Chuggington Speed Fleet headcanons

*sighs* the speed fleet...my least favorite chuggington team. The team doesn’t feel as connected or interesting unlike the other teams. We have never seen all four of the speed fleet members work together, how are they even a team at all? I have so many complaints I’d like to list for the team, but that’s not what this list is about. This list is about headcanons that can hopefully give them much-needed substance.

Hanzo was quite different back when he was new to Chuggington. He experienced a great wave of culture shock due to how different Chuggington is from his homeland. As a newbie to Chuggington Railway, Hanzo was initially a bit shy and quiet. His aura was certainly less welcoming due to his initial stoic nature. He’ll only speak when necessary, which worries Vee since he accepted her offer to be the leader of the Speed Fleet. Since Daley is in Chuggington longer than Hanzo (approx:2-3 months prior), Vee enlists Daley to be on the team not just for his efficiency as a delivery courier-it’s to help Hanzo adjust to Chuggington.

Daley on the other hand, had an easier time adapting to Chuggington due to how similar Tootington is to his new homeland. His outgoing personality is certainly helpful for him asking for help and directions.

Overtime, Hanzo and Daley became close friends due to working closely together to form the Speed Fleet. Despite there being some rocks on the start of the tracks, they gradually grew to understand and uplift each other in many ways, even outside their respective jobs. Daley helped Hanzo become more open to others while Hanzo helped Daley be less arrogant and be more humble. 

The Speed Fleet certainly does races for fun. To mix things up, they’ll sometimes have races in different locations outside of Chuggington. Heck, they’ll also race with other chuggers that are local to the area.

When the team wants to have races at night, they’ll simply equip themselves with stylish, fancy lights from the repair shed so that not only they could see better at night-it’s to also make the races look good visually.

Every year, Chuggington’s country (idk what nation Chuggington is in specifically) will host the Grand Yellow Comet Race. Many chuggers representing their respective towns would travel to the nation’s capitol to race around the nation’s famous cities/towns/locations ect. for a grand prize for their railway. The speed fleet would often try to plan in advance so that all four of them could watch the race on TV. The team members would usually place bets on possible winners on their duties.

Sometimes on Friday nights, the team will have board game nights. They’ll usually play board games somewhere outside of the Depot so that they won’t disturb anyone. Most of the time, Hanzo comes out as victor at the end of each games.

Some Saturday nights are for karaoke nights. Payce’s karaoke wagon is used for this night and the location is at an old roundhouse in old chuggington (far enough to not disturb sleeping chuggers at the depot). Payce loves to sing as is considered to be the most talented out of her team members.

The list below are who is closer to the other:

Hanzo and Daley are the closest to each other. They are even considered to be like brothers from many.

Koko is the closest to Hanzo.

Payce is the closest to Daley. These two are best friends that have dated each other at some point. After realizing they are better off just friends, both mutually ended the romantic relationship between them.

Whew-this took me quite a while! The Speed Fleet is the chuggington team I perhaps have the most trouble coming up with hcs for. I hope these are to your liking! :D

Im home with the boys again today because Dylan has a fever and a sore throat. My sister in law, along with my mother in law, got themselves stuck in the snow, so I told her that if she was stuck closer to her house that she should just stay home, and if she was stuck closer to my house that she was welcome to come by and spend the day. She decided to stay home and I dont blame her. Id want the rest too, and the streets are all icy, plus I get to play and dote on my little sick guy. Sometimes theyre really whiny and difficult when theyre sick, but Dylan just wants to lay down and watch cartoons. We built a big train track earlier and after I finished feeding Jackson I saw him just lying in the middle of the tracks all pitiful. I go so overboard when theyre sick. He was lying there and I asked him if he felt like he was gonna be sick, and he said "no, but I think I have a fever in my throat." Poor baby. Then I offered to carry him into our room to watch some Chuggington and I gave him a spoon full of honey for his throat. It might seem overboard but when I was a kid things were... different. And my doting is with good intentions. Who doesnt want to be taken care of when theyre sick? Someone to make your favorite comfort foods, rub your back, snuggle under the covers, put your favorite shows on.. all kids need that I think. Honestly, everyone needs that. Anyway, were here laying in bed watching cartoons and life is good.

About Astra:

Astra is a compartment engine who can carry extra Chug Patrol gear and equipment.

Personality:

She is relatively a kind-hearted, eager-to-please teenage girl; she is always happy to do whatever job she is given with a can-do attitude. While there are occasions once in a while when her excitable nature can get the better of her, she is still focused and very capable. Sweet, lively and encouraging, Astra is always ready to do her part, whether it's keeping the tracks safe as a Chug Patroller, or just making everyone smile as a friend.

Astra In Action:

Astra is fresh from completing training, and is the youngest full-time Chug Patrol member. (Wilson does not count; he is only a part-time member as he is still a trainee) She often tags along on emergency callouts with the rest of the squad.

She'll volunteer to do other jobs whenever the oppurtunity arises as she simply loves helping and enjoys a brief change, but in her spare time, she is hobby photojournalist (She has a retractable smartphone-like camera located and stored where her pop-up wingmirrors are; inside the hatch with the Chug Patrol emblem on the door to access her engine placed adjacent to her face, I will draw this in the future)

Ever since she was a trainee, she journals photos and sometimes videos of her everyday life and adventures, usually just cute selfies of herself or group photos. She shares them online with some of her old friends who also partake in this hobby. She also finds her camera useful for reporting track and trackside hazards to Chug Patrol.

Additional facts:

She was a Chug Patroller in Tootington quite some time before moving to Chuggington. She was a top student as a trainee and moved up so quickly, she had graduated while still in the chugger equivalent of teenage years. (Very rarely do chuggers become fully-fledged when they're young. Hodge, Zephie and Emery are the only canon chuggers in this scenario) She had a very close relationship with her old mentor before he suffered a tragic accident that permanently put him out of commission, but he would still be put back together and preserved by a museum. Astra had been invited to Chuggington around this same time and was sad to leave him behind, especially in the sorry state he was currently in, but he reminded her that he'd always be with Astra in her heart. She did manage to recover before she left for Chuggington, but didn't open up to the others about this situation until much later.

She also likes stargazing, and the Planetarium (A new location on the outskirts of Chuggington suburbs) is one of her favorite places.

She has a playful and adventurous relationship with Wilson, and is his best friend to be with whenever Brewster and Koko aren't around. She's usually the Chug Patroller Wilson is on patrol with if not with Jackman or by himself.

Like Wilson, she too would form a father-child-like relationship with Jackman.

She also has a bit of an aunt-like relationship with Calley and an uncle-like relationship with Asher.

Often while they're in CPHQ, Asher likes to listen to chill music on the radio and Astra in particular sways side-to-side or even full-on dances to the music on the turntable.

When she's not with Wilson, Brewster, Koko, or Chug Patrol, she also has a dynamic with Zephie cuz girl power lol

Astra's creation and design was inspired by the Plarail Disney Dream Railway Mickey Mouse Rescue Train by Takara Tomy:

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a perfect real-life resemblance of this locomotive no matter how hard I tried, however the main body does seem to loosely resemble a E6 series Akita Shinkansen:

Now, I'm under the impression that Mickey rescue train was a freelance design, but if by some crazy chance any of you know a better real-life resemblance, do comment below, I'd appreciate that. (^ー^)

Annnd I think that's that, everything you need to know about Astra! I'm hoping to make actual 3d orthos for her, but those are quite tedious and challenging, so for now, that side view and posed render I made back in 2022 will suffice. I wanted to get her revealed before any other Chuggington OCs before it gets too late into the year... and I still need to draw Margot The Monorail for @lomotunes2008 😅...

I was planning to get this released a bit earlier in the day, but additional editing and new content on Youtube kinda got in the way of that :P

Been thinking about Mtambo recently and his worldwide travels before coming to Chuggington as mentioned in Season 1:

Mtambo in his early days would travel around the world to many places - from Zimbabwe to Antarctica.[1] During his travels on safari, he once came nose to nose with a rhinoceros that began to charge, but Mtambo honked his horn so loud it ran away. Deep in the jungle, Mtambo raced a jaguar, and it ran out of breath before he did. There was also a time he was lost in the desert, and along came a camel that guided him out.[2] - Chuggington Wiki

I realized I could get a few flashback episodes out of this for my fanseries. Mtambo would tell these stories to Astra, who is of course new in Chuggington and hasn't heard these yet.

The same could work for Piper, as in Season 6 we see her become a more common chugger at the safari park and even helps Mtambo from time to time. (Ex: S6E13: Piperactive, S6E43: The Record Breakers)

And if you read my headcanon for Rosa, this is build-up to her becoming Mtambo's apprentice at the Safari Park when she moves up in training.

Chuggington Headcanons: Astra

Just thought I'd give a bit of extra background on my main OC Astra The New Chug Patroller.

She has her own group of friends back when she was a trainee in Tootington. I have yet to fully establish who these chuggers are but long story short, they were just fun-loving little kids who had their own little adventures together, not quite as crazy as some we've seen from the show, but then by their 'teenage' years, they all had their own paths around the time she applied to Chug Patrol. One or two may visit Chuggington in the future. One of them looks something like this:

As adventurous as Astra is, she has always had the tride of a Chug Patroller since before she started training for the squad. She cares deeply for her friends and strives to ensure their well being. If someone suddenly goes missing, doesn't show up for something they're supposed to, or a feeling just sinks in that something's gone wrong, her first instinct is to drop everything and go look for them and she won't be having any nonsense about it. Sometimes however this means she gets ahead of herself, but she pulls herself together in the end and always focuses on the task at hand.

Astra's livery was slightly different before joining Chug Patrol. She was still mainly red, but had less blue. At some point I'll post a finalized design.

She's generally unphased by bullies. Of course Chuggington has never really had any, but back in her early childhood in Tootington, she is quick to defend her friends their insults like the encourager she is. (There weren't too many, mostly troublesome chuggers who were in due time sent away, but also some nasty passengers or city residents)

She developed her interest in stargazing when she and her old friends camped outside of the city one night.

So uhhh, I may have done some serious cooking last night...

After finally revealing Astra to you all, I felt it was imperative that you got to know what she sounds like as well, horn, engine and voice.

The sound file for her horn is SoundDogs, Trains, Horns & Whistles - Train Horn Blasts Short 2X 01. Clean, although those of you fellow Thomas fans might know exactly where else it's used...

I also gave her her own custom variant of the snow horn from S2 for the sake of it.

Her engine SFX are from SoundDogs and Soundelux, mixing the following sound files:

Her US voice is based off of Emma Berman who starred in Pixar's Luca, and also currently stars in two Disney Jr shows. (One of which being Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, which is where I pulled the voice clips from)

I based her UK voice off of Twinkie Jaiswal, who voiced in the Hasbro series Ricky Zoom, (which I pulled clips from) and also starred in Kidz Bop, Hilda and the Mountain King, and various other roles.

I used x-minus.pro online to clean the voice clips.
