I was working at an eye doctor’s office on East 60th Street as an administrative assistant when the call came in that André Leon Talley was coming in for an appointment. THEE André Leon Talley. The Creative Director of Vogue Magazine. I had seen him on @oprah a few months earlier where he was confused by the audience of “everyday ordinary women” taking issue with a recent @voguemagazine cover of Karen Alexander photographed on the beach wearing a fabulous Oscar de la Renta blazer and bikini bottom. André was not ordinary and his “everyday” was unimaginably fabulous. I liked him immediately. And this was going to be my chance to “touch the hem of his garment”, so to speak. Just thinking about being in the same space as him induced sweaty palms. What would I say? When he arrived, I was surprised at how tall he was. I literally looked up to him. While he was sitting in the waiting room, I approached him. I cannot remember exactly what I said, but I made it obvious that he was a hero to me. He signed my copy of Vogue and later messengered over a brown shopping bag filled with several more signed copies with Kara Young on the cover. I would see André several more times in passing through the years as I pursued a career in fashion. We always spoke. I’m not sure if he remembered me from our first meeting, but I always saw him as my hero.
