Monday, March 24: Ozzy Osbourne, "Bloodbath in Paradise"
R.I.P. Randy Castillo (1950-2002)
No Rest for the Wicked was retroactively labeled one of Ozzy Osbourne’s best solo albums, largely because it was his first with Zakk Wylde.  But upon release in 1988 it was his lowest seller, stalling at Gold and finding the Ozzman playing mostly smaller venues after almost a decade filling arenas.  But for all its retrospective acclaim, No Rest for the Wicked was an album of its moment, as was every Ozzy album: “Bloodbath in Paradise” may have had a little more teeth in its mix and a fair amount of Zakk’s squealing, but it was still overly slick and corporate.  A lot of that had to do with Roy Thomas Baker and Keith Olsen following the assignment and Ozzy and Sharon’s instincts generally leaning towards the safe, though Bob Daisley’s lyrics about the Manson murders were also the sort of boilerplate “evil” and “scary” content that fit with the Ozzy image at the time.  All of that said, “Bloodbath in Paradise” did a good job of showcasing the chemistry of this lineup: Zakk and Randy Castillo were immediately simpatico, while Daisley remained a steady hand on bass, and Ozzy himself naturally vibed with this crew, so much so that he generally kept all of them around for the next album.

The Bunch
THE BUNCH @ 1967 (photo by Jeff Rothner) It was late October 1964 when a young beat band from Christchurch, England, returned to the Winter Gardens in neighbouring Bournemouth in the hope of going three better in the ‘Big Beat and Vocal’ contest. Eight months prior, as Dave and The Concordes, they had come fourth in the inaugural competition. Now though, they entered as a slimmed-down quartet,…

Epic Records/ CBS Records "Country's Best" inner sleeve with newspaper styled marketing format on reverse. Printed on semigloss paper. Found within 1981 George Jones and Tammy Wynette "Encore" compilation album, catalog number FE 37348 (I think). Johnny Paycheck image font resembles font used on some Impulse! label Jazz albums.
