Charles!
Why I like them
He combines many of my favourite character tropes, absurd power, overblown sense of responsibility, good soul, being a goddamned adult in a pen of impulsive children.
Why I don’t
He is a sanctimonious and manipulative asshole.
Favorite episode (scene if movie)
As much as DOFP annoyed me (and still does, ugh, DOFP), I really like the scene where he gets to meet his old self. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s also poignant.
Favorite season/movie
XMFC, no contest
Favorite line
“I pity the fool who comes to my school looking for trouble” (paraphrased)
Favorite outfit
The navy suit with goldenrod vest he wore in X2
OTP
Erik Lehnsherr.
Brotp
Emma Frost. I dunno, I just dig the idea of those two being rich psychic bitches together.
Head Canon
Charles’ empathy and understanding of humanity is entirely due to his mutation; without the ability to perceive people’s minds he is completely lost when it comes to making sense of what people want or need.
Unpopular opinion
The conclusion to DOFP is commonly interpreted as Charles finally learning to not control people, but I think it’s actually the opposite. It seemed to me DOFP taught Charles how to manipulate without using his powers (as demonstrated on Raven), and it should have put him on a path to Dark Charles.
Sadly, X:Apocalypse did not deliver.
A wish
A movie in which he fucking snaps and goes full on Dark Phoenix, and Erik has to be the one to try and get him to see the potential for a peaceful solution
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen
TBH Apocalypse was it, he was so boring and mostly useless. He gets kidnapped or incapacitated a lot already, but X:A barely bothered with the incapacitation. :/
5 words to best describe them
Intelligent, smug, bald, visionary, tethered
My nickname for them
I don’t think I have one

Magnus for 3 if you wanna? :3c
Fandom Meme [Open] AAA of course! Never got to actually write what i thought of him so this was fun :O
How I feel about this character:
Oh man- I feel like he’s definitely a character that deserves more than given. He’s already tragic from the start and God, I didn’t think I would appreciate him as much as I did now :O There’s so much potential to write on him too and he’s someone I fear of writing for that reason (right next to Toki-). He’s a character that definitely doesn’t speak more than what he allows himself to, and he’s someone so laced with mystery. With what we’re given, it’s amazing to see what people come up with! I love that even with what we’re given, he doesn’t die a villain or someone that we just think less of. His last lines are of redemption and I think that’s what makes him so memorable and so likable to an extent. I don’t think I can ever write Magnus as well as I’d love but man, do I love the content coming out surrounding him recently!
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: I’m realizing now that i just ship Magnus with characters that will end tragically--I think Charles/Magnus is becoming one of my favorites (Though I kinda ship it in a tragic kinda thing because Chickles will always be canon to me-). Magnus/Abigail because I feel like it’d be so interesting to explore this relationship either before or after doomstar but it’s clear their relationship won’t end happy (or it could if you play around with an AU for a bit). Magnus/Murderface because God, just their relationship pre-dethklok and then afterward?? Fucking murders me. And hell, even post-doomstar i think is cute-;-; Oh Magnus/Nathan too; I keep on thinking back to the knife that Magnus stabbed him with and like? I can’t believe i’m starting to really ship this over a knife but there’s so much potential-Did Nathan maybe gift it to him beforehand? Did he keep it? If he sees magnus again, what would he do? Does he still have the scar? If he sees Magnus, does he just take off his shirt and show him the scar and saying ‘You keep reminding me why I shouldn’t trust you’ whenever Magnus tries to ask for his forgiveness? God  I'm getting worked up thinking about it sdfljksdlkj Hammertooth is a ship I’ll ship if I get requests to write it or gift it, and especially if friends/mutuals make content on them (including you obviously <3)- I have no idea what to really say about this but other than the fact the potential for writing this is quite honestly great and I love :O And for crack purposes, trindle/Magnus is one of my ships because it’s fucking hilarious to me- (Like Trindle is definitely the type of chick to date an ex-band member of her favorite band and Magnus is probably the type to just accept it-Marc Maron top tier comedy)
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Magnus/Abigail/Charles-I’ve mainly been thinking a lot about what if they knew about the prophecy or some aspect beforehand, but actually together? I did mention my headcanon on Abigail in a previous post or two but for Magnus, there’s quite a lot to go with this. I think that it might’ve added more fuel to that night when he stabbed Nathan; because he realized his time was ticking and was fighting hard to not turn the gears in motion but he ended up doing it anyway. I did think how maybe they could’ve figured this out or the church called to them when they were children or teenagers? Man, that would be tragic though. Growing up with the people who will inevitably backstab, leave you, kidnap, possibly leave you to die but you get attached to them anyway with the hopes that things won’t need to happen. But they do need to do what they need to do. whether their relationship would repair afterward was never detailed in the prophecy because it’s their own that they have to fix. They would have completed their roles so what they do after that is up to them.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I guess this is more of a fandom unpopular opinion? Magnus actually lived a comfortable lifestyle thanks to the royalty checks from The Hammer. For the first few checks, he definitely did stupid shit with it but he ended up learning quickly to manage his money. He’ll spend his checks immediately on rent and bills and then spend the rest carelessly. He would eventually use the checks to also fund the plan MMA and he had planned. He just dresses like that because money can’t buy him better taste
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Firstly, that he lives! Secondly, he would definitely have to face his consequences. They did an eye for an eye with him; they didn’t stab him (at Toki’s request) but did the same amount of torture that magnus did to Abigail and Toki. He survives it, but only because Charles lets him. Turns out his role in the prophecy is not finished yet; he has quite a bit of work to do with Dethklok. Maybe he has to work with Edgar and Dick on helping to finish the song or he has an actual position such as being their second/third-in-command.
Favorite friendship for this character:  I’m positive he and Dr. Twinkletits would be pretty good friends haha- Considering how Twinkletits would probably relate with Magnus in terms of their ex band members though Magnus would probably be the one giving him therapy sessions-
My crossover ship: I blame this entirely on watching the Tangled series the other day but God, Eugene and him would be an absolute chaotic ship and I live for it. Eugene is already a redeemed villain (technically!) and while one rescued someone from their kidnapper, the other was literally the kidnapper- so quite an interesting dynamic- Eugene is such a huge flirt and I think Magnus would crumble and I love it dlkjfd

I’ll give you the same ones: Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne
Haha! That's fair, thanks Nat!
Jim Gordon:
How I feel about this character:
There are some cases where I like Jim/don’t mind him. He's not my favorite. And I liked him in the beginning of everything because I definitely feel like he wanted to be a good cop and tried. Yet, I feel like he’s lost his way in some media. I don’t follow Comic Jim so much. I also kinda think he’s overrated.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Low-key, no one. Maybe, his job honestly, and I also know he had an affair with Sarah Essen in Year One so I guess that was a thing but as far as Gotham goes, I'm so fucking glad they didn't do that.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Harvey for sure!
My unpopular opinion about this character:
While I respect the good that Jim has done and admire him for wanting to clean up a city he didn't grow up in, I do still think he's a little overrated (mostly in Gotham since I don't pay too much attention to comic Jim). He’s also no Batman. Robot suit or no, sorry Jim, but there is only one man for the Bat.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
Honestly? Fuck, I don't know. I really dont think I would mind if they gave him a nice love interest because everyone deserves love. He just needs some more wholesome interaction.
Of course I saved the best for last - my man Bruce:
How I feel about this character:
The only way I don't feel toward him is sexually (😂 look at me already acing this) Sorry, that was me trying to be stupidly funny. Anyway, there was a scene in The Harley Quinn Series where Ivy says: ‘we all grow out of our awkward Batman obsession’ and I just wanna know who is she? Because I don’t know her. I love this man, clearly. I would literally do anything in my small amount of power for him and it’s so dumb how happy I get just talking about him. It’s like all my problems disappear and the bad just melts away. He literally deserves the world (‘but the world does not deserve him’).
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Honestly, there is only one. His love, his life, his wife, Selina Kyle. But I just wanna say, that if Selina was never in his life or even ever a thought, I wouldn’t mind him being with Julia Madison. She seems like the most normal of his love interest and she also seems like an angel and a sweetheart and Bruce deserves a good woman who loves him.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
His kids, Alfred for sure, Julia Madison, probably Clark Kent. Basically anyone who is close friend with this man and has treated him well. Also, Charles Brown (Kite Man).
My unpopular opinion about this character:
First off, I defenitly wanna talk about how I feel Bruce had an alcohol problem at a young age (partial to why he drinks ginger-ale now). However, mostly I wanna talk about why I believe he suffers from an eating disorder (and why DC wants to keep it a secret). I believe there is a good amount of evidence to support Bruce not eating more often than eating itself. Having an eating disorder would fit his background trauma and fits into his daily regime as Batman today. I think DC wants to keep it a secret to keep him miserable and also I don't think people would imagine him having an eating disorder because ‘he’s Batman.’ yet, I think it's important for people to know that eating disorders can happen to anyone. They are not just about starving one's self, and they are not always people who are severely emaciated. Sorry for the long-ass response, I wanna make a larger post later because this is something I feel so passionately about.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
I want him to be happy. I want him to do and be whatever makes him happy--whatever that is. I will support him. I want him to face his demons and heal inside and out. I want the best for him but I think, more importantly, I want people to stop thinking he is just a guy with money and parent issues. He worked very hard for who he became. And I just wanna say, I don't think people should forget what happened to him. I understand wanting to fight for a beloved character (believe me, I do), but this is not about shitting on one character for me. This is about me standing up for someone I love. Bruce Wayne was raped, he’s been taken advantage of and has been sexualized for the public. He deserves to be heard and he deserves justice.

@transoffdensen, I blame you for this. And also the fact that, again, I clearly watch too much Friends. So enjoy Charles’ big gay evening of speed dating courtesy of his dumb bosses having Ideas.
In the end, he couldn’t just say that it wasn’t his birthday. Which it wasn’t. And it would have been unwise to just decline the gift, considering what the boys were capable of when rejected.
Besides, Nathan was glaring at him really hard as Toki presented him the letter, so it was probably important in some obscure, inscrutable way.
“Gay speed dating,” Charles read out loud. He chose to ignore the for what am’s dildos scrawled next to it in Skwisgaar’s handwriting. “You… signed me up for speed dating.”
“Yep,” Pickles confirmed cheerfully, throwing an arm around his shoulders and plopping a paper party hat down on his head. “We’ve never seen ya with a lady so we figured that, ya know, whatever floats yer boat. Happy birthday, chief!”
“Yeah,” Toki echoed cheerfully, “and then we saws an ads in the papers and just knew it was destinies.”
Still hanging back in the door to the office, Murderface coughed. “I juscht want to add that thisch wasch in no way my idea and I will not be held reschponschible for how much of a gay dildolicker you are, Offdenschen.” “Shut the fuck up Murderface,” Nathan growled. “You were the one who found the fucking ad.”
And then they descended into petty bickering. Charles sighed.
It was going to be a rough night.
~ later ~
The third guy that sat down at the table did not look promising. No one at this mail-order event did, but the least he could have done, Charles thought primly, was wash his hair. Being slightly greasy did not improve the chin-length dirty blonde look.
But he had already resigned himself to a terrible evening, so whatever. “Hey, I’m Jim, Jim Nelson,” the guy said with a grin, offering the hand that wasn’t holding a martini garnished with four olives on a toothpick.
Charles eyed it for a second before shaking, keeping his expression as blank and disinterested as the occasion deserved. “John Doe. Nice to meet you.”
“Isn’t it funny that we would run into each other like this?” Jim asked. “It’s as if someone really wants us to be together.” He flashed another cheesy grin and leaned his elbows on the table, slouching. “Me.”
Oh god.
“Witty banter,” Charles said dryly. “Well done.” He took a long sip from his glass of brandy.
“So, tell me a little about yourself, John.”
Charles sighed. “Okay. Well, I’m an accountant. I used to work at—”
“Do you like to party?” Jim interrupted.
Silently but with all his might, Charles willed the bell to ring early just to get this guy the hell away from him. “I, ah. Sure.” Sometimes, with Dethklok, it helped to just agree to the stupid things and get it over with. Maybe it would work with this idiot. "I like parties."
Jim was already nodding eagerly and leading forward. “You’re wild, aren’t you?”
“I suppose,” Charles replied mechanically, absently straightening his tie.
“It ain’t no thing,” Jim said, apparently trying to play it cool while having no actual idea what cool was. "I’m wild too.” He plucked the toothpick out of his drink, slouching even further as he did so, and ate one of the olives before dropping it back in.
Charles managed to avoid actually grimacing. So far, Jim’s only good quality was not chewing with his mouth open. “… So, ah, anyway.”
“I’m sorry,” Jim interrupted again, “I’m staring. It’s just that… you have the most beautiful eyes.”
“Ah… Thank you.”
“And your ass, damn that was a fine view while we were switching tables!”
“Alright. Look,” Charles snapped, and his outburst actually prompted Jim to take his elbows off the table and sit up at least somewhat straight. Then Charles sighed. Obviously it was important to the guys that he sit through all this bullshit so they could feel like they’d done him a favor and could go back to comfortably ignoring him. It was in everyone’s best interest, especially his own, that he endured. “Look, you’re coming on a little strong. I’m, ah, going to give you the benefit of the doubt because… frankly, I don’t feel like making a scene. Why don’t we just start over and you can, ah, tell me about yourself.”
“Alright…"
“Okay."
“I write erotic novels.” Jim looked strangely smug about that statement. Then he added, “For children.”
Charles closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them slightly more prepared to face down the horror that was unfolding. “Sorry, what?”
“They’re wildly unpopular,” Jim continued, as though this was some sort of surprise.
“Oh my god,” Charles muttered, again turning to solace in his brandy. It was going to run out soon, that was the only reason he wasn’t actually gulping it down.
“Oh, also! You might be interested to know that I have a PhD.”
Charles looked up over the rim of his glass warily. “You do?”
“Yeah! A pretty huge d—"
Before he could complete that sentence and the accompanying suggestive gesturing, Charles had already thrown back the last of his brandy, tossed his napkin on the table, and stood to leave.
~ later… again ~
When Charles entered the kitchen to make himself a quick snack before heading to his office, he turned on the lights and then stopped short. Nathan was sitting at the saw blade table in the center of the massive room, turned in his seat to face the door.
“Nathan, ah… I didn’t see you there.”
“How did the speed dating go?” The question flew out like a stone from a catapult, so quickly that it seemed as though the glowering frontman had been holding it in for a while.
Charles weighed the relative merits of lying versus being honest, and the likelihood of nothing worse being foisted upon him after either. In the time it took to consider that, he walked over and took a seat next to the other man. There was a bowl of chips on the table and, since he hadn’t stayed at the event long enough to partake in the complimentary dinner, he took a handful.
“It was like that time,” he said finally, “when all your mothers came to visit, drank too much, hired some male strippers to come dance for them in the living room, and mistook me for one of them. Only with candlelight and linen tablecloths in the way.”
This seemed to be the right thing to say, somehow, because the glare lessened a little bit. “Uh… yeah. And more dick,” Nathan observed.
Maybe it was because he’d had two glasses of brandy at the event, and another during the ride home to help wash away the bad taste the whole experience had left in his mouth, but Charles snorted out a laugh right in the middle of swallowing a chip. He coughed, suffered through Nathan pounding helpfully on his back… and then told him about the PhD joke.
“Huh,” Nathan said thoughtfully. “Hey, that’s pretty g—“ He caught Charles’ expression and quickly changed track. “—bad, it’s a bad joke.”
“It was a very bad joke,” Charles agreed, and ate another chip, this time without incident.
For a moment, a comfortable silence fell between them. It was, Charles reflected, much easier to be around Nathan on his own than with the rest of the band hanging around. On his own, Nathan was unlikely to poke too much fun at him or come up with ludicrous ideas. He was quiet, thoughtful… Smart, in his own way, and if given enough time to think through whatever was on his mind.
“So,” Nathan began eventually, “I was reading this magazine earlier… There was one of those quizzes. You know, like… what kind of mental illness do you have or whatever? So I took it.” He picked up a chip and popped it in his mouth with a crunch. “You know what it said?”
“What?”
“Told me I have ADHD.”
Charles turned in his seat to look at him. “I don’t think so.”
Nathan shook his head. “Nah, I think it might be right.” He ate another chip, chewed, swallowed. “Yeah, I think I do. I think I have ADHD. You know why?”
“Why?”
A huge, shit-eating grin broke out across the big man’s face, instantly prompting a part of Charles to want to smile back. Another part of him, in the instant before Nathan replied, examined that first impulse and thought, When did that start?
A third part, though, saw what was coming, and it made sense. The seed of an idea behind the whole gay speed dating thing, all the glaring, the lying in wait for him to get home — and he didn’t mind. It actually made him feel a little warm on the inside, knowing that somewhere in Nathan was a glimmer of interest and damn the consequences.
“Because,” Nathan said smugly, leaning back in his chair and looking quite pleased to see that he had his manager’s full and complete attention. "I have a damn huge dick."

Better Than
“Tell me.”  She spoke softly.  She wasn’t delicate, as much as her father liked to pretend she was.  Ben knew that, but it didn’t make this any easier for him.  “Everyone says that you’re the one who has to do it.  Tell me why I should be scared of you.”
“You know what I did.”  He snapped at her, but he didn’t mean it.  Porsche Hauptman was smart enough to know he was trying to scare her off.  She had also been in the presence of an angry Adam Hauptman and it took a little more to make her run with her tail between her legs.  He did succeed in making her wince, but it was because she was hurt he’d try to frighten her off instead of speak to her.
“I don’t.”  She said smartly.  “You won’t tell me.”
“Your father, your mother, and your grandfather have all spoken to you about me.”  He reminded her.  She knew he was scared of whatever it was he was hiding.  He lashed out when he was scared.  Ben’s wolf was scary, but he was also better at playing the defensive.  “You know enough.”
“I know you were accused of more than a dozen rapes in London when you were in your twenties—so maybe three decades ago?”  Something else he had noticed about Porsche in the past year, she had picked up dangerous habits from her time living with the Marrok.  She deliberately placed herself on the floor in front of him, she was playing the weaker.
She had been partially raised by her parents and partially raised by the Marrok himself.  The only other born-wolf in existence was entirely raised by the Marrok and he was trained to be a well-oiled machine.
Porsche was no Charles, but she had grown up in this game.  She spoke it like a second language and she was good at playing her part.
She was more dangerous than she looked and Ben knew she was going to get what she wanted from him, something even her father had only brushed the surface of.
“You killed another wolf.”  She said off-handedly.  “Your second.”
“You did your research.”  She smiled at him, but it wasn’t something that met her eyes nor did it suit her face.
“I don’t want to interrogate you.”
“So why are you trying?”  He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow.  “Don’t interrogate me if you don’t want to.”
She shrugged and it irritated him more.  She was pushing his buttons because if he wouldn’t tell her gently, he would tell her if she challenged him and made him explode.  She played dangerously, something that had gotten her into trouble when she had lived in New York.
She had clearly learned her hard limits.
“Did you do it?”  She asked suddenly.  It caught him off guard, he hadn’t expected her to be so blunt.  She gauged his reaction carefully.  “Were you responsible?”
“I don’t know, was I?”  He asked back.
“I wasn’t there.”  She fiddled with the hem of her shirt.  She wasn’t making eye contact, but he knew nothing was bothering her yet because he knew right now the only thing on her mind was finding out the truth.  “You would have to tell me.  Why should I think you did it?”
“It’s becoming of me.”  He replied sharply.
“Becoming how?”
“It’s a walking stereotype.”  He would play her game a little.  “Those exist for reasons, don’t they, stereotypes?  Someone had to do it first for it to become the generalized expectation.”
“You were abused.”  He hadn’t expected her to get that. Ben ran his hand through his hair, he was losing this battle.
“I didn’t say that.”
“Yes you did.”  She insisted.  “What other stereotype is there?  Someone who is abused will abuse.”  He waited for her question but it didn’t come.
“She didn’t stop it.”   He had already walked into her trap, now she was just going to pull ahead by a mile.
“Obviously.”  Porsche agreed.  “You said you were a stereotype.  If she stopped it, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.  You were abused and you went through the Change.  Perfect circumstances, perfect stressor.  You’re upset, your sex drive is way higher but you can’t do anything about it.  You resort to the obvious solution for someone who was raised the way you were, love and sex are all about some sort of violence.  You get a second chance and come to the United States.  You know you can’t fuck this one up, you learn to keep better control but even today those first few years get to you.”
Ben didn’t speak.  His jaw was aching because his teeth were clenched so tightly.
“There you go, you got it.”  He growled, and his eyes weren’t entirely his.  She finally stopped fiddling with her hands and looked up at him with sad eyes.
“Except I didn’t.”  She whispered.  “I didn’t factor in your second, because that would ruin the stereotype.  You didn’t know how to handle your wolf perfectly, no one does when they’re that young.  You’re now in another situation where you have to listen to what someone else says.”  He didn’t want to listen to her because he knew she was about to dig up a skeleton he had thought he buried.  “You felt sick because you think you were no better than she was.  You watched, you didn’t stop him, and maybe you liked it.  That scared you more than anything, the satisfaction you got from watching, from knowing.
“You tried to commit suicide.  You didn’t think you could stop him.”  She brushed hair out of her face.  When had she stood up?  “You killed him.”
“You’re emphasizing the wrong part.”  His mouth was dry, his voice cracked.
“You didn’t rape them.”
“I didn’t save them.”  His eyes were shut tight.  He wouldn’t look at her.
“No, you didn’t.”  She agreed.  He felt her hand squeeze his reassuringly.  “And that’s something I can’t take away from your conscience.  That is something you can come to peace with or that can drive you for the rest of your life.  Think of how much worse this all would have been if you had let it continue.”
“I let it happen.”
“You aren’t her.”  She promised him and he wasn’t sure how she could promise anything like that.  He wasn’t sure how she could be so certain of it.  It made him feel sick.  “You held me.”  And now her voice sounded hurt.  “You never told me.”
“It isn’t something I address.”  He opened his eyes and looked at her for a moment before he dropped his gaze to the floor.  “It had nothing to do with you.  You can’t fix it.”
She wrapped her arms around him and he wasn’t sure what to do.  Porsche confused him, he suspected that would never change.  She was full of strange surprises.
“No, I can’t.”  She agreed.  “I don’t want to.”  She caught his gaze and slowly planted a light kiss on his lips for only a moment.  “I love you.  I don’t love what happened to you.  Right or wrong, I don’t love you for what you’ve done.  I love you and I love you for who you are right now.
I would love you more if you could grow to trust me with something like this.”
Ben nodded.
“It gives you nightmares.”  She looked into his eyes and he had to look away again.  “I hear you, in the middle of the night.  I wish you had told me.  You know about mine.”
“I know.”  He apologized.  “I’m sorry.”
“A lot of what happened with me,”  She said carefully, moving to the side to force him to look at her again.  “It bothered you because of this.  You started having nightmares again because of me.”
He couldn’t say anything this time, not without hurting her more.  His wolf had found her interesting when she was still significantly underage.  He was her senior and someone she had grown up trusting.  He had been a caretaker on several occasions.
A caretaker didn’t sleep with their charge, nor should they be lusting after them.
“It was fine when it was only my wolf.”  He admitted, his stomach churning.  “I could reason that.  Wolves don’t always understand human societal standards.  I could control that.  It was another thing when it was me.”
He knew she was going to ask him if she should leave.  She cared too much, she would put him first.  If it made him feel better to have her leave and never come back, she would.
“I love you, too.”  He said finally.  “I’ll tell you about it one day, ok?  If you still want to know it all.  Not right now.”
She could accept that for now.
A/N -
He’s technically not innocent.  I don’t think he’s innocent entirely in canon, maybe the unpopular opinion?  I’m not sure what the popular opinion is on that.  I think enough hints have been dropped that he certainly did something, it’s just a matter of what it was.
Working on the one where Adam meets Anna.  Kind of hard to do, there’s so much Omega stuffs that I’m drowning in it a little.  Also have another Roy request to work on.  I have another Anna one that I think just came in.
Ok, let’s be honest I think I have quite a few requests to write.  I’m sorry, I got swept away in my longer fic (this might be a part of that now that it’s written tbh...but idk where it’d fit).
I almost made this Mercy and Ben because I have like three requests for that...(imagine me whining here) I have a really hard time with that pairing, guys.  I love Mercy x Adam way too much.

001: Vorkosigan Saga. 002: Charles Gunn/Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.
OH MAN THIS GOT LONG
Vorkosigan Saga:
Favorite character: Hmmm, tough one. No, just kidding, everyone who’s ever met me knows Bel’s my favourite, hands down, no contest.
Least Favorite character: I mean, there are a lot of baddies to pick from. Ryoval, Ser Galen and Bruce Van Atta all rate highly.
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): This one actually is tricky, since I really really like a lot of the canon relationship dynamics. Byerly and Ivan definitely, Aral and Cordelia (and Oliver Jole, though it’s Aral and Cordelia’s dynamic that I’m particularly fond of), Ethan and Terrence, Simon and Alys, and I think Miles and Bel. (Honourable mentions go to Bel and Nicol, Ivan and Tej, and Elli and Elena, which is a pairing I’d not actually really considered until I got desperate for Vorkosigan fic and ran the Russian works on AO3 through Google Translate and found some really interesting fic.)
Character I find most attractive: My mental images of book characters are generally super vague and I’m eh about attractiveness anyway, but thinking about it I’d probably say Rish, Taura or Dono Vorrutyer.
Character I would marry: I’d be quite happy marrying an awful lot of them, really. Bel, for preference, since I’m practically in actual bona fide love with it.
Character I would be best friends with: I’d like to say Bel, but I don’t think I’m exciting enough. My actual best friends through life have mostly been more like Tej or maybe the younger Kareen, so maybe one of them? Tej and I could definitely bond over language learning. (I would also love to be best friends with Byerly, but again, I don’t think we have the same idea of a good time.)
A random thought: The first thing that springs to mind is my fascination with the fact that Bel and Jole had a fling back in the day. When was this? How (hilariously) would Miles react? I would love for Bel, Nicol, Garnet Five and Corbeau (since he’s the Barrayaran Imperium’s ambassador or attache or whatever to Quaddiespace) to visit Sergyar and pop in on Miles, and have that awkward ‘yes, we’ve met’ conversation when Miles tried to introduce them to each other. Well, awkward for Miles and Jole, at least; Bel and Cordelia would no doubt find it hilarious.
An unpopular opinion: Iiiii don’t really like that more or less everyone ended up paired off to an Appropriately Gendered Spouse, with a bureaucratic position and babies ever after. I mean, that’s an oversimplification and there are exceptions (like Elli, or Ethan and Terrence, though that’s implied rather than explicit and since Athos is men-only it feels a little ‘for lack of alternative Terrence might end up with a guy and if he does it’ll probably be Ethan’) but that’s how it feels to me. I don’t know how unpopular that opinion is, though.
My canon OTP: Aral/Cordelia
Non-canon OTP: Byerly/Ivan (I mean, we’ve essentially had this question already)
Most badass character: I think Taura or Elli, probably? Miles is definitely a contender too, but I suppose because you see him wallowing in self-pity or making it up as he goes or doing extremely silly things pretty often the overall effect is perhaps diminished a little. Though I think overall the sheer amount of obstacles, self-imposed as well as external, that he manages to overcome, might put him at the top of the list.
Pairing I am not a fan of: Leo/Silver, probably. I don’t think it was very ethical for Leo to get involved, at least not at that point - I’m not sure if she was canonically a great deal younger than him or if I’ve just imagined that, but there’s a huge gap in terms of life experience, and I think that given the way Van Atta had exploited her very very recently, Leo should have given her some space and time and the tools to figure out what she wanted before he got involved with her.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Bothari’s portrayal made me pretty uncomfortable at times. Not sure if it was necessarily a screwup because she writes other mental illnesses pretty well, at least as far as my understanding of them goes, but I felt like with Bothari there was a very fine line being tread between a very complex depiction of schizophrenia (specifically traumagenic schizophrenia) & cyclical abuse on the one hand, and the ‘dangerous and barely-human crazy person’ stereotype on the other.
Favourite friendship: So many. In the interests of not just repeating myself from the shipping questions, though, I really like the development of Miles and Ivan’s relationship from not really Getting each other at all in the first book (and Miles in particular being pretty contemptuous of Ivan), to a close (if constantly mutually exasperating) friendship once they’re a little older.
Gunn/Wesley
when or if I started shipping it: Gosh, it’s been absolutely years since I watched Angel and I only watched it the once, so any of these answers may be completely wrong, but honestly I think it was from the first time they argued.
my thoughts: I really liked their 'odd couple’ dynamic - it reminds me a little of a much more extreme version of Eliot and Hardison’s initial impressions of each other, in that they each have a lot of preconceptions about the type of person the other is and about their worth, but pretty quickly get over it and come to respect each other and (shockingly enough) realised that it was actually really useful that they’d had such different experiences and that they worked much better together than separately. I’d have liked more episodes dealing with their very different backgrounds and attitudes in a more casual setting - I don’t remember how often that came up but I don’t feel like it was very often, or at least not often enough for my liking :P I just wish that phase
What makes me happy about them: I guess I’ve just said it. Got a bit carried away there I guess.
What makes me sad about them: The goddamn unnecessary love triangle! And everything getting fucked up! Why did this happen! I prefer to pretend that storyline, and the Illyria storyline, and the Grimdark Wesley storyline, didn’t happen, because they were silly and unnecessary. Whedon, you didn’t even have to let my kids be happy, but making them miserable because of internal conflict that wasn’t even in-character for them wasn’t even lazy writing, it would have been lazy writing with different characters, but this required effort! To be bad! Why! (Caveat: possibly the Grimdark Wesley storyline isn’t so much objectively bad as I just didn’t like it. I don’t mind him being emo, that’s a-ok, but his behaviour toward Gunn and Fred was straight-up gross, and while I quite liked Wesley dealing with the consequences of his mistakes, I’d have been happier if he’d learned from them instead of getting worse, lol.)
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Iiii actually have never read any fic of this series, I don’t think, so I guess I don’t know. I can imagine some things that would and that I wouldn’t be surprised to see done.
Things I look for in fanfic: Well, nothing, but I guess it would be the dynamic that I liked between them in the Good Times. Preferably a ridiculous shenanigans, some near-death experiences, actually talking about their feelings, and a healthy dose of fluff (or h/c). And Gunn being smart as hell, because he is and arguably is better at applying that in practice than Wesley.
My kinks: I am a pure and innocent soul and I don’t even know what a kink is. (Okay, but leaving out the sexual element, I guess even though I was talking about how much I hate Grimdark Wes, I’d probably be interested in hatesex fic set during that period if it was concerned with working out their frustration and betrayal rather than just uncomplicated angry sex) (Also, I can see Wesley being super into Gunn being smart as fuck generally, and specifically into his Lawyer Talk after he got essentially the entire corpus of law and G&S downloaded into his brain. In my head this is not a very sexy thing, it’s very ‘Ooh Mr Darcy’, Wesley is hopelessly enamoured and Gunn is initially bemused but flattered and very quickly gets tired of Wes swooning every time he says something smart, which is way too often for it not to have lost its effect AND YET. And especially if they’re working for Wolfram & Hart together in this scenario, in which case Gunn uses advanced legal terminology often on account of it being his job, which makes it hugely impractical for Wesley to try and jump his bones every time it happens. He’s probably just into the legal jargon and not the Gilbert and Sullivan because that would be a very weird kink and not one I can imagine being sexy at all, but now that I say it, if someone wrote that fic I would read it just out of morbid curiosity.)
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Fred! As well as each other! Guys, polyamory, it’s a thing! (If it had to be other people, I’d probably go for Gunn with Fred and Wes with either Angel or Spike. Probably not Lilah.)
My happily ever after for them: No one dies and Gunn has high self-esteem and Wesley stops fucking up everything he touches. Nothing bad happens and The Gang never have to deal with apocalypses or implausibly huge conspiracies or anything, they just hang out being supernatural detectives and doing Season 1-2 type stuff forever. Possibly they are in a triad with Fred but this is not necessary.
