𝐑𝐄-𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆… 𝐌𝐘 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑, 𝐄𝐃𝐃𝐈𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐑

❝ Eddie Baker’s first encounter with a criminal was indirect. He was nine years old, and had come home from school eager to show his parents the math test he had aced, only to find his mother sobbing at the kitchen table and be told that his aunt had been killed by a mugger who had attempted to steal her purse. Eddie had never been that close to his aunt - she loved her sister, his mother, but had never really liked kids - but seeing his mother so broken because of something someone else had done had ignited a fire inside of him, a desire to one day get a job that would help make people who would do such horrible things pay for what they had done.

As Eddie grew older and his home life grew worse, that fire inside of him had steadily flared brighter and brighter. As his mother spiralled deeper and deeper into her grief over her lost sister, turning to alcohol to numb her pain, and his father had completely burned himself out trying to take care of two people at once and earn enough money to pay the bills, the young boy swore to himself that even if he couldn’t make the man who’d killed his aunt and caused all this misery (who’d never been caught by the police since the only witness to the crime was dead) pay for what he’d done, he would one day spend his entire life putting away anyone else who would do anything similar.

Eventually, Eddie fulfilled his promise to himself, getting a job at the FBI and working his way into a good position in the Critical Incident Response Group. He thrived in this job, treating every single case like it was the most important one he would ever work and revelling in the fact that he got to send some of his country’s worst off to prison where they belonged. He’d never exactly meant to make work his whole life, but he’d never really had any friends and his only hobby was tending to the many plants in his apartment - there had never really been a chance for him to have anyone in his life.

Until Eddie is required to correspond with the Behavioural Analysis Unit for a case, and quickly makes friends with the crazy, chaotic found family that is this team. Though Eddie likes his position in the FBI too much to even consider transferring to the BAU, he genuinely appreciates and cares about every member of that team, relishing his friendships with all of them for bringing some genuine happiness into his work-centred life.

And if he has started to have feelings for Aaron Hotchner, the stoic and courageous leader of the BAU team… well, Hotch is married with a kid and will never return Eddie’s feelings, but that’s fine. Eddie can endure this stupid little crush until it goes away, can’t he? ❞

Blue Bloods 8x20, at least the Jamko bits

WE MUST TALK ABOUT THIS. BIG SPOILERS BELOW.

@ontherockswithsalt, @fosterfinn, @duchesscupcake01 and the usual crew, feel free to weigh in. This isn’t an episode ramble but a WHAT JUST HAPPENED HERE with Jamie and Eddie and Frank and the Sergeant’s exam? We’re supposed to be gearing up for May Sweeps Week, not Jamie’s Slow Downward Spiral Continues.

Frank’s speech about one’s path depending on the choices we make, and not upon predestination is classic Frank. Jamie is taking it all in. Is he possibly flashing back to the old question of soulmates? That maybe it’s possible to have your soulmate right in front of you, but you have to actually acknowledge them and decide to declare and invest in the relationship. Just as Frank didn’t count on any of his sons becoming cops, but invested time and training in them and showed them what that possibility might look like and feel like? Or is Jamie just hoping that the old man lays off on the career pep talk this once?

What on earth just came over Eddie, walking into Frank’s office with the shaky salute and deer-in-headlights look? She’s been to the One PP. She knows Frank. Wait. Okay. She’s unwittingly ended up in the lion’s mouth, and found herself on the 14th floor due to Baker’s sharp eyes spotting her on the visitor’s list, as she had arrived planning to see her friend. Okay, yes. It would be jarring to suddenly find yourself in the Commissioner’s office instead.

Frank being all friendly and asking after her recovery was kind. There’s some nice defining of boundaries between Beat Cop and Commissioner, and Worried Dad to Son’s Best Friend, and then…oh, Eddie. What just happened to that lovely, genuine speech about guarding your partner’s confidences? She does have an instinct for leaping in with both feet in such a way that works out for the best, so I can only hope...I can see she’d be an awkward spot if her application came back as having been coded to Jamie personally, somehow. But I also think she can’t understand why Jamie doesn’t seem to want to make the best use of himself, either, and she knows darn well that Frank will push Jamie to explain himself.

I always did like Jamie’s apartment. He’s got more plants now, and nicer lighting.

Wait wait wait…so Jamie’s “decision” to remain as a beat cop for all this time is his LITTLE REBELLION against the Reagan tendency towards hyperachievement? I mean, that is some high level post-Harvard burnout and deeply rooted self-diminishing, just to stand out as an individual among the clan. I mean, sure, his: “I love my job and I’m good at it” makes sense but...really? What happened to the guy who was chomping at the bit to move ahead?

“Of whom much is given, much is expected.” Indeed. So much for Frank trying to keep his oars out of the water. But his youngest always did have a maddening way of thinking he knew best, just because he could think his way around and through things. And Will is nailing this scene, in a soft, almost sad way, like he’s got a deep handle on how it fits with his sense of Jamie, even if he doesn’t like what it says about Jamie. Because clearly Jamie hasn’t considered that he’s withholding his talent and potential usefulness from the NYPD itself, the organization he insists he loves. If he’s in a strop about being a good Reagan, he’s taking his energy away from being a good cop.

We’ve been talking lately about Jamie’s past traumas and how likely it is that he’s been not-dealing with PTSD, or rather, dealing with it by being the most reliable, drama-free member of the family that doesn’t need any help from anyone. I wonder. Eddie is still seeing Bouncy Barry, as far as we know. Has Jamie lost his best buddy and confidant as well as the love of his life, and is he just trying to find any little thing he can control, even in a negative way?

So he’s been helping Eddie study for the test. On the one hand, of course he’d help her. No question. Eddie has more than earned her chance to move up, and he’d have her back. She’d help him, too. On the other hand, he’s still making a public show (read: having a snit) of pushing back against his family, especially Frank. On the other other hand, though, that means Jamie’s also getting a good grounding in the study materials, which we know he’s already gone through before. YEARS before. He said back then that he promised himself no more tests. Did Harvard really do that much of a job on his head? Do I need to pull studies on Gifted Children and their various psychological stumbling blocks as adults, to make sense of this?

And also: cops do not neglect to return calls and texts, especially from family and fellow cops. Just not. Ever. Even if it took Jamie ages to get from Eddie's to Frank's, he'd have called to say he would be late, even if it meant pulling over.

(And on the other other other hand: Jamie missed church to study with Eddie? Or he went to early Mass alone, and then went to Eddie’s, and got sidetracked? By what, Eddie clocking him over the head with the study guide? Was she staring at him pointedly the entire time, just daring him to SAY SOMETHING SUBSTANTIAL for once?)

Or Jamie could have just been in a massive hissy fit still, and lied about being at Eddie's when he really just didn't want to come to dinner, but I doubt it.

It’s worth noting that this is all character retrofitting, anyhow. As viewers, we know that Jamie and Eddie have stayed as uniform beat cops for so long because that gives us access to the stories of their street-level daily shifts, and their character arcs as new-recruits-to-seasoned-cops. They’ve been the “everyman” characters that get used for exposition, first Jamie and then Eddie, and now, hopefully, Nicky. Trying to make any sense of Jamie’s reluctance beyond that may indeed be futile.

This has the feel of a “To Be Continued” episode without the title slide.

Ranking the 2018 NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year candidates

Is there anyone who could challenge Saquon Barkley for Offensive Rookie of the Year?

The dust has settled on the 2018 NFL Draft, but it’s never too early to start thinking about the impact the rookies will have on their new teams. And for a couple players, the 2018 season will end with Rookie of the Year honors.

It’s not too difficult to narrow the list of rookies down to a handful of candidates who have the best shot at winning the awards.

For one, first-round picks have the best shot by a mile.

Since 1989, the only players taken outside the first round to win Defensive Rookie of the Year were linebackers DeMeco Ryans and Kendrell Bell, who were picked No. 33 and No. 39 overall, respectively.

Offensive players not taken in the first round have a little better chance with Alvin Kamara, Dak Prescott, Eddie Lacy winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in three of the last five years. Prior to that was a streak of nine consecutive first-round winners.

There’s also positions.

Quarterback, running back and wide receiver are the only three positions to ever win on offense. Duh. Every spot on defense has a good shot except safety — a position that hasn’t won since 1990 — because few are able to rack up the stats to deserve it.

So with those clues in mind, here’s 10 players with a good shot at making a big enough impact to get Rookie of the Year honors for the 2018 season:

Offensive Rookie of the Year candidates

1. Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants: This is the easy one. Aside from his physical skills that make him an obvious choice, he’ll probably be among the league leaders in offensive touches. The Giants are going to lean on their investment in a big way, and he has the ability to turn that into a lot of touchdowns in 2018.

2. Rashaad Penny, RB, Seattle Seahawks: He was a surprising pick for the Seahawks, but he’s the kind of big, powerful running back that Seattle likes. In 2017, Russell Wilson led the team in rushing yards while five running backs each had between 45 and 70 carries. None of them cracked 250 yards. Penny is built to be a workhorse for the Seahawks and could get the amount of touches that Marshawn Lynch used to get in Seattle.

3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Cleveland Browns: The caveat for Mayfield and every other quarterback in the rookie class is that it’ll be difficult to see the field much in 2018. Mayfield will be behind Tyrod Taylor at first, but if he takes over, he could be pretty well set up for success.

4. Ronald Jones, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: He’s the only player outside the first round on this list, but Jones stands to see a lot of carries in 2018. Doug Martin led the Buccaneers in that category last season, but averaged just 2.9 yards per carry and was cut after the season ended.

5. DJ Moore, WR, Carolina Panthers: Just two receivers were picked in the first round: Moore and Calvin Ridley. While Ridley will share targets with Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu in Atlanta, D.J. Moore is set to be a more featured part of the Panthers offense. Devin Funchess and Torrey Smith are the top two receivers in Carolina, so it’s not difficult to envision a scenario where Moore sees a lot of passes from Cam Newton in 2018.

Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates

1. Roquan Smith, LB, Chicago Bears: A good place to start is to watch Smith’s dominant finish to the Rose Bowl in January. It showed everything he can bring to the NFL. And while he’s a little undersized for a middle linebacker at 6’1, 236 pounds, Smith is ready to make an impact right away for the Bears.

2. Bradley Chubb, DE, Denver Broncos: The consensus top pass rusher of the draft class landed on a defense that already has Von Miller. Chubb will probably need to contribute as a rotational rusher with Shaquil Barrett, Shane Ray and DeMarcus Walker among the other players on the roster. But with Miller absorbing attention, it could quickly become a dangerous 1-2 punch for Denver.

3. Denzel Ward, CB, Cleveland Browns: This was another somewhat surprising pick with Chubb still on the board, but it’ll be worth it if Ward is the man-to-man cornerback the Browns think he is. He’ll likely need to rack up some interceptions to win the award, but another Ohio State product, Marshon Lattimore, was Defensive Rookie of the Year with just five interceptions last year.

4. Rashaan Evans, LB, Tennessee Titans: Taking an Alabama linebacker is usually a good idea. Evans will be an instant starter in the middle of a defense that was No. 13 in yards allowed. It has a pair of pass rushers in Brian Orakpo and Derrick Morgan, and it has a secondary with Kevin Byard, Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan and Adoree Jackson. With that much talent around him, Evans should be free to shine.

5. Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Dallas Cowboys: The player who the Cowboys believe is “Brian Urlacher 2.0” will be an immediate starter in Dallas. In a Rod Marinelli defense, linebackers are often free to rack up big stats and Vander Esch is versatile to do a little bit of everything.

Edward Peter Baker, Jr. was born April 30th, 1970, to Leslie and Edward Baker, Sr. Born and raised in Quantico, Virginia, home of the famous FBI Academy, Eddie grew up surrounded by people who wanted to join the Bureau in order to keep the United States’ civilians safe, but his desire to be one of those people would not emerge until later in his life.

When Eddie was nine years old, he finally got a perfect score on one of his math tests after struggling with the subject for months. Ecstatic that his studying had paid off, he dashed home after school, eager to show his parents what he had accomplished. However, he was greeted with the sight of his mother bent over the kitchen table, sobbing heavily and clearly distraught. When a worried Eddie asked what was wrong, his father, who was also struggling to hold back tears, told him that his aunt, his mother’s older sister Molly, had been murdered by a robber who had attempted to steal her purse.

Over the years after his aunt’s death, Eddie’s parents both began to struggle in their own ways. Leslie Baker turned to alcohol to numb the pain of her sister’s death and was intoxicated for much of Eddie’s older childhood, and the senior Edward completely burned himself out trying to work hard enough to support three people at once, eventually dying of a heart attack when Eddie was eighteen. Leslie’s drinking got even worse after that, and Eddie was forced to put off going to college to take care of her, even though he had been offered several scholarships.

When Eddie was twenty-two, Leslie finally succumbed to her alcoholism, dying of liver failure in a local hospital as her son tightly clutched her hand and begged his mother to stay with him. After her death, the desire Eddie had been nursing since his aunt’s murder, to capture and put away criminals who could ruin lives like the mugger who had ruined his parents’ and his by extension, returned with a vengeance, and he became more determined than ever to fulfill this career goal.

Putting himself through university by working three jobs at once and struggling to pay off his mother’s hospital bills and funeral costs at the same time, Eddie earned degrees in criminology and criminal psychology, eventually entering the FBI as an agent for its Critical Incident Response Group. Eddie relished this job and every case his team tackled, and worked just as hard as he had to earn his degrees and get there. He genuinely appreciated and cared about all the people on his CIRG team, but he’d never had that many friends anyway, and how dedicated he was to his job didn’t leave much room for anyone else in his life.

That was, until his team had been instructed to work a case with the Behavioural Analysis Unit, and Eddie met some people who would change his life for the better.
