Redemption Ch.7

Summary - this is the story of how you met the infamous Black widow, but you know her as Natasha. Meeting by pure chance thanks to your ability to teleport, a friendship blooms and turns into something more.

A/N- This one’s a little short but the next chapter will be longer.

Through the darkness you could feel shoulder burn with pain, your mind was clouded no doubt due to the sleeping drug-laced inside the arrowhead, the memory of Natalia’s panicked face breaks through your drugged mind. Bolting out the small bed, you hiss at the sting that erupts in your shoulder, quickly taking in your surroundings you note you're in the med bay back at shield.

Closing your eyes focusing your mind, you think of Clint. Firstly to apologise for compromising the mission and in the hope, he wouldn't be with Fury.

Opening your eyes you jump, finding yourself in one of the board rooms, Clint and Maria were sat in chairs to your right, in front of you was Fury and Secretary Pierce.

You were fucked.

“Ah Y/N how nice of you to drop by,” Fury says giving you a look of disappointment as you take a seat next to Clint. Who doesn't look at you and you don't blame him if he had done something like that on a mission you'd give him hell.

“What the hell were you thinking Agent, not only did you compromise the mission but you spared the life of a criminal.” Secretary Pierce says, his anger with you only growing as he spoke. You shifted in your seat, knowing you were gonna have to tell them everything. Yet, in your defence how were you to know she was the target?

“Is she alive?” You ask, swallowing your nerves, looking past Pierce to Fury. His arms where crossed over his chest making him unreadable.

“No thanks to you.” Fury replies again looking at you with disappoint. You let out a sigh and look down at your feet, “You gonna make us ask?” looking up you see that now he looked at you with concern. Since recruiting you Fury had tried to put together where you traveled and why after the time you where hospitalised why you stopped.

“It’s a long story,” you breath out, looking at Fury hoping that he would drop the subject for now. You didn’t know if you'd be able to open up about your past with her.

“Get explaining Y/L/N, this woman is a threat to our national security! She should be dead! She just assisted in a hospital going up in flames with children still in it!” Pierce yells over at you, his face slowly turning red in anger.  

“We’ve known each other since we where kids okay!” You snap back causing everyone to look at you in shock, no one had ever spoken to Pierce like that.

“What do you mea-“ Pierce started before Fury cut him off.

“We can use that for the interrogation. Barton take an earpiece and if she doesn't talk Y/L/N you can help get her talking.” You raise an eyebrow to Fury, silently asking him what he meant. He simply gave you a small smile and nod before Clint and Maria stood up, knowing you should go with them and leave Fury and Pierce to talk.

You follow Clint and Maria down the hall to another room, where you saw the two way mirror that looked into the interrogation room. Your breath hitched when you saw her, her hair was a mess, soot covered her face, dried blood covered her hands and arms and parts of her shirt. You knew it was your blood, looking closely you could tell she was keeping a tight grip on her emotions. She didn’t know you were alive. The door opened to revel Fury and Pierce who looked more than pissed off. Clint handed you the earpiece for you to communicate through before quickly exited the room and made his way into the interrogation room slowly walking around the table taking a seat opposite her.

“So you gonna speak or you gonna sit there in silence?” Clint asks, she doesn't respond continuing to stare at her hands.

“Ask better.” You say biting the inside of your cheek to stop yourself from smiling. The memory of the first time you met her quickly played through your mind, a bittersweet moment that helped you with getting answers out of people.

“What’s your name?” Clint asks leaning forward in his chair resting his arms on the table.

“Natasha Romanoff,” She says quietly, still staring at her hands. Her accent had changed, no longer a soft Russian lull, but now it sounded more of a neutral with a slight American twang.

“You knew her?” Clint asks softly nodding to the blood on her hands. Her eyes snapped up staring him down. He chose his words carefully looking for a response and he got one.

“She’s dead?” She asks flatly, no emotion in her voice. Clint nodded, you see a flicker of emotion run through her, regret, the others missed it. “No, I didn’t know her.”

“Why were you in the hospital?”

“Visiting a friend.”

“In a children's hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Okay, what’s your job?”

“I’m a ballerina.”

“A ballerina with these?” he says throwing down two Makarov pistols.

“They’re not mine,” she shrugs, you could see Clint’s anger grow.  

“Ask where she trained,” You say into the mic, Clint’s eyes flash to the mirror before back to her. She too was now looking in the mirror almost as if she knew you were there.

“Where were you trained?” Clint asks after a few seconds.

“Bolshoi.”

“That's in Russia, you don't sound Russian.” Clint challenged thinking he had her. She smiles leaning forward replying to him in Russian, you couldn't help but laugh at what she says both Maria and Fury look at you questioningly.

“She said a donkey doesn't look like an ass but you do.” You quickly translated. Clint stands up slamming his fist on the table.

“Cut the bullshit who are you?” Clint says his anger.

“I’m Natasha Romanoff, I’m one of the twenty-eight ballerinas with the Bolshoi. The training is hard but the glory of the Soviet culture and the warmth of my parents -“ She begins to say equally angry, your mind begins to wander back to all your steal moments with her. Before you could blink you jump into the room behind her.

“No,” You say quietly announcing your presence, Natalia stops mid-sentence, Clint’s eyes snap to you and she tenses in her seat. “You’re name is Natalia Alianovna Romanova, when you were ten you met a girl, calling her strange but soon she became your friend. You were told you were a ballerina but trained to be something else, for five years you lied to the girl about what you were but she didn't care she saw beyond all of that eventually it turned into more than friendship but before anything could happen you were discovered together. They took her and beat her then tied her to a chair forcing you to kill her.”

You watch her head bow slightly, Clint silently piecing together the whole story looking at you with understanding and sorrow. You struggle to keep your emotions in check, The events that haunt your past it was finally out in the open.

“You are mistaken,” she whispers after a few moments lowering her head again. It was then you noticed the dull chain around her neck. You couldn't help but smirk slowly walking up behind her pulling the chain up quickly allowing the dog-tags to pop out the top of her shirt, she gasped at the action before turning to look at you, gasping “Y/N…”

Dmitry’s blood turn to ice as he stops in his tracks. His heart jumps in his throat, beating so furiously he’s afraid he might throw up. When he turns around to face her again, it’s with a pale face and a ringing in his ears. He points one threatening finger at her as he walks toward her.

“If you weren’t a Grand Duchess…” he starts. He’s beaten people to a pulp for less, as a teenager. It really is only her blood, and her guard glaring daggers at the back of his head, that stops Dmitry from truly threatening her.

“I’d like to see you try,” she replies, her voice cold. Then she repeats, “My father killed yours for his beliefs. I want to pay you for yours.”

“What the fuck does that even mean?”

The Tsar and his family live, and make it out of Yekaterinburg. But the Bolsheviks live too, and the tsar's power is greatly reduced. Tensions between the White Russians and Red Russians are simmering, and before they get to a boiling point, key leaders of both sides decide that something must be done to unite the two factions. A kicker is proposed at the end of several long policy and government changes: a Romanov daughter is set to marry a good and loyal son of the Bolshevik faction.

That son is twenty-two year old Gleb Vaganov, a Party member who would really just like to read his copy of Pravda in peace, and that daughter is nineteen year old Anastasia Romanova, who wasn't planning on being married until all three older sisters walked down the aisle and still helps her brother Alexei with his pranks.

In other words, it's as close to a romcom as you can get in 1920s Communist Russia.

A close-to-contemporary-times epilogue to Anastasia, commenting on the continuing history of the Romanov family with speculation as to what Anya and Dmitry's life together would have been like.
