Because I sure as hell do.

Anyway, I want to see which ones I should prioritise, so I’m doing a poll. Out of the 97 fic concepts i have in the vault, all with varying levels of completion, I have narrowed it down to 12 (the max number of poll options on Tumblr).

Category 1- ANGST:

1. Ok not too many spoilers for this one but it’s SUPER angsty. All I can say is Leo faces a very creative punishment from Nemesis for cheating the prophecy and coming back to life, and it’s called “The only sad person in paradise” (undertones of Valgrace).

2. Leo deals with coping with the trauma of dying. LOT of angsty headcanons, including one where the design for the chb bead for the summer hoo is set in was the moment of Leo’s death. And he just has to keep that around his neck the whole time, and it’s chocking him. The opening line is “Every so often, Leo needed to remind himself that his heart was still beating.”

3. A curse befalls camp half-blood that’s slowly reversing the effects of their powers. Hecate cabin’s spells are being undone, plants are un-growing, arms healed by Apollo cabin are re-breaking. Magic is being unwound, and then Leo’s body starts to ache, and he realises… does that include a certain Physician’s Cure?

Category 2- VALGRACE

4. Platonic Valgrace (Romance implied)- “Never go to bed angry”- Leo and Jason have an argument on the Argo II. Jason thinks Leo won’t understand him because he’s never had to live up to the expectations of leadership that come with being a child soldier. Leo thinks Jason won’t understand him because he’s never had to fend for himself, he believes everything Jason has is because of who his father is. They storm off (Jason in the literal sense), argue with themselves for a bit- I did a really cool thing where I switch POVs every line or so, as their arguments parallel each other, like in a TV show where two characters are rehearsing a conversation with the other, but using the HOO multiple-POV thing- and then they go to sleep. They both have weird vision/flashbacks/prophetic dreams, where they experience a day in the other’s childhood. They then realise they completely misunderstood one another, and they’re not as different as they thought.

5. Jason and Leo go to New York pride. That’s the whole fic.

6. Instead of… whatever that ending to BOO was, the Gods reward Leo for his sacrifice by bringing Esperanza Valdez back to life. She thanks Jason for taking care of Leo while she was gone, and they have a heart-to-heart. They are officially boyfriends in this. Jason keeps being reminded of his own reunion with Thalia, and how Leo had stayed with him through that. He vows to do the same.

Category 3- MARRIED VALGRACE:

7. Leo and Jason get married (A classic “Wedding Episode”)

8. Just a fic describing married life with Leo and Jason- it’s called “Violets and Marigolds”

9. A fic from the POV of Leo and Jason’s kid, Isabella Valdez. Some angst, but I don’t have the full plot outlined yet. She’s adopted, and they don’t know her true godly heritage, and Leo suspects she might be mortal, and maybe Lupa made a mistake. Leo and Jason argue over whether she should join the Legion (They’re living in New Rome). Leo struggles with his fear of hurting the people he loves with his powers.

Category 4- MISCELLANEOUS:

10. Platonic Perleo- Percy and Leo get captured by government agents and have to escape Area 51 (Vaguely inspired by an episode of Helluva Boss)- VERY NERDY. This is a very fun one.

11. Leo talks to Hestia about… life, I guess. I started writing this while still on TLH and never found an ending, but it’s a good concept. Leo learns to accept his powers as something that can be good, when he only sees the bad. Hestia tells him “If fire was only about danger and destruction, then it would be the symbol of Ares, not Hephaestus.”

12. Thalia, Luke and Annabeth find little Leo while on the run. Leo and Annabeth bond over engineering. Luke tries to use Leo’s trauma as leverage to get Leo angry at the Gods. He tries to put the blame of Leo’s mom’s death on Hephaestus, since he’s responsible for giving Leo his powers. He points out how the Gods are all-powerful, and yet they leave the four of them- their own children- to starve on the streets. Leo in canon harbours a lot of resentment for his situation growing up, and Luke could easily spin that to justify his own anger.

Gosh I love the design of the Loom. Very creepy, very alien. Their behaviour reminds me a bit of a more monstrous, animalistic version of the Reapers from Doctor Who's Father's Day. I bet the Doctor Who designers would love an alien like this, were it not for constraints of live action + practical effects/VFX. I really love the freedom you get with animation to just get weird with it. Anyway, is the reason that the Loom found them so fast because Voyager-A and Janeway lead them there?

sooooometimes? occasionally i am moved by the desire to Empty Out My Inbox, at which point i reply to all the unread comments in there, but otherwise i normally reply to comments by friends and comments on more recent fics. the older stuff, especially the de artfest stuff, gets more frequently ignored lmao (although someone commented the loveliest thing the other day on one of those fics <3)

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

there are several in contention for this! (i feel) an overwhelming need (the moors) is a character study from a very upsetting play wherein the protagonist is literally eaten at the end, which is A Bit Not Good. i can't stand to see you bleed (the wolf and the watchman) has a more ambiguous ending but also ends with the distinct possibility that cecil will just straight up Die a few minutes off page and everyone is very sad about it. blizzard of pumice piled six feet high (goncharov) does of course end with mutually assured destruction and a fun little murder-suicide-murder situation that they are both resignedly sad about. there are a couple others that Are Angsty but not so much as these i think

7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

once again, a couple options here! first is leave your body at the door (killjoys), which is a huge epic of legacy and mourning and ends with a bittersweet but also incredibly triumphant chapter about love and family. much as the ending itself is tinged with sadness, considering the amount of Torment we had to get through to wind up there puts this fic on the map for this category! alsoooo i think The (G)Hosts of Satellite's Past (mystery science theater 3000) gets up there, because it's basically just. tooth-rottingly sweet found family nonsense in space

8. do you get hate on fics?

not that i can remember? but it's also entirely possible i've just deleted a few of those comments and subsequently forgotten about them lmao. although it must be said that someone commented on my mst3k fic being VERY NITPICKY about my adherence to the given canon of the show and the liveshows and the livestreams and i'm like. bitch. i have not watched every livestream ever and i do not pay attention to the liveshows. also the show's canon can't agree with itself leave me alone shshjsjhs

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

uhhh i did a couple times at one point? but that was many years ago and it was never published. nowadays i've almost considered it exclusively for The Bit (ie relationships where I Think It Would Be Terribly Funny) but also The Bit has not yet overcome my Anxiety and Lack Of Skill. buuuut i will occasionally write The Craziest Metaphorical Shit You Will Ever See. meaning. that cannibalism is also an allegory y'know?

10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

i've certainly pondered many in my time but i'm unsure i've actually published any— WAIT I JUST REMEMBERED SPYTOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT SENTENCE. whoopsies. so yes! i do! i've only published one of them and it was a spies are forever/hadestown crossover that got Massively bigger than i ever intended (so much fanart! curt mega saw one of the pieces! hadestown official put one of the pieces on their story! shoutout to all you lovely artists and writers! @szollibisz / @considerablecolors / @teethworm / @owen-not-carvour <333333). there is also an Ancient artifact buried in my google docs that hasn't seen the light of day that's. a voltron: legendary defender/crazyhead crossover? to date it's one of my longest incomplete works and rereading it, despite how old it is, is remarkably pleasant like i was possessed by some sort of Good At Writing gremlin and it's surprisingly good. wonder if i should dredge some of that monstrosity up someday.....

in terms of unpublished works, i have written So many fics with @nico-demons, since we were cringey middle schoolers together, but when looking at what's actually on my ao3, the only collaboration is with @chiropteracupola! while we don't actually share documents writing our flintlock fortress works, we have a massive shared bank of Lore and double check with each other constantly while we're working on our fics. so it's co-written not in practicality, but in literally every other capactiy

14. what’s your all time favourite ship?

o god i never have an answer for this. i cycle through fandoms so quickly it's hard for ships to have a huge staying power? but given that we're entering year two of this ship in earnest and year like. seven. of this ship in a half-pondered capacity, i'm gonna have to give it to joel robinson/mike nelson of mystery science theater! they will never ever leave my head!!!!!

15. what’s a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

oof i have a Couple of these. first and foremost is contagion (gravity falls), a monster falls/timeskip gravity falls concept that i plotted SO MUCH OF and then got so intimidated by i could only write a couple pages before feeling like whatever i wrote wouldn't match up with what i'd been imagining. much as i'd love to muscle through someday and actually get the concept down, i find it Unlikely that'll ever actually happen. same with a joel/mike mst3k fic concept that i've been kicking around for a couple years surrounding mike's return to earth and trying to find joel again. once again, i got out over my skis and got so scared of executing the concept it's hard for me to imagine i ever get to it shjshjs

16. what are your writing strengths?

i've been told on numerous occasions that i'm really good at mimicking character voice (and possibly author voice, but that's usually more secondary)! i have a very sound and rhythm based memory, so writing dialogue has always been a strong point of mine, as i can basically hear what the character would be saying in their way of saying it. i also consider myself really good at crafting well thought out/intricate plots!

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

FINISHING THINGS. JESUS CHRIST. i'm so bad at mustering any sort of followthrough on projects that are either longer than my usual or i've been working on past a couple of weeks of inspiration. a part of this i'm Sure is the adhd but also i'm miserable at writing anything to completion past a few one shots.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

depends on the context, depends on the language. flintlock fortress in particular has characters of Many Nationalities coming together in a very specific context? thus far i've been rather loath to write extended sections of dialogue in other languages, but i can usually manage small sections, especially french (took it for three years in high school and apparently Something stuck). otherwise i tend to skirt around it or double check with people more familiar with it

19. first fandom you wrote for?

i was discussing this with @chiropteracupola the other day actually!! my first fic Ever saved to my google drive is a wild kratts/my little pony crossover! and i would continue to cross mlp over with Many Things! so i would say my little pony was my first written-for fandom, purely based on the fact that it served as such frequent crossover material

20. favourite fic you’ve written?

this is an interesting one! i have a few fics that have a special place in my heart for different reasons. i'm incredibly fond of Try Again, Die Again (detroit: become human/detroit evolution) because i felt insanely clever and actually managed to execute the concept i wanted in a way that was very close to what i originally imagined. it's one of my more action-packed stories and upon rereading it i'm actually still really proud of it. another one i'm extraordinarily fond of is strangely enough Where The Sun Can't Find Me (spies are forever), which is a short little werewolf!curt one shot! just the right amount of Meat to appeal to me and i really like the prose style i went with for it. honorable mention once more goes to leave your body at the door (killjoys) but i've talked about her already so. Moving On. lastly i loooove don't give it a hand, offer it a soul (team fortress 2/haunted by your hand crossover), because it's a Ghost Story and Ghost Romance and A Little Gross and Full Of Sadness. what fun what fun :3

Israel uses bunker-destroying ammunition to hit Hamas tunnels in Gaza

Israel would have used bunker-destroying ammunition to attack Hamas-controlled tunnels in Gaza, which serve as a lifeline for the besieged region.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Israeli military launched a campaign to hit these tunnels in northwestern Gaza, employing powerful bunker-destroying bombs to hit Hamas underground positions.

Bunker destroyers, specialized ammunition designed to penetrate hardened or deeply buried targets, fall into two main categories. The first type is equipped with a reinforced nose to resist impact, using its weight and a delayed fuse to penetrate the ground or structures before detonation. The second type carries double loads, with the initial load creating an entry point at the target, allowing the main load to detonate, causing substantial destruction.

These recent developments coincide with the fact that Gaza is shrouded in smoke, marking the fourth day of Israeli bombing. The enclave, blocked on all fronts by land, air and sea, relies heavily on a network of tunnels for vital imports, including food, weapons and fuel. These tunnels also serve as crucial outposts for Hamas, assisting in storage and transportation.

The use of bunker destroyers by the Israeli military has significant strategic implications. In the 2014 Gaza War, Israeli forces allegedly faced challenges when they attacked Hamas in tunnels, resulting in casualties between their own ranks. Bunker destroyers provide a means of attacking Hamas from a safe distance, reducing the exposure of Israeli soldiers to such risks.

Israel's arsenal of bunker destroyers, which includes the advanced GBU-72 model, comes from both domestic production and U.S. acquisitions. The GBU-72, sought by Israel in 2021, has the capacity to penetrate up to 30 meters of earth or 6 meters of concrete, causing destruction in the vicinity and generating shock waves capable of causing collapses in underground structures.

In addition to their effectiveness against tunnel networks and underground installations, ground-penetrating munitions are also useful in the demolition of buildings and high towers, penetrating from the top to the foundations and causing structural collapse, rather than a conventional explosion.

a dais at daybreak - a full fantasy book including a large scale fantasy war, jeongjian enemies to friends to lovers, and questionable morals and high stakes all in one, where a cursed-to-be-immortal jeonghyeon is freed by his worst nightmare, jianyu, and has to face the oncoming threat of a civil war because of it (compete, 60 chapters)

another gleam in the dark - my zerobaseone x detroit become human crossover, featuring main characters hanbin, gyuvin, and ricky. includes heavy canon divergence to allow non-fans of dbh to read as well. a fic where three storylines intertwine in a futuristic city—an android built to hunt other androids, an android taking care of a human, and an android who loses everything and becomes the face of a revolution (ongoing, 15/28)

five nights at haobin's - a crackfic fnaf crossover ft. min wage worker park hanbin, anthonny phone guy, haobin being fazbear entertainment, and animatronics that look a little too much like zb1 members, where park hanbin decides to work for hao and hanbin and ends up getting tangled in an even deeper mess (complete, 5 chapters)

that love song locker combination - a junhwan-centric highschool romance comedy set in the late 2000s, with ggang team plot, cliches, and dog union friends as well, where junhyeon comes to find out that his own friends are not the people they seem, and after getting stranded with one of the outcasts, finds his own identity (complete, 16 chapters)

guardian of the unholy - a paralogue for a dais at daybreak, centered around kamjay involving alien technology and outer space where jay is called to kamden's land in order to investigate their ancient technology, finding out a whole new world and an even bigger threat in the process (complete, 5 chapters)

tea time for two - an alice in murderland manga au of zb1 with rickgeon, massive stakes, magical abilities, toxic and codependent relationships, chekov's armory, and heavy action and plot twists both, where ricky must compete with his eight other siblings in a death game to inherit the zerobaseone estate, discovering the truth behind his past and just how complicated his family runs. my best work to date (complete, 25 chapters)

before the light fades - a zb1 x the endless movie fic, with haoricky brothers, a ufo death cult in the form of zerobaseone, and lovecraftian monsters both brothers have to face, along with their past where the two of them struggle for control in the wake of their menial life and the loss of their mother (complete, 6 chapters)

surface tension - a gunhao action/adventure secret agent high school undercover au with body-snatching, dry humor, and an enemies to lovers romance with two rivals who can't stand each other but have to look out for each other in the wake of a possible apocalypse beginning to start at a high school (ongoing, 9/11)

★  ⸻   COMPASSION: 8/10. i would say 10 because it really is Her Thing, you know --- her foundation --- but nobody's perfect. laura gets frustrated easily, she can be very impatient, and she sometimes has a difficult time not judging what people get worked up over. and like, yeah, she is aware that she shouldn't do that, and she feels bad about it, but what can i say! at the end of the day, being a 'good victim' is not her priority, nor is it mine, and laura's deep-rooted compassion is not a result of The Trauma. if anything, the strength it had in order to survive what she's been through (and still score a high number) is the testament you're looking for.

★  ⸻   BITTERNESS: 5/10. it isn't a driving force in her life, but it's definitely something she has difficulty ditching entirely; it can flare up, especially when she's already down. make her petty and jealous and mean.

★  ⸻   HAPPINESS: well, until junior high, she was consistently close to a 10. i think it's important to understand that. her biggest stressors were making sure her mom was doing okay and that she kept up with her 500 different extracurricular activities. then, for a long time, she ran from about a 2 to 4. for the most part, once she's past that (late teens), i'd probably put her around a 6 --- but it's also kind of just something she stopped thinking about. it doesn't really compute as a need.

★  ⸻   POLITENESS: her default setting is about a 4/10, but she definitely "knows better". she's capable of an 8 or 9, but if she's scoring that high, she's definitely being paid for her time.

★  ⸻   MORALITY: her own? 10/10: you won't catch her doing anything that she genuinely believes is wrong of her to do. i think most people would disagree with many of her assessments and give her a 6 or 7, but that's not really my problem. i trust her judgment more than theirs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

★  ⸻   CHIVALRY: if you can negate gender (both hers and other people's), probably like an 8/10. laura is always the knight in any fairy tale analogy.

★  ⸻   PRIDE: 7/10, generally. closer to 10 in her 'secret diary' era, in the absolute least constructive way. hence the abrupt turnaround.

★  ⸻   HONESTY: 6/10. she doesn't have a problem with lying and she will do it without needing a reason --- but it's not typically her first inclination, especially once she's old enough to stop answering to Authority Figures™. there's not much else to say about it. withholding / lying through omission is harder for her to avoid, but it's mainly just because she is too type A to live.

★  ⸻   BRAVERY: 10/10. yeah. laura is not fearless, but what she is is the human embodiment of "stay afraid, but do it anyway".

★  ⸻   RECKLESSNESS: maybe a 6 or 7 overall, and a higher number during The High School Years --- but even then, i would never call laura self-destructive, is the thing. most of her most textbook reckless behavior is actually her just trying to stay alive, so when there's no need for it anymore there is, well, [largely] no need for it anymore. but she will always have hedonistic tendencies.

★  ⸻   AMBITION: 5/10. she's very driven in terms of like, doing whatever she does well, but doesn't have much ambition in the general sense (apart from wanting to do as much as she can to make things better for people, but outside of specific circumstances, that's pretty abstract). she doesn't have big dreams for herself.

★  ⸻   LOYALTY: well, it's complicated. she won't be teaching classes on it. it's hard for laura to be consistent in a lot of ways (especially when she's Experiencing The Horrors ... or just plain young) and she isn't the greatest at making sure people know how she feels. vulnerability is hard! it doesn't come naturally to her! but if she loves a person --- like, really loves them --- there's nothing she wouldn't do for them. and they're basically stuck with her for life. so... 7/10? maybe?

★  ⸻   LOVE: i want to say 10/10, but i don't know how objective that is. probably not at all. she's an incredibly loving person, but she's also very guarded from most people. she has to ration herself/her energy so she doesn't get overwhelmed and burned out. so... 8/10? 7?

★  ⸻   SENSE OF FAMILY: uh. god. it is not what it used to be. but i think, in a way, it is stronger after all that loss? like, for so long there was so much wrong in her family that laura couldn't quite put her finger on, and that caused her to pull away from everyone, just in case. finding out who she couldn't trust illuminated all the people she still COULD, and allowed her to reaffirm and strengthen those relationships, which is a big priority afterward. so it's good. it's shaky, and it's kind of hard to define, but it's good. 7/10.

★  ⸻   ATTRACTIVENESS: i don't know. she is my daughter and people are fucking weird. and they know her mainly as a 17-year-old girl (who actually pretty much looks like a 17-year-old girl!). i will say it's not really a priority for her to BE attractive, though; she cares much more about being tidy. she's pretty! i doubt anyone would disagree with that! but the magnetism she has on whatever level is mainly charisma.

★  ⸻   AGILITY: physically like, pretty bad, after Certain Events. she went from probably an 8 to about a 4. mentally... too good for her own good. probably a 9/10. she may not be my smartest character but she is very, very quick. if she WERE ambitious we would all be in trouble.

★  ⸻   SEX DRIVE: you don't need to worry about it.

How innocent is innocent?

I have played with my characters a lot in their respective universes and outside of them, but let’s break it down from best to worse on the innocence scale:

PURE INNOCENCE

1. Victoria Summer - while I don’t generally do innocent characters with major good motivations, Victoria fits that bill. She has few mistakes made along her path in life, but nothing major to actually paint her as evil. Slightly naughty? Yes. Opinionated? Yes. But those are good.

2. Jonathan King - You probably were expecting the other King here, but no, this is reserved for Jonathan. There isn't a bad bone in this boys body and while he can be stubborn at times, he doesn't do anything over the top to portrait him as evil or has tendencies towards that.

A BAD THING OR TWO

3. Angela King - The reason I am placing her here is because of the norms of her society, how she was viewed and treated. It takes a lot for her to find some peace and acceptance despite being pure sunshine. She knows how to keep her monsters at bay, so she is mild, but for her I think loneliness up to a point and feeling like she never belonged took a toll on her somewhere along the path.

4. Leila Hellebore - oddly enough despite having the ability to cause you pain, make your blood boil and used to hunt down people using a metal bat back in her Hit Witch days, Leila is fairly stable despite her demons, no pun intended. But that doesn't mean she cannot go full 180 for those she holds dear.

HAS WTF MOMENTS

5. Scarlett Tempest - she is in this one but leans more to the previous category. She is mean, self-destructive, cold and annoying to a point in which she is hurtful and causes damage. While she does loosen up later on, she still holds that edge and some WTF moments generally acting without even feeling.

6. Gareth Farr - Another one on the self-destructive list. He rarely leanrs from his own mistakes and while he is fundamentally good, he has many flaws that cover that up.

7. Jin Watanabe - I am placing him here because while he is a demon who is very particular in his ways and can cause a lot of damage, he usually prefers diplomacy above violence. But he is no stranger to it or is surprised by it later in life.

8. Talia Crane - strangely innocent at times but also extremely vicious when provoked, pilling bodies and cranking up the kill count that makes even Satan himself blush. Less moral dilemma than any character but at the same time the one who is most damaged. Manipulative, rude and highly deadly. Maybe since it's only her in this category I should call it "sits on Akira’s lap" 🤣

RICHIE ARDEN.

COMPASSION. 4/10*. Richie's general capacity for empathy is relatively low. Compassion is something he still has to make a very conscious effort for, and he doesn't often know what to do for it. I think some of the clearest moments of compassion you'll see from him are things he will do for the dying.

He does have his own little ways of showing he cares, in his own way. Making sure his boys have eaten. Relative leniency on approving leave, where he can. Insisting on at least one inspection of injuries himself, even if they were seen to by someone else. (And I don't write him in a romantic relationship or choose to ship him by default, but he does learn other forms of compassion and connection and expressing care as the relationship deepens.)

BITTERNESS. 4/10. Less bitter and more a bleak realist. The bitterness kicks in after his Arc 2, when his government betrays him and he loses his team. But it's not pervasive in his life in the sense that it colors everything? Bitter about losing his boys, and bitter about being stabbed in the back, but that does not mean that he expects as much from everyone else now.

HAPPINESS. 5/10. Honestly just a very neutral guy. Neither prone to great joy nor great sorrow.

POLITENESS. 5/10. He is aware of when it would be wise to hold his tongue, and aware of social convention and manners. It's something of a tossup as to whether or not he'll actually acknowledge and act on said awareness. He's got enough sense not to talk back to a superior, but if there's no respect there, he will absolutely be brusque and intentionally ignore things like pleasantries.

I want to say there's an element of "doesn't care enough to pry" in some of what reads as his politeness. For instance, he won't ask about scars in part because that's Not Something You Do, and in part because it's not behavior he wants to encourage (doesn't want someone thinking that's something he'll tolerate directed his way), but also he just. Doesn't care enough about the "story" to ask? And then once he gets to know someone and develops a relationship of some form with them, there's a respect for privacy he won't broach.

MORALITY. 5/10. His work, by default, has him often operating in the grey. But even before that, he never felt particularly compelled by morality. It's more a set of rules he operates by because it is easier to do so. He has lines he won't cross because of his internal moral compass, of course. But I would not call him a particularly moral man.

PRIDE. 7/10. Prideful, but I would argue in some odd ways. Not easily humiliated, even when that is solely, specifically, viciously the goal. But also not a braggart. He knows he's good at what he does. He's confident in the knowledge that he's good at what he does. But you also won't hear him willy-nilly discussing his work or his successes.

He would maybe rather die than beg, given specifically those two options. It might depend on the day.

HONESTY. 6/10. Honest with an edge, sometimes. But also inclined toward the conversational redirect to avoid answering questions or addressing topics he'd rather not. More honest professionally than personally.

BRAVERY. 10/10. Occupational hazard, bravery. Being brave and running toward the injured and the violence and destruction tend to go hand-in-hand.

RECKLESSNESS. 5/10. You would think, perhaps, that bravery and recklessness go hand-in-hand? And yet. Has he made decisions against his better judgement? Gone headfirst back into a situation with terrible odds to finish a mission, or rescue one of his own? Yes. However, one does not get to a point of leading teams by lacking good judgment and the wisdom of when to say no to ill-advised courses of action.

AMBITION. 7/10. Less personal ambition and more professional ambition and drive. The ambition of Getting Shit Done.

LOYALTY. 10/10. Loyal to a fault. Loyal to people, first, but his loyalty to his country is nothing to scoff at either. The man has literally been tortured and held onto highly classified information. He would kill for, and die for, his loyalties.

LOVE. 3/10. Love is another one of those things Richie does not have much capacity for. Not that he would not say he loves people— he does love his family, and in rare circumstances, could even come to love a romantic partner. But it is not love in the way he hears other people describe. He simply doesn't connect with people on that level. It's part of why it's so easy for him to leave his old life behind at the end of his Arc 2, going into Arc 3. Almost an, out-of-sight, out-of-mind.

(And yet, I want it on record that the two ships he does have? Love on Richie looks a lot like obsession. Love becomes a "I am not leaving first. You will have to tell me you're done with me" thing.)

SENSE OF FAMILY. 4/10*. In line with his difficulty with emotional attachments (love and the like), his sense of family is not particularly strong. He has one, certainly, and they're on good terms. But he feels no obligation to them, and rarely feels a particular pull toward them that is distinguishable from any pull he feels toward anyone else he has more than a passing relationship with. That being said, his niece is, without a doubt, the exception to the rule. He showers her with gifts, has left much of his estate to her in his will, and would do anything for her.

ATTRACTIVENESS. 8/10. I'd call him ruggedly handsome. The scars are an allure for some, and a warning off for others.

AGILITY. 8/10. He has to be, for his occupation. It's something he puts a concentrated effort into maintaining. But a fighter's agility, not a dancer or acrobat's agility. Strikes fast strikes true, strikes hard.

SEX DRIVE. 7/10. Not something he acts on so regularly after he leaves his twenties, but still a higher-than-average sex drive. Higher when he has a regular sexual partner. Lower when the work wears him thin.

Day 22: Kalamazoo to Warren Dunes

An alright ride today. I took a route that was rather out of the way, cause it spent a lot of time on bike trails. It was hot again today, for the first time in a while, but I had good shade for a decent amount of it. I took the ride a little slow, taking 3 evenly spaced, rather long breaks about every 20-25 miles.

The time on bike trails was rather pleasant, except for that the Kal-Haven trail (from Kalamazoo to South Haven) was closed for the last 15 miles, which my mapping app didn't know, so I had to reroute onto state roads. The wind wasn't too bad most of the time, even when it was a headwind.

Of my 3 stops, the only one of note was the second, where I stopped at a Culver's for lunch and spent about an hour there. I got a cheeseburger and a chocolate concrete, which were both rather good (Culver's is probably one of the only fast food places I actually like). I might actually stop by another one for lunch tomorrow, cause I'm running low on food, don't want to do a shopping run, they have food I enjoy and am slightly craving, and usually have an outdoor place to eat, so I can put my bike there and won't have to worry about watching it. I'll probably make the actual decision on the ride tomorrow.

Wow, I can't really believe that tomorrow is the last day. It's been a good trip, especially the second half, and I'm kinda relieved it's coming to an end. Part of me will miss these posts, but as I mentioned awhile back, sometimes the stress of thinking about what to write gets to me.

I spent a lot of today's ride just focusing on the riding. Normally what I do is compartmentalize it as I ride, thinking about how far I have to go, and how that can be expressed in smaller or larger terms, and then by the time I've finished thinking that way, I check how far I've traveled, and repeat the process. It's not something I'm good at describing, cause it's something that just happens, without me thinking consciously about it.

I'm staying at the Warren Dunes Campground today, and it's the first of my campgrounds which I've stayed at before. It's just how I remember it, down to being laden with mosquitoes. I've had to slap quite a few, and I'll have to make sure none get in my tent, but other than that, atmospherically, this is one of my favorite campgrounds. Despite that, it's probably one of the ones I'll spend the least time at, cause I got here somewhat late, and I expect I'll leave somewhat early tomorrow, given it will be my last day.

Design Notes

I did quite a bit of design-thinking today, mostly about Cardcasting. I think I've mentioned it before, but I'll be going into a slightly deeper dive here.

Cardcasting

Cardcasting is a card-based magic system, intended (probably) for a tabletop roleplaying game. The way magic works in this system is that spellcaster have a deck of element/mana cards, which they draw from to determine what spells they can cast. Each card has an element on it, and counts as a quantity of "1" of that type/element of mana.

There are seven elements divided up according to 2 supercategories:

Action - describes how the type of mana interacts with a substance, the categories are Creation & Destruction

Substance - describes what type of substance is being interacted with, categories are Matter, Energy, and Soul

Thus, we have the elements of "Create Matter (CM)", "Create Energy (CE)", "Create Soul (CS)", "Destroy Matter (DM)", "Destroy Energy (DE)", and "Destroy Soul (DS)". The seventh element, which does not fit into any of the categories, is "Dimensional", or "Spatial/Temporal (ST)", which deals with manipulations of space and time.

Spellcasters (the term used for anyone who uses an Element deck) cast spells by drawing a certain number of element cards from their deck, and using some number of those to cast a spell which uses the drawn type/quantity of elements. Each spell has a level, determined by how many element cards are needed to cast it.

I don't yet have a good idea of the scale of spells with regards to spell level, which largely stems from the multielemental nature of most spells. For example, take a spell that sculpts stone. It could require just CM mana, as one creates stone in a certain shape, or it could require just DM mana, to remove bits from a block of stone, which would probably be the more efficient option. However, it's probably even more efficient to cast that type of spell using both CM & DM mana, allowing for refining of the shape of the stone in more ways than just chiseling away. However, that means that the spell requires at least 1 CM card and at least 1 DM card, so it automatically must be at least a level 2 spell. As such, it is difficult to find a spell that makes sense as a level 1 spell, for it truly has to be most efficient as a single-element spell.

I do have level 0 spells, or cantrips. These are spells which are cast using a card from your deck, but the card is then returned to the deck, so all they really require is that you know how to use that type of mana. Some examples include:

Timer - A dimensional cantrip that sets a timer in your mind to notify you when a certain amount of time has passed.

Calm Self - a destroy soul cantrip that calms rampant emotions in oneself. Has no effect on magically-induced emotions.

Match - a create energy cantrip that creates a small spark for a flame where you touch. If not used on something extremely flammable (like paper), the touched object will not catch fire. Does not really have combat utility.

Another example of spell I've thought of that becomes more effective/efficient as more elements are added to cast it is a simple healing spell, used to heal a cut with a knife (just as an example). At the lowest level, it would either be a CM spell, in which case you recreate the flesh covering the wound, essentially forcibly forming a scab, or a CS spell, which would help close the wound internally and deal with the pain, but would do nothing to the appearance from outside/possible future wounds in the same spot. Combine the two, and now you have a spell that fully heals the wound and make it look good as new. Then, if you add in ST magic, you are able to simulate a speeding-up of the healing process by manipulating time, allowing for a heal that has a lower chance of becoming a vulnerable spot or getting infected, because it's as if the wound has healed naturally in a sterilized environment. And this isn't even getting into the craziness of adding DM to kill any infections that might already be there, CE to help the bloodflow through the wound, etc. I'm starting to feel like this system may be too open-ended.

I also want to talk a little bit about spellcasters getting stronger in Cardcasting. I'll note that I don't actually know the mechanics of how Spellcasters become stronger, just that if they were to become stronger, these are things that would chnage. Spellcasters have either 3 or 4 axes upon which they can get stronger, depending on how you look at it, and each of those has its own downsides.

Learn more spells - the simplest way for a spellcaster to become stronger is to learn more spells. This one doesn't actually have much of a downside, but it doesn't really increase the strength of a spellcaster, just their versatility. Learning higher level spells is a different point.

Cast spells faster - when a spellcaster casts a spell, they spend a certain amount of time drawing a certain number of cards. If they are able to draw more cards faster, they will be able to cast higher level spells at a rate closer to how they used to be able to cast lower level spells, making them stronger. This has the downside of causing a spellcaster to run through their deck more quickly, so they can't cast as many spells in succession before needing to rest.

Have a larger pool of mana - a spellcaster's pool of mana determines how many spells they can cast before needing to rest, and is essentially the same as the size of their deck. If a spellcaster is able to add more cards to their deck, they will be able to cast more spells between breaks. However, this will decrease the consistency of their deck, as with a larger deck you are less likely to draw the exact element you need.

Versatility of mana - this is the axis that might not actually be considered its own upside. Spellcaster can learn how to harness more elements, which might allow them more versatility in the spells they can cast, but similarly to the last point, it would also greatly diminish the consistency of their deck.

Tagged by @garglyswoof and @purplesigebert. I honestly don’t rewatch films as much nowadays, since I just watch a LOT of films in general and don’t have any remaining time to rewatch stuff as well. But I do have a load of comfort movies I think, so here we go.

Top 10 Comfort Movies (in no particular order)

1. Ever After (1998) Because Gabby made an excellent point, that movie is amazing, it’s pretty historically accurate and has some good moral life lessons thrown in. Cinderella movies, just in general, are a comfort movie for me, and I went through a phase when I was younger of just watching every variation ever made (even the shitty versions, much to my horror).

2. A Cinderella Story (2004) Again, it’s a cinderella movie, and an iconic one at that. I’m a secret romantic at heart.

3. Deathnote (2017) Yes I realise this was generally hated by all. But this was my first introduction to Death Note (I binge watched the anime series straight after don’t worry) and whatever your grievances for this movie, William Dafoe is brilliant at whatever he does, and playing Ryuk is no different. For a live action adaptation, I thought the design of Ryuk was pretty spot on and beautifully terrifying, and although the storyline crosses over into cheesy American, it’s easy to watch. Which is why it ended up as a comfort movie for me while I was taking my GCSEs - I often put it on in the background while working on my art coursework.

4. The Day After Tomorrow (2004) Here’s the thing guys - disaster movies are my comfort movies. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the bitter, Gen-Z in me, but I enjoy watching the world descend into chaos and destruction. They’re easy to watch, the good guys often prevail against the ruthless attack of nature herself in the end, and idk, I like seeing a little death, a little fire. I’m just made different. Sometimes the shittier the disaster movie the better, so I’m talking things like Greenland (2020), Geostorm (2017) etc. That being said, zombie movies also fall into this category, just love all kinds.

5. White House Down (2013) Along the similar vein as disaster movies, I love the-government-is-under-attack movies, so the Olympus Has Fallen (2013) trilogy too. Just something about very American, cheesy action movies that are just easy to watch, require no brain power, and are just a fun ride.

6. Don’t Look Up (2021) Did I mention disaster movies are my jam? This one is pretty political, but I’m British, so I think I also enjoyed it so much because I can just sit to the side, eating my popcorn, and watch as the shitshow enfolds like the chaos gremlin I am, with no true existential crisis about how doomed my country is. 

7. Inglorious Basterds (2009) Quentin Tarantino is an amazing filmmaker on a whole, and although gory, brutal and - let’s face it - a little crazy, his movies are always a blast to watch. And you get to see the characters kill a load of Nazis, inlcuding Hitler, so it’s a win win.

8. Love Actually (2003) Felt obligated to put another rom-com on here because I can be a normal person and watch rom-coms for comfort (I promise). It’s also a christmas movie, so like will only watch it around December, but eh, still counts.

9. The Impossible (2012) Another disaster movie, but it’s a true story this time, and I’ve re-watched this one a lot. It’s sad and angsty yes, but there’s something hopeful about the family reuniting after such a traumatic event, and how humanity comes together in crisis to help each other.

10. The Batman (2022) Maybe it’s become a comfort movie because I’ve rewatched it so many times for my dissertation but I really love this film, and I can’t get enough of it. I just love every aspect about it. And will get a craving where I’m like ‘I need to watch The Batman again’. And so I do.

Lol and that’s it. I will say I tend to watch Friends now if I want something on in the background, or just something to cheer me up. That’s my all-time piece of comfort media I tend to watch. Otherwise, these also work. And I love them all.

Lucas pulls on the tie that is loosened around Eliott’s neck and wraps the silken fabric around his fingers. He straddles the taller brunette, hovering over his thick thighs, refusing to sit down because from this position he gets to look down at the other. The view is nice. Lucas smiles, leaning close enough to feel Eliott’s breath on his lips, close enough to count the individual lashes that frame stormy eyes.

Does Freedom of Speech have Boundaries?

True freedom can never be experienced until one comes to know the Lord Jesus Christ, as only through Him can we truly be free. True freedom cannot be divorced from truth and truth can only be defined by the Bible. In the last blog, I talked about the only way we can live an overcoming life is to line up our lives with the standards and commandments of the Bible. God did not give us commandments to punish us or deny us any good thing. He gave us commandments so that by following them we could live blessed lives on this earth. Since He created man and the earth, He also established the rules for living. If we follow those rules we are blessed, but if we disobey and rebel against His rules, we will fall under a curse. God gave the man a choice. We can choose to obey Him and be blessed or disobey and be destroyed. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” and this means we can never know the truth unless we know Him and we can never be free unless we know Him.“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19). “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

God gives every person free will to choose to follow Him or choose to disobey and suffer the consequences in this life, and in the life to come, doing evil and rejecting Christ will cause that person to go to a permanent place known as hell. We can choose our destination – believe in Christ and follow Him to heaven or reject Him and follow the devil and go to hell.

Penalties Should Be Imposed for Criminal Acts

Do we have the freedom to commit criminal acts? Yes, but if we do, then we also should face the penalties imposed for committing those evil deeds. We are free to choose to do evil, but not free from the consequences of our choices. The Bible outlines many principles for the good of society as a whole; keeping them, brings blessing and order to society. The practice of evil brings destruction. If any man’s freedom imposes harm on another, then it is not the freedom that our founding fathers intended to extend to the people. If any man’s use of his freedom of speech perverts the minds of our children, then we have the right to rise and say that is not the kind of speech that we will tolerate.

Pornography – A Perversion of Free Speech

I just read a review of an evil book and movie entitled, Fifty Shades of Grey. No Christian should see this movie, as it demonstrates perverted sex on the screen (sadomasochistic bondage sex). This is the same as pornography. As Christians, we are called to live holy and pure lives and we should never partake in movies or depraved sexual acts. The Bible tells us to live a separate life from the evils of this world.“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Pornography should never be protected under the first amendment as freedom of speech because it is an evil that is doing great harm to our society. Among the many evil fruits of this sin are broken marriages, the spread of sexual diseases, and the extreme sexual perversions that incite sexual predators to rape and kill women and children. The devil is furnishing pornographers with an escape from their evil deeds by using the first amendment as their legal way to get by with what they are doing. This is a perversion of freedom of speech. Certain religious deeds fall under this same thing. Freedom of religion gives us the right to worship as we are led by God, but if any religious deeds harm or destroy people, they should not be protected under the Constitution. Acts of terrorism, in the name of God, fall in this same category. Biblical principles and guidelines influenced the forming of our Constitution; those same guidelines should interpret our Constitution at the judicial level. Should Christian Morals Influence Public Life?

Many Americans have believed the lie that we should not allow those who practice Christian religious morals to impose those good principles on the public. What is wrong with influencing the public with good? True Biblical standards will always create an environment for the good of all, while wicked standards will allow evil to overcome good. If Christian and Biblical moral practices are not incorporated into our national life, evil men will impose upon us their wicked interpretation of “freedom” i.e., the right to do evil in the name of freedom.

Biblical Definition of Freedom

If our definition of freedom is not based on the Biblical definition, then it is not true freedom. Jesus said that the truth would set us free. Since Jesus Himself is The Truth, His words to us will free us. Bondage is the alternative to freedom. The devil brings men into bondage by tempting them to sin, being careful not to tell them that the wages of sin are death. Bondage from sin comes in many forms–addictions, stress, fear, diseases, unforgiveness, torment, etc. The only way to escape from bondage is to come to Jesus and repent of our sins and find His love and forgiveness. He then will disciple us and teach us His Word and His ways so that we will be set free from every bondage that sin brings.“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed in him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We are Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house forever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:31-36).
