SPRING FORWARD
first things first: do you like spring? Of course. Are there people who don't? When I was little, spring felt like waking up. Like a good stretch after a long nap.
what is your favorite thing about spring? Vitamin fucking D. Nothing like an extra hour of sunlight to make you feel alive again.
what is your least favorite thing about spring? The rain. I know it could be snow, but there's nothing quite like the mud season around here.
do you have a vegetable / produce / fruit garden? Personally? Besides the family farm? No. Though I'm in the market for a good plant. Something to practice keeping alive, you know?
how about flower beds, or things planted in the house? I'm kind of shit with flowers. Never totally got the appeal of them.
regardless of what you do or do not plant, are you good at growing plants? have a green thumb? I grew up on a farm. I know how to tend to a bush.
what’s your favorite flower or plant? Always had a soft spot for snowdrops. They're the birth flower of January and my mother pressed a few of them into my baby book.
what’s your favorite scent that you associate with spring? Morning dew.
is there a sound that you associate with spring time? Chatter. Just people, outside. Talking. Laughing. Winter feels a bit like holding your breath. Spring like letting it out.
do you prefer sunny mornings or rainy afternoons? Sunny mornings when the chill hasn't fully loosened its fist.
favorite thing to do on a sunny, warm spring day? I'm basic. I just go in for a blanket on a sunny patch of grass, my guitar, and a good nap.
favorite thing to do on a rainy, chilly spring day? Light a fire and pull out the last of the hot chocolate.
do you celebrate Easter? any traditions you follow for it? Sort of.
regardless of if you do or don’t: favorite Easter candy? Peeps. Love a good sugar rush.
what other springtime holidays do you observe? The time change count? I'll deal with the sleep hangover. Just give me that extra hour of sunlight.
favorite place in Merrock to visit in the springtime? I like to take a hike along the creek. Watch the first buds growing on the trees. Catch a few shots on the camera.
the spring bugs are coming out: do you rescue them and let them out of the house, or grab the nearest shoe? We talking ladybugs or stink bugs? I'll advocate for a bugs right to bug, but if that stinker is anywhere near me in the night it's getting the shoe.
are you a big spring cleaner? I'm not a big cleaner period. I'm sure my brother can attest to this.
do you switch over your wardrobe from cold weather to warm weather clothes? Of course. And I'm guilty of being the sucker that changes it to early. One warm day and I'm ready to pack in the winter coat.
how about the house: does your decor change for the spring season? do you rearrange furniture? I used to hang a different air freshner in my car, if that counts. But damn, I only just got myself a bedside lamp. Maybe I'll be a spring decorator next year.
what color makes you think ’spring’? Has to be green, right? That first pop of color after a really good rain always makes me smile.
describe your perfect spring outfit: Layered. Got to have the ability to deconstruct as it gets warmer. So shirt, sweater, light pants, and boots. Good pair of sunglasses if it's sunny. Umbrella if I have the foresight to remember. (which is never).
most adorable looking baby animal that you ever did see? You're going to think I'm insane, but an opposum. I'm a fucking sucker for those mamas carrying them all around. They're so damn weird, a also a little ugly, and it just activates the endorphin center in my brain for some reason.
what’s a drink that makes you think of spring? Champagne with strawberries.

Did You Know That Face Washing Mistakes Can Age You?
Face Washing Mistakes
Skincare is a unique process for everyone. Beauty routines range from the systematically meticulous to borderline nonexistent. But the truth of the matter is that no matter where you lie in the skincare spectrum, you could be making mistakes that cause your skin to age simply by washing your face incorrectly. We spoke to Dr. Manish Shah, who is a board-certified plastic surgeon and anti-aging expert in Denver, Colorado. He counsels patients on cosmetic procedures, maintaining results, optimizing their skincare, and preventative measures. "While skin treatments, injectables, and surgery can help maintain the visual appearance, your basic skincare goes a long way toward preventing premature aging.
You Are Washing Your Face Incorrectly If You Do The Following:
Using too much toner
Facial toners are an essential part of any beauty routine. However, using too much toner can dry out the skin and may even lead to more sebum production as your glands attempt to overcompensate. If you find your skin feeling tight or irritated after applying toner, you may be using too much, and this is especially true if you have sensitive or combination skin. Some toners come in a spray bottle, which is great for applying a light layer over the skin after cleansing. If not, simply pour a few drops of toner on a cotton pad and gently glide it across the face.
Also, many toners have alcohol-based ingredients, such as denatured alcohol, in them. Avoid toners with these ingredients at all costs -- as they will dry the skin completely and remove natural oils needed to keep the skin moist and healthy.
Products that are too harsh
As consumers become more sophisticated, they inquire about ingredients such as retinol. They know it is super hydrating and great for the skin, but they don't understand that skincare needs to be sustainable, so they ask for the strongest, most active form of prescription retinoid. "This is a mistake," says Dr. Shah, "any credible doctor will first assess the condition of your skin alongside the products and treatments you are already using in order to determine if you need prescription retinol or if a less active form sold over-the-counter is better for you."
Dr. Shah explains that "retinol in less active forms will have similar effects without irritating the skin as much, which will be helpful to you as you continue using a product on your skin over time."
Scrubbing too hard
Instead of rubbing and scrubbing your face to try to get it squeaky clean, your motions with your cleanser should be as gentle as possible. Your hands should not be doing all the work! Scrubbing the skin too harshly or with materials that add exfoliation can cause micro-tears in the skin as well as excessive elimination of essential oils which leave the skin dry.
Over exfoliating
While gently exfoliating a few nights a week can do wonders for the skin, it's easy to go overboard. What keeps your skin looking fresh, young, and hydrated is preserving the outer layers glow by lightly helping it shed old skin cells and moisturizing to help cell turnover. However, "the danger is that many people don't think to consider their loofah or washcloth as an exfoliation tool. Even if you are only using an exfoliant a few days a week if you are scrubbing with a harsher material every day, you could be exfoliating more than you intend and that can cause dryness, red patches, dehydration, and hyperpigmentation," warns Dr. Shah.
Washing with hot water
Though it might feel good, using hot water to cleanse your face can actually dehydrate it. Hot water can be abrasive, stripping the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and flaky. This can also lead to acne flare, breakouts, and skin irritation. For best results, rinse your face with lukewarm or cool water - not cold either - to help constrict blood vessels. Dr. Shah also points out that "hot water enlarges your pores, and this can affect the oil production of the skin as well as the texture of it."
Washing more than twice a day
You may be thinking, the cleaner, the better, right? Think again. Over-washing your face can actually damage the skin's natural protective system, which then can affect how easily the environment irritates your skin, how efficiently you retain moisture, and—over time—cause you to show early signs of aging such as fine lines and dry patches. "As a general rule of thumb, you should not be washing your face more than twice a day. If you have an activity like working out or an outdoor sport in the middle of the day, try to use a bland soap or cleanser to wash away dirt and sweat without further irritating the skin," advises Dr. Shah.
Forgetting to follow up with a moisturizer
"The best time to apply moisturizer is after the shower or after applying toner. This will help prevent excessive dryness, and it will help to skin retain moisture," says Dr. Shah. Moisturizers also come with a combination of vitamins and lipids that help the skin heal irritations, strengthen its protective functions, and look smoother and healthier.
Washing with whatever soap is available.
Many people are guilty of this one. People may think that soap is soap and a clean face is just a clean face, but you could be damaging your skin and aging yourself by washing the face with any available hand soap. Soaps with fragrances can be especially irritating to the skin. Overall, these soaps are not made for the face, and while this may be a minimalist approach, it borders on detrimental as hand soaps are dehydrating and lack many of the ingredients that optimize your skin's complexion.

Dr. Manish Shah
Manish Shah, M.D., F.A.C.S. was born in Canada and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. He graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a degree in biomedical engineering. He then completed his medical training at the University of Virginia, earning his Medical Doctorate. During this time he also completed a one-year fellowship in microsurgery research at the New York University School of Medicine / Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. As a prelude to his plastic surgery training, Dr. Shah completed a rigorous five-year training program in General and Trauma Surgery at Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia. His formal training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was completed at the Univ. of Tennessee College of Medicine – Chattanooga Unit. After completing his plastic surgery training, he moved to New York City when he was selected for the prestigious Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. He underwent extensive, advanced training in aesthetic surgery of the face, breasts, and body at the hands of some of the most renowned cosmetic surgeons in the world. This fellowship is widely considered to be the best of its kind in the world. Dr. Shah is one of only a select few plastic surgeons in the country who have undergone formal post-graduate training in aesthetic surgery.
Dr. Shah’s specialties include revision facial aesthetic surgery, rhinoplasty (“nose reshaping”), and aesthetic surgery of the breast (breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction). He is, however, well-trained in all areas of aesthetic surgery.
Dr. Shah is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center teaching cosmetic surgery to the plastic surgery residents. He is a past Chief of Plastic Surgery at Denver Health Medical Center. He also maintains a private practice in Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery in Cherry Creek.
Dr. Shah is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, and the Rhinoplasty Society.

When growing up, my mom used to say “Go outside and get the stink blowed off of ya”. While yes, I did bathe regulary, she always seemed to know when I was bored of the indoors.
Going outside is theraputic. The stink my mom was referring to was the dust in my mind. She knew that if I went outside and played, I’d get “reset”.
Humans are like that. We need a constant change of scenery. There’s a reason they call it “cabin fever”.
The current COVID-19 situation
As a result of significanly less commuting, one HUGELY positive benefit human kind is receiving? The air is literally cleaner than it’s been in years. Check out these pictures from space of China. It’s like Mother Earth is in cleanse mode. A reset of sorts. Even the canals in Venice, Italy are clear enough to see the fish!
So many people working from home right now, or sadly, not at all all. The first couple of days is always great. The liberation of no commute is clutch. Especially us super commuters – those who commute more than an hour in each direction. For Gary, it’s 2 hours in each direction, yuck.
The giddiness of conducting business from home. Your home office. It could be a separate room, a desk in the basement, or placing your laptop on the kitchen table. Doesn’t matter, it’s your new office.
Then just as quickly, the novelty wears off and you begin to go stir crazy.
What is it possible do?
The boundaries of what we’re allowed to do has been morphing, so it’s always good to check with your local and state governments to see what’s allowed. If you can’t get out but have internet, there’s some pretty awesome virtual tours you can take.
Park tours (click here for more info) – what? With today’s technology, you can go to place never dreamed of. The cameras are so much better than they used to be! These tours have crazy good definition making them feel like you’re there.
Museum tours (click here for more info) – a lot of museums are going digital for a lot of reasons. Documenting history is one. Offering online information is another.
While still practicing the rules of social distancing and keeping yourself safe, taking advantage of the outdoors during good weather often helps clear the mind.
If you can and are allowed to…
Try getting outside a little. Of course this gets more complicated if you live in the city. For those in the burbs or country, not so much.
No matter where you live, hiking/walking outdoors breathing in nice fresh air in sunny weather can help to restore your mind! Often you can walk to get to your local park and don’t need to burn gas to get there.
In the City
Unless there’s a complete ban on outdoor activity, there are many different distractions in almost every major city. Self guided “tours” if you will.
In Washington, DC, in just 3 days, the Cherry Blossom Festival bloom season peaks on March 21. The activities that create crowds are obviously canceled, but the blossoms are still being encouraged for viewing. See updates here.

Boston, MA has the Freedom Trail. It’s spread throughout the city and all you need is a map, which you can get online. After that, the history is yours for the learning!

Philadelphia, PA has a similar trail called The Historic American Revolution Trail of Philadelphia that takes you to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell (which can only be viewed through the windows currently).

Even in New York City, Madison Square Garden is pretty big and can probably accommodate a lot of people without violating the rules.
More rural but still kind of a city thing, is the Appalachian Trail – Harper’s Ferry trail/hike. This one can be accessed from a great parking area, and, you get to choose between several hiking trails. That means you’re not specifically restricted to hiking the town of Harper’s Ferry where there’s fascinating history. Or you can take off into the mountains and lose yourself for a couple of days.

In the Burbs
Due to some excellent planning in almost every suburban location, there are a myriad of parks and park systems that you can lose yourself in nowadays. In the Tri-State area of MD, PA, and DE, there are some dozens of miles of trails you can hike, bike, or even ride a horse on. A number of trails allow dogs (as long as you clean up after them).
Some are tucked inside housing developments like the William M. Redd Junior Park. Others could almost be considered vast like the White Clay Creek Park, that has some 40 miles of trails in and around numerous housing developments.

In the Country
Obviously this is the easiest of all to practice social distancing and proper hygienics during this time.
Places like the Appalachian Trail – Snickers Gap and Bald Mountain offer peace and solace without much interaction issue. That is depending on how many others take advantage of it.
Pick a spot close by and go for it. You may encounter others, but that shouldn’t be an issue. In fact, on most trails, just negotiating the trail itself requires social distancing.

One of the key issues is to look for ways to unwind and look at different scenery for a while to provide the reset you need.
Whatever you do, do it responsibly and within the restrictions required for your location. Check the rules. It’s important that while we need to remain sane, we also need to be good stewards.

If your wipers streak or fail to clear the windshield thoroughly, replace the blades.
