part two.

pairing. ex boyfriend!jungkook x reader genre. angst, mentions of smut, toxic exes warnings. very toxic depictions of relationships, hints at infidelity, drunken mistakes, they’re both very toxic for each other and just can’t stay away, brief mentions of smut word count. 2.9k note. this is just a lump of angst that my mind conjured at 1am last night, i just love angst and messy relationships that are destined to fail 😌(its not edited so if u see a typo no u dont)

It always started with a phone call.

Whether it was from you or him always changed. Sometimes he’d get the call at two in the morning, vision blurry as he brought the phone to his face and saw your name illuminated on the screen, that old goofy selfie you had together still set as your contact photo. He’d hesitate for a moment just to keep you on your toes before pressing accept, already getting up and putting pants on because he knew just what you were calling for.

Tonight was your turn to be on the receiving end, laying in bed comfortably as you scrolled through random posts to try to help you sleep, the flash of his face fills your phone, it’s a random close up photo of his eyes staring right into the camera, crinkled up in a smile. Even though his name is changed in your contacts, no longer having the cute bunny emoji tacked to the end, you know you’ll still pick up in a heartbeat. And you do.

The second you press accept you’re met with the familiar sound of his voice, slurred and thick as he speaks so jumbled up you would barely be able to understand him if you didn’t already know what he was saying. It was the same things he always said whenever he got like this, proclamations of love that only cut up your freshly scabbed over wounds, salt rubbing into them when he cries about how he misses you, promises to change.

They get cut off when the phone is yanked away from his grasp, the second familiar voice belonging to his buddy Yugyeom now speaking into the receiver. “You gotta pick him up Y/N.”

The annoyance is evident in his voice, the babbling of Jungkook still heard in the background along with the dull beat of whatever place they were outside of.

“He’s not my responsibility Yugyeom.”

He simply sighs into the phone, staring at his mess of a friend before rubbing his jaw, sore and aching from where he had just been socked after attempting to force him into an uber. “Yeah well he won’t let anyone else take him home, he’s drunk as fuck. I’ll send you the location.”

Not waiting for a response he hangs up and sends you a pin of where they’re at, thrusting the phone back into his friend’s hands before getting into that uber and leaving Jungkook alone while he whines against the dirty bar wall, crouching down onto the filthy sidewalk as the car drove off.

Yugyeom knew you would come to his rescue like you always did, never once saying no and letting Jungkook fend for himself because on the rare occasions where you’d call him drunk and crying he’d do the same.

Getting into the car still dressed in your pajamas, shoes thrown on without being laced up, hair still messy, it felt like routine now from how often it happened. Jungkook called you sober, text you while in a sane state of mind, but without fail at least once a month he’d get absolutely shit faced and call you, leaving you what he thought were heartfelt voicemails if by some chance you didn’t answer.

It was the same bar every time, a bar you used to frequent with him, knowing the location and all the small side streets to get you there without needing directions. Doing this felt like such a normal part of your life it almost made you forget that you and Jungkook weren’t together anymore. It’s been a year since you split and you still find yourself thinking if things could be different.

Would it have been best if you never confessed to each other, never admitted to the small inkling of a crush before it was able to fully blossom? It was hard not to wonder how different life would be now if you had walked away the first time things went south, if he had walked away after the first argument.

Whenever he called you, pulled you in with those drunken promises it was easy to convince yourself that your relationship was perfect, that it was worth all of the struggles. Your brain morphed each fight, each time you cried alone, twisted it around and molded it to make it easier to consume, easier to believe you were meant to be.

You thought you were soulmates, and maybe you were, two people destined to be together, meeting at the wrong time, under the wrong circumstances. What was meant to be perfect puzzle pieces connected had slowly turned into jagged edges that no longer clicked regardless of how hard you tried to jam them together, foolishly thinking you could spill your love into the gaps to mend the spaces, making the pieces whole once more.

Love was never enough.

Love made you stupid, made you blind and gullible, smiling through lies to avoid arguments, going to bed angry until he was hovering over you, coaxing you into forgiveness with soft kisses and gentle touches. It always went this way, regardless of who’s fault it was without fail he’d end up slot between your legs, the only time the puzzle pieces connected perfectly, allowing him to fuck you as if he’d never see you again. Murmurs of love and adoration were passed between panting breaths, sloppy kisses, shared moans to mask the empty promises you made every time.

Staying away from each other was a hard habit to kick, the two of you stuck on an endless game of seesaw, neither of you having the guts to get off and move on. All it took was a simple drunk phone call for you to go his way, the slur of his voice as he cries into the receiver about how much he loved you, missed you, needed you next to him, wanted to try again. It reeled you in so easily, winding you up until you were hauling your sloppy ex boyfriend off the dirty floor and into your small car.

He remembers none of this, he never did, not fully anyways. Small tidbits of words he said flash in his mind as he comes to, drool on his cheek and neck sore from the unfortunate position he had slept in, groggy and unaware of his surroundings.

He knew your apartment too well, recognized the green wall he had helped you paint, now holding endless pictures of you and your friends. None of Jungkook anymore.

All of those photos were gone now, not burned or shredded in some ritual to get over him, simply tucked into a box and shoved so far into your closet you hoped you would forget it. You never did of course, the way the box laid dust free made it clear how often you pulled it out and sorted through the photos whenever you had too much wine, whenever you had off days where you just felt so alone and wished you could go back to the times you had convinced yourself were better. They weren’t, you knew they weren’t once you sobered up and balanced out your emotions.

Jungkook doesn’t feel bothered that not a trace of him remained visible in your home, he knew his presence lingered in the cracks, buried so deep in the crevices of your mind he knew you would always think of him.

He groans softly as his eyes roam the interior of your home, the throbbing in his temples making him stop and shut his lids, not needing to analyze the place he was at less than two weeks ago when you had called him over. Jungkook briefly wonders if he should sneak his way out, not used to waking up on the couch instead of in your bed right beside you, maybe he had said something last night that crossed the line and landed him on the couch as a punishment.

As you finally emerge from your room his plan of escape is put to a stop, his eyes gravitating towards your bedroom door, seeing the way you cautiously step out. Having heard Jungkook wake up since you had already been awake for the past hour, your body not allowing you to sleep while knowing he was in the other room, it took a few minutes of courage before you were able to face him.

Spotting him on your couch shows how much he doesn’t belong, the pinned leather jacket he wore looking so harsh against the light coloring of your furniture, his dark disheveled hair contrasting with the tidy way you organized your apartment. He senses it, the skin crawling sensation that spreads the longer you stare at him, how he felt so out of place somewhere he used to call home at one point.

“Thank you for picking me up.” He chooses to break the silence, voice raspy, his internal self screaming at him for always doing this. His eyes are sincere, genuinely meaning it, knowing just how messy he got when he had too much to drink, how his friends could never handle him when he crossed the line and began to call for you.

Like always his words were routine so he expects it when you huff and say, “You need better friends Jungkook.”

“I know.” Because he did, he knew his friends enabled him, riled him up and once he became too much they pushed him onto you, knowing Jungkook’s grip on you was still too strong for you to ever say no.

“What if I hadn’t picked you up? Would they have left you on the side of the bar to fend for yourself?”

“Probably,” he shrugs, from past experiences he knows very well they would have. His friends had dealt with Jungkook crying over you far too much, their patience fully stamped out, no longer able to tolerate him when he became like this.

Not even realizing when he begins to smile as he thought of the nights you didn’t pick up, how he had ended up in the most random locations because he refused to go home to a place you weren’t, he snaps out of it when you scoff. “It’s not funny Jungkook, you could have gotten hurt or something.”

There it was, the reason you were upset. Not because he had called you and spewed the same bullshit he always did, no that you could tolerate. You were upset, and worried, that you’d get a following call from someone stating he had injured himself while calling for you.

“I know.”

You pause to breathe, his short responses not irking you like it should, arms crossed over your chest as you observe your ex boyfriend still sitting on the couch, looking like a scolded child.

“You can’t call me anymore Jungkook.” How you have the nerve to say that to him is funny, acting as if ten days ago you weren’t the one doing this to him, telling him you missed him, securing your anchor around his foot and dragging him back under with you.

This is the checklist you needed to go down, a formality of the morning after so he doesn’t mind it. Instead he frowns at the way you continue to say his name, the way it rolls off your tongue makes him wince, missing the way you’d call him Kookie, playful pet names like Bunny, something he swore he hated but secretly loved. Jungkook wished he could hear you say it again, humor you with that damned bunny eared headband he’d wear to hear you laugh, squeal as he posed and dance for whatever silly video you recorded as you shouted out the ridiculous nickname.

The last time he heard those words spill out of your mouth had been too long ago.

“I’m sorry.” he admits, he knew he had to stop, couldn’t continue to hold onto the past, knowing how wrong you were for each other but he wasn’t the only one. Those were the same words you told him ten days ago, apologizing with guilty eyes for asking him to come over when you were lonely, needing a familiar body to occupy the space next to you, wanting his hands to soothe you, make you feel whole again just for a night.

Once the sun came up it was back to normal, the two of you having the repeat conversation you had every time, the exact one you were having now. A formality. Nothing more, just mindless words that you would both agree to just to move along, to make you both feel better, more secure with yourself until the next time the phone rang.

Your heart twists in your chest as you look at him, the same toxic love you had for him brewing in your heart, spilling over and burning you but you ignore the pain, convince yourself you don’t feel it as you breathe in. That same rope latches around Jungkook’s ankle as you avert your eyes for a brief second before looking back at him with a small sigh. “Do you want breakfast? I know how you get when you have a hangover.”

He smiles for the first time, charming as always, looking up at you through the subtle waves in his hair. “I probably shouldn’t.”

You know this. He definitely shouldn’t because breakfast will turn into words exchanged, civil at first, flirty the next, a coin flipped to decide if a petty argument would begin or if you’d reminisce about the good times. Regardless of the outcome, what always followed ended with you moaning out his name as he rocked into you, those same empty promises spilling through his lips that you swallowed with a kiss.

A brief moment of bliss, a small dose of the past that only serves to hurt you further but you crave it, loving the small rush that came with arguing, the roughness of his hands as he pushed you around before sliding home, burying his face into your neck as he broke you down all over again.

Normally you’d try to convince him further, but as your mouth opens to protest you get flashes of the night before, how you had carried Jungkook up your flight of stairs, hearing him ramble about nonsense so slurred together you paid it no mind. You would have had him sleep in your bed beside you like you always did but when you fish his phone out and begin to slide his jacket off it buzzes to life.

Always being nosey you type in his password, smiling when you realize it was still your old anniversary but when you unlock it and see a flood of messages from a girl named Natalie, calling him babe, asking where he was, the smile falls from your face as you start to snoop.

It doesn’t take much scrolling through their thread of messages to easily discover she was his girlfriend, blissfully unaware that he was shit faced and calling you, confessing to his love for you while she laid at home and wondered if he was having fun with his friends. She reminded you of yourself, of the way you used to be with him and it left a sour feeling on your tongue.

“Yeah you probably shouldn’t.”

He stands up now, following you slowly as you approach the door, heavy boots thumping on the hardwood as he reluctantly steps closer to the exit. He doesn’t want to leave, wants you to try to convince him to stay, not knowing that you knew the dirty secret he was hiding buried in his phone.

You don’t decide to tell him you know, it was pointless. That was just how Jungkook was wired, so much love to give he had to spread it out, give everyone a fair share of it, choosing to pretend he wasn’t being selfish. It was naive to believe it, to think all the love he held was strictly for you, it was why he was able to pull the hood over your eyes so easily.

Even when you pull the door open and give him a tightlipped smile he knows you’ll still call him, forget all about Natalie when you’re lonely once more. So when you look him in the eyes and sigh, “Goodbye Jungkook.” He knows it’s not for long, maybe a week or so, maybe less.

He simply smiles, stuffing his hands into his jeans as he shuffles out, turning to face you as he steps backwards. “See you later Y/N.” And his words sting in a way he doesn’t mean, knowing just how right he was.

Jungkook would never mind how heavy the anchor you hooked on his ankle was because he knew you would forever be a sucker for him.

As you shut the door behind you it feels like a small weight starts to hang from your shoulders, the same tug starting from your chest, guiding you into your room until you’re pulling out the cursed box and sorting through those damned photos. With stinging eyes you flip through them for a moment, focusing on all the laughs captured on film, blurry vision moving to your phone beside you, hands already itching to call him again.

It’s as if he knows, still inside your building, lingering in the lobby to give you a moment and it doesn’t take long. Once his phone starts to vibrate he smiles, staring at the photo of you as you call him like clockwork. With a clear of his throat he answers the phone, barely saying hello before he hears a small sniffle through the speaker.

“I miss you Kookie.”

Jungkook lets his eyes shut as he presses the elevator button, loving the feeling of being needed by you, already knowing to head back up because this was routine.

“I know you do baby, I’ll be right up.”

And just like that you’re once again desperately trying to make those stupid puzzle pieces fit together, hoping that maybe this time love would be enough.

Ok, so it’s been over a year since I posted Part One of this boy on Tumblr when I was just starting out on here, and I’ve had people popping into my inbox every now and again and asking if there’ll be more. And here, finally, it is! All 5776 words of it!

All you wanted to do the next day was stay on that balcony and stare at him. His stony gaze was locked on you if you stood on the balcony, and you blew him another kiss before you went down to breakfast in the hotel, and another before you left to explore for the day. You felt a little foolish, but you thought he might appreciate it, if he could even see you when he was literally made of stone. You didn’t exactly know how his magic worked.

You really had to force yourself to go out and see some more of the city. There were art galleries and museums housing incredible artefacts from the city’s history, and you weren’t going to sit around all day waiting for your statue to come to life again. The thought occurred to you that maybe you should be surprised - or even concerned - at how quickly you’d accepted this turn of fairytale events, but all you honestly felt was excitement.

You ached all morning, still able to feel him deep within you from the night before. You kept replaying the way his whole body had gone rigid as he came inside you, his great wings spread above you like the sails of some dark ship. He had been immensely powerful, jaw gritted, muzzle pulled back and locked in a ferocious snarl that should have been terrifying, fangs flashing as he spent himself. Those enormous talons had left holes in your sheets large enough to put your fingertips through, and you hoped you wouldn’t be charged for those.

His shoulders could have been sculpted by Bernini himself from the way they curved into his biceps, and his leather-smooth, dark grey skin was flawless until it reached that extensive scaring on the right side of his face. The bomb damage in the war had ripped away the flesh of his muzzle to reveal a number of the teeth along one side of his jaw. In the moment he’d given himself to you, he’d forgotten about the ravages done to his face, and he had looked more beautiful than ever, his eyes glowing like sunset. Those growling snarls of pleasure filled your mind all day as you walked the city.

You eventually lost yourself in taking photographs of the former city gates, walking the city walls, tasting amazing local food in the market, but every time you smiled – truly smiled – it was because of him. You couldn’t remember the last time you’d really smiled like that. Sure, your ex had been able to make you laugh, but that was before he cheated on you. You shuddered at the thought of what a mess that had all been.

As you wandered up towards to the old castle on the hill above the centre of town, a chill wind began to tug at your clothes and hair, but you kept going. No point going back to an empty hotel room when your gargoyle wouldn’t be able to move for hours yet anyway. You hoped he would come back again, that he wouldn’t have grown bored already. He’d said he wanted to come back, but a lot could change in a day, as you well knew.

You couldn’t help but wonder as you walked around the grounds of the medieval fortress whether all the statues in the city could move. You eyed a fierce looking lion on a pedestal and imagined it roaming the castle grounds at night. Another gargoyle, not dissimilar to yours, leered down at you from a parapet of the castle keep, with twin horns that curved backwards over its head and a pair of large wings protruding from muscular shoulders, and you smiled as you saw it, and even greeted it as you passed beneath.

Perhaps Alesh had looked like that when he was new. You wouldn’t change him though. You liked his face the way it was. You liked to see the teeth as they ground together, you liked – “Oh hell, stop thinking about him and enjoy the damned castle, will you?” you snarled at yourself.

The sky eventually began to darken, and you made your way back to the hotel, grabbing something to eat on the way. You had a couple of hours before sunset, but when you got back to your room, you couldn’t help going to the window and peering out. Your gargoyle was still there, hand extended towards you. There were people on his balcony though, obviously on a late, guided tour of the cathedral. A sudden thrill of fear shot through you at the thought that he might have given himself away or something by randomly changing after, what, centuries of being the same, but no one seemed to notice.

One tourist did put their hat on his head and take a selfie with him. You snorted at that, imagining that somehow he would not be best pleased about that.

You showered, washed your hair, dried it, put on just a little makeup, checked your reflection in the mirror, took a deep breath, and then went back to the balcony with a book to wait for sunset.

Minutes ticked by like hours.

You could barely reach the end of a sentence without looking up at the sky to see if the sun was nearly set.

Eventually, torturously, it slid below the roofs, the tide of light washing away up the walls of the cathedral as the shadows pushed it back until it left him illuminated in a pool of fiery light.

You stared transfixed, smiling, waiting.

Slowly, very slowly, the skin seemed to come alive as the light faded to the quiet purple of twilight. His body no longer looked completely like cold stone. His tail began to move first, slowly swinging free of the pedestal like a weighted cord. Next, he shuffled the weight on his back paws, taloned toes wiggling slightly as though cold and stiff. His wings began to flex slowly, cautiously, as though they might shatter if he moved too suddenly.

He worked out the crick in his neck, and finally his shoulder released and he lowered his extended arm carefully. It honestly looked extremely painful, and you realised your brows were pinched together with worry and concern for him. Your heartbeat thudded in your ears. He looked at you and then lowered his head slightly, as though bashful. It seemed almost ludicrous that a creature as big and intimidating as him could be shy. Then he cocked his head to one side and you beckoned him questioningly over to you.

Alesh looked around before reaching down and padding across the balcony like a leopard on all fours, keeping his profile low. He popped his front paws up onto the balustrade and looked carefully in all directions, including at the windows of the hotel. His left ear – the right had been blasted off along with his horn during the war – was flat against his head and his wings were pinned to his back. He was frightened.

“You want to wait til it’s darker?” you called, as loudly as you dared.

He looked up at you with such longing in his eyes, and whined like a dog shut outdoors. He still looked stiff and sore but he shook his head. “I can’t,” he whimpered.

“Be careful…” you said. God, if anyone with a smartphone happened to be standing by the window…

He gave a tentative flap of his wings, then leapt onto the balcony railing properly and sprang off, gliding over to you and landing a little awkwardly, right at your feet. He skidded, tail working to balance him with his wings, and you had to step back to avoid being skittled like a bowling pin.

“Come inside,” you hissed, throwing the door open and stepping aside as he slithered into your room, quiet and quick as a cat’s shadow.

The moment you closed the door and drew the curtains, he turned around and all your doubts evaporated. Standing on his hind legs again, he drew you into a huge embrace, one of his huge paws around your waist, the other cradling your head. His talons pricked your scalp, but not painfully. His tail coiled around your left leg and squeezed. His wings too unfolded and he held you with those, blotting out the light so all you could do was feel him close, smell the leathery, mossy scent of his skin, and hear him breathing hard, a sound like wind through the cathedral columns.

He was cold this time. Not painfully so, but still, his skin was chilled as though, well, he’d been outside all day. You muttered something about him being chilly, and he pulled back a bit. “I’ll warm up in a moment,” he said. “I’m still… adjusting.” He pressed his muzzle to your hair and inhaled the scent of you. “I missed you. It’s been torture.”

“You should have picked an easier pose to hold all day,” you laughed, running your hands up to his massive shoulders and squeezing the muscle. It was so solid beneath your fingers you weren’t sure he wasn’t still made of stone. “Does it hurt…? When you change, I mean?”

“Yes,” he grunted. “But not for long. Now I have you, I have something to look forward to. Something to change for…”

“So if I weren’t here, you would still be stone? You don’t automatically shift at sunset?”

He shook his head, moving a little way back to let you breathe better without being smashed against his chest. His torso was smooth, though the collar of his mane hung around his neck like a mantle and trailed a little way down between the planes of his pecs and down his spine between his wings. A single line of thick hair trailed all the way down his abs to between his sculpted legs as well. He was speaking, but it was hard to concentrate on his words while you were looking at him.

His fingers slipped beneath your chin and he tilted your face up to look at him. “Are you even listening to me?” he chuckled.

You blushed, the hot sting filling your cheeks, and you looked away. “I’m sorry.” You turned your eyes back to his after a few heartbeats, and looked up at him through your lashes. “You’re so tall,” you giggled. He let go of you then and fell forward, landing silently all fours to become more like a big cat. A big cat with wings and a horn…

“Better?” He smirked and the gesture was accentuated by the scars that rendered his face somewhat lopsided. He still came halfway up your torso, even like this.

You threaded your fingers through his shaggy mane on the top of his head and he started to purr almost instantly. He leaned into your touch as he had done the night before, pressing his cheek against your palm.

You sank onto the small sofa in your room, and he pressed your thighs open so that he could put his chest between your legs and rest his face in your lap. He still kept the left side towards you, the right with its long-healed, leathery scars concealed. His tail was working idly behind him, back and forth and occasionally wrapping itself idly around his own ankle, as though for something to do with it. He was still purring. “Your touch,” he whispered after a while, a shiver running through his whole body.

You smiled. “Has anyone ever touched you like this before?” you asked him.

Again, he shook his head.

“Never hooked up with another gargoyle from the other side of the cathedral?” you asked playfully.

He snorted a laugh and looked up at you with eyes that glowed like the embers of a campfire. “There’s never been anyone.”

“Wait,” you breathed. “The cathedral is, what, early fourteenth century?”

He stared at you and took a steady breath.

“Were you part of the original design?”

“I was added during the nineteenth century craze for all things gothic,” he said. “I’m old, but I’m not that old.”

“But still, you’ve never been with anyone?”

He shook his head and sat back suddenly on his haunches. “Does that bother you? Did I not please you last night?”

“Oh, Alesh, no, that’s not it at all! You definitely did please me. You were incredible. I’ve never come like that before. No one has ever –” You broke off as an image of your ex flashed across your memory.

His paw came down gently on your thigh, the lethal talons resting idle. He made a noise in his throat and chest, a curious kind of chuffing sound, and you looked up at him. Still with his face half turned away, he managed to look you straight in the eye.

You sighed, trying to relax. You reached your hands out and cupped both sides of his face in your palms. He closed his eyes, as though steeling himself to let you see him properly, and as your fingertips fluttered down to rest on the puckered scars of his face, he shuddered.

You leaned forward in your seat and planted a kiss on the unbelievably soft skin of his muzzle. A tremulous gasp left him then. You ran your finger along the fangs that protruded from his upper jaw. The one on his right side was a little chipped. You kissed his delicate, scarred muzzle again and again, over and over until he was shaking so hard you thought he might just collapse.

“Please,” he rasped. “I… It’s too much… I can’t…”

Glancing down, you saw that his cock had unsheathed itself, and was standing erect, pre-come already beading on the red tip and rolling down its ridged length to slide over his balls.

“You’re so sensitive, Alesh,” you murmured. You ran your thumb over the ear that twitched every so often, sitting just below his left horn. Since his right ear was also missing, you wondered if it affected his hearing. He had been lucky not to lose his right eye as well in the bombing. His left ear, you discovered, was also immensely sensitive.

Gasping as you drove him rapidly almost to the edge just by playing with him, he rolled suddenly over onto his back on the floor, exposing himself at your feet, eyes closed, long body stretching away from you. His hard cock bounced against his abdomen, printing a pearly spot onto his abs. He was clearly so hard that he could barely think straight. His lips drew back and he began to snarl softly, tongue working behind his teeth as he tried not to drool out of the right side of his mouth.

“You’re so beautiful,” you smiled, sinking onto your knees on the floor beside him and stroking his hard chest and chiselled stomach. One leg began to twitch a little, taloned toes curling, and you sank your teeth into your lip to keep from smiling too broadly. He was gone. So beautifully gone.

Late one Saturday afternoon, you decided to walk into the village to post a letter that you’d hung onto for far too long through sheer laziness. As your route took you past the local church, you glimpsed a shape on the roof that you’d never noticed before. The church had one or two finely carved gargoyles and grotesques dotted about it, so you assumed it was just one of those which had never caught your eye before then. Maybe they moved around too when the sun set…? They would never be like Alesh to you though, even if you could find the courage to introduce yourself at some point.

As you stared up at it, the sinking sun caught what was visible of the sculpture from behind, throwing it into harsh and yet shapeless relief, and the memory of Alesh on his plinth speared once again into your mind. You looked away, forcing yourself to walk on into the village via the post box, and to focus on something other than the searing ache in your chest.

Idly picking up a newspaper as you browsed in the village shop, your eye was instantly drawn to an article on the apparent theft of a cathedral sculpture which had been heavily damaged during the war. Your heart slid sideways in your chest. That had to be Alesh. Who would steal him? And how? Your eyes scanned the article; it seemed that the authorities and the cathedral staff were baffled as to how such a heavy sculpture could have been removed without anyone seeing.

At that, your brain began to work.

Had he left? Could he even leave? Didn’t he have to be back on holy ground to recharge, otherwise he could crumble away to nothing? Holy ground. Like a church…

You turned on the spot, dropping the newspaper back into the pile and racing out of the shop without buying anything. Sweat rolled down between your shoulder blades by the time you reached the parish church, and you barely dared breathe, let alone hope, as you stared up at the leaded roof behind the crenellations. Sunset was possibly still an hour way.

You paced.

You walked the graveyard, trailing along the rows of headstones, reading every name but never remembering it for long. You kept staring up at the roof line where you could barely see the figure of what looked - at least to your delirious thinking - like a gargoyle, sitting half crouched behind the row of crenellations which jutted up along the top of the walls of the parish church. It was simply impossible to tell if it was him or not, and as the daylight faded with the tantalising slowness of sand through a watched hourglass, your agitation became unbearable. If it turned out to be a discarded bucket or something, your disappointment would be crushing.

Finally, with the lengthening shadows, the chill of evening started to seep into you and you found yourself standing under an oak tree, shaking with anticipation and wild hope. Could it be him? How had he found you? Surely you were more than a day’s flight from the cathedral? Was he alright? Was it even him?

Eventually the sun sank behind the hills and you couldn’t stand the tension any longer. “Alesh?” you called into the empty evening air. “Fuck, if that’s you, please try to hurry!”

A minute or so later, a face appeared above the crenellation and you gasped as huge wings spread wide behind them. A familiar silhouette, barely visible, of one horn and a stump on the other side, was all you needed to see to know it was him.

“Alesh!”

He glanced around and then hurled himself down, soaring on stiff, leathery wings. He landed right in front of you and staggered slightly with the force of his impact. He reared up onto his hind legs, barrelling into you hard enough to drive the air from your lungs, and swept you into his chilly embrace. “I missed you so much,” he whimpered, enfolding you tightly in his wings and pressing his scarred face against the side of your head.

“I can’t believe you’re here!” you whimpered, still crushed by his embrace. “Alesh, they’ve noticed you’re gone,” you said as you hugged his slim waist and inhaled the beautiful, mossy scent of his skin.

“Really?” He seemed genuinely surprised at that and shifted his face a little. “Ha, well, that’ll give them something to chew on I suppose! How are you? Are you well?”

“How did you find me?” you asked in astonishment.

“I looked for weeks for a village fitting the description…” he said, sitting back on his haunches like a tired hunting dog and smiling up at you. His familiar, weathered, puckered, scarred face sparked such intense joy in you that you simply burst into tears. “Oh, don’t cry,” he said. “Did I do the wrong thing? Should I not have looked for you?”

“How long can you stay?” you asked through your sobs of relief and happiness.

He shrugged. “I can rest on this roof, I suppose, or on the hallowed ground of the graveyard somewhere in the bushes, so… indefinitely…?”

“You’d… You’d leave your cathedral? For me?”

Alesh nodded. “I already did,” he grinned.

You sat with him in the churchyard until it was full dark, telling him about what you’d been up to since you’d left the city. It couldn’t have been very interesting for him, but he listened attentively nonetheless, happy to be with you and purring softly like an idling motorbike.

Gradually he got closer and closer to you, stealing little nuzzled kisses against your neck as you spoke, and as his attentions grew more heated, you felt your own body reacting. The scrape of his teeth as he opened his jaw and gently mouthed your entire neck made you whimper, and you finally hissed, “Not here…”

“Where then?” he said. “I’m aching for you… though I’m not sure how far I can fly now like this…”

QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?

my favorite scene is the scene where inada gives yukina the journals, but only on a second reading. "hey tante, can you help me research-" "what's that? you wanted my sister's diary? you wanted my big sister's deepest, darkest secrets? you wanted to learn the most intimate details of your mothers' lives? that's what you wanted?"

Ah, yes. Chapter 5 was when Leigh started putting in her two cents more into the story. I don't recall who came up with the exact direction there BUT that was a good one. It kinda encompasses Raison's story style as a whole - can get serious but then it has its comedic moments just kinda "whoop!" right back

I'm pretty bad for being able to figure out relationships unless they're spelled out in black and white myself. Even the big reveal of "Kaa-san", I don't remember how long it took until I clued in to there being two mothers.

QUESTION 2. Throughout the comic, we continually see the appearance of Kregor who is out to cause a lot of harm at the behest of his boss, Lady Elianne. What do you think is so special about Sachiko’s blood? Does it have something to do with Allie or is something else afoot? Why do you think Lady Elianne targets Sachiko specifically and not anyone else in her family? Do you think Lady Elianne will ultimately succeed, or will everyone be able to stop her? Who even is Lady Elianne? Outside of Sachiko, Kregor also hunts Yukina’s friend Rie at the behest of the Tanuki Brothers. Do you think the initial failure will deter Kregor from trying again? If Kregor doesn’t try again, do you believe the Tanuki Brothers will leave Rie alone? If Kregor does try again, will he succeed or will something else stop him?

I had a great week. An important part of GUI Sessions is overhauled, which should save a lot of hard drive time for larger clients.

gui sessions

I always encourage a backup before you update, but this week it matters more than normal. If you have a client with large sessions with many important things set up, make sure you have a backup done before you update! I feel good about the code, and I try to save data on various failures, but if your situation gives errors for an unforeseen reason, having the backup ready reduces headaches all around!

Like the subscriptions and network objects breakups I've done in the past year, I 'broke up' the monolithic GUI Session object this week. Now, when your session has changes, only those pages that have changed will be saved, saving a ton of CPU and HDD write I/O. Furthermore, sessions that share duplicate pages (this happens all the time with session backups), can now share that stored page, saving a bunch of hard drive space too. Like with subscriptions, some users are pushing multiple gigabytes of session storage total, so there is a good amount of work to save here.

You don't have to do anything here. Everything works the same on the front end, and all your existing sessions will be converted on update. Your client should be a little less laggy at times, and client shutdown should be a bit faster.

If any of your old sessions fail to load or convert, a backup will be made so we can check it out later. Let me know if you have any trouble!

Advanced stuff:

Another benefit is the old limit of 'sessions fail to save at about 500k session weight' now applies to pages individually. Please don't immediately try to nuke your sessions with five million new things, but if you do end up with a big session, let me know how other performance works out for you. Now this bottleneck is gone, we'll start hitting new ones. I believe the next biggest vulnerability is thread starvation with many simultaneous downloaders, so again please don't paste-spam a hundred now queries (for now).

If you have been tracking session weight (under the pages menu), I am rebalancing the weights. Before, the weight was file = 1, URL = 1, but after all our research into this, I am setting it to file = 1, URL = 20. In general, I think a page will fail to save at the new weight of about 10 million. If you are in advanced mode, you can now see each page's weight on page tab right-clicks. Let's get a new feeling for IRL distribution here, and we can aim for the next optimisation (I suspect it'll eventually be a downloader-page breakup, storing every query or watcher as a separate object). Since URLs seem to be the real killer, too, see if you can spread bigger downloads across multiple download pages and try to clear out larger completed queries when you can.

I have also turned off the interval VACUUM maintenance and hidden the manual task for now. This was proving less and less useful in these days of huge database files, so I will bring it back in future on a per-file basis with some UI and more specific database metadata.

EDIT: Thanks to a user submission, yande.re post parser is updated to pull tags correctly if you are logged in. I hoped my update code would move the link over from the old parser correct, but it did not. I'll fix this for next week, but if you download from yande.re while logged in, please hit ''network->downloader components->manage url class links'' and move 'yande.re file page' from moebooru to 'yande.re post page parser'.

We fixed a couple more problems with the new builds--the Linux and Windows extract builds have their surplus 'ubuntu'/'windows' directories removed, and the Linux executables should have correct permissions again. Sorry for the trouble!

And after some tests, we removed the .py files and the source from the builds. I long-believed it was possible to run the program from source beside the executables, but it seems I was mistaken. Unless you are running the build-adjacent source pretty much on the same machine you built on (as my tests years ago were), you get dll conflicts all over the place. If you want to run from source, just extract the source proper in its own fresh directory. I've also fleshed out the 'running from source' help beyond setting up the environment to talk more about the actual downloading and running of the program. I'll continue work here and hope to roll out some easy one-and-done setup scripts to automate the whole thing.

gui sessions:

gui sessions are no longer a monolithic object! now, each page is stored in the database separately, and when a session saves, only those pages that have had changes since the last save are written to db. this will massively reduce long-term HDD writes for clients with large sessions and generally reduce lag during session save intervals

the new gui sessions are resilient against database damage--if a page fails to load, or is missing from the new store, its information will be recorded and saved, but the rest of the session will load

the new page storage can now be shared across sessions. multiple backups of a session that use the same page now point to the same record, which massively reduces the size of client.db for large-sessioned clients

your existing sessions and their backups will obviously be converted to the new system on update. if any fail to load or convert, a backup of the original object will be written to your database directory. the conversion shouldn't take more than a minute or two

the old max-object limit at which a session would fail to save was around 10M files and/or 500k urls total. it equated to a saved object of larger than 1Gb, which hit an internal SQLite limit. sessions overall now have no storage limit, but individual pages now inherit the old limit. Please do not hurry to try to test this out with giganto pages. if you want to make do a heap of large long-term downloaders, please spread the job across several pages

it seems URLs were the real killer here, so I am rebalancing it so URLs now count for 20 weight each. the weight limit at which point a _page_ will now fail to save, and the client will start generally moaning at you for the whole session (which can be turned off in the options), is therefore raised to 10M. most of the checks are still session-wide for now, but I will do more work here in future

if you are in advanced mode, then each page now gives its weight (including combined weight for 'page of pages') from its tab right-click menu. with the new URL weight, let's get a new sense of where the memory is actually hanging around IRL

the page and session objects are now more healthily plugged into my serialisation system, so it should be much easier to update them in future (e.g. adding memory for tag sort or current file selection)

the rest:

when subscriptions die, the little reporting popup now includes the death file velocity ('it found fewer than 1 files in the last 90 days' etc...)

the client no longer does vacuums automatically in idle time, and the soft/full maintenance action is removed. as average database size has grown, this old maintenance function has increasingly proved more trouble than it is worth. it will return in future as a per-file thing, with better information to the user on past vacuums and empty pages and estimates on duration to completion, and perhaps some database interrupt tech so it can be cancelled. if you really want to do a vacuum for now, do it outside the program through a SQLite intepreter on the files separately

thanks to a user submission, a yande.re post parser is added that should grab tags correct if you are logged in. the existing moebooru post parser default has its yande.re example url removed, so the url_class-parser link should move over on update

for file repositories, the client will not try to sync thumbnails until the repository store counts as 'caught up' (on a busy repo, it was trying to pull thumbs that had been deleted 'in the future'). furthermore, a 404 error due a thumb being pulled out of sync will no longer print a load of error info to the log. more work will be needed here in future

some maintenance-triggered file delete actions are now better about saving a good attached file delition reason

when the file maintenance manager does a popup with a lot of thumbnail or file integrity checks, the 'num thumbs regenned/files missing or invalid' number is now preserved through the batches of 256 jobs

thoroughly tested and brushed up the 'check for missing/invalid files' maintenance code, particularly in relation to its automatic triggering after a repository processing problem, but I still could not figure out specifically why it is not working for some users. we will have to investigate and try some more things

fixed a typo in client api help regarding the 'service_names_to_statuses_to_display_tags' variable name (I had 'displayed' before, which is incorrect)

build fixes:

since I fixed the urllib3 problem we had with serialised sessions and Retry objects, I removed it from the requirements.txts. now 'requests' can pull what it likes

after testing it with the new build, it looks like I was mistaken years ago that anyone could run hydrus from source when inside a 'built' release (due to dll conflicts in CWD vs your python install). maybe this is now only true in py3 where dll loading is a little different, but it was likely always true and my old tests only ever worked because I was in the same/so-similar environment so the dlls were not conflicting. in any case the builds no longer include the .py/.pyw files and the 'hydrus' source folder, since it just doesn't seem to work. if you want to run from source, grab the actual source release in a fresh, non-conflicting directory. I've updated the help regarding this, sorry for any trouble or confusion you have ever run into here

updated the running from source document to talk more about actually getting the source and fleshed out the info about running the scripts

misc boring refactoring and db updates:

created a new 'pages' gui module and moved Pages, Thumbs, Sort/Collect widgets, Management panel, and the new split Session code into it

wrote new container objects for sessions, notebook pages, and media pages, and wrote a new hash-based data object for a media page's management info and file list

added a table to the database for storing serialised objects by their hash, and updated the load/save code to work with the new session objects and manage shared page data in the hashed storage

a new maintenance routine checks which hashed serialisables are still needed by master containers and deletes the orphans. it can be manually fired from the _database->maintenance_ menu. this routine otherwise runs just after boot and then every 24 hours or every 512MB of new hashed serialisables added, whichever comes first

management controllers now discard the random per-session 'page key' from their serialised key lookup, meaning they serialise the same across sessions (making the above hash-page stuff work better!)

7595 — Thoughts after having a migraine and inexplicably watching a thirty minute video on music theory

I found myself googling in a half awake state why is x so pretentious, and then I stopped myself because I couldn’t all the way remember what I was thinking about, but then of course realized: everything is pretentious! I have this great realization now, which I’m glad my migraine introspection has led me to (as it always does). I started off in school and had done well in mathematics and sciences, and always pictured going there, and then went elsewhere in my stint in college because I thought it was too pretentious. So I went to arts and political sciences, and quickly found that very pretentious as well. I patented things — which I , ironically, considering it’s the only most real thing — found to be the least pretentious, but this naturally led to putting the idea into practice in business. Surely, I thought, here, this one could not be pretentious, because it was putting things into practice. And I was dead wrong! The business heavyweights — the banks and so forth that you need to interact with — are deadly pretentious! Why the hell are people making thirty minute video breakdowns of having to do things properly, when they’ve never done the thing! I know I often take part in criticism — I love talking about movies, for instance — but I always think it is interesting to understand why or why not I like something, in the preparation for me to make my movies. When people say, “I don’t like the Shining” (which is my favourite movie) I find myself often saying back, “I can understand why you wouldn’t.” I agree with most criticisms — it’s slow, uneventful, too building and drawn out. And I agree, I can see that, because I see those things and like them. And I know other people will see them and dislike them, but I watch the Shining and think so much about it to see what I like, so I can make things that I like, full well knowing that those things would not be liked by all people. In general, though, I think the criticism speaks to a focus of society that is inextricably linked to the pretensiousizing of all these things. This is something I have thought about a lot. As it becomes easier to do things, people make those things harder for themselves. My favourite example to think about is writing. Much of the great old writing or great old storytelling is not edited and typeset, it is what we would call today a rough first draft, simply because it survived. You sat down and wrote, maybe with some planning, but there was simply no ability to go down and tinker with each letter laboriously and forwardly, over and over and over, like we have today with word processors. What an ugly word: a word processor. You’re grinding it up like mincemeat in some silver mechanical lair. What we have of these great thinkers is not polished like we have today, it is just what survived. And it makes sense that they did not have a need to polish it: there was not the same competition, not the same effort and time to be allowed to be spend on competition and critical tearing down. Most people were not thought workers. Most people for most of history (since farming) were farmers! When you had time to write a story or read one, that was a great treat. And we went at it like children, thinking full and pure. Now, we have not the need but the absolute luxury, the awful laborious mind-numbing and -eating luxury to tinker. The sheer time we’e technologically procured for ourselves as a joint species has allowed for onward explosive creation, but that is not how we have used it. We have used it for what it has also allowed for, the entire tinkering professions: the critics and editors and armies of bureaucrats. But in all of that a great, great many things are lost. I don’t believe in art schools and theory classes, because I think it presents a fundamental misuse of how we are discovering and know more and more our mind to work. I subscribe to the subconscious, and therefore, to our relatively slight and pale-some ability to make something better by thinking about it. Most people attack everything like this. They do only by thinking — scrunching the tip of their eyebrows while they put down a few words or a few brushstrokes. This has been the latter dictating the former: with such newfound capacity to be prolific, people and industry are afraid of it, and want to artificially limit their own output once they can have a lot of it to slow down the already increasing competition, only identified and labelled as such because everybody is still set on going about doing the same things as everyone else and not being themselves. There is this false myth of a solitary genius executing a few things, of many educated minds working in tandem in a staircase. If you look at the developments which really change things, and the people behind them, you see this is nothing of the sort. The few people behind the many great ideas are maniacally prolific; not a few novels but dozens of books, millions of words, a cascade of stories or paintings or inventions. Yes, even in scientific discovery, most of the great changes are made in multiple by a few people, because those very people set and destined to make them have minds buzzing constantly. That’s why Tesla singlehandedly makes the first draft of the entire electric grid! Most of the people bearing the society approved title of scientist today are lucky to transmit his designs to be a few percent more efficient, transmit a few kilometres farther, while they have literally ten times the scientific education, and a million times the knowledge base and tool capability that he had access to. People today are held back by barriers to stop our society from careening forward, a chief one being their own (in-bred) tepid nature. The best things I’ve done I haven’t thought about. I am the happiest with the stories I have simply sat down and zapped out onto paper. Even ideas and inventions: you cannot explain, fully, an idea, even to yourself, when it is just a seed. You can only see it vaguely, work with it, and get a feeling for its potential. My best ideas come to me in a flash, and I have to play with them — without the intruding critical eyes, which would always tell you to stop, to not reinvent the wheel — before I show them polished enough for anybody else to even see, remotely, what I mean. This is the great downfall of data itself. You cannot collect data on something which does not exist; so the new idea is always at a loss, and the old one always has a great supposed amount of suppository proof, always measured with what we were measuring then. You scrunch up your face to posture as smart and you start to lose your mind. You crumple up your head into nothing more than a paper wrapper, a piece of garbage. We now know that the subconscious brain processes of which we are not aware take up much more energy than our conscious processes, that most of the things we notice we do not notice that we notice, and that most of our judgements and thoughts we arrive at without much of our conscious input at all. Why fight it? The best we can do with the consciousness is to steer the ship. That is why I focus care on what I am paying attention to, and let my intuition take me the rest of the way. You are not a captain of a ship so much as a nudge at the rudder, or, more astutely, the tender to a garden. Your mind is your garden, and you only have certain limited controls of what you can do to it to yield results. Water it right. Feed it, care for it, right. If you think without feeling — without being propelled by that vast subconscious sense — you’re using your brain wrong, or, at the very least, incompletely. Trying to laboriously think through a task is using only the pin prick of your brain focused back and between your eyes. It is like trying to write a novel on a typewriter with one key. We have, in trying to quantify and subjugate, denied the vast spectrum of human intelligence. And I believe that this was done at least partially intentionally, to accommodate the great proliferation of fake fields at which people can ‘earn a living’ while contributing nothing of real value. Society has not economically figured out how to delegate the so much we have been able to procure with the so little in the normal job making system, so we have to keep people employed while dampening the acceleration of production and reorganization output with minimal input. Hence drafts, editing, critique, gatekeepers. You go back further, and there is less specialization, but people making greater breakthroughs, because they are omni present in all fields; in the only field: nature. You go back and nuclear physicist becomes physicist. You go back further and it becomes scientist. You go back further and it becomes, only, thinker — which most of the people would have considered themselves. Our today labelling of them as scientists or whatever else is propaganda designed to sell books and University courses. It is not that we are so advanced that we have neared perfection. We are nowhere near it, we are barely into the mix. Look at what we have done in the last few hundred years? And still: we barely have indoor plumbing and our designs now back up and overflow. We still have not solved adequately many of our base problems. We are not at the polishing stages to demand little change, to demand little changes and small build up and shavings! We are at the very beginning! Every society at every point we have known in history has said “Thank god we have it all right now.” It depresses me immensely to see such fakery everywhere; to see artists talking about their subtextual post Neo whatever practice instead of doing and thinking. Buckminster Fuller used to say, in many cultures they had no difference in words for sculptor and inventor. Why do we now? All of these things are inter-accommodative; nothing exists in a vacuum. These great people are and were able to make great leaps because understanding and natural law and imagination — the very fundamental components of the universe — do not delineate themselves based on fields. When everything is inter-accomodative it is also inter-applicable. Expertise is a sham. We all have the same amount of ex-perience directed in our own unique life path based where our consciousness is and was pointing. We are all experts in our own experience. I am drawn by immense power and posses great inspiration to know, for example, how terrible our toilets are; how laborious and how many steps it takes to cast and prototype an object, to sculpt it, in a foundry, say. How primitive our brick buildings are, cured out of rock drilled out of the ground. Everybody is patting themselves on the back with theory and titles while we see so clearly around us in so many places, everyday, such staggering primitivities. There is work to be done! Subconscious is not not thinking, it is deep thinking. This is also why I am cripplingly opposed to most of the insane and baseless debate in critique and analysis videos on intention. If it is functional, to help one forwardly build something better, intentional or not should not matter. And, we can do things without having a full reasoning-out pre-done ourselves. Many of the great thinkers have recognized this, and I have stollen it from them. Ray Bradbury and Dali both talk about the importance of mistakes; of keeping mistakes. As Dali said, they are of a divine subliminal nature. Bradbury would start his stories by typing the first things to come to mind, then asking himself: Why have I put that there? So in ways you pour things out without realizing, and then realize part way through and work with it for the rest of the pouring. Is it intentional and is it planned may be impossible to answer. Whatever I put down, even if I am not aware of thinking about it, I have thought about since I put it down. You also work with it. You notice things; the fact that you’ve put it down and then it jumps off the page back at you reaffirms two-fold that it is important. Often I start pouring out, and from there find a theme simply by noticing: isn’t it interesting that I said this? Then I reaffirm it and be sure to work it in. It’s working with yourself. I have been on the set of movies that I have (tried to) make, and had ideas — what if we put this in the background, what if we play with this? You think about that all the time with stories. Inventing is the same way. It is a push and pull of leading yourself without knowing where you’re going (but of course, at some level, you must). In a dream, you talk to yourself; every character you get information from, while it is still new to you at the conscious level, is still you. I guess the best way to say it is that the subconscious you, the unknown you, is doing the real work; the conscious you is just trying to keep up and articulate it, and pointing the energy and the machine at what it is to be looking at.

My very first vegan Instant Pot recipe is here! I finally took the plunge and purchased an Instant Pot after being on the fence about whether I wanted a new appliance to take up real estate on my counter( it would have to fight for space next to the kids’ pilings of artwork, after all ). Thanks again for the Ask Angela weigh-in back in February. I’m usually suspicious of new trends and like to wait a good while before I take the plunge, but I’m loooving it so far. I had totally underestimated how nice it is to put the lid on a recipe and walk away! But this same convenient feature also constructs it challenging to develop recipes because you have ONE SHOT to get the cook time/ pressure correct. No big deal. This curry took over 10 trials to get perfect…I altered up the flavours, cook day( 6 minutes, 5 minutes, 1 minute, 4 minutes … ahh !), liquids-to-solids ratios…you name it, I tweaked it! Nicole and I love a challenge, though, so it’s been fun figuring it out and I do think we’ll get quicker as we go.

I had a stovetop pressure cooker back in the day and that thing used to scare the bejesus out of me with all of its rattling and clanking around. So the first two times I cooked with my new Instant Pot, I handed Eric a wooden spoonful and informed him to release the steam while I concealed. I’m not proud, but hey, at least I’m now doing it myself! It’s genuinely not that bad at all, and it feels so much safer than my old stovetop pressure cooker ever did.

Don’t worry if you don’t have an Instant Pot, though! I get yo’ back. We’ve tested this curry on the stovetop as well because I want everyone to be able to make these easy recipes at home! I haven’t had a chance to test this curry in a slow cooker yet, but if any of you do, could you please leave a comment and let us know how it goes? The beauty of this curry is that you literally throw everything( except the greens) into a pot, stir it, and cook. It couldn’t be easier! Of course, I wouldn’t call this an authentic Thai curry by any means, but it’s delicious and comes together speedily on those busy weeknights.

Instant Pot Cauliflower Thai Curry

Vegan, gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, refined sugar-free, soy-free

I love the soft, stew-like texture of this spicy curry and how serving it over a beaker of fluffy rice lends just the right amount of chewiness! This dish is one of those crave-worthy comfort foods that I reach for again and again. I made this recipe out of a need for more go-to pantry dinner alternatives that take advantage of my speedy new Instant Pot electric pressure cooker. Not to worry if you don’t have one, though–follow my directions in the tip below to make this curry on the stovetop instead. It’s important to follow the Instant Pot directions carefully to avoid overcooking the veggies. This recipe’s directions( steps 1 and 2) have been lightly edited as of January 10, 2018 to avoid some machines get a burn notice. This recipe is adapted from my 8-Minute Pantry Dal.

Ingredients:

For the curry: 1 tablespoon( 15 mL) extra-virgin olive oil1( 14 -ounce/ 398 mL) can illuminate coconut milk1( 14 -ounce/ 398 mL) can diced tomatoes, with juices* 2 beakers( 260 g) chopped cauliflower florets( 1-inch pieces) 2 beakers( 340 g) peeled and cubed( 3/4 -inch) butternut squash2 tablespoons( 30 mL) red curry paste ** 1 teaspoon( 7.5 mL) dried flaked onion *** 1/2 teaspoon( 2.5 mL) garlic powder3/ 4 teaspoon fine ocean salt, or to taste1/ 4 teaspoon cayenne pepperLots of freshly ground black pepper, to taste1/ 2 cup( 100 g) uncooked red lentils2 cups( 75 g) packed stemmed and finely chopped kale or chardServing suggestions: Cooked jasmine rice or grain of choiceFresh chopped cilantro leavesFresh lime juice

Directions:

Add all of the curry ingredients( except the red lentils and kale/ chard) to the Instant Pot and stir until blended. Add the red lentils on top of the concoction and gently press them into the liquid( do not stir the lentils into the mixture as this can result in a burn notification in some machines ). Secure lid in the lock position and check that the Steam Release Handle is pointing to the “Sealing” position. Press the “Pressure Cook” button( or “Manual”, on some machines) and situated the cook time to 5 minutes on high pressure. After five seconds you’ll hear a couple beeps and the screen will say “on”. The cook process has begun! You can now run do something fun for about 10 to 15 minutes while the curry cooks. You’ll hear a few beeps when the timer is up. Immediately do a “Quick Pressure Release” to avoid overcooking the curry. I stand back and use a wooden spoon handle( never my hands !) to shift the Steam Release Handle to the “Venting” position to release the pressure. Once all of the pressure has been released, the float valve will sink and you won’t hear steam anymore. Carefully open the lid and stir the curry. To achieve a thicker texture, I like to mash a bit of the curry with a potato masher, simply pulsing about 4 or 5 times around the pot. You can also blitz it for a second or two with an submersion blender. Stir in the chopped greens until exhaustively blended and secure the eyelid. Set the Instant Pot to the “Keep Warm” set and allow the greens to wilt for about 5 minutes in the curry. Press “Cancel” to turn the hot off and release the steam again, if there is reason, before removing the lid. Serve over rice or grain of option, if desired, and garnish with cilantro and lime. The lime juice dedicates it a lovely brightness, but avoid utilizing too much as it can overpower. I always add a sprinkle of salt and pepper before serving too.

Tips:

* The canned diced tomatoes that I use are quite “soupy” and liquid-y. If your can seems to be on the low end of the liquid content, I would recommend adding a 1/2 beaker of water to this recipe before cooking.

** I love this Thai Kitchen Red Curry Paste–it’s shelf stable and comes in a small glass jar. You can often find it in the international cuisine aisle of grocery chains.

*** Dried flaked onion is less concentrated than onion powder. Onion powder will work as a substitute if that’s what you have on hand, but I would suggest utilizing a smaller amount( around 1/2 teaspoon) as it’s more flavourful.

STOVETOP OPTION: Not to worry if you don’t have an Instant Pot as this recipe runs great on the stovetop too. Simply add all of the ingredients except the kale( or chard, if utilizing) to a large pot, stir, and bring to a low boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the hot to medium-low and simmer, encompassed, for 25 to 35 minutes( adding the kale/ chard during the last 10 minutes ), until the veggies and lentils are tender. Stir the curry every 5 minutes while cook, and reduce the hot if necessary to prevent it sticking to the pot. Follow directions# 5 and# 7.

Note: Cauliflower amount has been changed from 2 1/2 beakers to 2 cups as of Sept. 25/18.

Overview Of Project - The Knitted Monster

So basically my idea all started from way back in August, when I took a trip to New York and stumbled across an exhibition (where sadly I couldn't take any photos) of Lolita Outfits. These pastelic outfits, girly dresses and angelic style instantly got me hooked.

Come October and I'm back at uni and these obsession with this controversial style was banging in my head. I knew that this was what I had to do for my project. It was something I had to produce or even just to be inspired by.

So since October I have had a consistent idea of what I want to achieve. I knew that I wanted to be inspired by the Lolita fashion, by using its overly cute aesthetic, colour scheme and bold look.

I originally made a pink lightweight kimono jacket that came to my waist (all measurements based off my proportions due to having no mannequin at the time). I got the pattern from a burda sewing pattern book, and the did make a puffy knitted belt where the pattern was found in rowan knit book.

After viewing it I felt it was too average and that I was just simply re-creating a Lolita outfit rather then pulling it apart drastically. So I carried on knitting small patches, (at this point it was the end of October) I almost covered the small jacket. Then after chatting to staff I decided to just go more bold and knit big kimono style sleeves (This was done because some Lolitas where traditional Japanese clothing but lolitify it as I mention in a older post). After enjoying this huge challenge of making knitted patches I decided that I must extend the jacket to the floor. My thinking behind this is because Lolitas have created a rule book on the do’s and dont’s in the Lolita community commonly known as the Lolita Bible. The book addresses the appropriate length of skirt and how much lace is allowed. One word that caught my eye was Monster. This word was given out if your outfit was just dreadful and shouldn't be seen in public. That was when I knew I must create a completely over exaggerated Lolitas outfit this exaggerates it's Victorian, Roccoco and Meiji era influences.

From November onwards till May the 28th I did not stop making knitted patches, lace, beadword, buttons, sequins, layered fabric, shoulder pads, layered you name it any knitting style, any yarn type from mohair to plastic was intertwined into this monster of a garment. I honestly have not stopped working. This without a doubt has been the most hardwork I have ever put into anything. Every minute I had I either had needles in my handles or cutting fabric and plastic to make my own yarn. I could see the end result since Novemeber and I was willing to change my mind. I have done nothing but been determined to get this done.

Everytime I made a couple of bags full of knitted patches I would sew them onto the garment. Thankfully Paula in the new year gave me her mannequin with arms so i finally had something to work from instead of guess work, lying it on the floor or even wearing it and pinning pieces to my body.

There have been times where I have been sick of wool and times where I can't wait to start a new ball of wool. I purchased the majority of my wool from a wholesaler called ice yarns. The rest were wool we already had a home, because my mom used to sell knitted toys on her Facebook.

There have been times as well where I felt like there could have been more frequent days when I could see my tutors. Sometimes I felt like I was repeating myself because they forgot my work. Also I felt I was repeating my research to them and when they say oh that looks Victorian and I would reply yes I have told you that two weeks ago Lolita is inspired by that. So it felt like I was two steps forward one step back with them at times.

There was a time when myself and Paula booked a time slot for the photography suite and only until the morning did we get an email it was cancelled when we was already packed and ready to go. This laziness and slow mindset was such a throw back. I also felt frustrated that my day was wasted due to slow communication, no cover staff, limited staff and limited resources. Not only do I feel that but the was of booking the computer suite seriously needs to be addressed. Such as there needs to be more then one member of staff to assistant students with it seeing as it is something nearly every student in the school will might have to use at some point. There needs to be a better booking such as in order for me to book the suite I have to book the time slot for the room which is fair enough, but on top of that I have to seperartly book equipment such as lights and cameras and then lastly book the one member of staffs help who also helps in the editing suite. Perhap as a easier route I'd suggest having one booking system where you ask for the rook and if you require the equipment and staff that should be two tick boxes and that's it. Otherwise you can end up messing up dates which is just over complicated and confusing.

Also throughout my time there i wish there was more members of staff who were insterested in the textiles and craft side. Yes I do understand there is a small textile studio in the main building and another large fashion design school down at park side. However I did have an induction to use the equipment but because I am from art and design they never got back to me on dates when I go use the new and different equipment. The environment never felt comfortable, when telling staff I wanted to sew into wool she simply said you can't do that in the fashion room but only in the textiles department. So again I wasted a day having an induction on machines that I can't even use due to my material when I said from the start I'm interested in textiles rather then womenswear. So I contacted about using the Cad machines and the knitting machines and nobody got back In touch. So I gave up asking (3 times) and carried on doing what I can. Again the response time to emails is just appalling at times and very off putting. Back to wishing there was more members of staff who had knowledge on the crafts, the two members of staff who do have similar understanding ownly came in now and then and my main staff member had a better eye for product design. I felt like there wasn't anybody I could talk to for advice. I again even emailed knitting members of staff who teach at park side but again no reply.

I then put all that frustration behind me and made sure I made as much as I could for the work in progress show. This show, enabled me to see I needed to go longer and more extreme. I needed to think how to display.

When the show was over I had chats with my tutor about display. The original idea was to create a design that could be made for me. However I decided to over the Easter to give a go at making my own.

I bought from home base my materials and set to work. My grandad who is a carpenter made my design. So I credit the design and the making to him. I documented the stages he took to make it through notes and images (All described on earlier post).

The design has many flaws such as the arms was not right and too stiff, and the base was very delicate. When bringing in my display and garment and placing it in the room I instantly knew that it was incorrect. It did get me upset because I was determined that it was right and it couldn't not be fixed. However thanks to my tutors addressing the situation a better design outcome was possible (again thanks to the help of my grandad who built and designed the new design) even though I was incredibly frustrated with myself and my work I calmed myself down a reassessed my situation.

I would also like to mention that massive and amazing help my mom has given me throughout this project, she helped knit some patches when she felt I was running out of time, she helped to stitch and pin whenever she had time off. She has helped to carry work to and from home and uni. She also came to my uni several times to help layout work and present my ideas. My project was a lot to take on, it could have been done single handed however there was times when I did need that extra push.

Oh before I forget to mention there was one time when a design display idea just did not work was the hooped skirted, I really do wish that did work out I had in mind but the hoops were too big and pulled the wool in was that didn't compliment it.

I have used over 200 balls of wool, 9 bags of sequins, 11 bags of beads, 5 tubs of buttons, 8 bags of lace, 1 machine thread, over 100 pins, used 12 different pairs of needles, 20 plastic bags, 1 single bedsheet and two matching pillow cases, 1 double bedsheet, 2 homemade shoulder pads, 5 metres of wadding, a bag of teddy bear stuffing, 4 bags of decorative butterfly pins, and much much more.

Overall I feel I have achieved what wanted to. I'm proud of how much I have made, and the skills I have used. I wish my display would have been adjusted but my skills are lacking info that area. Knitting is certainly without a doubt something I wish to push and peruse in the future.
