Hiro Mashima’s deplorable shtick

Topic of today: Wendy Marvell and Rule 34

As we know Wendy is a main cast member in fairy tail. She is frequently posted with Team Natsu and treated as an icon, which in itself is not a problem. The main issue arises from the publicity that comes with the trope of being an older character while still having the appearance of an underage child. Wendy canonically speaking is 400 years old, which is why artist including Mashima and Ueda get away with fetishizing her character. This gives other artists the ok to draw her under rule 34 soliciting her in a sexual nature. Mavis vermilion is in a similar predicament of age dysmorphia, the difference being that Mavis does not age but is treated like the much older wiser person that she is even as an apparition. Wendy however does age, but still has a youthful appearance because of the time bubble. She just doesn’t get treated the same way Mavis does because it isn’t clear that Wendy is from a relative time period and isn’t a spirit like Mavis. In the beginning Wendy was posted as being only twelve years old and was treated as such, from her appearance to other characters treating her as if she were the younger naive sister. Comments are thrown around about her growing into her clothes, or protecting her sight and hearing from mature situations such as; loke talking about sex, nudity of numerous characters, and even just talking about being in the same bed. They allow her to drink alcohol after all the fuss of protecting her “innocence”, but when things start to pick up in battle she is treated as a full fledged adult again . She deals with healing the heavily injured or fending off enemies that are triple in size compared to her physically small stature. Which in continuously being mocked and pointed out. Speaking of her stature, one of Mashimas infamous gags is to write about her chest size. It does nothing to drive the plot and even if it is a joke it comes off as creepy and derogatory. In one instillation of this moment about her being young and small during the Tartaros arc, pedophilic implications of Mest Gryder ( come on even his name feels like an arbitrary choice) being interested in young women appears as the main cast is shrunken down from a spell that was cast on Erza. He is blushing and appears during the statement of Jellal saying he is ‘not interested in little girls.’ This moment is also backed up by Mest being flustered again (during the Alvarez arc) while he sees Wendy and Carla helping children find there parents. He refers to her as an “angel”. It’s not set evidence of him enacting on any of his strange behavior but it is clear that Mashima used these moments as some nasty satire to make light on a serious topic like pedophilia, only for him to cover it up as if Mest and Wendy have a friendly close relationship, when really Mests subplot relied on him gaining his memories back after being inclined to erase them. Wendy being the one to help him get accepted back into the guild. It pushes the line between friendly admiration and uncomfortable attraction.

It is conclusive that Mashima should have the resources to help him write better story plots, he has bitten off more than he can chew coming up with Edenz zero, Ft100yq, illustrating characters for a game, as well as the recently released manga Dead Rock. Fairy tail is probably his most well known work and what boosted his career after Rave master. It deserves a better conclusion and more care and consideration put into the characters he created. It would not only lessen his workload, it would also help refresh the characters that we would like to see elaborated on considering they are important to his story.

Character Inspiration Wheel - Ranmaru Suzuki

I may only do this for Ranmaru as he was my first actual OC, or I may find links between my other OCs and other characters and make some of these for them, but here's Ranmaru's inspiration wheel (along with explanations that I had to shove under the cut due to length lol)

For some of these I'm grasping at straws a lil because I just sorta built Ranmaru up over time lmao - but I was able to draw connections to some characters from shows or games that I'm a fan of. I hope you enjoy!

Inner Circle/Closest Inspirations:

Top Left - Ranmaru Kageyama (From YTTD)

Even though his character isn't really my inspiration for Ranmaru, I figured I'd give him an honourable spot in the inner circle since he's the character who I named Maru after. His appearance also inspired the more ghostly aspects of Ranmaru's character (this has now been reduced to his brother being a ghost, his earlier renditions had more medium-like qualities)

Top Right - Chihiro Fujisaki (From Danganronpa)

Danganronpa was one of my earlier actual fandoms - and the one I was in when I initially created Ranmaru. It's because of Chihiro specifically that I gave Ranmaru his more genderfluid attitudes towards the way he dresses and styles his hair. He doesn't really care for gender when it comes to his appearance, and Chihiro was the main inspiration for that. An additional factor is that Chihiro's softer and more kindhearted nature also inspired part of Ranmaru's character.

Bottom Left/Bottom Right - Rapunzel/The Blind Prince (From Rapunzel - Brothers Grimm)

I'll put these two together as they both inspired Ranmaru's creation in the same way - by being the characters that I 'twisted' Ranmaru from when I adapted his character for the final time for the TWST storyline. Rapunzel is the most obvious inspiration, seeing as his mother kept him hidden away most of his life before NRC and some aspects of his appearance (particularly his long hair.)

The blind prince, however, inspired more than just his blindness. Ranmaru also takes after the prince in the fact that he saved himself from his home by sneaking out of his room and coming across the mirror to travel to Twisted Wonderland - in a way rescuing himself from confinement like the prince had rescued or wanted to rescue Rapunzel.

Outer Circle/More Distant Inspirations:

Upper Top Left/Upper Top Right/Lower Top Right/Lower Bottom Right - Mavis Vermilion (Fairy Tail) / Rapunzel (Tangled) / Kalluto Zoldyk (HxH) / Gin Ibushi (YTTD)

I've grouped all of these characters together as they all served as Inspirations for aspects of Ranmaru's appearance. Mavis and Rapunzel both inspired his current appearance - with blond hair and green eyes. Mavis inspired this as I thought her design was cute and I was fond of her when I was reading Fairy Tail and watching the Anime. Rapunzel from Tangled, on the other hand, was just a more solid depiction of Rapunzel that I looked to as a last thought when designing Ranmaru as he is today.

Gin's inspiration was more so in Ranmaru's older design - where he had brown hair and green eyes, and carried around a purple cat plush that was over half his size. I figured I'd include him because he is always one of the first characters to come to mind whenever I think about Ranmaru, and he's also my favourite YTTD character.

Kalluto was the inspiration for Ranmaru's old clothing style, which has since changed, along with his hair - which you can still see in his fringe along with the hairstyle of Hibiki.

Lower Top Left/Upper Bottom Right - Toph Beifong (ATLA)/Cream (Sonic Series)

These two had some level of impact on Ranmaru's personality, albeit in completely different ways. Toph gave me inspiration to give Ranmaru a bit more of a backbone and grow to be a bit more comfortable making jokes with his peers in his character development (Along with his occasional sass towards others.)

Cream is a bit more of an out-there inspiration, and I'm not all too sure if I should have her there or not, but Ranmaru does remind me of her due to his softer personality and voice, along with his love of nature. I can also see him absolutely adoring a companion like cheese (although maybe Grim already fills that role...)

Upper Bottom Left/Lower Bottom Left - Alluka Zoldyk (HxH)/Haruhi Fujioka (OHSHC)

Both of these characters inspired some part of Ranmaru's attitude towards gender. Beginning with Alluka, who is AMAB and identifies as female, she is one of the first characters I'd seen in a show who was canonically transgender. She inspired the way that Ranmaru's preferences lean towards more traditionally feminine clothing and styles.

Haruhi further inspired the way that Ranmaru feels about his gender identity. I personally headcanon Haruhi as genderfluid/demigirl (although I respect other headcanons regarding this (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)) And I feel that that aspect of Haruhi - where she doesn't mind being perceived as male while working at the host club and not really considering traditional gender stereotypes as something she really cares about abiding by.

My Top 5 Fairy Tail Ships

Friendly Reminder: Just to avoid confusion, this list is from least to greatest, which means it will start from 5 and end in 1. 

So as proof that I will honestly do what I said in my previous post, here are my Top 5 Fairy Tail Ships:

5) Zeref Dragneel x Mavis Vermilion (Zervis)

I have been shipping this ship ever since it’s crack ship days and I was so elated when Mashima made it a real thing. I really love the fact that it was because of the two of them, that Fairy Tail was formed. Although this ship is heavy on angst, it does have it’s cute and fluffy moments. It’s truly a classic black and white/good and evil ship with great dynamics. I’m also glad that Mashima gave them a happy ending where the two of them can be together, even though they died, but hey that’s what they wanted right? The only reason why this ship is in the bottom of my Top 5 list is because there is a major plot hole on how they had August. 

4) Gajeel Redfox x Levy McGarden (Gajevy)

This ship is the ship that nobody can argue with in Fairy Tail. This ship has a healthy development not only for Gajeel and Levy as a couple, but also on the both of them individually. This ship also has a good share of it’s fluffy, angsty, and even smutty moments, but the moment that really got me shipping them was their moment in the Battle of Fairy Tail Arc where Gajeel was really awe struck on Levy trying her best to make Freed’s runes disappear. This ship’s relationship was even further expanded on Fairy Tail’s spin-off: Fairy Tail Gaiden - Road Knight, which I recommend every Gajevy fan to read. AND HAVE YOU SEEN THEIR ADORABLE FUTURE TWINS?!!! Now as for the reason why this ship is a bit lower in my list, it is because they are pretty much already confirmed canon, so I highly doubt that they’ll get anymore major moments aside from a wedding scene of course. ;) 

3) Gray Fullbuster x Juvia Lockser (Gruvia)

Ah this ship took a lot of time for me to accept and see it’s true value, but once I saw it, I really couldn’t help but love this ship. At first, it might seem as though Juvia is just a pesky stalker of Gray, but as the series progressed you’ll see that she does truly love him. Gray is just a big effing tsundere, but he does truly value Juvia from the bottom of his heart. I love how they stayed together after Fairy Tail disbanded and even trained and lived together for six months. Their bond has really grown ever since the Phantom Lord Arc. This ship was even highlighted in Fairy Tail’s other spin-off: Tale of Fairy Ice Trail - Koori no Kiseki which any Gruvia fan should give a try. The reason why this ship ranked third place for me is because I find Juvia’s imagination too intense, but still cute. (BUT SERIOUSLY GIRL SLOW DOWN!!! NOBODY’S GONNA STEAL YOUR MAN!) ;)

2) Jellal Fernandez x Erza Scarlet (Jerza)

Okay I know that this ship has the least interaction between all of the ships that will be mentioned in this post, but that is just because someone, yes I’m looking at you Jellal, is too bent on their repentance journey or whatever. Aside from that, when they do have a moment, it’s big and meaningful which is really impacts both Jellal and Erza’s characters. I’m also so in love with the fact that Jellal gave Erza her last name during their childhood and she kept it all these years. To be honest, Erza’s the most memorable character in Fairy Tail to me because of her last name so props to you Jellal! This ship has a special place in my heart because it’s the ship that got me watching, reading, and dedicating my life to Fairy Tail. The only reason why it’s only second to the first ship is because, as I said before, they lack moments.

1) Natsu Dragneel x Lucy Heartfilia (Nalu)

I. EFFING. LOVE. THIS. SHIP. To be honest, my feelings for this ship needs a separate post, but I’ll save that for another time. Seriously, I can’t even remember what my life was before this ship. Let’s just say that Mashima really gave it his all in developing this ship from friends to best friends and to maybe even more. To be honest, Mashima just loves to spoil the NaLu fandom so much. From fluff to angst and even mild smut, you name it, Mashima has got this ship covered. My favorite moment was when Natsu caught Lucy from falling in the Phantom Lord Arc and when he reassured her after that she is Lucy of Fairy Tail, that Fairy Tail is her home. Although what really got me shipping these two is the amount of trust and faith they have in each other. In all honesty, I’m not a fan of love at first sight and I do not also believe that they just fell in love with each other at the beginning of the series, but I do believe that they trusted each other so much that their trust eventually grew to love. Natsu and Lucy’s relationship wasn’t just pulled out of nowhere, it took time to grow and that’s realistically beautiful. Sure, they are not a perfect couple, they fight and misunderstand each other from time to time, but that’s okay because love isn’t perfect. Love is real. It has it’s ups and downs, but it still persists and this ship is a very excellent example of that. That is why I’ll actually be surprised if Natsu and Lucy don’t end up together by the end of the series.

The 5 Most Loved and Hated Animal Ears in Anime

Animal ears. The anime trademark. In no other genre do you see more characters with wildlife features that aren’t straight up animals walking upright. They’ve launched a million online debates regarding the coexistence of human ears hidden under anime hair that few anime are brave enough to tackle head-on. Turns out they’re also a great predictor of love/hate relationships, although that shouldn’t be much of a surprise for anything resembling a cat.

Love them or hate them they’re a mainstay of the genre. Our friends over at Anime-Planet spend day and night cataloguing these unique features and leaving it to the fans to vote on the best and worst ears of all animal varieties. A note before we again, these are the result of popular votes that I can and will disagree with. Only your democratic will can determine who makes it on this list. With that out of the way, below are the 5 most loved and most hated anime characters with animal ears!

5. Black Rabbit - Problem Children are Coming from Another World Aren’t They?

  I’d make a No Game No Life comparison for Black Rabbit but the list kind of beat me to the punch. Happily surprised to see she made the list given the difference in visibility between the two titles, especially since the whole experience of Little Garden is a... bit... more innocent. Changing hair color is neat. Anyway, Black Rabbit does her best and, at the end of the day, probably really needed this win.

4. Jibril - No Game No Life

I know the dog ears were temporary, but I was honestly expecting to see Steph here over Jibril. Black Rabbit fills a similar role, so I’m gonna assume you all just felt guilty about stacking NGNL in the Loved category. Admittedly Jibril has one of the coolest games against the siblings, taking shiritori to a ridiculous extreme ending in the destruction of the universe (temporarily). But this is really about her wholeheartedly embracing servitude and her on-and-off sadism? That’s it, isn’t it? Do bird wing ears really count? If they do, then where is Mavis Vermilion?

3. Tomoe - Kamisama Hajimemashita

Ah yes, the world famous silver-haired wolf spirit that falls in love with a mortal girl, Tomoe. Who doesn’t feel an instant pang of of compassion when faced with a stray dog? To be honest he’s pretty cruel to Nanami so I’m a little surprised to find him on the hated side of this list, but I’m just now realizing that animal eared characters seem to fall into either servile or tsundere categories and even when he’s being evil, Tomoe’s got a look. Like a classy Inuyasha.

2. Inuyasha - Inuyasha

Speaking of. Wolf boy was destined to show up on this list. He’s got one of the most popular anime franchises in history named after him. Maybe the most famously tsundere male characters ever penned. He’s got a tragic backstory, a big sword, and even his brother is cute. He’s awkward and gullible but, at the end of the day, just wants to be loved. Pretty adorable for a 200-year-old. You can even make him sit.

1. Holo - Spice and Wolf

  While Inuyasha is half wolf spirit, Holo is a wolf god, so this arrangement makes a great deal of sense. You have to hand it to her, she made a unlikely hit out of a light novel series with a pretty inauspicious premise. It takes a lot of  personality to make medieval trade so fascinating but Holo pulls it off even without the personal drama between her and Lawrence. While another god may be the most famous apple fanatic, she’s definitely cornered the animal ear market.

5. Hatsuse Ino - No Game No Life

Surprised at this one mostly because Ino even got the votes to place him anywhere at all? I guess he didn’t leave a big impression on me. He didn’t exactly do anything that I could imagine inspiring such ire, at least in the context of all the other stuff going on in No Game No Life. The polygamy thing is weird but pretty low on the totem pole of that series. He even invented the popular game Gal Gun. He plays dirty, but that’s nothing new either.

4. Nashetanya - Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers-

Ok, she’s definitely evil, but why? Great character design, great personality, and an awesome power. Think about it, if she hadn’t set up the locked room mystery, we wouldn’t have even had Rokka at all and it was a great series! She didn’t hurt any of her companions (directly) and she’s trying to stop an endless cycle of sacrifice meant to safeguard the world from horrible monsters. She’s like Yuna in FFX! Yuna got a sequel and Nachetonia gets this disrespect?

3. Catherine - Gintama

I know she used to be a career criminal but she’s a whole new catgirl now. You can’t hold her past against her. Or is there some other reason you don’t like her?

2. Inuyasha - Inuyasha

I get it, Kagome and Inuyasha got off to a bit of a rocky start with all of his death threats and calling her his dead girlfriends name. In fact a lot of the trouble with their developing romance can be blamed on him, from being caught up on his memory of Kikyo to being the one to snub most of their potential kisses for literal years of our lives. I start to get annoyed if it even takes until the end of a 24 episode series. I’ll give him this, though. He only said “Kagome!” name 568 times while Kagome belted out “Inuyasha!” 971 times. Maybe she’ll be on some future list.

1. Toby - Fairy Tail

I don’t care if saying this makes me a hypocrite but putting Toby here is totally fine. Just looking at the guy gives you a feeling of mild discomfort. Mashima created the perfect uncanny valley between man and dog. No amount of personality could save him from the curse of his physical appearance. He even gets outsmarted by Natsu. I can’t think of a single nice thing to say about him. Sorry Toby fans, if you even exist.

  For those keeping track, that's four dog boys, one wolf girl, two bunny women, only a SINGLE catgirl, and a birdy lady. Most of these characters seem remarkable for being overly affectionate or your archetypal tsundere, but the cats and dogs are all wrong so I'm not sure if there's any important patterns to be found.
