LOTFTOBER, DAY 6 : Childhood

Here, take some headcanons!

RALPH

Ralph has severe ADHD and, therefore, was never a prefect at his school

He also has Dyslexia (halfbloooddd /jk)

Ralph’s an only child, and doesn’t really ‘get’ sibling bonds

Absolute math nerd; he’s never gotten an C or lower

When he was younger, he begged his dad to read him stories, and would constantly ask ‘what word is that’ and ‘how do you say that’ in the middle of the story

His dad would sometimes sing him songs before he went to bed

Whenever he had a nightmare, he’d go wake up his parents and they’d read him more books while he played with his dog (golden retriever named Juno)

Definitely lived in the country and DEFINITELY a horse boy

Collected miniature glass horse statues, and he keeps them all on a shelf

• He used to runaway and sit in nature whenever he couldn’t handle all of the pressure he felt from teachers nagging about his Dyslexia

JACK

Jack has SEBD and a little Autism

He’s also allergic to cats, which is troublesome, because Simon loves to pet the neighborhood strays

Maurice + Jack are troublemakers

He stole things that he found cool when he was little

He figured out he was Trans when he was around 10-11, so it wasn’t too much of a shock for friends

His family constantly struggled though, and always used “she/her” pronouns (on accident or on purpose) at family dinners

Which confused his cousins, Sam’nEric (not my original headcanon)

ROGER

Roger’s dad is a Detective; his mom died in childbirth

He grew up on his grandparents Bee Farm

Roger always hung out with the Bees, and afterwards he always smelled like Lavender

“Roger.”

“Yes Merridew.”

“Do you use perfume?”

He always had his nose stuck in mystery/suspense books

Of the many upon his shelves, Sherlock Holmes and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde are his favorites

Roger has ASPD, and Simon was like a life vest for him

Simon’s Autistic

He loves Dinosaurs, Space, and Animals; he will yap about all of them

He would trade any new Dinosaur facts he learned for his grandmother’s bird facts

He loves doing crafts; most definitely made friendship bracelets for the Choir

He was recommended by his school for the Church Choir, that’s how he met Jack and all them

He practically lives in his head

That’s one thing Roger [liked] thought was interesting about him

MAURICE

Maurice was a problem child

In so many ways

Being part of a huge family, his parents were always working

They spent time with all his older siblings until there was a new baby on the way, then they were all forgotten

Once you were born you were always sent to the neighbors next door, or, if you’re lucky, your grandparents

That’s how Maurice was raised, and despite everything, he loved it

He grew up with his grandparents and Bill’s parents, both who urged his teetering between genders

He even dyes his hair! First ginger-ish, then ombré blonde (he has black hair)

They also quickly found out that Maurice isn’t like his siblings

He has Selective Mutism + ADHD—and an extra thumb—as well as a keen mind that he sets on getting attention from his parents

Whether that be getting “stuck” in a closet, using the helium of a balloon to raise his voice, or getting in one too many fights, he’s tried everything

Did it ever work? Yes. Did he get the response he wanted? No.

Maurice had a wild home life, and all those problems followed him throughout his life

Thus dubbed, a problem child

BILL

Bill’s parents used that cheese trick on him when he was young

The one where you throw a piece of cheese on your kid’s head when they’re crying, and they magically stop

It was a little after he was born; his mom was resting up and his dad was taking care of him

He was crying so much that his dad took a piece of cheese off his mom’s food tray and put it on his head

They shared this information with Maurice’s parents, too, and now it’s a joke between the two boys

Bill’s colorblind, so if you look at any of his childhood drawings, you may be a little confused

He’s embarrassed by them, and vowed never to draw again

He actually still does, he just never colors it in

Bill grew up loving trains and planes

He heard stories of the Night Witches, and heard about America and their Steam Trains

He just loved that kind of thing

P.S. his favorite book is the Runaway Bunny

SAM’NERIC

Sam’nEric could communicate as babies when they were apart

I mean that in one room, Sam would go “AH!!” and Eric would reply from another room going “EHHH!!”

They have that twin telepathy dynamic where some people actually believe it

In reality, they just know each other really well

Eric: “*staring at Sam*”

Sam: “No we can’t go to the fair!”

Eric loves the fair, it’s one of his favorite childhood memories

The twins are kind of polar opposites: Sam loves the country, Eric loves the city; Sam loves legends, and Eric would rather have all the facts

Sam used to tell scary stories to the Choir when they were all really young, but he was quickly banned from doing so because Eric would always rush in the middle of the nightly service crying and screaming about whatever creepy thing Sam made up that night

The twins loved doing community service; it’s a big thing for them as their mom basically raised them around the idea

PIGGY

Piggy constantly helped out in his Auntie’s Candy Shop

Aside from eating them, I mean

He would help sell them and pitch ideas for new flavors, shapes, and themes!

He’d also help decorate during the holidays

Decorating is how Piggy calms down, and even since he started doing it when he was young, it became a tradition

His dad was murdered and when his mom couldn’t handle him and her grief, she handed him off

He always tries to follow rules, scared that whoever came after his dad will come after him next

Piggy had a blue teddy bear that he used to carry around all the time

He still has it, it just stays on his bed all day

He also used to have a dog!

Well, it's hard to define who specifically is Dior's direct target market. After all, Dior has been through so many different fashion changes throughout its history. Some consumers with old money prefer and know Dior under Christian Dior, with Elegant and classy haute couture dresses and accessories.

Some other people prefer Dior's chaotic and creative era under John Galliano. In contrast to vintage Dior, this era used bright, vibrant colors, vulgar and extreme designs, and more openly sexual campaigns with new models.

And there are more younger consumers who prefer Dior's girly and hyper-feminine look.

First, to analyze who Dior's primary target market is, we have to take into consideration factors such as:

Regional Culture - Is it popular in their region?

Demographics - What is their sex, age, and race?

Psychographics - What ethics do they follow?

Generational Cohort - Does their generation have purchasing power?

Ch.1- p.g 12 - Lascaux Caves, southwest France, c. 15,000 BCE

“The earliest examples of images that suggest animated movement are found in prehistoric paintings, such as the ones in Lascaux caves in France. These ancient images which include horses and other animals in sequences of slightly altered positions, may indicate that even the earliest humans wanted to set their images in motion.”

Ch. 1 - p.g. 15 - Shadow Animation, fifteenth century

The casting of shadows onto a wall using hands or other objects has occurred worldwide since the earliest years of humanity. The first reference that alludes to magic lanterns was in the fifteenth century by Italian engineer and physician Giovanni Fontana. 

Ch. 1 - p.g 13/14 - Magic-Lantern Shows, seventeenth century

Magic-Lanterns were the forerunners to slide projectors that came about in the seventeenth century and served various uses from that point onwards. They worked by pushing a series of hand-painted (or photographic) glass slides into a beam of light which would project the image out.

Ch. 1 - p.g 15 - Chromatrope and Chreutoscope

By the nineteenth century the equipment had and advanced and most acts now incorporated other equipment including a chromatrope which used two, overlapping, colourful, glass plates which where lit with the projection lamp and then spun with a hand crank to create a light show.                                             The chreutoscope held six images which were projected one after the other to create very simple animated movement.

Ch. 1 - p.g 15/16 - Phantasmagoria, eighteenth century

Ghost stories (phantasmagoria) were the most popular Magic-Lantern shows in which portable lanterns were hidden behind a translucent screen on which frightening images were projected. Belgian scientist and artist Etienne Gaspard Robertson is best known for this genre and coined his own term Fantasmagorie

Ch. 1 - p.g 16 - Precursor to Cinema, eighteenth century

Advancements and increasing popularity behind Magic Lanterns made people more familiar with experiencing image screenings which would path the way to the advent of Cinema.

Ch. 1 - p.g 17 - Motion Devices, nineteenth century

Medical advancements throughout the century lead to new findings about how the human body worked. As a means of demonstrating these new discoveries motion devices were created such as thaumatropes, zoetropes and phenakistoscopes. Overtime these inventions found their way into the general public and became forms of entertainment, now they are antiques and collectors items. The Flipbook however which was invented by British printer John Linnett in 1868 remains to be popular and went on to be the core function of drawn animation.

Ch.1 - p.g 18/19 - Automata, eighteenth century

The late eighteenth century saw the introduction of machine manufacturing and automation. It was this same innovation that lead to automata for entertainment and art which would be the early foreshadowing of stop-motion animation. Figures animal or human in nature imitated movement giving one of the earliest impressions of artificial life.

Ch. 16 - The Emergence of Electronic Games

People have always played games. Though primitive and accessible traditionally we have an innate curiosity to try new things, learn and improve. The first computer game historically was made in 1958 in a US-Government-owned laboratory. It was expensive and required massive machines to be run. “Tennis for Two” developed by Willie Higginbotham. MIT created their own game “Spacewar”, a two-player game in which opposing spaceships tried to down one another.

Didn’t become widely accessible until the 70′s when Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney began developing video games for arcade cabinets. “Computer Space” (Spacewar) was completed in 1971, didn’t sell well. Left and formed Atari in 1972 and released ”Pong” a year later. Began the golden age of arcade games.

Don Bluth took an interest in Arcade games and saw the potential for Disney-esque studio animation and narrative. He created two arcade games Dragon’s Quest (1983) and Space Ace (1984) which were stylistically unique and innovative for the time. Used laserdisc for multiple narratives. Furthered videogames.

1972 saw the release of the first home console (Magnavox Odyssey) by Ralph Baer “Father of the video game”. It used television monitors to display the graphics and used cartridges to hold game information.

Further technological advances went hand in hand with advancements in the video game industry. With more processing power came better visuals and audio. With more peripherals came more complex and intuitive gameplay. The major game companies (Nintendo, Sega, Sony) went into competition with each driving the other to advance the technology culminating in 3D animation within the industry.

Ch. 21 - Computer-Generated Animation in Features

By the 1980′s feature films had moved away from art and towards profitability. They were made to be as lucrative as possible. Blockbusters were full of spectacle but lacked complex narrative so they could sell the concept with a sentence or two. This was helped immensely by the Special effects industry creating believable practical effects such as explosions, costumes, animatronics...etc.

Though the industry was aware of the potential for Computer generated imagery there wasn’t the know-how to integrate it into films. It was still far to complex and inaccessible for most. However due to Apples desire to make Computing part of day to day lives they had begun distributing their hardware to schools in hopes of creating customers for life. The effect of this was young people were becoming more accustomed to the technology and more adept at using it. 

John Lasseter was inspired by Tron to explore the possibilities of 3D animation. Contacted MAGI and worked on a project together. Looked into developing “Brave Little Toaster” into a CGI Film, was fired from Disney for not consulting. Got a job at Lucas Film as part of a Graphics Group working towards 3D Animation Software. Was bought out by Steve Jobs and turned into Pixar. Began developing character animation.
