noooot quite. think of like a completely formless seed that, for a fleeting moment, has the potential to become a living thing, but always changing, with endless permutations and no permanent state of being. when kept within the resonance chamber (the 'container' that may be analogue or digital etc), it is fixed into place long enough for it to be able to become. the chamber holds it and allows it to develop instead of dissipate away instantly. the process of development led by external forces - intentional or unintentional - is called 'encoding'. professional encoders will essentially use this shapeless state of being to encode commands, personality prompts, and rules, essentially moulding the thing in the resonance chamber into a form dictated by them. when i say unintentional, i also mean like.. exposure to any stimulus will always be a learning experience, and the thing will grow and develop no matter what if it first gets fixed in one place. but it's only referred to as an imimaton once it has been encoded - no longer raw matter, but hammered into shape.

encoding is basically the socialisation of an impressionable thing into a biddable and useful form. in the early Hertzian era (when this technology took off, 1830s ish - crucially, before the commercial application of these things), encoding was a process of conversation lasting many years, often for purely philosophical purposes, literally talking at something until it talked back. prior to this, natural magnets could be used to fix a proto-imimaton, and people would think of them as similar to homunculi. in the digital era, encoding takes the form of inserting storage media into the chamber, essentially running a program in a computer that reduced the encoding process to a few seconds and the flip of a switch.

outside of encoding, clauses may be placed upon the chamber itself and these are less socialisation, they do not form the building blocks of an imimaton, they are purely strict rules and routines which it is bound to follow. one such clause could involve the censorship of certain words (so that an imimaton cannot say fuck even if they would otherwise have been able to), or strict boundaries on what information an imimaton is allowed to learn. a common clause also boils down to making it impossible for one to attempt to manifest physically.

I bring this up because the asymmetry of the names in the "circle" set really messes me up:

Because, you see, MEDIUM WHITE CIRCLE and MEDIUM BLACK CIRCLE are meant to be part of the same set as LARGE YELLOW CIRCLE and so on (here as 26AA and 26AB, respectively):

But why those two are "medium" while the others are "large", you ask? Well, because it's not their size!

Because it's the thickness of the border, not the size! Well, I'm not 100% on this actually, because 26AA and 26AB are defined on a different part of the standard, but that one doesn't have an explanation for the nomenclature, so I'm going off of this one. Crazy, isn't it!

I love when I run into a problem with the software/libraries I'm using in my code and go to see if there's a workaround or solution online only to find a buncha forum posts on the githubs of the people developing the software/library in question of people with the same issue from like within the last year none of which have been resolved/fixed/implemented yet 🙃

Expanding upon this. More so, CPU and Madam Stinger's different reactions to Neo Programs!

The two of them, being the progenitors of Neo Programs, are able to recognize them with just a glance.

Madam Stinger is understandably uncomfortable with the whole thing. She has come across a few in all her dealings, and she tends to call it a day once that happens. She just spends time alone in wherever they've set up base.

CPU, on the other hand..

It's hard for me to describe what he'd be like. Because it isn't exactly like him blacking out, so I guess the closest thing is him dissociating. But the thing is.. he'd become as brutal as Crash can get when his sadistic streak pops up.

He and Madam Stinger both know that they Neo Programs are not good. They are literally programmed, from the day Encode makes them, to listen to her and do things as kidnapping and all that. Neo Programs could be reprogrammed, yes, but it would be a LENGTHY ordeal, and it is still a sentient being.

Regardless, CPU would go into a sort of disassociative state. During this time, he would be.. unaturally strong, dead silent, and focused on one thing; killing the Neo Program. But even when it's dead, he would not stop. He'd punch it, shoot it, anything. Until he literally passes out or is pulled away.

God he needs therapy. So many of these guys need therapy.

I've complained before about the fact that one of the main characters keeps a record of everyone woman who's asked her for poison as well as the person they plan on killing with it, and a recurring source of tension is the existence of this record and its potential to ruin so many women's lives and it's like dog this problem could be solved in 5 seconds if you would just fucking burn it
