Just Around the Corner...

I've been waiting to say this for a very, very long time:

1.1.12 is almost here.

...Kinda. It's nearly ready for playtesting. I've got one last feature to smooth over and then it'll go out to the testers for feedback. Once the testers are happy with it (and I'm happy with what the testers are happy with), then we'll test multiplayer for a bit - and then it's time for full release.

It's been a looooooong time since NSSS last got a major update - September of 2021, to be exact. Sure, there have been tweaks and patches since then, but even then it's been over a year since 1.1.11_111-1. NSSS has been at version 1.1.11 for three years now - about half as long as NSSS has existed, period.

I'd like to think of 1.1.12 as the beginning of a return to form - wayyy back when NSSS first started, Vulpovile and I were releasing updates once every two weeks. I doubt I can maintain that pace, but at the very least I can avoid any more multi-year update droughts.

I've already got ideas lined up for 1.1.13, 1.1.14, 1.1.15, etc... - many of which I've been daydreaming about for years! I really want to finally sit down and work on these ideas, and make them reality once and for all.

There's a couple other things I'm hoping to polish up. First off - the website. I put it up a few months ago but it's been sitting semi-finished for a while now. The other day I finally dug up my FTP login credentials to actually upload the NSSS multimc instance and server jar there so I could fix the broken download links in the original forum post. Sorry for letting them sit broken for so long - I was very busy with IRL work. I'm going to be fleshing the website out a bit more soon - maybe I'll even get the in-browser applet working!

The launcher is also getting renewed attention. I figured out Oauth a while ago (so you can actually log in to microsoft accounts with it - yippee!) but was struggling to deal with https connections in older versions of Java. I think I've figured out a solution that's workable, so the launcher should finally be ready soon - here's hoping!

Lastly, the forums. Yes, there are official NSSS forums - but the URL has been somewhat hidden for a while now. I've been having trouble getting the phpBB theming to look the way I like it - if anyone has any experience with phpBB themes, please reach out! The increasing futility of trying to present information on discord has made it clear to me that it's for the best if most NSSS-related discussion were to happen on an actual public-facing website rather than a glorified IRC chatroom. The discord will still exist - but it will no longer be forced to do the triple-duty of "information repository", "public forum", and "community chat".

Let's see how much of this I can get done before 2030...

The publicity of large institutions occupies the big screens on the main streets.

 

Although some traditional North American big projects also participated in the conference, unlike other regions, STEPN and some emerging projects in the fields of infrastructure and AI performed well at this conference. In contrast, there were fewer Social projects, while DeFi and AI projects emerged in large numbers. The popularity of the Bitcoin ecosystem remained high, especially after the release of the Babylon mainnet, many projects built on it entered a new stage.

I'm not convinced this will outright nuke the platform in its immediacy, but so much of this is a bad idea that will kill it LONG term. They're attempting to homogenize the platform to get its features working on WordPress.

I'm calling it now they're absolutely doing this to push all of its userbase onto WordPress so that they can liquidate Tumblr's assets and potentially either downscale development of it or shut it down entirely. Naturally I have no hard proof of that but I do have conjecture worth pointing out from both the current situation and similar occurrences.

Look at Skype: Microsoft did exactly that to create Teams. It bought out THE most potently popular social networking app on the market at the time. After ripping through it with ads, features no one asked for and letting the actual infrastructure of the app's VOIP feature and chat functionality waste away (recall just how bad the voice chat quality and stability was before the mass exodus of users)? They gutted the project entirely, cannibalized its features and made a new applet in its place that was proprietary and gave Microsoft complete control over it: Teams.

With Tumblr hemorrhaging money due to their continued incompetence both on a moderation standpoint (there are still so many obvious cases of favoritism and dog-piling, especially regarding trans people) and a monetization level due to their incessant shoving of ads that still have zero oversight and a subscription service that provides so little value... Well, you can see why I'm watching this with a rather scornful eye. WordPress is Automattic's bread and butter. And after the current Tumblr CEO had a very vocal portion of the userbase (rightfully, in my opinion) absolutely rip him apart for his site's treatment of trans women and his frankly embarrassing responses to all of the commentary? Why would any tech company CEO want to hold onto something their users clearly spite them over?

Note: this is CONJECTURE. I cannot, for anything said, state this is the end-all, be-all state of affairs for their plans.

But I'm backing my blog up nonetheless, and I recommend you do so, too.

automattic's made a ton of blunders recently but i hope they're not gonna try something like convert tumblr to run on wordpress, a project that both tumblr and wordpress engineers agreed would be a lot of work for no gain (most likely worse performance). that would be a silly thing to do.

Summary: Post teaches you 1. How to automatically make a video embed post on tumblr everytime you go live on twitch, and 2. How to keep your discord community updated on your tumblr activities so that they’re not missing out!

FIRST

if you’ve never used IFTTT before, here’s a quick refresher!

IFTTT stands for If This, Then That. Basically, it’s a no-code way of telling platforms what to do and how to do it so that tasks are accomplished without you ever having to think about it.

There are two sections to this:

Naturally, If This runs first. Then That runs next.

Both of these sections can be any platform action that IFTTT supports. In our case, we want Twitch, Tumblr, and Discord to be supported. Thankfully, it does!

Ingredients are a core aspect of IFTTT and they represent the various elements of the specified platform. If you click “Add Ingredient” you can see the range of options to choose from and customize. In regards to Twitch, this would be things like when the stream started, what game’s being played, the channel name, etc. All these things are considered Ingredients which are used in your “recipe” to create the final result.

Let’s put this into practice and start with our first example:

Twitch to Tumblr

Here’s the command I’ve created:

I’ve set this up so that everytime I go live on twitch, I want it to make a Go Live post on tumblr without me ever having to log into tumblr and make a post mid-stream.

I’ve also set mine to wait 1hr30 before posting because I like to chat with my viewers for a bit, y’know catch up with them etc. before jumping straight into the game but that’s just me.

The twitch section is self-explanatory. You just connect your twitch account if you haven’t already. There are other scenarios here so feel free to experiment!

As for the tumblr section..

As you can see, HTML is accepted in the caption section so if you wanna jazz it up even more, feel free! For me, I didn’t like that ChannelUrl would post an ifttt link so I forced it to include a direct link to my twitch channel instead.

That’s about it for that applet. Just make sure the little slider shows as Connected and you’re good to go!

So what I’ve done here is a basic command where I’ve specified it to only post in a specific discord channel when I textpost on tumblr with a specific tag in order to avoid spamming it with countless reblogs. Basically have it act as a second twitter so my community can keep up with the essentials!

Digging through some very old files tonight for nostalgic purposes and I ran across this pretty old website of mine. I don't have a date for when this screenshot was taken, but we can cross-reference with the twitter profile there, which I honestly forgot existed. Looks like this image is from around July 2010.

What a weird time to look back on in my life, especially in the context of that twitter account. I was streaming 3-5 times a week just like career streamers do today, but I was doing it two years before Twitch.tv existed, and probably four to five years before Twitch let you monetize and make it into a job. I burned myself out before most people even got going.

I believe the big black rectangle in the image above was where chat would have gone, but it was some weird shockwave/flash applet and didn't screenshot very well.

Performance for Multi-User Online Environments (Before COVID-19)

I’m Angela Washko and I am currently teaching a course called Performance Art (In The Expanded Field) at Carnegie Mellon University and have recently had to switch to teaching remotely - a switch that comes maybe more naturally to me than others because of my experience participating in the net art community and operating as a performance artist specifically within online environments. Before everyone was forced to work remotely because of an international pandemic, many artists were already thinking about the internet as a context for performance art.  I wanted to put together a resource focused on artists who have been doing the work of thinking about the specificity of virtual spaces as sites for performance and making work mindful of the unique qualities of the contexts they operate in. I hope that this list of works could be a resource for educators and artists who are interested in looking at artworks by individuals who have been thinking very intentionally about performance in networked contexts.
