Lawless Lawyer - 6/10

This drama was very mid. I liked the overall story because I love a good takedown of corrupt and powerful people. And ofc Lee Joon-ji was super hot (ESPECIALLY when the show learned into the character’s gangster past and gave him cool fight scenes) and charming as the male lead, Bong Sang-pil. But I feel like the show stumbled when it came to building up the cast of characters around the protagonists. They very much felt like caricatures whereas the cast of characters surrounding the antagonists were way more compelling and felt real as characters.

It’s not the worst thing, but it holds the show back from becoming truly great. Another thing that dragged the show down? The romance. lol. It just felt forced and unnecessary. It added nothing to the show. The show could have been the exact same even if the relationship between the male and female lead was purely platonic. Plus like... lol W H Y did she find out that he’d basically been stalking her for years and then immediately jump into bed with him? Like... WHAT????

But like in spite of that, the central story of the show is quite entertaining. Lots of mind games and strategies and moving parts all to try to take down a very wealthy and powerful corrupt judge. It’s fun to watch Sang-pil’s plans unfold and to watch Judge Cha Moon-sook try to outmaneuver him and throw basically everyone under the bus so that she can secure more power for herself. lol She’s shameless and ngl, I kind of love her for it?

Weirdly, I think my favorite character ended up being the prosecutor that Sang-pil brings to KiSeong from Seoul. Prosecutor Cheon Seung-beom is not a flashy character at all, but lmao I just kind of ended up loving him and his determination to play by the rules and use the law to defeat corruption? Plus I like that while he comes to respect Sang-pil, he’s not charmed by him, you know? lol idk! I just enjoyed him!

So you know, this drama wasn’t terrible and it wasn’t a waste of time, but it felt like it dragged at parts and the various law firm employees ended up being kind of grating cartoonish figures vs actually interesting characters.

Hi Bye Mama (Spoiler Free Review)

This drama will tear your heart but it will fix it before you notice just to scatter your heart into millions of pieces until you’re left with nothing.

This is a story about Cha Yu Ri who dies in a car accident and watches her daughter as a ghost.

Until one day when she gets a chance to be a human again but only for 49 days, seeing her husband and child who are not hers anymore, meeting her friends and reunion with her family. I’m already tearing up while writing this, yesterday was probably not enough.

I liked everything: characters, the story, actors, side characters, so I will just slowly move on with that.

It was so heartbreaking to watch Yu Ri, her love for her daughter Seo Woo and how she learns that she doesn’t know everything about her, how she wants to hide from her family and everyone because she knows how hard it will be for them.

What I really liked about this is that we don’t have an evil step mom, Hi Bye Mama gave us Min Jeong who gave her all to Seo Woo and with that a viewer couldn’t really fully root for Yu Ri as they both doing their best.

Yu Ri’s (ex?) husband Gang Hwa... I feel so sorry for this man, he had to go through so much and just imagine seeing your wife again seems wonderful but now he’s married with another women...

Her friends were also very interesting characters and the drama perfectly showed how they all grieved and how they had to move on with their lives.

At this point I’m just repeating myself with how hard was it to watch everyone trying to move on but now having Yu Ri back, but I’m doing it because I cried in probably every episode.

What I would’ve liked to see is Pil Seung (a son of a dead family) with Yu Ri, maybe not like a love triangle because no need for that but just beings friends would’ve been nice.

Now they just showed him for a moment and when you think he will be in more episodes he suddenly disappears like he never was there.

It may seem unnecessary as it’s not really doing anything for the plot but I really liked the ghost stories about their families and their deaths it gave us a break from Yu Ri’s sadness but also gave us someone else’s (conclusion: you can’t runaway from tears).

I know I’m just rambling about the same thing and I myself still can’t get around my thoughts but the drama is really good.

If you want to feel something, cry your eyes out this drama is perfectly for you.

Second Lead Losers, K-drama Edition Key:

⭐Low key frustrating, a big baby.

⭐⭐A real jerk. Would definitely manipulate lead into liking him, possibly verbally abusing her and gaslighting. Would lie to get what he wants and causes actual harm to the lead before he does change and get redeemed a little.

⭐⭐⭐The worst of the worst. All of the above with added murderous intent. A literal villain. These guys are usually integral to the story, so they have to exist but protect the main and do not ship this toxic pairing. Not redeemable.

Second Lead Losers, K-drama Edition:

The Tale Of Nokdu, Cha Yool Mu: ⭐⭐⭐

This guy is a straight up sociopath. What’s most disturbing about him is that he presents as a Really Good Guy at first. In actuality, he thinks of the female lead as property owed to him and will definitely murder for that and pretty much anything else. Kindly feeds a small child while trying to murder her family. Yeesh. 

Angel’s Last Mission: Love, Ji Kang Woo ⭐

Dude just gives me the creeps. He is in love with a different version of the main and thus feels like he’s owed love from her. He is manipulative and off putting.

When the Camellia Blooms, Kang Jong Ryul ⭐⭐

Rich privileged celebrity who realizes he’s lost his first love and wants her back. He doesn’t seem to know why he wants her back or even care about how she feels. He TAKES PIL-GU FROM HER. He does redeem himself a little at the end but honestly every scene he was in was super annoying.

A Poem A Day, Shin Min Ho ⭐⭐

I can barely remember this dude but I do know he physically pushes her and is such a winey jerk, like almost the whole time. 

The Best Hit, Hit The Top, Lee Ji Hoon ⭐

To be clear, I loved this drama and I actually really liked Ji Hoon’s character for the most part. But the way he oversteps with his friendship with Woo Seung made me really uncomfortable. Girl doesn’t like you dude! 100% redeemable tho.

Just Between Lovers, Seo Joo Won ⭐

He almost got two stars but since everyone is so damaged, I’m giving him a little bit of a pass. See, he’s her boss and him pushing the relationship openly, even while knowing she likes someone else is just icky.

Extraordinary You, Baek Kyung ⭐⭐⭐

Baek Kyung is one of those second leads that makes a drama. He HAS to exist for the plot to work and the show would not be the same without him. However, he is a jerk through and through, up until the very last minute in which he sort of redeems himself a little but maintains jerk status. He has all opportunities to apologize and literally never does. What a weirdo, plotting to kill his fiance off stage and then sort of taking it back, but definitely wishing he could date a shell of a human :P #leejaewookisapuppytho

The Heirs, Choi Yeong Do ⭐⭐

I almost didn’t add this because I don’t ship the leads either but he IS an annoying second lead. Both are not healthy pairings so what can you do? But Yeong Do is a bully and bullies are literally the worst. If this was a historical drama, he’d have totally murdered to get the girl. Honestly I can barely remember this show. 

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, In Gook Doo ⭐

This is a weird one because SHE likes HIM! But he’s so mean to her you guys! Like, really toxic about how gender roles work, and just pushed all my buttons (the bad ones).

Flower Boy Next Door, Oh Jin Rak ⭐

Your standard whiney “I’m owed this girl cause I was here first” type of dude.

My Absolute Boyfriend, Ma Wang Joon ⭐⭐

Ugh. This guy broke up with his girlfriend for k-drama reasons and just goes around being rude and petty. He’s happy to manipulate his ex while they are together and broken up. To be fair, there are a lot of things to hate about this drama so he’s just the icing on the cake.

Kim’s Grand Slam Helps Twins Beat Lions!

The LG Twins have been playing short-handed over the past few weeks. Roberto Ramos was out for a week and is back, but Yong-Taik Park is still out with a hamstring injury. The Twins entered today having lost four straight games and were on the outside of the playoff race. The Twins morale was low until the last few innings of the series finale against the Lions in Daegu. The Lions offense got the scoring started in the second inning. Jun-Seok Song lined a two-out double to right to bring up Min-Ho Kang, who drilled a Chan-Heon Jung fastball out to left for a two-run homer. The Lions had a two-run lead after two innings of play. Meanwhile, Chae-Heong Choi threw five shutout innings for Samsung. Pil-Joon Jang threw a perfect sixth, but things started to go south for the Lions in the seventh. Bon-Hyeok Koo drew a one-out walk to ignite a rally. Chun-Woong Lee drew another walk and Hyun-Soo Kim hit an RBI single to center. This cut the Lions lead in half and we headed into the eighth inning. Ji-Hoon Jang entered the game for Samsung and things did not go well at all. Roberto Ramos led-off the eighth and was hit in the foot by a pitch. Ji-Hwan Oh walked with one-out and Ho-Eun Kim lined a pinch-hit run-scoring single to right. This tied the game at two, but the Twins were far from done. Chang-Gi Hong walked and pinch-hitter Keun-Woo Jeong delivered an RBI groundout to short. LG had a 3-2 lead and kept the chain moving as Chun-Woong Lee walked to load up the bases. The next batter, Hyun-Soo Kim drilled a first-pitch fastball out to right for a grand slam. It was his eighth homer of the season and put the Twins up 7-2. The Lions would inch closer in the bottom of the eighth. Young-Jin Choi lined a double to left and Seung-Gyu Park hit an RBI double to left to pull the Lions within four runs. Woo-Young Jung came on to close out the game and had a scoreless ninth for the Twins, who snapped a four-game losing streak. The Twins are back in the fourth spot in the KBO with the victory. 

-Final Thoughts- Chae-Heung Choi was very good for the Lions. He threw five shutout innings and allowed two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Chan-Heon Jung threw a solid game for the Twins as well. He went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Sang-Su Kim led the game with four hits for Samsung. Hyun-Soo Kim was the leader for the Twins with two hits, a homer, and five RBI’s. Kang-Nam Yoo and Chang-Gi Hong added two hits each. We are now through nine weeks of KBO action in 2020. The next game will be the Twins and Bears on Tuesday. The pitching match-up should be Woo-Chan Cha against Young-Ha Lee as the two rivals square off.

In executing his plan to bring down Cha Moon-sook and Ahn Oh-ju, Bong Sang-pil has an ace up his sleeve—that is, Prosecutor Cheon Seung-beom, whose previous win earned Sang-pil a criminal record by sending him to prison. Knowing that Prosecutor Cheon is the sort of person who only trusts hard facts and numbers written in documents, Sang-pil brings with him documents showing Ohju Group’s intentional bankruptcy (*as evidence of the company’s corruption) and hands them over to Cheon, suggesting the latter return to Kiseong.  

Upon his return to the Kiseong district prosecutors’ office, Cheon appoints Detective Kong Jang-su as his investigator and begins seizure and search of Kiseong Savings Bank as their first subject of investigation, which is involved in Ohju Group’s corruption. The arrest of the bank’s chairman puts immediate pressure on Cha Moon-sook and Ahn Oh-ju. These two have already decided to appoint the bank’s chairman as new CEO of Ohju Group by selling shares in the group and putting them in a blind trust.

But as their plans go awry, Cha Moon-sook suggests Ahn Oh-ju that they sever their ties to the bank’s chairman and Ahn donate the group to the Cha Byung-ho (her late father) Foundation. As she reveals her true colors as a greedy person beneath that saintly mask, viewers wonder how their relationship will change.

Meanwhile, Woo Hyung-man has nothing to lose especially following his wife’s death. He hands all the documents proving the corruption of Ohju Group over to Sang-pil and Jae-yi, and sets out to kill Ahn Oh-ju by himself, only to be pinned down and kidnapped by Ahn. Sang-pil, together with Tae Gwang-su, comes to Woo’s rescue, but Woo dies after getting hit in the head by one of Ahn’s thugs.  

Bong Sang-pil and Ha Jae-yi once again show their defiance against Cha Moon-sook. Ha Jae-yi has had a close relationship with Cha and looked up to her like her own mother, but after finding out about all the evil deeds done by Cha, Jae-yi keeps her distance from her. Cha tries to placate Jae-yi and turn her against Sang-pil by ending Jae-yi’s suspension, but Jae-yi ultimately becomes her enemy.

Jae-yi defiantly tells Cha, “Once I have my law license reinstated, I will conduct a thorough investigation of your sins and take you to court.” Soon after, Sang-pil comes up to Cha and says, “You’re smiling now, but you look like you’re trying too hard. That’s how you feel when someone you cherished leaves you.” The scenes look forward to the actions Bong and Ha will take to bring down Cha and Ahn.

The episode also reveals the truth behind the associations among Woo Hyung-man, No Hyun-ju, Jae-yi’s mother, and Choi Jin-ae, Sang-pil’s mother. Cha Moon-sook and Choi Jin-ae used to be close friends. But when Choi suggested Cha turn herself in, saying “Truth is something you can never bury,” Cha retorts, “Who do you think you are, giving me advice? Just don’t do anything and stay quiet.”

Woo Hyung-man turns out to be the one who saved Jae-yi’s mother, betraying Ahn Oh-ju, and told her, “Live quietly forever. That’s what you can to do to save your family. Don’t come back to Kiseong.” No Hyun-ju has thus stayed quiet for 18 years.

After getting a call from Woo, No returns to Kiseong and the first place she goes to is Mr. Ha’s Photo Studio. She cries watching her husband and daughter from a distance. Then later, at Woo’s funeral, she runs into her daughter, stoking viewers’ curiosity.

The Episode 8 preview shows Choi Dae-woong in trouble and Bong Sang-pil desperately holding onto rope, ramping up tension to the max. Viewers will find out whether this indicates more obstacles to Bong and Ha’s happiness.
