Ch 212: That Butler, Going South

Basically, the chapter covers Sebastian and Ciel traveling by train to Brighton, discussing the servants’ missions as Ciel enjoys breakfast in the dining car.

(Remember that all the missions are happening simultaneously more or less, so Ciel doesn’t know how successful or not they all were.)

It’s actually quite brilliant of Yana and her team to time things like this. This chapter is a great way for fans who may have lapsed during the servant arcs to catch up again, or even for new fans lured in by the anime to get a taste of the manga.

It’s also interesting to see a how a some of the scenes mirror panels/moments from previous arcs.

For example, the shot of Sebastian and Ciel on the train together is akin to the end of the circus arc. (And admire how much her art has improved!)

Later, we get a (shocking, to me, anyway) shot of Sebastian sitting at the table with Ciel as equals, reminiscent of when they ironed out the details of the contract.

The chapter begins with the two of them on the train in their first class compartment, en route to Brighton from Reading.

Sebastian, ever the conscientious butler, notices the time and mentions breakfast, but Ciel is cautious: they’re fugitives, after all. Sebastian points out that most people wouldn’t expect a criminal to be casually taking a meal in the dining car. Seeing his point (and since Ciel is driven by his stomach lol), they go to have breakfast together.

They then discuss the servants’ missions and what they expect. For example, Ciel brings up the point that Lau can only be trusted so far, and he is the one who first brought their attention to the whole mess back in the Campania arc with Karstein Hospital. And he is a mafia boss.

But, both of them acknowledge that Bard is the smartest and most capable of the four servants (Bard, Mey, Finny, Snake), and that he managed to make it to the UK all the way from America alone. Plus, he’s trustworthy. Ciel points out that’s precisely why he paired them up. (Seeing them compliment my man 😭😭… Take that, Bard haters!)

They also discuss the mission Ran Mao and Mey are undergoing and ofc Snake and Finny. (I’m sorry but I’m tired and I don’t care as much about the other servants as Bard so I’m… not going into detail on their pages. Maybe tomorrow if I have time and spoons I’ll make an add-on to this going over those pages.)

This panel is one of my fave moments in the chapter… it translates more or less like this:

Mey: For our lord

Bard: With pride

Snake: With my life on the line

Finny: I do the assigned work and see it through to the end

Despite initially being wary of leaving their compartment, when Sebastian suggests they leave the dining car, Ciel wants to stay and stretch his legs. It’s only a few hours to Brighton by train.

Looks like next week we’ll start the arc in earnest and maybe learn how they plan to infiltrate the hotel.

i feel like i need to go back and reread the earlier manga even though they were retconned within the timeline but i feel so bad for mei in chapter 15 :(

i think it was in st.freya high/escape from nagazora (which i know are ggz or honkai gakuen 2 manga but it was on the reading list so i read it anyways asdlkfah), but i think a lot about how she was so afraid of her powers as a herrscher, and how it was kiana that had saved her back then.

there's "will of the herrscher" where she finds out that kiana's the herrscher of the void, and in parallel with escape from nagazora, mei tries to save kiana, and calling out to kiana, she does manage to get kiana's consciousness back but loses it so quickly and soon enough loses kiana in the process

then finally over in arc city, when she thought she would be able to reunite with kiana and bring kiana back home -- even despite everything, even despite how much kiana feels like she doesn't deserve to go home -- she still isn't able to save kiana the way kiana had saved her several times now, and how powerless she must feel against durandal taking kiana away from her.

she just wants kiana back :( please reunite them...

Mei wasn't someone to be liked being watched, though using an eyepatch definitely could caught anyone's attention, she was always more used to be shy. ironically im working on two seperate fics for mei mei and nanami but i havent begun one where they're both involved with reader :oo

obviously i think it would be pretty intense from the start...but right now ive been a little obsessed with a vamp au involving them...them both being vamps that take reader under their wing ugh wowza (something reversed would be really cool too i think, maybe nanami and mei mei competing to get to know more about/research vamp!reader and then drama ensues)

but yeah! i like the forced proximity of it, because im sorta imagining the very small amount of vamp people out there getting lonely ya know? so it's bound nanami and mei mei meet (and have certain relations...),,,,but they gen kind of hate each other (their morals are so opposite that they overlap a lot also if that makes sense) and then they. both fall in love with the same human?!?!?! THE DRAMA im driving myself kind of crazy just thinking of it

i think they send each other very hateful but also weirdly emotionally charged letters lmao. like they're passionate enough for some eyebrows to be raised (mei mei very often will specifically sign her name in his letters with a bit of your blood and nanami knows it's yours without even needing to open the envelope first. it enrages him every time. but also like,,,he's a little into it,,,the same way mei is a little into the way nanami dolls you up before youre sent off to go see her)

idk this isn't very fleshed out because mei's character is still something i'm trying to capture and nanami as a vamp becomes so interesting because of the added on entrapment of his life potentially straining his personality even more! but overall, i think it's sort of difficult (in this specific au) to not feel comfortable between the two of them. despite their complicated hatred between each other and intense courting rituals they both have reliabilities that are physical and emotional and so so very hard to ignore
