I wonder if someone used AI for the promo material. This could explain why some characters are so different. But maybe it's different artists' styles, who knows?

I don’t mean to sound rude but no it’s not that they used ai. They work with A LOT of artists on their projects and sometimes some of them just don’t get characters right, usually in group shots like those ones. This is a game where the characters are mostly anime girls, most of whom have minimal facial features and pale skin. So especially in situations where they’re putting the characters in new outfits or having one artist draw a bunch of them even if they aren’t familiar with each character’s specific traits that fans are looking for, they have a tendency to not get it right on occasion. I had to sort through @arknights-archive to find most of those and the number of passable~good official Nearl art far outnumbers the bad ones I cherry picked. It’s just that the bad ones are so clearly not Nearl-looking that they stand out like that.

People jump to scapegoating ai over every little thing so quickly now, but sometimes it’s really just that one drawing didn’t turn out right

i got ch'en and skadi recently, and while i kinda understand skadi's role in stages (dealing with strong enemies), what does ch'en do? what is her role? in fact, what differentiates swordmasters as a subclass?

Swordmasters are a little weird to get used to because their traits don't really factor into their actual playstyle much.

Basically, Swordmasters have lower ATK stats that other Guard subclasses, but do a double attack. If you know that physical damage is calculated as ATK - DEF, you would understand that hitting twice with lower ATK does awfully when compared to hitting once with a higher ATK stat when fighting against higher DEF, so Swordmasters aren't quite as good at being DPS units as other Guard classes.

However, another feature that Swordmasters have that isn't immediately obvious is that they all feature skills that feature a burst of damage / supermove, as opposed to the usual skill that simply enhances a unit in some way. This makes Swordmasters excellent at bursting enemies down, often also hitting flying enemies to boot.

Ch'en in particular is a special one because her 3 skills all have very different uses, and all three have become her "meta" skill at some point. She also has a talent that gives 1 SP every few seconds to all allies with offensive/defensive recovery skills, which actually makes her a unique SP battery support unit in certain teams.

Her S1 is a simple stun on attack. Not flashy, but with specialization and module upgrades it becomes her most brutally efficient skill, as it recharges extremely fast and lets her repeatedly stun dangerous enemies and even stun lock enemies with very slow attacks, such as Colossi.

Her S2 is a sword thrust that hits an extended range in front of her that deals both Arts and Phys damage combined. It hits air units, and at S2M3 it's able to activate instantly upon deploying Ch'en as its initial SP matches its SP cost, letting you use Ch'en as a drop-in bomb, sort of like the Cherry in Plants vs Zombies.

Her S3 is her boss-nuking skill. When activated, Ch'en becomes untargetable and leaves her spot, jumping to any enemy in range and slashing them with enhanced physical damage, before dealing a final slash that stuns the last enemy hit. If there's only one enemy in range, she'll focus all her slashes on that enemy. Since she's untargetable while slashing, Ch'en's S3 can both serve as a nuke and as a dodge, since Ch'en can dodge boss skills and other dangers such as Degenbrecher's AOE disarm or the Emperor's Blades' Dominion fog. This skill has allowed Ch'en to hold her own vs many modern Arknights bosses that feature defensive skills to prevent getting nuked down by DPS monsters like Surtr. Plus it looks really cool.

after I mentioned it last night multiple people expressed interest in my thoughts on Lobotomy Corp so here we go.

This is the kind of game where my friends who've already beaten it are gathered around me like a pack of hyenas watching a wounded gazelle, asking me questions like "so, what do you think of this character?" and then huddling up to whisper amongst themselves, presumably eagerly waiting for me to hit the scene where, I dunno, Hod vivisects and eats a baby while looking directly into the camera or whatever.

People really looked at what happened to the word Sephirot(h) and went 'listen, we're just getting started' huh.

If Hod wants to eat a baby though, I think that's her right. I wanna hug Hod.

Netzach can have one too. A hug, I mean. Eating a baby would probably just make him more depressed.

Yesod is in the 'fucked up, but I can see how he got there' tier. If the game gave me true managerial oversight, I'd make Netzach share half his drugs with Yesod. I think it'd be good for both of them.

Malkuth is kinda scary, but I like her anyway.

Angela is just scary and at this point I'm 90% sure that there's some 'the PC is [important thing here] and she is fucking with your memory/perception to hide it' stuff going on. If I had to guess, that blank is 'actually B' or 'actually A', but I'm going on pretty scant and indirect clues so far.

This game is going to be forever warring with Arknights in my mind for the rights to define the word 'Enkephalin.'

Judging by my friends, I've had pretty horrible luck so far, including the game skipping me directly from Teth to Waw and then giving me some of the roughest Waws to boot. I only got He ones later.

As of last night I'm currently around day 20 and getting ready to make my first rewind back to day 1, because hoo boy am I not prepared for Alephs.

I was dreading rewinding, because I am very attached to my pro super agents Max and Yum-Yum, and then I realized. I also have the fucking... iron maiden thing. The one that you can only use/research by letting it murder people. The one that I haven't researched at all, because I don't have people to feed to it. But if I'm rewinding anyway... Thanks for your hard work, everyone, I'm just gonna need you to leave your gear at home today, form a queue, and step through this door one at a time. Don't mind the screams.

I might still spare Max and Yum-Yum though. Go free, my friends. I have no quarrel with you. Try not to get blood on your shoes, there's gonna be a lot of it.

The first time Meat Lantern escaped I went 'okay, I don't know what this guy is capable of, so let's round up everyone I have and send them in to pummel it with their best weapons.' It killed literally every agent except like two who had guns, in one gigantic bloodsplosion. I've discovered some ways for Meat Lantern to kill people that my friends didn't know was possible.

Old Lady, Child of the Galaxy, and Naked Nest aren't friends exactly, but they're generally well-behaved energy-printing machines. My friends insist that Naked Nest isn't, but my kid Max has that thing locked down. (Sorry again if I do torture you to death in an electronic iron maiden, Max.) Every Zayin I haven't mentioned basically falls in this category, except they don't actually make meaningful levels of energy at this point.

FUCK Alriune, all my homies hate Alriune.

CENSORED is pointedly not my friend, but it's so funny that I can't dislike it. To a lesser extent this also includes Grave of Cherry Blossoms, because every time it's gone off, it's killed some clerk while I watch and go 'eh, this is fine.'

Characters: Abedo, Kaeya, Diluc, Childe, Zhongli, Jean, Hu Tao, and Lisa

authors note: I might do more in the future! These are just my headcanons so if you don't agree that cool! Feel free to let me know what you think they're like as gamers!!

Albedo:

what they look for in a game: Albedo seems like the type to enjoy games with vast worlds that involve lots of exploration and puzzles. I also feel like he like more quiet gameplay- if that makes any sense. Very much "Show, don't tell." Likes walking simulators!

things that turn them off from a game: He dislikes when games over-explain themselves/their plots. He likes to be able to unfold the mysteries and plot threads himself instead of being spoonfed. He also dislikes voice chat bc people are mean. If there is a VC he mutes basically everyone even if it makes teamwork difficult.

how much time do they devote to videogames: Albedo really only plays videogames on days off or when alchemy research has hit a lull.

a game or games that I think they'd like: outer wilds, shadow of the colossus, and journey.

Kaeya:

what they look for in a game: Story-rich games with unique art that explore heavy topics or philosophical themes! but also really likes multiplayer games where he can troll lol.

things that turn them off from a game: If he dislikes the art he finds it hard to play or pay attention to. This doesn't mean he demands picture-perfect graphics! He's mostly into unrealistic and eye-catching graphics/art he likes games with style and flair!

how much time do they devote to video games: Kaeya likes to play after a long day of work to unwind and relax!

a game or games that I think they'd like: Disco Elysium and the persona series!

Diluc:

what they look for in a game: Diluc is a very busy man who likes to be in control of his life and the things that affect it. Therefore I have come to the conclusion that he likes simple and sweet games with low stakes where he is mostly in control if not basically god haha.

things that turn them off from a game: Games that involve him to be emotionally invested or have lots of stressors are not his thing. Games are played to relieve his stress, not make him cry over character death.

how much time do they devote to video games: He likes to play a little bit on his break when he gets the chance or a little bit after work. Doesn't like to play for too long each day or he feels unproductive!

a game or games that I think they'd like: the sims, planet zoo, my time at Portia, stardew valley, and ANIMAL CROSSING!! (I dont care if this is OOC okay. Diluc plays animal crossing on his lunch break. His favorite villagers are the bird ones. His favorite fruits are apples and cherries, and he loves terraforming his island. He finds it therapeutic.)

Childe:

what they look for in a game: loves gacha games, he's a total whale, and loves to flex his pulls. Also loves games with intense competitive multiplayer and couch co-op games. Absolutely a sore winner who everyone hates playing jack box with.

things that turn them off from a game: Dislikes the story mode of most games bc they usually fail to keep this attention. He'd much rather be making yo mama jokes and shit-talking n00bs over the mic like the little asshole gremlin he is. The only exception so far is "The Last of Us," because of one time when the internet was shitting out on him during matchmaking. He decided to play the story while his connection got itself together and ended up liking it.

how much time do they devote to video games: Stays up late playing them at night a LOT. They're usually the reason he's tired the next day.

a game or games that I think they'd like: mario kart, smash bros, arknights, mortal kombat, apex, and dead by daylight.

Zhongli:

what they look for in a game: Zhongli likes simple games with cute graphics and easy controls. Mostly a mobile gamer as he finds most console game controls confusing. Loves virtual remakes of classic games that he used to play with other people physically.

things that turn them off from a game: Really dislikes first-person shooters. He finds them loud and disorienting. Poor old man.

how much time do they devote to videogames: Barely ever plays, might play while having a cup of tea or to pass the time while waiting for something!

a game or games that I think they'd like: mahjong, solitaire, candy crush, and those lumosity games for training your brain.

Jean:

what they look for in a game: At first when jean thought of video games the only thing that came to mind was "a waste of time." As the acting grand master of the knights of Favonius she rarely has time to socialize or even date. That's when she decided to maybe just maybe give dating sims a shot. She's a bit insecure about it, but they give her butterflies without the strain of a real relationship.

things that turn them off from a game: Really dislikes games that glorify villainy or have you play as the bad guy. She also really hates horror games. Fun fact, she played doki doki literature club but missed the warning somehow and WOW she got really upset-

how much time do they devote to video games: As mentioned previously Jean is a busy gal. So she really only gets to play games on her rare days off or maybe just a little before bed.

a game or games that I think they'd like: I don't know a lot of sweet and fluffy dating sims but I feel like the sweet and fluffy ones are her favorite! I've really only played one dating sim before and that was monster prom so I'm gonna use that for the example lol. I know there's a lot of mischief in that game but she always chooses the more moral upstanding choice even if it cost her a date haha.

Hu Tao:

what they look for in a game: Hu Tao is partial to games with gothic aesthetics and horror elements! Specifically really loves psychological horror and unique creature design. Enjoys difficult gameplay and feels a sense of accomplishment when she succeeds!

things that turn them off from a game: When a game is too easy to play she gets bored rather quickly.

how much time do they devote to video games: Frequently plays really late at night while listening to a paranormal podcast or other spooky content.

a game or games that I think they'd like: Dark souls, Darkwood, The cat lady, rule of rose.

Lisa:

what they look for in a game: Like Childe, Lisa likes competitive gameplay. But she's more into fantasy MMO RPGs! She just really loves fantasy things it doesn't have to be multiplayer. Also really likes games with lots of lore and digs strategy turn-based combat! Other game types she likes are visual novels or anything with a good story-driven narrative. Loves being able to discuss fan theories online in forums.

things that turn them off from a game: Mediocre writing, poor/inconsistent world-building, or a lack of lore. She needs a story to sink her teeth into or she just won't play.

how much time do they devote to video games: Probably plays a lot. Really only pausing to correct people's behavior in the library!

a game or games that I think they'd like: World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, League of legends, Darkest dungeon, and slay the spire.
