d giggled as he’d traced ‘I Love You’ with a feather-like touch.
His eyes darken when he remembers finding the trace of red the laser had missed.
And just like that he recalls the city he’s lost the most in. His nails dig in, scratching out the ice-etched heart.
He should have known better than to seek refuge in that wretched city of all places.
He left in May and now in December, when most people are celebrating the holidays with family and friends, he’s just getting through each day.
He’s traveled across the country hundreds of times; usually she was by his side. She wasn’t always happy about it, but she was there.
But he’s tired of moving, of running. Tired of being without contact.
When he left, he’d thought maybe he could teach. Access to whatever false ID and credentials he would need was easily remedied. He’d moved every 3 days from May to July. By then his funds had dwindled and needed to be replenished somehow.
* * * * *
A small town with a community college in Arizona needed a Mythology instructor; Professor Kent Searcher accepted. He gathered the text books he needed, read them cover to cover and had his class syllabus prepared in three days. He found it ironic that he was looking forward to using some of the knowledge he’d worked a lifetime to achieve in this capacity.
Surprisingly, he was content teaching the students–some of them so willing to believe–who didn’t need solid scientific evidence.
The students sensed it the moment their professor’s mood changed, his animated speech breaking off in mid-sentence.
He cleared his throat and bowed his head, asking them to please study quietly until the end of class. He removed his glasses and sat, thumbs digging into the corners of his eyes.
The motion hadn’t been casual enough that they’d missed his reddened eyes and several wayward tears.
He got word the last week in September. They were coming.
He’d left with 8 bags in May. By October, when Mark Hunter took a job coaching High School Basketball, there were only 4. Two of those remained in the trunk of the car.
Six weeks later he accepted a dinner invitation from the 8th grade English teacher. He was lonely and longed for some one on one adult conversation.
She was attractive, though her beauty paled in comparison to the one he still loved. The one he still dreamed about every night he closed his eyes.
He arrived at 7. She smiled and ushered him into the living room. He made himself comfortable on the couch while she excused herself for a moment. He was shocked when she returned and placed a baby into his arms, “Could you hold him while I check the oven?” He nodded dumbly.
How could he forget she’d told him about her 6 month old son?
She returned to find him openly weeping, even as her son slept on, oblivious. He stood, handed her the baby and left.
* * * * *
Finally a bright spot on the horizon. He was needed.
At home. He was going home.
Danger.
A mad dash.
He was chased between boxcars and engines.
A missed chance.
A petite figure stood on the platform, watching the train with him depart.
He ran to his car, eyes burning, tears clouding his vision. He was somewhere in Ohio when exhaustion overcame him and he drove the car into a ditch.
* * * * *
He was found unconscious and taken to the local clinic.
The mechanic who towed the car offered him a job in exchange for the repairs necessary to get his vehicle back on the road. Mr. Guthrie didn’t even mind that he didn’t have any automotive experience short of putting the key in the ignition. He just said, “Son, you look like you’re going through some hard times. And every once in a while you gotta accept a little help.”
He became a wiz at tire rotation, fixing flats and oil changes. He heard the explosion as he was walking to the garage one day. Guthrie’s Repair Shop was a ball of flames; black smoke clouds floated up from the building. He ran back to the bed and breakfast, threw as much as he could into one bag and left town in the truck Mr. Guthrie had loaned him.
He’d abandoned the truck 2 hours later.
He didn’t know if the man who’d taken a complete stranger under his wing was alive or dead as he boarded a bus headed east.
Just one more thing to weigh heavily on his mind.
As the bus ate the highway miles, he fell into a fitful sleep, realizing; each time They found him was sooner than the last.
* * * * *
Donovan Seeker left the grocery store where he worked as a stock boy… man, went to his dingy efficiency apartment and changed into his jogging gear.
Even the snow of mid-December didn’t slow his pace. His normal route took him within 5 blocks of the Liberty Bell, but this night he travelled a new path.
He ran until he spotted the shop. He turned 180 degrees, saw the bar across the street and made his way in.
Dirty, dark and smoky.
A place for adulterers, drug dealers, prostitutes… and whores. Low-life, scum.
The kind of place she shouldn’t have been in… but had.
Anger lashed through him. He turned, slammed the door open.
Run, run, run. Legs pumping. Heart pounding.
What should have been ancient history wasn’t. It just wasn’t.
He made it back to the apartment, unlocked and opened the door with a forceful bang against the wall. He stripped quickly, climbed into the shower.
Hot, hot water. Scrub, scrub. Harder. Faster. He tried to get rid of the images, the anger.
Finally he shut the water off. Dried off, calmer than before. A car door slammed, he made his way to the window.
They were coming.
He grabbed his jacket, his wallet. Reached into the pocket quickly and felt the softness of his one memento. He heard them coming down the hall. Out of time, he opened the window and crawled out onto the fire escape. The old window slammed, catching his jacket sleeve.
They kicked the door in, searched the room. A leather jacket was hanging from the window. They looked down and saw him disappearing around the corner.
They smiled, knowing they would succeed soon.
* * * * *
He’s left his frosty window.
Reclining on the bed he lets his insecurities and anger reign.
Why is he the one running? Why aren’t they together?
Instead he’s the one alone. He’s the one unemployed and surprised at being depressed over getting laid off from a janitor’s job.
At least she still has….
While he has nothing, nothing at all.
Maybe she’s moved on, has another man, another lover. Someone to help raise their son.
Their son. HIS son. A son he should be able to see dressed in a little Santa outfit tonight, Christmas Eve. And then after he’s asleep, the naughty elf could come out and play. He could urge mommy to get naked and on her hands and knees in front of the Christmas tree, while they play 'drive the sleigh’.
Maybe it’s Doggett. He’d sure managed to fill in nicely in the work place. Maybe he’s warming the sheets too.
He knows it isn’t him, and hasn’t been since before William. So few times really; when was William conceived? He hopes it was after they’d shared a beer and movie date together. A happy, comfortable moment in their lives. He hates thinking she was already pregnant and feeding liquor to the tiny person growing inside of her.
He remembers the day he left with such clarity.
* * * * *
William was unusually alert and fussy for a newborn. Could he sense he might never see his father again? Scully started crying and he’d taken the baby into the bedroom, stretching out on the bed with him. Still shirtless after his shower, he held his son against his skin. His large hands held his precious package with tenderness and awe.
He began to sing, softly, his voice full of emotion.
Scully came into the room just in time to hear him choke out, 'he learned to walk while I was away’. She stifled a sob and left them alone.
William quieted, listening intently to his father’s voice singing a heartfelt rendition of 'Cat’s in the Cradle’, he’d finally dropped off to sleep.
After placing William safe and sound in his cradle. Mulder finished dressing and went into the living room. Scully sat on the couch, quiet, subdued. They avoided looking at each other. He picked up his bags and was almost out the door before Scully was in his arms. She wanted to make love, she didn’t care that she’d just given birth. Kissing her lips and brushing her tears away with his thumbs, he gently declined.
Two hours later, on the road to nowhere, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the only thing he had of William’s. He brought it to his nose and inhaled the sweet baby smell, felt the soft yarn tickling his skin. Swearing to himself to never, never lose it.
* * * * *
But he did.
In fucking Philadelphia.
He lost the only physical connection he had to his son. Such an insignificant thing really, just the warming cap he’d worn during his short hospital stay, but it’d meant everything to him to have something that had actually touched his son.
There hadn’t been time for pictures.
He goes to the window again, sees his reflection and the tears streaming down his face. He has nothing to remember his son by, while she has it all.
He wonders how long it takes for love to turn to hate. He wonders how much longer it will be for him….
And if he’ll run the next time They come for him.

Girls Auto Clinic Owner: 'I Couldn't Find A Female Mechanic, So I Had To Learn'
Patrice Banks is now a mechanic, and the owner of a successful auto clinic, but there was a time when she avoided taking her own car in for routine maintenance.
"I was afraid I was going to be taken advantage of," she says. "I was tired of feeling helpless and having to go talk to a guy."
Banks, who was working as an engineer at DuPont at the time, thought she'd feel more comfortable with a female technician. There was only one problem: "I couldn't find a female mechanic," she says, "so I had to learn it [myself]."
She enrolled in night classes at a technical school. "I was the only girl with a bunch of boys, 19-year-old boys," she says. "That was interesting. I was 31."
Eventually, Banks left her six-figure salary as an engineer. She worked in a couple Philadelphia garages for free while she completed her training, and in 2016 she opened the Girls Auto Clinic repair center in Upper Darby, Pa., which is staffed by female mechanics. To make the shop more appealing and convenient for women, she also opened an adjoining manicure-pedicure and blowout salon.
Banks recounts her experiences and provides tips for car maintenance in her book Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide.

Shared love of trains brings Johnson and Biden together
Boris Johnson paid tribute to Joe Biden’s well-attested love of the railways by choosing a sleek silver Amtrak train to travel between New York and Washington for his first White House visit as prime minister.
The mode of travel was not only a hat-tip to Mr Biden’s decades of rail commuting as senator and vice-president between his Delaware home and the capital, but also a physical reminder of the main purpose of Johnson’s US trip – to drum up support for carbon emission reductions and polluting car use.
He was rewarded for his gesture with a rambling anecdote from the president as the two of them sat down together in the Oval Office.
In comments which bore the hallmark of having been rehearsed many, many times over the years, the president told Mr Johnson how an Amtrak conductor had approached him to say that he and his colleagues had calculated that over the years, he’d covered more than 2 million miles on the route.
As panicky reporters shuddered at the thought that their precious few minutes with the two leaders were about to be swallowed up in their entirety by the older man’s reminiscences, the PM stepped in to steer the conversation back onto matters of policy, telling the president how much he shared his “belief in transport infrastructure”.
The three-hour, 225-mile journey from New York to Washington, snaking through the stunning countryside of coastal Maryland with stops in Philadelphia and Baltimore, was a rare break from the conference room and debating chamber for the prime minister in a three-day trip which has been totally dominated by climate change.
Unlike on previous trips, the deadly serious purpose of his visit prevented Mr Johnson from indulging in the usual photo-opportunities which have seen him don hard hats, try his hand at various sports or dance with local beauties in the hope of a bit of positive publicity.

Instead, his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly has involved an endless sequence of 30-minute bilateral meetings with countries ranging from Ukraine to Colombia, along with a roundtable discussion with countries threatened by the impact of rising temperatures and topped off by a keynote speech on Wednesday in which he will plead with fellow leaders to come up with the emission-cutting pledges he needs to make his COP26 summit in Glasgow a success.
There was palpable relief in the UK contingent when Biden doubled his $5.6bn climate finance and the Chinese promised not to build any more polluting coal-fired power stations abroad (though notably not halting the construction of a plant a week at home). Normally poker-faced COP26 president Alok Sharma could barely suppress a smirk as the news of the American offer seeped out.
Johnson himself has been in ebullient mood, visibly relieved to be freed of the bounds of Covid restrictions and allowed back into the hurly-burly of in-person political life on which he thrives.
Though both he and the president wore black face-masks for their 90-minute chat in the Oval Office, Johnson’s first major international trip since the Biarritz summit of 2019 was characterised by a level of mingling and face-to-face interaction which feels unusual after the era of the Zoom conference.
The fact that in his public comments, Biden effectively sounded the death-knell for Johnson’s long-cherished dream of a UK/US free trade deal, as well as admonishing the PM once more for allowing Brexit to put stability in Ireland at risk, did not appear to have soured the prime minister’s trip.
He presented the president with a signed copy of astronaut Tim Peake’s plea for the protection of the planet Hello, Is This Planet Earth, while Mr Biden gave him a framed photo of their earlier meeting in Cornwall in June and a White House-branded watch
As he departed the White House for dinner with Australian counterpart Scott Morrison, the mood in Johnson’s camp was that he was delighted to be back on the world stage and to have been given reason to hope that his next major appearance – as chair of the Cop gathering – will end in success.

This one-day training workshop, generously hosted by Bay Gardens Marina Haven and co-sponsored by Bank of Saint Lucia, will provide a forum to educate practitioners about the psychological consequences following a range of traumatic events (including assault, natural disaster, car accidents, among others), along with a review of evidence-based counseling treatments and resources available to providers in Saint Lucia to support recovery for survivors of trauma.
It is estimated that nearly 70% of populations across the globe will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetimes, and approximately 10-15% of individuals experiencing such distressing events will go on to develop significant mental health problems as a result, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, specific phobias, depression, substance use, etc. In addition, the occurrence of these mental health issues following exposure to a traumatic event is associated with significant healthcare burden and distress for those experiencing such events, including greater number of days missed from work, significantly higher overall healthcare costs, and a distinct reduction in quality of life and life functioning.
There is significant data to suggest that children and adolescents who experience a traumatic event are at particular risk for altered negative trajectories of development (including higher rates of HIV, substance use, suicide risk, school dropout, teenage pregnancy, and poverty) if they do not receive intervention early on for dealing with their traumatic experiences, and thus, this is an age group that could benefit from early intervention.
Dr. Asnaani is hopeful that this forum will facilitate a better understanding around the current infrastructure and efforts related to this work and highlight needs for ongoing training in mental health services, in order to reduce dysfunction from this highly prevalent and highly distressing psychosocial issue. Given Dr. Asnaani’s extensive training in this area at some of the best institutions in the U.S., she affirms: “I have a personal and vested interest in bringing this knowledge back to my home country of St. Lucia to contribute to the mental health resources locally, by partnering with local organizations already doing phenomenal advocacy and public health work (such as
HERStoire).” Currently, of high priority to Dr. Asnaani is the reinvestment of her training into bettering the mental health services and treatment options in Saint Lucia.
Also presenting is another daughter of the soil, Dr. Tammi-Marie Phillip, an attending child and adolescent psychiatrist at Butler Hospital and affiliated with the Brown Alpert Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island. Both speakers are very proud to be from Saint Lucia and are hopeful that this workshop is only the first of many training opportunities to which they can contribute moving forward.
The theme of the workshop is “Broadening Our Understanding of Trauma: Psychological Consequences, Effective Treatments, and How to Engage in Provider Self-Care.” There will also be a brainstorming session to engage counselors, mental health center administrators, advocates, and governmental bodies around practical ways to establish comprehensive care for those struggling with post-trauma mental health symptoms. Training in ways to practice self-care, and brief interventions will be provided for all stakeholders engaged in the provision of mental healthcare in the country.

Brief biography of Dr. Anu Asnaani
Anu Asnaani, Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist who most recently served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, USA from 2013-2018 and Associate Director of the Center for Treatment and Study of Anxiety from 2017-2018, which is a world-renowned research powerhouse for PTSD and anxiety disorders. She completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University from 2007-2013, and her research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms to improve treatments for fear-based disorders
such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder in community settings. This summer, Dr. Asnaani will be starting her own lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Utah which focuses on these topics specifically in diverse community settings.
Dr. Asnaani is particularly interested in expanding our understanding about how basic emotion processes (such as how we regulate strong emotions in the face of stressful life events) can be targeted to reduce negative impacts on mental health, and how we can do this for a greater diversity of individuals from a range of backgrounds and countries. To date, Dr. Asnaani has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on this area. Clinically, Dr. Asnaani has directly treated over 150 patients using cognitive behavioral therapy over the past decade, and has been the primary supervisor for over 25 therapists whom she has trained to treat a variety of mental health issues including anxiety/mood disorders, PTSD, substance use disorders, suicidality, and personality disorders. Dr. Asnaani has also been invited to deliver over 15 workshops and trainings for hundreds of mental health professionals such as lay counselors, social workers, and first responders, typically in the areas of recognizing and treating mental health dysfunction for providers in high schools/colleges, prison systems, community mental health programs, primary care settings, and graduate programs in clinical psychology both in the U.S. and elsewhere (e.g., Sweden, Japan).

Tammi-Marie Phillip, M.D., is an attending child and adolescent psychiatrist at Butler Hospital and affiliated with the Brown Alpert Medical School in Providence, Rhode Island. She received her medical degree and residency training in Child Psychiatry at Yale University, where she was extensively trained in pharmacological and psychosocial treatments for a number of mental health issues. She also has a particular interest in the effective provision of telemental health services to the Caribbean.

“As a recent graduate during this unusual times, I start my architectural career different than expected.
The worldwide lockdown made people more bound to their houses than ever before. In a post pandemic situation people might ask for a home that includes different qualities. My painting investigates an atmosphere in which the inhabitants can experience a peaceful surrounding. A healthy environment where inside and outside space merge. Natural elements such as the sky, water and the views are decomposed to form a balanced composition with the architecture and inhabitant. The surroundings play an active role in the experience of the space.
I got inspired by architects such as Luis Barragan and Mies van der Rohe. The use of color is limited to a few tones as a statement of reduction. Nevertheless the colors are more or less necessary to increase the sensation of the place.”

“The dearth of affordable in many contemporary city’s is an issue many urbanites are uncomfortably familiar with. The problem is ubiquitous, and solutions are similarly scarce. Possibly through implementing a novel development strategy, programmatic amalgamation and unorthodox site selection, a potential solution may emerge: a stacking of collectives. This drawing visually summarizes a theoretical typology that would combine communal living, collaborative design, and collective financing and allow for a number of distinct groups of individuals to occupy a single, co-owned mid-rise tower.
These groups (those present in this drawing ranging from frat-boys to a covenant of nuns) would be present from the beginning of the design process and would contribute both financially and aesthetically to their portion of the building. This would allow for flexible layouts depending on desired function and a greater sense of ownership over the resulting building. An urban mid-rise becomes a stacking of collectives.”

held during the trading of used cars which

bidding and most importantly the exchange

“The time an inmate spends at the facility is under their control, no matter the crime committed, but under one condition: they must reach the top of the structure.
In order to do so, there are 50 levels the inmate must unlock, each level containing an important skill that must be learned and mastered, a fun activity, or something needed for survival. At the bottom of the structure is a massive library that contains the knowledge needed to follow a path to the top.
The exploration of new ideas, a new mindset, a new perspective and the possibility of a new life is rooted in the imagination. This system keeps the mind and imagination of inmates engaged, as they are always working towards a goal. Inmates have to earn their release and in the process of doing so, are able to gain valuable life skills and rehabilitate themselves.”
“Mechanized habitable vertical farm for a COVID generation” by Ian Lai, University of Pennsylvania
“Everyone is working from home during the COVID pandemic. How is office space rethought to integrate with the housing typology and its integrated systems? Is sustainability inherently tied to conservative building schemes and forms?
This project addresses the growing need for buildings in Philadelphia to be repurposed and reused in spite of increasing unemployment and the crisis of housing shortage during the coronavirus. Despite the rising numbers of unemployment and people’s needs to spend money simply on rent, food and water.
The use of vertical space, access to views an sunlight should not only be reserved for the upper class but any low-income population as well. By taking and extruding a volume of 600sqft from the site FAR and twisting it to account for wind forces as well as sunlight in angles round the building and pixelating the facade to increase surface area for rainwater catchment, the resulting form is achieved.”

Conceived to introduce a peri-urban context to the viewer, this illustration aims to convey a sense of scale, lifestyle and spatial demographic of Bengal’s countryside within which numerous projects of Abin Design Studio are situated.
Dominated by a Temple complex and dotted with small lakes and open fields, the graphic highlights the insertion of the studio’s works in the region that introduced an entire community to the impact of design and the ability of architecture to expand beyond its footprint.
The illustration was meticulously created using various software such as Sketchup, AutoCAD, Illustrator and Photoshop.”

On the other hand, social media raises the voices of migrants, refugees, and urban nomads on their identity crisis in constant resettling.
Can we translate displacements into architectural imagination? In A CITY OF NOWHERE, an infrastructural framework stretches three-dimensionally with interconnected mobility systems representing the force of technology. In contrast, the properties built upon the framework are independent of their neighbors in typology, culture, and social identity. This city nourishes a society where people enjoy optimized freedom of traveling and exploring while losing the materialized sense of home or community.”

“Let’s face it: modes of production are being more efficient by the minute and we can’t stop it. We’ve developed 6-axis robotic arms that can 3-D print walls of a home. We’re surrounded by embedded smart sensors and intelligent systems that use our behavioral data to tell us what to conserve and when. Frankly, who isn’t speculating about the future of the infrastructure built by AI architects?
Through the use of Generative Adversarial Models (GAN), we have collected and trained over 500 images of architectural renderings and drawings. This drawing is a collage of images produced by the machine itself, and our personal stitching of an AI-built future entwined with nature.

“Pilgrimage of Everyday Life is capable of generating over 1300 litres of water per day, tremendously ameliorating the inefficiency of water collection, as well as creating ever-changing landscape formed by the glistening, translucent waxed linen. Also, the spiral structure amplifies the abundance of religious and natural power in this area, providing a place beneath it for people to worship the blue sky and celebrate the harvest of water. The plaza space can be highly flexible, used for meeting, food preparation, mediation and festive activities and so forth.
The stone floor radiates out from the well with a series of bamboo columns, reinforcing the notion of community, enhancing the transition from sacredness to openness and re-integrating the stunning surroundings. Thus, going to the community centre becomes a delightful and spiritual journey which one can experience personal and social transformation and celebrate the importance of local traditions, communal gatherings and Mother Earth.”

“In order to survive as a species, today, we have to stay at home. In the last few months, the limits of home became a battleground for our work selves, social selves, sexual selves, creative selves, and other ways we choose to manifest our humanity. The tumor-like forms encroach into the territory of the former clearly defined domesticities and transform the image of what was once a home into the image of a new programmatic anomaly – a place that does everything. After years of socially distanced existence, this home has illegitimately transformed itself into a monster, constantly changing to meet professional, sexual, aesthetic, creative, and other needs of its confined owner.”

“Based on sensitive speculation, this drawing proposes a temporary architecture to soften Hanoi city, amid a rapidly developing urban context. Hanoi’s 1000 year old tradition of kite flying provides a vehicle for the creation of temporary spaces that will facilitate Hanoi’s street culture, a culture that relies on permeability to provoke spontaneous interaction.
This drawing questions the path of Hanoi’s development towards a western city and proposes an alternative technology, in reference to Hanoi’s past, that provides the tools for the organic social reconstruction of the present and the future.
Pectin, Cellulose and Chitosan, extracted from kite production, combine to form bio-polymer building components that contribute to temporary spaces, designed to melt back into earth’s ecosystem after several years. Unlike architecture as we know it, each decay provides the opportunity for redesign thereby allowing a sustainable and affordable infrastructure to evolve across the city, in harmony with contemporary social requirements.”

“The Duckpit project is a critical interface for a collaborative reaction on a borderline of virtual and “real”, an architectural speculative device for re[dis]covering economical and social glitches in political propaganda. An old ruin in the alternative Sava-Mala district was scanned and so digitally preserved before it’s demolition for the Belgrade Waterfront development, a giant ambiguous housing and commerce implant to the heart of the city.
Through a fictional transformation of this ruin into a digital-underground art gallery, people are asked to use their voice (click) for a new kind of protest against the capitalist savage sign, Belgrade Waterfront. With the help of an elucidated website this project becomes a digital art installation itself, the subject of a parasite-sabotage from within a structure is introduced and growing with every voice to a governing manipulating virus, which transforms the construction site and so gives the city back to its habitants.”
“A Tribute to My Grandmother : Her Real Battles with Dementia” by Ker Xin Lee, Loughborough University
“This drawing is my architectural interpretation of my grandmother’s daily struggles with dementia. As a young girl growing up with her, I witnessed how her dementia progressed as she aged. The drawing illustrates her journey with dementia and encapsulates a glimpse of her confusing memories.
It depicts her vivid childhood memories of China as a young girl before she fled, her struggles to find her way home when she got lost in our neighborhood, her hallucinations and delusions, and finally, her last few weeks in the hospital due to failure in parts of her brain, inhibiting her feelings of hunger or thirst.
Dementia causes the brain to deteriorate and can be disorientating to the patient. I wish to raise awareness about Dementia and hope to someday be able to design purpose built architecture, which helps slow the deterioration process and improve the quality of life for those with dementia.”

“In a future communist society, humans must be taught how to interact with one another in a world that fosters equality and stability. To avoid conflict and live peacefully, the Unity Center is youth’s first exposure to volatile emotion and social interaction. The center aims to provide spaces where youth can experience different types of emotion within a safe environment to build an emotional tolerance to conflict and distress.
The movement through the building is a ride that conforms to the idea that the physical nature of the Unity Center no longer needs to be restricted by traditional design standards, allowing for molding of the architecture purely for user experience. The structure is a membrane that shapes according to the youth’s emotional capacity, becoming ’a womb;’ from which a new understanding of emotion emerges. The four main spaces exhibit the most commonly encountered emotions: frustration, fear, melancholy and joy.”

“The drawing is a top view of a new market designed in Callowhill district of Philadelphia. The market provides facilities of Hemp products. It is designed by building, carving and rebuilding reliefs from defamiliarized neighborhood artifacts. The market is serving the city with sustainable, environmentally friendly and ethical products. It carves its identity in the city as the density of ubiquitous elements while having unique courtyards of rare figures.
The market has five quadrants, each has a mat density of crisscross Cartesian elements which break their own limits and intersect with elements in adjacent quadrant. The main difference between each quadrant are the unique figural artifacts. Functionally, the market operates on four sections. The retail space, industrial section, harvesting area and public gardens. Each program operates on different level. The market has an industrial and synthetic programmatic interaction with the city. Moreover, it inhabits nature by providing urban farming platform.”

“As the world pauses at this moment in time amid a pandemic that, more than ever, has been exposing various aspects of deception, image-making and defactualization in existing structures and systems of powers, we confront ideas about our built environment; a manifestation of the habitat or the inhabitant? The structure or the institution?
Phantasmagoria is a meditation on such struggle, fear and censorship in storytelling, an invitation to extend our perception beyond the physical appearance, and ultimately, a statement about the right to narrate our own stories.
Structures transform into active protagonists in this rig-like city which disguises gruesome truths through its festive facade. The “All-seeing-eye Tower” stands tall, higher than everything else, making sure other characters like the “Injustice Police”, a character of arbitrary detention, and the “Instant Oases”, a character of constant displacement, do their job well. These carnivalesque machines are the characters that make up this city.”

“Many people predict that in the future automated systems will replace our work. There will be countless unemployed people, who will receive universal basic income(UBI). Then, where should we go and what can we do?
Hannah Arendt classified human behavior into three different categories. “labour” is obligatory behavior for survive, “work” is useful behavior for production. Through “Action”, we can express our identity. And “action” cannot be replaced by automated systems.
The underground space in this drawing is a space for “action”. The more you go down, the more powerful, social and communal action takes place. Hannah Arendt subdivided the action into three further. Accordingly, we structured the underground dome-shaped space. In the space of “Willing” at the top, individual actions are drawn, in the space of “Judgement” at the bottom, collective actions are drawn, and in the space of “Thinking” at the middle, the process between them is drawn.”

“The new Archicov-19 system is invading the world. It can solidify sand, or float amid clouds, parasite old cities or dive into the sea. It is a living organism made out of fungi, bacteria and nature, in symbiosis and behaving like an ecosystem. Earth can finally breathe, and we live happy and healthy in its bubbles.
When it grows in the desert it uses Bacillus Pasteurii bacteria to solidify sand so it is an artificial oasis in the dunes. When in the sea it makes shell structures with microalgae diatoms, and using the oxygen it produces. When it floats, it uses Helio in the bubbles of the architectural skin. When it parasites an old city, it uses garbage to grow, recycling materials. Life has changed so much since 2020, and now we live in peace, in this bioarchitecture, living according to our soul, in ecological balance with the whole nature.”

“‘Pinnacle at White Hill’ illustrates a self-contained, covered city at time when the Earth’s atmosphere has been degraded to the point that life in the natural environment is no longer sustainable. The caramel sky and red-brown earth visible beyond the protective film of the city cover tells the story of an environmental disaster out of control.
The central portion of the city is free from vertical supports with the exception of the Pinnacle. The Pinnacle is at once the center support for the dome’s superstructure, the focal point of the city, and the seat of city governance and management. Planning and zoning is evident in the layout of the public ways, parks, artificial waterways, and building limits. Green space dominates the city and is used as the organizing principal in the layout of White Hill, where recycling and reuse — including air, food and water — is required to survive.”
“Redwood” by Gregory Klosowski, Pappageorge Haymes Partners
Dubbed “Redwood”, this series of sketches are pure architectural escapism, testing exceedingly optimistic visions of possible futures, assuming the resolution of base societal issues through exotic approaches (limitless fusion energy, asteroid harvesting for raw materials, robotic assembly techniques). Intentionally fantastical, the intent is to spark imaginative thinking outside of practical constraints of current structural technologies.
In this iteration, towering structures drop into place, akin to redwoods falling in a forest, allowing new structures to shoot upward from the carcass, pulling cabling and piping upward, forming swaths of elevated fields, suspended transit systems stringing between the towering forms, and an endless array of habitats, blurring construction and organics.
While arguably irresponsible to brush aside big problems, its worth exploring, given decades of apocalyptic visions are have not proven persuasive. Taking an alternate approach, encouraging and positive visions might better spark the imagination and inspire consideration for wider timescales and broader solutions.
“Apartment #5, a Labyrinth and Repository of Spatial Memories” by Clement Laurencio
“In this frightening period of the pandemic, travel has become unsafe and restricted. The future bears uncertainty, if and when we may travel to experience new places, and re-visit places of our past. Places which once drew people are now “indefinitely” and “temporarily closed”, with no certain opening date. We are isolated in our homes…left with our memories of those faraway places. Locked in our dwellings, we long to be able to escape to a past before the lockdown, to places far away from here.
Residing in London, the dwelling curates spatial experiences from a recent voyage to India. Set both in real space and imaginary space, the project seeks to re-create those atmospheres and spatial conditions of the places remembered through memories.
The memories are rekindled, by manipulating scale, forced perspective and atmospheric phenomena of the places. However, they may become embellished, corrupted, re-imagined; a labyrinth of memories…”

THE OTHER HALF OF UNIONS

Welcome to episode number two of Break Through, a #NextFabMade podcast series. I’m your host, Ron Bauman, founder of Milk Street Marketing and NextFab member. This time, our guest is Charlie Anderson, CEO of Augean Robotics, which develops autonomous machinery to solve outdoor labor problems. Augean is a graduate of the NextFab accelerator program and recently raised a $1.5 million seed funding round. We sat down with Charlie to uncover his story, which begins on a 191 acre working fruit and vegetable farm outside Philadelphia, and how a love for robotics and automation was cultivated during this time.
Ron Bauman: So why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do here at NextFab?
Charlie: Yeah, so… I guess I grew up on a working farm outside of Philadelphia. Got out of
business school… Growing up, I was fairly obsessed with robotics and that obsession was driven in part by love for mechanization and technology within agriculture, and a hatred for doing things by hand. I would way rather sit in an air conditioned tractor cab doing something, then go out and do some tedious tasks in the heat. Got out of business school. Wanted to be in the Philadelphia area, went to go work for a big company called Case New Holland, which is Deer’s largest competitor. Trying to figure out a way to get into robotics and couldn’t find a path within that larger company. Finally quit that job, moved into Philadelphia into NextFab and build a team out here. That’s effectively what we led me here.
Ron Bauman: So let’s talk a little bit more about life on the farm, and now let’s make that connection to robotics because it’s not something you hear every day. Obviously, there’s farms, farming industry has technology, there’s technology in place to help make the farming work easier. Tell us a little bit more about how your love for robotics and automation grew out of that farm life.
Charlie: Yeah. So I guess, so my family farm is 190 acres near Valley Forge or King of Prussia. In the U.S., really in agriculture today, a lot of fruit and vegetable production is largely done with hand labor. And so my family farm, I started running farm equipment by age four or five. And I always wanted to do something where I can move a lever to do it, not do it. And so you know, again, I would way rather be in an air conditioned tractor cab doing something at scale, then out weeding, picking, pruning spot spraying, doing things by hand. And so that kind of led to a logical progression or interest in the autonomy within agriculture. And at the same time, I’m not an engineer by training. I kind of grew up wrenching on stuff but don’t have a mechanical or an engineering background, if you will. I kind of always saw my role as building a team and trying to build a company around solving issues with an agriculture. From a macro perspective, I think what you see within the world of autonomy is the… It’s very difficult to build something like a self driving car. A lot of the technologies that you read about, it’s not really there. It’s not really commercially viable. And the beauty of working on a farm is you’re not on a city street, you’re not going 80 miles an hour, you’re going three or four miles an hour in an environment that’s relatively constrained. So it’s actually environment that’s much more suited for a lot of autonomous technology today more so than some of the things you might see in a major setting.
Ron Bauman: So you weren’t too, too far out of the city. I mean Valley Forge, King of Prussia area.
Short drive back. Did you find yourself dreaming of life in the big city?
Charlie: You know, I love space and I love… I guess, not an engineer by training but love building things. So I grew up building furniture and wrenching on equipment. Rebuilding Jeeps and doing stuff like that. So I’ve always wanted, I guess, access to space. The draw for Philadelphia for me is really the talent that you have here. You’ve got some of the best robotics programs on the planet right here in Philadelphia, and a group of people that are really enthusiastic about building autonomy with very few companies here, which is something we’d like to change.
Ron Bauman: Now you went off to Harvard for college?
Charlie: Yes, I went to Amherst College for undergrad. A liberal arts degree undergrad. So not… I
got exposure to the broader world and then got an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Ron Bauman: So talk to us a little bit about how you came back and what your goals
and what you were looking to do once you got back.
Charlie: I’ve worked in a bunch of different places. I’ve worked in Richmond, Virginia, and New Jersey, Boston quite a bit. I always wanted to be back in this area. And I have a fiancee who lives in New York city, so I’m in a bunch of different geographies. But for me, I grew up here. I love the Philadelphia region. I really wanted to be back in the area. At the same time I wanted to do something in autonomy. I really loved companies like Kiva Systems and companies who are doing robotics work. When I got out of business school in 2014, I called hundreds and hundreds of people trying to find robotics or autonomy or something related to that type of technology in the area. And there really wasn’t much that I could find. Instead I went to go work for Case New Holland again, which is Deer’s largest competitor and spent about four years there selling and marketing farm equipment to people all over North America.
Ron Bauman: Well, you know that business, right?
Charlie: Yeah.
Ron Bauman: And you spoke the language.
Charlie: Yeah. Yeah. No, cause I, I can talk tractors all day long, better than pretty much anybody. But yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time selling and marketing equipment. At the same time trying to out how do I get from technology-enabled machinery to something that’s truly autonomous. That was really kind of where my interest lay. Started wrenching on stuff kind on the side, while at work, and that led towards a progression of, “Okay, the only way to do this is to start a company myself.”
Next Charlie offers his definition of entrepreneurship by approaching big problems and surrounding himself with talented people that share a common vision.
Charlie: I kind of define entrepreneurship as the pursuit of opportunity beyond resources controlled. The way that you, accrue resources towards some opportunity and, opportunities largely solving problems, is by approaching a big problem that a lot of people can get around. Or, get behind solving. When you look at agriculture today in Western economies and elsewhere, what you see is an ever dwindling number of people that want to go out and work in a 110 degree heat doing things like picking. It’s no longer something that people aspire to do, which is why often times it’s done by people that migrate into the company and are proportionately not as well paid as as other people in society. For me, having grown up on a working farm and having done a lot of that work myself, I guess for me, my purpose is when I look at my own small family farm, I imagine a world 10 or 20 years from now when you have robots running around doing different tasks and doing a lot of work that nobody in society increasingly wants to do. I think people are have better things to do, then go out and do a lot of the work that they have to do by hand, which is quite tedious.
Ron Bauman: So talk to us about, you mentioned, you know, building your team. I think that it’s one of the things that I’ve seen that I really like. In terms of what you’ve done, talk to us about how you build your team and the story about how you got to that point, because I find it very interesting.
Charlie: So, in November of 2017 I quit my job. I’m sitting in my parents’ basement being like, “Okay, well how do I, how do I figure out how to build robots?” Thinking where that could lead I, for one, started hacking together things. So just, on the side, I have a MIG welder and a Bridgeport mill and, access to some of those tools. So I started building prototypes. At the same time I reached out to literally every single robotics or autonomy engineer that I could possibly find. I have a list of a couple of hundred of them in this area. The beauty of this area is there’s a ton of talent in that particular field. Which is largely very accessible. People want to work in that space. And secondly, there’s not enough opportunity for them, or at least I certainly found it. Through that search I found Terry and Dennis, who are our Chief Robotics Officer and our CTO, and then also Vibhor, Magna, and Anthony.
Charlie: This team I view as one of the best teams on the world or in the world to build robotics in Ag. Dennis has a PhD from Penn. He’s spent the past couple of years with COSI, which is where Terry worked as well. And there they built a robot that can autonomously navigate a grocery store and scan the shelves using cameras to tell you what inventory is where. You can imagine the skill set that you need to develop that kind of technology. It’s pretty incredible. And then Vibhor, Anthony and Magna all really, really talented engineers with backgrounds in computer vision, mechatronics, deep learning and artificial intelligence. All of the things that you need to build robots that can reliably localize outdoors, navigate around, and handle all of the complexity of the great outdoors, which is where we work.
Ron Bauman: I think you told me at one point… I think that’s the best part is that you’re trying to find
a job at some of these other companies, but not being an engineer by trade. No such luck. So then you went out and you found the most talented engineers and automation experts that you could find, and applied your skills to that. And I think that’s really, really creative, very ingenious. And I think that’s what real entrepreneurs do. I think they surround themselves with the experts. The people who are the best in their field and are good at what they do. Understanding, “Okay, that’s what they do and I’m good at what I do. So let’s all get together and do something special.”
Charlie: Often times, looking in the rear view mirror, it could seem like it was a very clear process and everything worked out because of some genius in the room. And the reality was it was very much an emergent thing. Finding great people. For me, thematically, it’s always been this notion of, “Hey, I want to be in this region. I can see some of the skill sets that it has to offer and maybe I can go out and find them.” There’s a real, at least for me, trying to start a company or starting a company has been the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to do. It is the hardest thing. I have slept in more cars and more airports. I’ve been all over the country scrambling together capital and people and finding customers. It’s a really, really hard thing to do. And the best way to do that is to find a great group of people that share your mindset and your sense of purpose.
Ron Bauman: Where do you find inspiration now? I mean, obviously, you have your background
in agriculture and farming. Your love for automation obviously grew out of that, in terms of solving a problem or making life easier for people who work on farms. Where do you find inspiration today?
Charlie: Yeah, I love anything with, with gears, motors, a computer inside. So you can definitely, I’m an avid tinkerer. Certainly on my family farm, I go back all the time and I’m working on stuff, fixing stuff. Build a lot of furniture. Ride mountain bikes quite a bit. Go running every day. Do those types of things. Do a little bit of traveling. Not as much as my fiance probably would like. I owe a lot back to her on that front.
Ron Bauman: Sure. When are you getting married?
Charlie: In October.
Ron Bauman: Oh, congratulations.
Charlie: Yeah, I think for me, having a partner is incredibly important. Important as you go
through trying to build something and it’s incredible that people put up with me, effectively, along the way.
Ron Bauman: So is there any particular individual or people in your life that you’re drawing inspiration from that you consider a source of mentor-ship now?
Charlie: Certainly. Formally, as a company, we have a group of advisors. We were very kind of
selective or deliberate in terms of picking those people. A friend of mine, who’s quite a bit older from business school, who is a successful entrepreneur named Simo. He has been exposed to a lot of similar scenarios to the types of ones that we’ve dealt with or are dealing with now. Then two of our other advisors are both academically inclined. They’re both professors, one at Penn and one at Lehigh, who have backgrounds in autonomy. We consult them quite a bit, kind of as a source for inspiration, and also really to push back on us. I am looking for people to question what we’re doing. So, them quite a bit. And then for me especially, I come from a big family, so always my older sister or other family members, many of whom are entrepreneurs as well, what they think about different scenarios.
Charlie then told us about how he moved out of the basement of his farmhouse with no heat to NextFab, which did have heat, and Augean’s progression through their rapid accelerator program.
Charlie: I guess we got into their hardware accelerator around March of last year, I want to say. At that point in time I was literally doing it out of the basement of my house. So I had a basement out of a house and an unheated barn to build stuff. And this was in the winter, things were rough. So we moved into the here-
Ron Bauman: Got yourself a heater.
Charlie: I tried, actually, to get a wood fired stove in a old barn became a fire… Yeah. So there’s a
whole line there. But yeah. So I got into NextFab. It’s a heated building. It’s right in the center of Philadelphia.
Ron Bauman: Check.
Charlie: Yeah, check. You’ve got access to literally every single tool under the sun that you
possibly can need. Almost an excess amount of tools. I mean we do stuff sometime that… Sometimes our team will print out rubber grommets cause they have access to a 3D printer. We should buy that stuff. We don’t need to do that. But you’ve access to make anything you want under the sun here. And then also just the people. I think doing… Trying to build a company is incredibly isolating and if you are exposed during an area where you can reach out to 10 people any given day who are walking by, who are doing something kind of similar to what you’re doing, but in a totally different industry, that can be enormously helpful. I have questions that come up all the time. Like, how do you charge sales tax in California? And being able to, you know, talk with somebody who’s dealt with that issue or knows the right CPA to call is a huge help. Those areas of expertise go everywhere from how do you make something to, how do you structure a company, to how do you deal with the kind of the, the nitty gritty everyday things that inevitably come up.
Ron Bauman: So have you ever entered any other robotics competitions or…
Charlie: I guess not, not competition specifically. We certainly have been, we certainly have
pitched a couple-
Ron Bauman: It seems like there’d be a lot of them, that’s why I asked.
Charlie: Yeah. It’s an increasingly crowded space in terms of companies getting into it. There are very few, and especially within Ag tech and I guess within kind of urban technology, there are very few truly autonomous devices you can actually buy or use. And when I say autonomous, I mean vehicles moving around autonomously. So within agriculture today there’s about $3 billion worth of robotics solutions in some form globally. Most of those are robotic milking parlors. So they’re not robots on a farm. It’s something milking a cow autonomously, which is a very different kind of bucket in my head. At least within our space there is an evermore emerging space with more people getting into it. We believe we’re the first mover or we see ourselves as the first one. There’s nobody directly comparable to us. We’re moving pretty quickly.
Ron Bauman: Talk to us a little bit about the accelerator program, how you got involved in that, how
you were accepted into the program. What that process was like for you.
Charlie: A year and a couple of months ago, I was looking for places in Philadelphia where I could
build a robot, which means hardware, software and data. Also access to a set of resources that we needed to do so. We were looking for awhile, I mean there are a number of programs in Pittsburgh and other areas. But NextFab is really the only program I’m aware of in Philadelphia where have access to a facility like this and also into all of the expertise it takes to, to grow artists, you know, starting grow a company. We applied to it and at the time I had a barely functioning prototype. Came and we were accepted for an interview. So came in and I think they expressed interest in what we’re up to. I’m using the term “we” quite broadly. At that time it was pretty much just me. I was accepted and so then I moved in here, found a couple of my co-founders. It was an incredible amount of support.
Charlie: At the same time we also had applied to a number of other programs. NextFab was one
of our earliest investors. On a weekly basis, we were doing some sort of meeting with somebody here within the facility, talking about some of the things that go into starting a company, whether it’s, I don’t know, using CARNA to set up a cap table or how to structure an LLC versus a C-Corp and the benefits of going through that, or how do you protect some of the intellectual property that comes off of what you’re doing.
Charlie: As a founder you’ve got to do so many things at once. It’s not like being in a role where you’re doing one thing and just one thing, you’ve gotta be able to do everything from A to Z in terms of starting a business. So everything from accounting to how do you protect IP to how do you hire to, how do you find customers to… All of those things.
Charlie: The NextFab accelerator, for us, was access to on a weekly basis some feedback on what
we were doing. Really good access, as well, or kind of exposure to other entrepreneurs and entrepreneurialy-inclined people in this area. It provided a framework through which we could gain access to that as well, on a weekly basis, over the course of the program. Extremely helpful for us. I think out of that we built something pretty cool.
We then heard how solving a small but common problem led to the development of
Augean’s pilot product. The Burro.
Charlie: I don’t typically necessarily admit this, but believe it or not, I was go to work every day. I
had a colleague whose family had a chicken farm. Every single day his parents would walk through 12 chicken barns, a half mile through each barn, and they would clean them out. And so they would have to collect debris and, believe or not, some chickens die in a barn, so you have to pick them up into and carrying them out. So idea number one was to build up a robot to clean up chicken barns. And that did not go well. A very complicated thing to do. How to move out and around a very crowded indoor environment with tons of dust and a lot of ammonia in the air. It’s just a hard thing to do.
Charlie: From that, started wrenching around and fooling around. Going on robotshop.com and all the hobbyist websites, trying to figure out how to build things. Along the way what I discovered while talking with a ton of people within agriculture, was that people within Ag spent a lot of time and waste a lot of energy just carrying things around. If you can build a platform that just carries stuff around initially, as you evolve that thing commercially, you can start doing a lot more things autonomously as well. That general instinct became the driver behind Burro. And what Burro is, is a computer vision-based autonomous platforms. We’re not using high precision GPS to navigate, which means we can go in areas where there’s no machinery or whatsoever. It’s people doing work by hand, and by using computer vision you have something that is, believe it or not, actually cheaper than more expensive types of hardware and autonomy sensors. Simultaneously leads you to create a lot more value surrounding software and data.
Charlie: What we are using Burro for today is as a labor-saving device in handpicked crops. Think
things like table grapes, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, all the things you recognize as food. And what we found as we talk with those customers is that if you’re out there picking table grapes in Coachella in 110 degree heat this summer, you’re picking them into these 40 pound bins and then running them literally a couple of miles every single day on 150 pound a wheelbarrow in the heat. People doing that tend to, instead, prefer to just pick the shade with a virtual conveyor belt, running back and forth from where they’re picking to where stuff is being collected. Burro was designed initially to do that type of thing. And then over time, as it acquires more data, start delivering more and more autonomy in the space as well.
Ron Bauman: Awesome. That’s great. That’s amazing. Now, it does the picking as well, or is just that
more of a transport?
Charlie: Just the transport right now. There are tons of companies working on autonomous
harvesting right now. That has proven to be a very, very difficult task.
Charlie: You can imagine, if you are harvesting something autonomously… One, you have to
figure out how to get to it. Literally like how to move autonomously up and down a row. Then once you get to it, you have to be able to recognize it as something that is ripe or not ripe. You have to see it through occlusion. So oftentimes it’s behind, it’s behind weeds or behind the other berries themselves, or behind vegetation. And then you have to reach out to it, grasp it, twist it off or remove it. And you have to do that every couple of seconds to be able to even remotely replicate what a person can do.
Charlie: There have been literally tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars of venture capital
funding flowing into that space, especially in strawberries. We’re not in strawberry so much, but especially in strawberries. Even with all of that funding flowing in, most of the people that we interact with and most of our customers are suggesting that that’s still probably five or 10 years out before it starts being more widely present commercially. In the meantime, if you’re picking stuff autonomously, you still need to move it out of the field. It really helps to have a mobile platform that can carry your picking device to where stuff is being picked. Our platform is very compatible with a world in which stuff is autonomously picked. But at the same time, we’re not trying to do the autonomous picking today.
Ron Bauman: Gotcha, gotcha. So any other ideas in the works? I mean, what’s next after the Burro?
Charlie: Yeah. So each, each Burro is packed with cameras. It knows where it is in the world as
it’s moving around. It’s cloud connected and very data inquisitive. If you imagine a world in which you have robots, akin to Wall-E, running around and doing all of the tasks that people no longer want to do. Whether it’s picking, pruning, weeding, spot spraying, all of those other tasks, especially within agriculture, the way that platform starts… The way that that business evolves, we believe, begins with something like Burro.
Charlie: At this the second stage, what we’re working on is a lot of things surrounding crop scouting. So as you’re moving through a field, you can with with cameras, visually start to identify what yields look like, where are pests, where particular weeds, what’s going wrong where. And then at that third stage, so it’s our second stage being crop scouting, and then the third stage, once you know how to move around, what’s going wrong, where. Then we can close that autonomy loop and start actually treating or doing the tasks that crop scouting highlights. But that’s kind of, you know, a little bit further off in the distant future.
Ron Bauman: But it all ties back to the Burro? Burro’s going to sort of evolve it Burros as an
autonomous being.
Charlie: I think maybe an analogy helps a little bit with this. If you imagine kind of the PC ecosystem that emerged. Early on, there were tons of companies that were trying to build stuff from the ground up. What enabled a lot of advancements was the development of a couple of platforms that everybody used, whether it’s Microsoft with Windows or the Mac ecosystem. You have kind of one set of hardware or one set of software that a lot of people can leverage and use to do more things.
Charlie: We view Burro as a platform. It’s a collaborative robot. For most of the people within
agriculture it works. It enables them to work more productively. It’s collecting data and it’s modular expandable. Meaning that if others want to bolt their autonomy on top of ours, we really want to encourage that and want to enable that.
Ron Bauman: So more of a collaboration as opposed to competition.
Charlie: Exactly. I mean you, you know, you imagine, the simplest tasks that a toddler does is
incredibly hard to automate. And so if you imagine a world in which a lot of this stuff has done commercially and autonomously out there, it can’t be one big company. It can’t be one single company. It has to be a lot of companies tackling different problems. That’s the world we imagine painting.
Ron Bauman: Do you ever get scared about machine learning and the robots taking over and wiping us
all out?
Charlie: I think we’re a long, long, long, long way from that happens. I’m-
Ron Bauman: If it happens you’re going to be one of the ones I blame. I’m coming back and finding
you.
Charlie: No, I think it’s a valid question. It’s one that comes up consistently, right? There’s
something scary about autonomy to people in the sense of you’re replicating what people do. To me, the impact of technology consistently has been to magnify the force or the input that a person can… To magnify or increase the impact of the command that a person can give to the output side. So, a tractor allows one person to push a lever and move tens of thousands of pounds, whereas before they would be behind a horse moving a thousand pounds. I think the impact of autonomy will be to enable people to do things more productively and also to do things with a much more finessed treatment of each individual scenario.
Charlie: You can imagine in your garden if you see a weed, you kill it. If you see a particular type
of beetle, you kill it. On a big industrial scale, if you see one of those things, you do the same thing everywhere. The impact of autonomy is being able to very selectively treat things on a plant by plant or on a specific case basis, which I think actually has a lot of benefits for all of society. Using less herbicides. Less inputs to get more and more output.
Charlie: If you imagine a world in which global population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion or 10
billion people, which is what supposed to do in the next couple of decades, autonomy has got to be part of that thing. And if the alternative is not enough food for a growing population.
Ron Bauman: There is a real social impact to what you’re doing as well?
Charlie: Yeah. I would absolutely make that point. I think where people oftentimes get hung up
on autonomy is the notion of people losing their jobs as things are taking… I think if you were a bank teller you didn’t like an ATM machine. I know that’s a very blunt assessment, but the reality is that autonomy will usurp some tasks that people are doing. It’s my perspective that it actually creates a lot more opportunity in other areas and ones that are more consistent with, I think the work that people typically want to do.
Ron Bauman: You can apply the human talent to areas where it’s going to have more of an impact, not
these routine mundane tasks. Carrying something, or picking fruit or… That’s awesome.
After having our fears quelled that the robots would not be taking over anytime soon. We concluded the discussion by getting Charlie’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and the origin of his company’s name.
Charlie: I think persistence really pays off. Starting a company is the hardest thing you will ever do. It takes every single thing out of you. You will, almost inevitably… You read a lot of things in the press about people and in a retrospect, things seem like they were incredibly successful and really, really easy to get going. And the reality is far the inverse. Nobody’s brilliant. People start out with an idea and they keep at it and keep at it and keep at it. And that leads, or potentially leads, to a big pay off our big reward, in terms of creating more impact in the world than you might otherwise get if you were in just a job.
Charlie: I think my advice would be that persistence really does pay off. There’s some pain in
that, but the reward is definitely worth it.
Ron Bauman: I’m curious, where did Augean… Augean, am I saying all right?
Charlie: Yeah. There’s the Augean stables. It’s a Greek story. So Hercules routed a river through a
stable instead of cleaning it out by hand. It’s this notion of doing a distasteful task that nobody should do in a clever or creative way. That’s the original source of the idea.

A Night in Scranton
We all take jobs that lead us far off our intended career path. Mine started in the summer of 1973 as a newly minted Greyhound bus driver, trying to make extra money while teaching school in Buffalo, New York. I answered their help wanted ad in the Buffalo Evening News out of curiosity and as more of a joke than anything else. What does an elementary school teacher have to offer a bus company known for a dog as its trademark? They explained at the interview that teachers made the perfect fill-ins during their heavy travel times. We appeared clean cut and were polite with the traveling public. I bought their pitch and signed up for a new driver school that started in March. I was all of 24 and eager to make extra money to supplement my abysmal teacher’s pay. My wife and two infant daughters were my main concern in this venture into transportation.
In 1973 the highway buses all shifted with manual transmissions. This seemed like a piece of cake for me since I drove a VW Beetle with a four speed. I was soon in for a surprise. The industrial transmissions used in buses required a technique known as a double clutching between gears. The entire month of March was devoted to our mastery of the elusive art of timing our gear shift movement to the speed of the engine and that of the bus. Each shift required two presses of the clutch, not one as in a car. It was a mechanical ballet that needed perfect timing in order to avoid the ugly and annoying sound of grinding gears and a lugging diesel engine. The clutch was also industrial and needed a lot more effort than my little VW. I went directly from Greyhound class to soaking my left knee in a hot bath at home.
By April, they’d culled out several of the teachers for their inability to master the art of the double clutch transmission. I felt fortunate to still be in the running. We were now onto the many other issues involved in driving a forty foot long highway bus. Tight roadways and heavy traffic are not your friend. Weather is always in the back of your mind. A bus will hydroplane in a heavy downpour. The wind can force you into another lane of traffic. Snow and ice are the food of legendary driver room stories. Slowly, I was becoming a bus driver, sans the rough edges of a Ralph Kramden. I was to be the Greyhound model of the trade.
This all led up to my night in Scranton. The regular driver on the run from Buffalo to Scranton was Ron Perry. He was in his early thirties and sported a modified Elvis haircut very much out of date by the seventies. He’d been assigned to train me on this difficult run and he instructed me to sit in the first passenger seat on the right, take out my route schedule, and keep notes.
As we broke the state line into Pennsylvania, the road narrowed and the shoulder rose up on one side. “Deer will leap off those banks at night,“ Ron remarked, “My buddy had one come through the windshield and kill the lady sitting where you are.” Perhaps the extra money no longer sounded so enticing. This was a real driver speaking without the Greyhound PR department providing the script. I knew from teaching that nothing equals the wisdom in the trenches. What was I in for?
We rolled into Scranton around five and turned the bus over to a Philadelphia driver for the remainder of the run. Ron walked me through his log book entries and took a brief peek at my notes. “Hopefully you won’t see much of this run,” he said, which didn’t sound very encouraging. “Wait till you see the Jeremy Hotel, only the best for Greyhound!” As we walked from the bus depot into downtown Scranton, I suddenly became aware of the old coal town’s state of decay. Soot ran in streaks off window sills. The brownstone and brick buildings were blackened like fire ruins. The sidewalks were devoid of activity and many of the local shops were already closed. “This is the only diner open. I like their fried baloney plate for three bucks.” Mr. Perry was not a man of complicated culinary needs. We went inside and sat at the counter as the heavy scent of the fryer filled my nostrils. “Two coffees and a menu for the new guy.” The waitress pointed to the board above the short order window. “It’s all there, hun, and if you don’t see it, just ask.”
Lo and behold, there it was. Charbroiled liver and onions with the side note “new.” Charbroiled was new in the seventies and I couldn’t imagine what it could do to rescue liver and onions from the bottom of my list of edible disasters. Knowing that Ron would soon have that baloney plate special in front of him, I didn’t want to be outdone in the search for politically incorrect food. Liver is high in cholesterol and acts as a filter for an animals toxins. If the road didn’t kill me, the food sure would. “I think I’ll try your liver and onions tonight,“ I said. The waitress jotted down our orders on her pad and hung a copy on a little stainless steel wheel for the cook to view. Ron smirked and remarked that he was glad we had separate rooms.
I actually enjoyed the charbroiled liver and onions and finished my entire plate before Ron got through with his fried baloney. We both ate for less than our Greyhound dinner allowance of five dollars and off we went to the Jeremy Hotel across the street from the diner. The Jeremy had once been the grand residence of downtown Scranton in the days of coal. Hard times and hard traffic had left a worn track in the once plush carpet from the entrance to the clerk’s desk at the rear of the lobby. “Hey Ron, another new driver tonight?” the clerk asked. He obviously knew his regulars and my uniform left little to ask about my profession. “Did Ron tell you about our TV policy?” I’d never heard of a TV policy and shook my head. “They’re portables you carry up to your room. The black and whites are two dollars a night and the color ones are three dollars. Greyhound has your room charge but you need to cover your TV out of pocket.” Ron handed the clerk his two bucks and grabbed a small black and white portable from a closet behind the clerk’s desk. “I’m beat, forget the TV. I’m hitting the hay,” I said. Then the clerk said the oddest thing. “Radio is free. It hangs on the wall above your bed and has five local stations. Oh, did Ron tell you about your bathroom?” This was getting really strange. “You share it with your neighbor. You lock him out when you enter and unlock him when you exit. Please don’t forget this, especially in the middle of the night.” A shared bathroom? A radio with five stations that hung on a wall? What year was this? Was I still in America?
Ron hit the stairs with more wonderful words of advice. “Use the stairs, you’ll wait forever for that old elevator, sometimes it sticks between floors. We need to meet down here in the lobby at five AM. Don’t be late.” My training experience had just hit a new low. What if they stuck me in this shithole all summer? I didn’t think this old fire trap even had AC. I was writing my resignation letter in my mind as I climbed the worn wooden staircase that led to my second floor room. I was holding a large skeleton key. I’d only seen this type of key in old movies and at my grandmother’s house years ago. The hallway leading to my room smelled of years of stale cigarette smoke and spilled booze. Did anyone pay good money to stay here? Greyhound corporate needed to hold its Christmas party here.
I entered my room like a thief, cautious yet curious at the same time. It was clean but dark in all aspects. The walls had been painted a dark green and the furniture was made of dark wood, an old design from before the war. The head of the bed was pushed against the far wall and there was a strange art deco metal box the size of a toaster one foot above the headboard. What in the dickens was this contraption? I moved closer and could plainly make out a small speaker in the center and two knobs on each side near the bottom. One knob had a pointer attached and was labeled with the letters A-E. The other was circular with “volume” written in small print above the knob. So this must be the free radio? My God, I was born in 1948 and I’d never come across such a strange device. I carefully turned the volume knob and sure enough there rose that distinctive low fidelity sound of an AM station. I flipped the selector knob through the remaining alphabet. Each letter brought another station with two of them smothered in static. I knew from an earlier job in broadcasting that these were most likely not local stations. What an odd device, and it still worked. I’d bet most guests had dismissed this little box as a joke left over from the glory days of booming downtown Scranton in the 40s and a hotel so broke it couldn’t afford to remove useless junk from the walls.
At that moment, I could hardly wait to see the shared bathroom I’d been warned about. I knocked lightly on the dark wooden door and twisted the old glass knob, and, there it was, a bathroom right out of the Great Gatsby era. Small white hexagonal ceramic tiles on the floor and shiny square white tiles on the side walls. Halfway up they ended in a black ceramic border that ran the perimeter of the room. On one side was a massive claw hammer tub and exposed brass fixtures with white ceramic handles labeled hot and cold. A chain with a rubber stopper hung from the overflow drain. A strange oval shower curtain hung from the ceiling. Opposite the tub was a pedestal sink flawed with eggshell like age cracks and again sporting two large brass faucets with white ceramic handles. A small hotel soap labeled “The Jeremy” was neatly placed on one side. The purchasing agent must be in a time warp or have a strange sense of humor. Would anyone want to be found with that bar of soap in their travel bag? The toilet sat next to the sink and was a good six inches higher than my new one at home. It sported a black wooden toilet seat of the horse collar style. The brass attachments had long ago turned green from missed aims. I locked the guest door at the far end and drew a bath. I didn’t trust the shower and I felt like a good soak was a better choice.
I’d done plenty of shifting and my left knee ached. I sat down in the oversized tub and laid my head back on a rolled towel. I felt like I was 24 going on 60. My doubts surrounded me like the bath water. How did one make a career out of this type of work? Why spend three nights a week away from your family in a run down shithole in the middle of nowhere? Whatever good thoughts I had of a Greyhound career died that night in Scranton. I heard a knock on the guest door and shouted that I needed five minutes to clear out.
Back in my room, I stared at my bed and the small grey box above the headboard. Let’s see what this living antique has to offer, I thought. I switched through two stations and heard a familiar voice from my youth. It was Rod Serling introducing a radio play on the Zero Hour. I’d loved him when I was younger and decided that this was what I’d settle on. The play was about the Bermuda Triangle and the possible reason for its mysterious goings on. I laid there and listened, and I found myself enjoying it. I could visualize every detail in vivid color. Radio was perfect for storytelling, and I felt fortunate that I’d foregone the television and saved three dollars in addition. The play ended with the explanation that the Triangle was a space port for aliens. Rod signed off in his distinctive deep voice and I went to sleep early.
Years passed and I left both Greyhound and teaching behind for a far more lucrative career in sales. I traveled to many parts of the world, always eating at fine restaurants and staying at five star hotels with all the amenities. Of those experiences, I can’t recount one as fondly as I can that night in Scranton in 1973.

Our team at Falconer Electronics works with many entrepreneurs creating brand new electrical products that make our lives better. Perfecting a new product on the first try is extremely challenging if not impossible. It takes a great deal of patience and determination. Also, plenty of trial and error. Thomas Edison represents that tenacious entrepreneurial drive to reach success.
Therefore, we decided to dig deep into the life of Thomas Edison to show his massive accomplishments with New Product Development. Being in the electrical manufacturing sector, we dedicate a huge thank you to Mr. Edison’s relentless pursuit to light up the world.
Childhood
Nancy Edison gave birth to Thomas Alva Edison on February 11th, 1847 in Milan, Ohio and he was the youngest of seven kids. Edison only spent seven years in Ohio before moving to Port Huron, Michigan. In Port Huron, Thomas spent only three months attending school. This being the only formal schooling he had before homeschooling by his mother, a formal school teacher. While developing a great interest in experimenting he used pocket change to purchase inexpensive chemicals. Edison’s mind wanted to see the properties of the chemicals and compare them to the textbooks.
Growing Businessman?
When Edison was eleven he sold his family garden produce in the market. By the age of twelve, he sold newspapers on the trains of Grand Trunk Railroad between Port Huron and Detroit. As his business grew, he hired boys as assistants on the trains. Also, he opened two small stores in Port Huron. He gained the nickname Al and all the trainmen called him that. Thomas transferred some of his chemicals to the baggage car of the train, along with a small hand printing press from Detroit. He had the first railway chemical laboratory and railway printing press. As a result, his paper “The Weekly Herald” had grown to 800 copies.
In 1862, at the young age of fifteen, Edison worked regularly an eighteen-hour workday. One afternoon, the baggage car ran over a rough piece of track. With Edison’s laboratory inside it jolted a stick of phosphorus to the floor. This started a fire in the car that took all the efforts of Edison and the train crew to subdue. When the train finally came to a halt, all his laboratory equipment and his printing press were thrown out on the platform. This accident led to be the cause of Edison’s hearing loss that came in the years following. He found that his deafness became an asset, and kept his sunny, kind and serene personality.
Opportunities
In August 1862 another incident occurred. A boxcar was being shunted, at considerable speed, to a side track. The station agent’s little son had been playing on this sidetrack. Edison on the platform saw the incoming danger. He jumped on the track and reached the child just in time to haul him clear. One front wheel of the car struck his heel and threw him with the child to the side of the track. Their faces and hands were cut, but no serious injury. On the following day, the station agent offered to teach Edison the Morse telegraphy, with a view to helping him secure a position as railway telegraphist. He accepted, and in a few months, taking lessons three times a week, he became proficient at the keys. For the following six years, Edison had a career of telegraphist.
As a result, Edison became part of the service of the Western Union Telegraph Company. This was through a number of cities in the middle west, and the south. He was a noted rapid and accurate operator, frequently overseeing to press work on night duty. He spent all his available leisure time in experiment and study.
Edison’s Entry into Inventing
In October 1868, when Edison was 21 years old, he applied for his first American patent to a vote recorder. This device enabled the affirmative and negative votes of a seated voting assembly to be swiftly recorded and automatically totaled at the chairman’s desk. Edison was successful in demonstrating the invention at Washington. Unfortunately, there was no demand for a mechanism of this kind. Edison went back to his little workshop in Boston and gave up the career of a telegraphist changing entirely to the invention..
In 1869, Edison traveled to New York. One morning in New York, Edison was standing near a transmitter. It became suddenly deranged by an internal accident, causing all the indicators in the connected brokers’ offices to go bad. He knew the nature of the derangement and volunteered to correct it. He was able to restore normal operation quickly. This led to his being made manager of the system which he improved and was part of developing new inventions.
A few days after Black Friday, September 24th, 1869 when gold went to a high premium, he entered into the first recorded American firm of Consulting Electrical Engineers. After the successful sale of some of his inventions to the Western Union Telegraph Company, Edison opened machine shops at Newark, New Jersey. Also for invention and manufacture. He kept 50 workmen busy, and a night force as well. He was foreman, which meant living on the premises. Here he was part of developing a number of telegraph inventions. The quadruplex for sending and receiving four messages simultaneously over a single wire. Also the high-speed automatic telegraph. As a result, he took out nearly 120 American patents, almost all in electric telegraphy.
Adulthood
In 1871, Edison married Mary G. Stillwell and had three children, Marion E., Thomas A., and William L. Edison. In 1876, Edison moved his laboratory from Newark to Menlo Park, New Jersey where he could concentrate on inventing. This was the year of the Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia, where the new Bell telephone was first shown to the public. Edison produced a carbon-button transmitter. This virtually converted the telephone from an experiment to a commercially available apparatus. It was in his experimenting with the carbon transmitter that Edison coined the now well-known call word “Hello.” In 1877, Edison started developing the first stages of his phonograph or talking machine.
In 1878 he took up the problem of “subdivision of the electric light”. He found that a commercial incandescent lighting system would require its lamps to be connected “in parallel” not “in series.” After a number of failures, he made a successful lamp. It had a filament of a carbonized cotton thread, mounted in a highly evacuated glass globe, and sealed-in platinum-wire leads. In October 1879, his lamp glowed for 45 hours before breaking.
Edison decided to open a central incandescent lamp station in the center of the downtown business district with underground conductors. Due to Edison being his own chief engineer, the Pearl Street Station turned on its current to the lamps in the district of New York. The new incandescent lamps won popularity through their steadiness, coolness, freedom from combustion products, and reduced fire hazard. He saw the successful introduction of the incandescent lamp into factories. Also, homes would immediately admit the use of the electric motor for operating machinery and household power devices. One of these discoveries in 1883 was the “‘Edison effect”, a discharge that occurred in the lamps, when being overused.
The Final Years
Edison moved his laboratory from Menlo Park to New York City, after his wife’s death in August 1884. In 1886, he married MissMina Miller of Akron, Ohio. They made their home at West Orange, New Jersey. They had three children Madeleine, Charles, and Theodore.
Edison built a laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey. He started work there in October 1887. He perfected the phonographand made a long series of other inventions. This included thealkaline storage battery, the moving-picture camera, synthetic rubber, the telescribe, the magnetic ore separator, various improvements in manufacturing concrete and other chemical products, as well as many war inventions for the United States Government. At the time of his death on October 18, 1931, He had received 1,093 U.S. patents, a total still untouched by any other inventor.
