Experiment!Wheeljack AU

In Transformers: Exiles, there’s this one throwaway line about Wheeljack that I found really interesting. A character named Chaindrive has just been teleported to Optimus via what I believe is implied to be the first Groundbridge. When questioned on how he got there all the way from Cybertron, Chaindrive responds that Wheeljack built the ship that brought him there (which means Exiles might confirm that Wheeljack invented the Groundbridge, but I’m not entirely sure, and that’s also not the focus of the post lol). But Optimus doesn’t know who Wheeljack is, so he asks Chaindrive, who gives this very interesting response after explaining who Wheeljack is:

“We found him wandering outside Crystal City. We think he escaped from Shockwave, or at least that’s what Alpha Trion thinks.”

This line really caught my interest, so of course I ended probably overthinking it making an AU about it. What if Wheeljack had been Shockwave’s prisoner? Shockwave is pretty widely known for his cruel experiments, and it seems like he has a fondness for turning bots into monsters (although I could be wrong about that because I’m pretty new to the TF fandom)?? Anyways, that led me to creating a bit of an AU where Wheeljack was taken prisoner and subjected to Shockwave’s experimenting for months before he managed to escape, and how that affects him in TFP canon. I based all the backstory heavily off of TFP, Exodus, Exiles, and Retribution.

(For anyone who doesn’t know: Transformers: Exodus, Transformers: Exiles, and Transformers: Retribution are a trilogy that is canon to the Aligned Continuity. There are free PDFS of all three books online, that’s how I read them)

Some things I have written for the AU: Shockwave tested an experimental virus on him that mutated his frame and also kinda destroyed it a little. After Wheeljack destroyed the rest of the virus, Shockwave fixed him up so that the mutations were a part of him since he couldn’t test it on anyone else. The virus made him more predatory. When Wheeljack escaped, he was lucky enough that he could hide the mutations well enough that he could pass off as odd but normal. It also meant he never took off his battle mask in front of other bots unless he trusted them completely, because he has a modified jaw (think Terrorcon!C.Y.L.A.S), and while the seams can pass off as scars, he’s still scared of what people will think. He became very close with Rack n’ Ruin (two other experiments of Shockwave who were fused into one bot) because of their shared bad experiences with Shockwave. Because of this, Rack n’ Ruin are the only ones (so far) who know what happened to him. In TFP, he tends to act a little different - he stares randomly a lot, refuses any kind of medical scans, and has a nasty habit of sneaking up on people. In TFP canon, it seems like Wheeljack doesn’t like Ultra Magnus because he had the Wreckers retreat from Iacon when Wheeljack thought they should stand and fight even if they all died, but I’m not sure about that. With that in mind, Wheeljack would probably be a little more resentful towards Ultra Magnus in this AU because since he made the choice to leave Iacon and keep the Wreckers alive, Iacon fell into Shockwave’s hands.
