This trap is so old and yet it is so effective in practical play. I remember playing the Caro Kann and getting hit with this myself. I’m still amazed at how many players fall for this. But still, it is a beautiful line. It’s also worth noting I didn’t start out with 1.e4 but with 1. Nf3 and even offered a pawn... but I guess my opponent just wanted something solid and safe. The second difference is that play usually develops slower in a 1.d4 repertoire than in a 1.e4 repertoire, which gives added flexibility to both sides. In a 1.d4 repertoire move orders and transpositions are very important, while in 1.e4-based repertoires this is not the case. The author notes that there are 2 main differences between a 1.e4 and 1.d4 repertoire. Today Chessable released Keep It Simple 1.d4. I noted that the book could be further enhanced by explaining the typical plans of tabiyas and by including model games and typical tactics. The feedback of the nearly 1,600 Chessable students of KIS 1.e4 provided a strong quality assurance process for the variations that eventually made it into the paperback version. I remember when I use to play the Scandinavian or the Caro to avoid e4 e5 lines. Mainly because I was good at positional chess but not so much tactics. Now days I love the 2 knights defense. My opponent gets his King into safety. Then he makes sure he has the center and then counters in the center. Finally begins his assault on the king. And gets crushed. Man, chess is a tough game. I went ahead and posted this so you can see how mechanical play by the book- chess isn’t! My opponent reminds me of myself at one point in my chess life. You do everything seemingly right, yet get crushed doing it. So where did my opponent go wrong? All the best to my chess opponent. I was there once too. When your winning material left and right but constantly feel like your in terrible danger. My opponent is going after my king like there’s no tomorrow. He”s planning on sacking everything to get to my king... look at his pawns barreling down to rip open my kingside and i”m suppose to be content with a extra knight and a couple of pawns? Yikes! I must have been nervous because I missed my mate a move earlier. It would of been more dramatic if I mated when I could have instead of move later... plus he could of defended the mating square with that extra move. How to win quick as White. 1. Give your opponent something to attack. 2. Give him the initiative 3. Play like a beginner 4. Then try to win back pieces he’s already won, of course he won’t let you. 5. Then mate him with a pretty Night mate. The beauty to me of this whole line is how 2. Bc4 is just a ploy looking like white is being aggressive yet the Bishop is actually never part of the attack. It’s just meant to waste a move and give black the move to bring out his Knight and begin his attack on the vulnerable e pawn. Which of course then is given to black but yet again it appears like white just wants to be super aggressive dropping his pawn in the process. It’s only with Qg4 that whites attack actually begins. And even that move doesn’t look serious.
