Mexilhões de água doce estão em "perigo crítico", alerta estudo

Um estudo que envolveu investigadores de várias instituições científicas nacionais alertou para o "perigo crítico" em que se encontram os mexilhões de água doce em Portugal, um grupo de bivalves com mais de 900 espécies "altamente ameaçado globalmente".

Liderado pelo investigador Manuel Lopes Lima, do Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos (BIOPOLIS-CIBIO), da Universidade do Porto, e da Estação Biológica de Mértola, o trabalho foi realizado em colaboração com membros de outros cinco centros de investigação (CBMA, CIMO, CIIMAR, CITAB e MARE), representando seis instituições académicas portuguesas -- Politécnico de Bragança e universidades do Porto, do Minho, de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, de Lisboa e de Évora.

Os mexilhões de água doce, um grupo de bivalves com mais de 900 espécies que podem ser encontradas em rios e lagos de todos os continentes, onde eram abundantes, desempenham um papel importante nos ecossistemas, melhorando a qualidade da água e do substrato, e fornecendo habitat fundamental para outras espécies.

Em Portugal não existiam até agora dados sobre as tendências populacionais destes animais, mas através de um levantamento minucioso das populações de mexilhões de água doce em 132 locais, abrangendo 15 bacias hidrográficas distintas, verificou-se que os dados são "dramáticos e extremamente preocupantes".

O estudo revela "um declínio generalizado de 60% no número de locais e uma redução impressionante de 67% na abundância total de mexilhões de água doce em Portugal ao longo das últimas duas décadas".

Estes resultados estão em linha com os observados no decorrer do projeto EdgeOmics, financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, cujo objetivo é avaliar e prever o impacto resultante das alterações climáticas nestes mexilhões.

Segundo Manuel Lopes Lima, "todas as espécies de mexilhões de água doce estão em declínio rápido e em risco de extinção em Portugal, sendo que esta informação foi já inclu��da na produção do recente Livro Vermelho dos Invertebrados de Portugal, onde todas as espécies se encontram como ameaçadas e protegidas".

Os mexilhões de água doce têm geralmente uma vida longa e são "altamente sensíveis" a perturbações do habitat, tornando-as bons indicadores da integridade ecológica dos ecossistemas de água doce.

A investigação aponta como principais causas dos declínios relatados o aumento de secas prolongadas, a alteração de habitat ribeirinho por barragens e a introdução de espécies exóticas, tais como a amêijoa asiática.

De acordo com os investigadores, as espécies de mexilhões de água doce protegidas na União Europeia são "inadequadamente monitorizadas".

"Mesmo as espécies classificadas como comuns deveriam receber mais atenção, pois poderão estar impropriamente avaliadas, tal como se mostrou no presente estudo. Esta questão é particularmente alarmante na região do Mediterrâneo, onde o endemismo das espécies é elevado e os habitats de água doce severamente afetados pela escassez de água", salientam.

Para reverter as "alarmantes tendências populacionais em declínio", o estudo enfatiza "a necessidade urgente de uma gestão mais eficiente da água, da implementação de restrições de irrigação em áreas de biodiversidade vitais, da mitigação de alterações hidrológicas e da restauração da conectividade perdida dos habitats aquáticos devido a anteriores alterações físicas, tais como barragens e açudes".

Por outro lado, sublinham os autores do estudo, "para prevenir a extinção das espécies mais criticamente ameaçadas, incluindo Margaritifera margaritifera, Potomida littoralis e Unio tumidiformis, cujas populações caíram para níveis quase residuais, é imperativo agir com ações de conservação urgentes tais como o estabelecimento de programas de reprodução em cativeiro, proteção estrita das populações restantes e restauração de habitats em larga escala".

Este trabalho foi recentemente publicado na revista Biological Conservation.
