Food From Around the World - Week 1

So I did it. I finally took the plunge and have been forcing myself to cook one meal or dish a day. And each week is a new country. I’ve kept it up for for 5 weeks now so I’m going to do a brief rundown of each week and my thoughts on it.

Day 1 - Mandarin Tea : Easy enough, just regular black tea with some honey and mandarin orange juice squeezed in. 

Day 2 -  Cheese Polenta : Also pretty easy. I was able to find some pre-made polenta at walmart and then I just added water, ricotta cheese, salt and pepper, and reheated it in the microwave. Tasted a lot like cheese grits. 

Day 3 -  Apyrpylchapa : Marinated and stuffed peppers. I used pomegranate juice for the marinade and that was pretty good but the stuffing had raw onion in it and I didn’t care for that too much. 

Day 4 - Chudu : Bread topped with a cheese and onion sauce. Kind of like a breakfast pizza, only with buttermilk biscuit dough instead of pizza crust. The sauce was made with ricotta, egg, and sour cream; with chives and salt to season. Pretty good but I should have used more salt as ricotta is a sweeter cheese. 

Day 5 -  Adjika with Smoked Chicken : This didn’t turn out well at all. Adjika is a spicy relish using various peppers, seasonings, walnuts, and oil. Unfortunately I think my olive oil was too old and it gave everything a funky taste. I threw it out and bought some fresh afterwards. The smoked chicken was alright. I bought a half order at the Publix for 6 bucks as it’s literally the only place I could find that served already smoked chicken. I fixed the rest of the polenta with it as well minus the cheese this time. 

Day 6 - Honey Cookies : Well they’re called cookies but they’re more like donuts since you fry them in butter instead of baking them. Sadly though, the insides were still doughy after frying so I had to pop them in the oven to bake them anyways. But drizzled with honey on top they still tasted good even if the texture was a bit off. 

Day 7 - Pan Seared Rib Eye : So each week will feature a drink, 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner),  an appetizer or snack, and a desert. While the final day will be a recipe from the show Good Eats, because why not? I like the show and there’s some pretty interesting recipes on it. This particular one was pretty easy. But I forgot to bring the steak to room temperature before putting it in the hot pan and my smoke alarm went off due to the smoke/steam. Had to open the front door and turn the fan on. But all in all it was pretty tasty. 

Final Thoughts: The cheese polenta was the best thing I cooked as I wound up eating all the left overs. Everything else wound up being thrown away eventually as It’s hard to make smaller portions for one person and unless I really, really like it I won’t eat left overs too much. :( The steak was a close runner up but I was actually able to make a single portion of that, but it was delicious and something I wouldn’t mind making again. The worst was the Adjika, by far, but I feel something went wrong there. If made right it might be pretty good.
