Nav Varsh Abhinandan
The beautiful Spring season is here and the Chaitra Navratri shall follow soon. The new leaves, buds and flowers signify new life, new beginnings, prosperity and renewed hope! Our ancients calculated the new year from the auspicious Chaitra month. On 22 March, 1957, the Gregorian calendar was adopted for official purposes. 22 March, 2023 of the Gregorian calendar marks the beginning of the Vikrami Samvat 2080.

(The image above shows 12 Pictures of The Sun, Each Month, Same Place, Same Time. Photo by Ciro Russo)
Lord Brahma started creating the universe on the first day of the Chaitra Navratri. Jau (barley) was the first crop to be cultivated then. We sow Jau and grow Khetri in reverence of this crop and then offer it back to Mother Nature. King Vikramaditya was coronated King on this day. The Vikrami Samvat or the Hindu calendar is named after him.
Navratri literally means nine nights. These nights are symbolic of the darkness of ignorance. The purpose of celebrating Navratri is to enable humans to overcome this darkness. When we worship the Devi or the Mother Goddess, she is the unified form of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. These three forms together form Shakti (power). This Shakti is the energy that is emanant in Nature and the Lord himself controls it. The ninth day of the Chaitra Navratri is Ram Navami. This marks the birthday and the coronation of Bhagwan Rama.
The feminine aspect of Divinity is worshipped in Navratri. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that the word Stree is made up of- Sa, Ta and Ra. Sa signifies Sattvic, Ta signifies Tamasic and Ra signifies the Rajasic nature of women. Stree thus represents the combination of the three gunas. You can judge a house by the Greh-Lakhmi (lady of the house), she represents the ‘everything’ of the house. The Vedas declare that where women are honoured, there divinity is present with all its potency. We worship five kinds of mothers. Firstly, we worship the Deha-Mata. She is the one who bore us for nine months and gave us the gift of life. Secondly, we worship the Gau-Mata. The cow is given the exalted position of a mother because she sustains us by converting her blood into milk. Thirdly, we revere the Bhu-Mata or Mother Earth. She is the one, on whom we are dependant for everything like shelter, water, food etc. Fourthly, we revere the Desh-Mata. Our country gives us protection, rights and the support system of society. Indians are perhaps the only people who revere the country as Mother India. Fifthly, we revere the Veda-Mata. We revere the Vedas as our heritage and as spiritual treasures. They tell us the purpose of life and guide us on the path of self-realisation.
For those who are not spiritually inclined, I would say that Navaratri is a time to revere nature and offer thanksgiving for all that nature has bestowed us with. Resources like the Earth, air, water, minerals, oils etc. should not be wasted or misused. It is important to conserve the environment for the generations to come.
Scientifically speaking, the Chaitra Navratri is placed at the intersection of winter and summer. The body needs to detox at this time to adjust itself for the upcoming summer season. And that is exactly why Navratri fasting is recommended. You can have fruits and nuts along with one meal of alternate grains (no cereals like wheat, rice etc.). Navratri foods include Kuttu ka atta, Swaank ke chawal, Singhaare ka aata, etc. And you cook with Rock salt which is an excellent detoxifying agent. But remember that a fast is a fast, as long as you don’t convert it into a feast!
So let’s do Devi Pooja in Navratri and revere the Mother Goddess in her beautiful Nav-Durga form. And while doing Devi-Poojan and Kanya-Poojan, do extend the respect to all the living goddesses around you … your mother, wife, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law and just any girl out there! Happy Navratri!

Tumblr media
Since our childhood, a lot of us have been told, don’t eat chicken in Navratri. There have been a lot of other things we have been told that we should not do or should do. But there is one question we all might have had some time in our lives: Why is Navratri celebrated? What is Navratri?
Now a lot of you might have been curious at some point in your lives about several aspects of Navratri like: Is it a festival? Is it a series of festivals? Why is it celebrated 2 times a year? Is it about power? God? Gender? What is it that makes this entire nine days a celebration? SO, worry not… We at Rudraksha hub have heard you. In this blog, we will talk about Navratri, its importance, significance and benefits.
Let’s start with the first things first. Navratri, as the name suggests is nine days and nights celebration of Goddess Durga descending on Earth to remove all evils and bless all her devotees with utmost love, care, and blessings. Devi Durga is considered as the sign of victory over all odds and evils.
Navratri: A Celebration of Nine Days
Hence, these nine days are celebrated with love, hope, and devotion to get the blessings of Goddess Durga and always be safe in every avenue of life. The tenth day is celebrated as Dussehra, for the victory of good over evil.
There are 2 Navratris celebrated every year, Chaitra Navratri which comes in the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar and Shardiya Navratri which comes in the Sharad month of the Hindu calendar. We just discussed Shardiya Navratri. In the next video, we will talk about Chaitra Navratri, the one which is upcoming and will be celebrated from 2nd April 2022 to 10th April 2022 and ends with Ramnavami on 11th April 2022. We will publish a blog on Ramnavami also very soon. We will link the video of this blog when we upload it alongside as well with all attached links. It is also the last day of the Vasanta Navratri. The festival celebrates the birth of the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Rama, to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalaya. While Navratri is celebrated with much fanfare in the North, devotees in the South celebrate Ram Navami with greater fervour. It is believed that Lord Vishnu was born on the earth as a son to the King of Ayodhya, Dasharatha, to end the atrocities committed by the demons; specially the demon king; Ravana. Ravan had been granted a boon of invincibility against Gods and so, Lord Vishnu was sent in the form of a human. Rama killed Ravana in order to maintain Dharma, on earth. He exemplified the ‘perfect’ person and was the epitome of an example of how to live life in accordance to ‘Dharma’. So, this festival celebrates the victory of Dharma over Adharma. Fasting on this day signifies purification of body and mind and thus, seeks perfection as a human being. On the day of Ram Navami, devotees get up early and after bathing, offer water to the Sun God as the Sun God is believed to be the ancestor of Lord Rama. Chaitra / Vasanta Navaratri ~ ThE springtime InvoCation Of Adi sHaKti
Chaitra Navaratri , or the nine (nava-) nights (- ratri) of Durga, are celebrated in the first nine days of the bright half of the month of Chaitra (starting from the day after Amavasya). According to the Indian lunar calendar, this usually occurs in late March or early April.
This period of nine days heralds the onset of spring and also marks the beginning of the new year for the hindu calendar in most parts of India. The nine-day festival honors the role of three prinicipal female Goddesses in the Hindu pantheon – Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. The period of Chaitra Navaratri concludes with Ramanavami (or Lord Rama’s birthday) on the tenth day of the festival.
Tumblr media
Chaitra Navratri Customs & Traditions :
The nine day period is marked as a period of “cleansing” and fasting by all devotees of Devi. The durga suktam is chanted with great vigour every evening during this period. The festival is marked on the eighth day or ashtami by honouring a group of kanjaks or pre-pubescent girls.
A group of five (or seven or nine) such girls are invited into the household and treated as representatives of Durga. The head of the household washes their feet, and then they are fed a sumptuous meal of halwa, puris, black chana and yogurt with boondi. They are then given a set of red clothes or a red chunni and a small gift of cash and asked to bless the household.
LEGEND OF CHAITRA NAVARATRI :
King Dhruvasindu of the kingdom of Kosala was killed by a lion on a hunting trip. In his place, Prince Sudarsana was to be crowned King. But King Yudhajit of Ujjain and King Virasena of Kalinga wanted to secure the throne of Kosala for their respective grandsons. As a result a war erupted in which killed King Virasena. Queen Manorama, the daughter of King Virasena fled with Prince Sudarsana and an eunuch to a forest where they took refuge with Rishi Bharadwaj in his hermitage.
With the obstacles in his path removed King Yudhajit crowned his grandson Satnijit at Ayodhya, capital of kingdom of Kosala and tried to capture Queen Manorama and the prince. However the Rishi refused to let harm come to those who had sought protection from him. Prince Sudarsana started to call the enuch, whose name was “Kleeba”, by the word “Kleen”. This syllable was a powerful sacred Sankrit mantra and is the root syllable of the Divine Mother, or Maa Durga. Since the Prince Sudarsana went on repeating the word he obtained peace of mind by the grace of the Divine Mother.
Maa Durga appeared to him, blessed him, and granted him certain divine weapons. Years later when the emissaries of the King of Benares passed through the ashram of Rishi, they saw the noble Prince Sudarsana and recommended him for marriage to Princess Sashikala, the daughter of the King of Benares. A Swayamvar was held for her to choose her future spouse and she chose Prince Sudarsana. They were joyfully wedded. King Yudhijit was present at the wedding and was angry at the King of Benares.
Maa Durga sided with the Prince and his father-in-law, the King of Benares. But King Yudhijit mocked her. Maa Durga got angry and reduced him and his army down to ashes. Prince Sudarsana, his wife Princess Shashikala and the King of Benares praised the Maa Durga which pleased her and she ordered them to worship by performing a “havan” during Chaitra Navaratri.
The Prince and his wife returned to the ashram of Rishi Bharadwaj, who gave them his blessing and crowned the Prince as the King of Kosala. As per the commands of the Divine Mother the havan is performed during the month of Chaitra and is called Chaitra Navaratri.
Tumblr media
Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth.
The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.
Chaitra Navratri in 2017, like every year, is going to be celebrated during Basant Ritu (spring season), which is the time of March - April. That is why this festival is also called Vasant Navratri or Basant Navratri.
FESTIVAL DATES : 28TH march 2017 to 5th April,2017
FULL CALENDER OF Vasanta Navaratri to be posted soon on our page ...stay tuned !

What should I say about her that she was brave , loved life and that she loved her children to bits?
The eldest daughter of a brood of 6 children. Her mother died young, leaving behind the youngest son who was only 5 years old. Rumour has it thar she cleared the air hostess interview but did not join as the calling was frowned upon. In the late 50s daughters belonging to good families simply didnt do so! But was it premonition about his short life that prompted her father to let her undergo training so she was able to secure a Government job in a Block of the Uttar Pradesh administration? The father had predicted his death accurate to the time in his diary which he wrote in his neat English hand. Sister and brother( eldest of three brothers and second after the eldest sibling) literally held his hand while is life slipped away.
The onus of the entire family was on her young shoulders. Maybe a book can be written of how the lawyer uncle entrusted with the mothers ancestral jewellery made away with it or how she got a truck loaded with their belongings in Shahjahanpur and got it it to their ancestral home in Mashak Gunj Lucknow. The tragedy of the situation was the old grandfather was alive and staying with them and had seen his young daughter in law and son pass away before his eyes. Old and broken he was in no position to provide guidance.
When I was getting married a relative from my cousin sister's sasural was there who was her youngest bhabhi. It was popular in these circles that her life could be compared to that of Rakhee in Tapasya. To the uninitiated this is a story of sacrifice of an elder sister to settle her younger siblings in life while keeping her own happiness on the back burner. I shant get into too many details but she rejected many a decent proposal as she was not sure she would be able to look after her siblings. Her extended family is said to have warned her that she would regret her decision later on. Papa ji was also working in the block of Mohan Lal Gunj as mummy ji. Their's was a "love marriage" of those days. Mummy ji's only condition was that she would continue to look after her siblings even after marriage. She related how once after her marriage she was visiting Mashak Gunj and sold one of her gold kangans so that food could be bought. Things improved after Bade mama got a job after his studies in Veterinary Sciences. She and papaji continued to aid in the education of the other brothers and sisters specially completion of chhotey mama's Archtectural degree from Roorkee. Chhotey mama looked upto her as a mother, his own mother remained a faint memory to him. Mummmy ji would relate how when she came back from her interview to get into the UP Police force he was washing potty soiled nappy of his baby niece. On being asked what he was doing he replied jokingly "Sona dho rahe hain jiji!" Mummy ji passed that interview with flying colors. She was the first police personnel inducted in in UP Police Services to provide security to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Ashit tells of the time when he as a school boy accompanied mummy ji when Indira Gandhi was visiting and going to inspect a parade in mummy's workplace.. Ashit got to shake hands with her. Chhotey mama used to tell his nephews and niece that their mother had worked hard enough it was their turn now. Unfortunately he died all too soon. His death was a major shock to mummy ji and she started losing her luxurious black hair which was when Papaji advised her to cut it short.
That is how remember seeing her first short hair gracefully clad in a saree with an ever ready smile. She was a devi bhakta and kept 9 days fast for navratri which culminated in pooja on the last day. She said she had gotten up from her pooja of chaitra navratras in 1988 when the envelope containing proposal of marriage from Daddy was slipped in under the door by the postman.
There are so many memories rushing through my mind like an express train. Mummy ji coming to our home in Kasturinagar after our wedding to attend the small reception in our IFFCO township. Snippets of conversation reverberate in my mind." Shikha yeh aapki saas hain lagti bilkul aapki mummy jaisi hain!" Ashit had also let on in early days of our courting that I resembled her. She won the prestigious Police medal and being the the first lady personnel to do so for her under cover operation to get information during the Babri masjid incident. Mummy ji came with mummy when I was struggling with 4 month old twins, having to join back to full time work after a break of almost 9 months - with no proper domestic help. She stayed on for the annaprashan. Aastha licked so much of the kheer made by her that we had to deal with an upset stomach later on!
Many many memories of shopping in Dhalgadwad Ahmedabad and also Meena Bazaar Dubai. Dubai - where I had introduced her to Art of Living and she was as excited as a child with her teacher Atul Kapoor , going for follow ups to Meadows or doing kriya on the beach.
Paralytic stroke struck her on 23rd January 2015. It struck her body not her mind and she fought valiantly to regain walking talking and continuing most activities, her love for good food and clothes remained intact as her interest in going to places. But when tragedy struck on 10th April 2018 taking away her partner of over 56 years (for better or for worse), she lost her will to live and left us almost a day to the year.
I owe a lot of things to her but what comes foremost to my mind is - Live life Kingsize....rest in peace Mummyji🙏🙏
