Friday Reads Feb 12
Happy Lunar New Year! It is the Year of the Ox. I have been enjoying good food at home, and it has also meant my reading has become more sporadic.
I finished one book. That was Cast in Secret by Michelle Sagara. It is the third book by Japanese-Canadian author. Cast in Secret is the third book in the Chronicles of Elantra series that I look forward to continuing with the next book in the series, Cast in Fury. The series follows the adventures of Kaylin Neya as she learns about her magical powers and legacy with the help of various beings, including dragons.
I also started two books that were not on my list last week. One is I.Q. by Joe Ide, which I have as an ebook. It is a mystery series set in California with Black-Japanese detective as the main character. In this book, the reader is abruptly dropped into a world without a lot of explanation, and the action in the story is immediate. Reading the story, I find myself looking through the lens the author has created that demands attention but is also doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Another book I started reading this past week, but wasn’t on my Friday Reads last week is Open City by Teju Cole. It is about a psychiatrist who enjoys walks in the city of New York. During the day of the Marathon of New York City, he visits an old professor in his apartment. While he often travels around the city he calls home by foot, eventually he takes the plane ride across the ocean to his country of origin, Nigeria.
One of the books I received in the mail last Friday after I had already posted my video is Land of Big Numbers by Te-Ping Chen. It is her debut short story collection after spending many years as a reporter in China for The Wall Street Journal. I look forward to reading this book soon.
I also received a few Chinese-language books. I will describe them to you briefly.
One is a novel version of a movie called Detention. It is horror movie from Taiwan. The book includes still photos from the movie and seems very scary.
The next book is 龍頭鳳尾 or Once Upon A Time In Hong Kong, which is about Hong Kong in the 1930s.
Another books is 我的老台北 a.k.a. The City We Were which is about the city of Taipei.
And the fourth book is Thinking with Tsai Ming-Liang: 13 Faces of Contemporary Chinese Cinema Studies. I took an online course last year on Hong Kong cinema, so this was the perfect find.
While it will take me longer to read in Chinese, I look forward to getting to these soon.
From the books I have mentioned in this post, you can tell I have a thing for cities. Even though it was not my best subject in college, I am still very interested in urban studies, and learning and taking part in city life where I live, and learning about experiences in many places around the world.
The books on my Friday Reads this week are:
Akin by Emma Donoghue. It is about a retired professor in NYC who takes his great-nephew to the French Riveria on a trip to find out his mother’s past from WWII.
Rosewater by Tade Thompson. It is about a man who is a sensitive. He lives on the outskirts of a biodome that supposedly has healing powers.
China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan. This book is a carry-over from January. Rachel Chu is searching for her birth father, while her in-laws start to mettle in her business.
Alright. That is it for me this week. See you next time.

I saw Shadow last night the new action drama by master filmmaker Zhang Zimou. He truly creates new cinema and I can’t recommend this movie enough. I went on a deep dive googling more images from the film and was so inspired by the posters created for this epic film. Today’s read is a novel set in the world of the Peking Opera!! 🎭🎼🎟
For those of you who don’t know, the Peking Opera is the reason why I’ve become so interested in Eastern arts and culture; the reason why I applied for this scholarship; the reason why I’m here in Beijing. After learning about Chinese theatre at Reading University, and having the opportunity to see them perform ‘The Legend of the White Snake’ back in London, I had to find out more and continue my learning. Thus, when the option arose to write my first UOR theatre summative on this highly skilled art form, in which I compared it with theatre from the West, I must say I was absolutely buzzing! This enthusiasm was evidently noticed by my marker as I was awarded 75% - 1st Class🙇🏾‍♀️.
The text above is one I am currently studying as part of my Modern Chinese Fiction through Film module. Written by one of the most influential female writers of modern Chinese fiction: Lilian Lee, it explores the themes of theatricality, homosexuality and history. (I won’t give away any spoilers in case I’ve encouraged you to read it).
The novel has also been adapted into an award-winning film; directed by Chen Kaige in 1993. A must watch!
