2024 Fic Writer End of Year Roundup

1. How many words did you publish on AO3 in 2024? 619,247... with the way A03 calculates I don't think that's entirely accurate but that's what it says... I would take off 225k and guess it's more around 350-400k

2. How many fics did you complete this year?

18, those event weeks really had a chokehold on me

3. How many in progress or ongoing fics did you start this year?

I have only posted a couple of WIP this year. I have stared at least 20 more, but have yet to post anything on them. Hopefully, I will have them all organized by this evening so I can start with my 2025 goals of getting them all done or at least well on their way!

4. What was your favorite thing you wrote?

I had the best time with What We Deserve!! It has to go at the top of the list.

Honorable mention would be Mother Save Us From Your Twisted fate just because it came out of nowhere and I think I started the first part and finished it in a day or two like a madman and posted without really giving it a second look. Truly a fic of strange passion.

5. What piece was your most experimental or different from your usual style?

probably Lighthouse in the Woods. Exploring a poly dynamic in a fic I didn't originally intend to be poly was an interesting choice for my brain lol but a fun and rewarding challenge!

6. Did any fics surprise you - either while writing or their reception?

Under the Weeping Beech shocked me just because it demanded I write it but there was very little reward with how sad it is. Y'all know I love sad angsty shit but I always seem to find a way to make everything ok in the end. Not so much this time but I simply couldn't make myself write it any other way. This was how it was supposed to be

7. Do you have a fic you wrote and loved that went under the radar? (This is your sign to reblog/repost it!)

Everything kind of went how I expected it to this year, but a fic that went under MY OWN PERSONAL RADAR was When Even Moonlight Burns. I adore the outline but couldn't make myself get serious about it this year. I'm waiting for my depraved self to rise to the surface for that one. It needs to be a beautiful disgrace

8. Who is an artist that inspired you?

I'm not sure I could name anyone without naming EVERYONE. If you have created Azris, you're on this list.

@queercontrarian inspires me daily with her work. Her attention to detail and the fashion work in her pieces are notches on my bones, that's how permanently they have changed me. I find myself staring at them for entirely too long to be appropriate and keep coming back to revisit my favorites!

@elleybug has a vision for her art that speaks to me on a cellular level. Every single piece supplies me with endless amounts of emotion that just make me want to create and create and create!

9. Who is an author that inspired you?

This question is really testing my memory because every time I read something I get inspired. All of you are just too damn good so if I forget to tag you it's only because I am stupid or I simply haven't been able to get to your amazing work yet BUT I WILL... and not because you don't belong on this list!!!

so so many this year! Special mentions to @jules-writes-stories, @the-darkestminds, @mistandmemories who I really consider to be the big three of 2024 for me! Following along each of your beautiful stories this year has been a highlight!

11. Did you do any collaborations? How did it start?

not this year!

12. What accomplishments are you proudest of?

Everything I managed to finish lol. I was worried it would be nothing at all!

13. What did you learn about writing or creating this year?

I work best when I am just dishing out what's been gnawing at me, and trying to participate in too much just for the sake of it was too draining!

14. Any advice you’d like to share with new or aspiring writers?

It's fanfic, take the pressure OFF and just write the thing! If there is a story in your heart you really want to have exist in the world, you need to get it out and let it breathe! Don't focus on numbers or style or craft while you're just getting started. Have fun and create because you NEED to, everything else can come later.

15. What are your creative goals for 2025?

I have approx 12347576412 projects I would like to get written... I'm here to mass produce simply because I can't keep up with my brain. LOL. But truly if I can get one full multichapter fic completed this year I will be very happy!

idk. People like what they like, so I wouldn't say it is underrated, but I think Between Us (more Azris) is so much better than its stats might have one believe.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Everyone is so different so this is hard. I have found the most success and pleasure with writing when I don't put any pressure on it and chase the brainworms.

What is a writing style/technique that others do really well that you'd like to get better at?

um fluff? LOL JK JK (sort of)... I would love to be able to get my point across in a simple and straightforward way. Still poetic just in fewer words. Some people do this so beautifully it hurts and I am always in awe!

Is there a character you were surprised you enjoyed writing as much as you did?

Eris is HARD to write. He is so specifically clever and brash and it's hard to get right, but it's way more fun trying than I thought it would be. I thought I would be miserable trying to get him 'right' (whatever that means).

Describe your writing process from idea to posting/publishing

Normally an idea will pop into my head while I'm at work - my job is physical and can be pretty mindless, so it's perfect for coming up with entertaining stories! I normally end up running through the plot of what I want to happen a few times before I even get to writing, so I have a good mental outline of the story. When it comes to the actual writing part, I tend to go full speed ahead for hours. Also most of the time I'm smoking a lil bit, I find being just a lil stoned can help move the writing process along. I veeeery rarely edit my works except for mistakes I notice as I go. And once I'm done, I post right away, pasting it into the app and editing it to look how I want. I give myself as little time as possible to second guess my writing lol

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I'm normally a plotter, I like to know what I want to happen, but if fun ideas come to me in the moment then I go with them! Very rarely will I have an idea that I don't think about and plan for at least a few hours beforehand.

What do you listen to when you are writing?

So many things... Taylor Swift, Halsey, Chelsea Cutler, Blackpink, and more, but those are the main artists I listen to while writing. I also end up having stuff on in the background, lately it's been between Grey's Anatomy and Gilmore Girls.

What’s your drink of choice(while writing)?

I love me a monster ultra, strawberry dreams has been my fave since it was put out! Coffee too, and water of course (I'm a big water hoe)

Promote yourself! What’s your favorite thing you’ve written?

Probably You Can Have It! It's such a fun, cozy world that Reader lives in, and I'm sooo excited for all the plans I have for her, Feyre, and Rhys!!!

Share a fic of yours that you think is underrated/deserves more love.

This was tough... You guys give all of my stories so much love, none of them ever really feel left out! The only one that I think deserves more love is probably Omega Needs, it's my first fic on here and I love how I've changed the dynamic between Feyre and Rhys, and all the shit going on in the Spring Court. I just love them 🥹

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Just! Keep! Writing!!! I have been a new writer at so many points in my life, and every time I've enjoyed myself, but this time feels different. I've pushed myself to keep writing and not reread my fics to death before posting, and that has helped immensely with how I've approached writing this time around. Also! Write what YOU want to read! I know that I don't feel motivated when I'm not very interested in the story, so make sure that you like what you're writing!

What is a writing style/technique that others do really well that you'd like to get better at?

Ooo definitely the style where the pacing matches so well with intense emotions, like the punctuation and everything changes to match it. And also poetry! I love the way people can capture a feeling so perfectly.

Is there a character you were surprised you enjoyed writing as much as you did?

Definitely Shitty Azriel from my tears ricochet. I'd thought I might have a problem making him hateable but still like... acting sweet to reader even with all the lies that she didn't know about. But I didn't, and the response was an overwhelming "fuck you Azriel" (which I delighted in, thank you guys 😂)

Hello, hope you’re doing well I just wanted to thank you for curing my disability. You’re probably wondering what the fuck, let me explain.

I’m really dyslexic and I only really learned how to read in the sixth grade and it’s still mostly impossible for me to write a grammatically correct sentence. My dream as a kid was to one day read a big chapter book, once I got to high school I could read, in fact I was a very good reader, but I believed that I couldn’t read. Years of people telling me that I’m stupid and that I will never be able to had rubbed off on me. So I experienced the medium of literature through audiobooks. The night of New Year’s last year I stayed up till 2 AM in my tired and delirious state I went on Ao3 thinking it would be funny if I tried reading about an acotar crack ship. I didn’t like any of them, but I was determined to find something I found decent. And that is when I found the fic that for the longest time I pronounced as Kratos, for some reason ( now I know how to say it ) Kerosene. It was then that I did something I thought impossible, I read for three straight days. Anyway I love reading and you helped me realize that.

I don’t know how to express how much I love this medium, and that you were a big part in helping me realize how beautiful words on a page can be, not just hearing them read to me, but actually reading and experiencing what the characters are going through. As silly as it sounds your fanfiction about gay fairies going on a Brokeback mountain adventure to defeat an evil Lord and having a sex along the way change my life and my art.

I’ve been meaning to write this to you since I found out who you were, but I didn’t wanna be vulnerable on the Internet, or with a stranger but I’m past that immaturity so, here you go. Thank you.

An Azris sickfic I’ve been playing around with … thought I might get to it this year but didn’t. Maybe 2025 will be its year … 👀👀

The coup attempt had been Eris’ idea. His failed plan that had led them all here now. Every single one of his brothers and his mother had given there full support. Now, as the spear of fire that had been meant for him, landed in his brother’s chest and ate away at his flesh, Eris felt himself go numb. It wasn’t like him to hesitate but he couldn’t move. Shock rooted him to the spot as Beron aimed another volley straight at him. Just as the bolt of Autumn fire got close enough that he felt the heat on his cheek, large, cold arms circled around his middle and pulled him away into shadow. Only then, did he scream.

I got into writing fanfiction because I was a fandom nerd just like any other fandom nerd, and the canon blurbs were not enough to satisfy my brainworms! The year was 1999, and the show was Roswell or Buffy.( I can't remember what I started with first) My and I wrote handwritten collaborative fan fiction back and forth in notebooks. I started Azris because Our Bodies Possessed by Light possessed ME, and I couldn't get enough. There were only 100 or so FF at the time, most WIP, and I devoured them instantly and needed MORE.

They call me Miss Adventure because every single excursion I embark on, something goes wrong. All completely preventable situations, all because I am so desperate for adventure that I abandon all reason for madness.

Azriels shadows are not sentient, they are only extensions of him. BUT he lets everyone believe they have their own minds so he can touch people and not have them cringe away from his hands. That way he can comfort and blame it on the "little pests". When his shadows caress Eris in moments of distress before they allow themselves to fall in love, and while they still "Hate" each other, it’s really as if its Azriel’s own hands because he can't help himself and wants to know what Eris feels like with out the pressure of admitting that.

Literally anything. I know this feels like a cop out answer but even just a single emoji from a guest account is very encouraging and makes me smile. The fact that you went out of your way to read AND comment anything at all is amazing to me.

20- daddy Beron!! A popular one lol. Modern Au where a powerful man seduces and preys on young men before making them disappear when he gets bored with them. His eldest was happy to turn a blind eye as long as he and his brothers stayed safe. That was until his father brought his latest conquest home.

Ok so this one is a bit different… it’s a Nesta Centric fic on how things might have gone had she chosen not to be forced up into the House of Wind to “heal” …

A little Neris… a little Azris…. And a little Nessian … but mostly just Nesta clawing her way into the life she deserves all on her own. … I hope I get to it someday soon ish… *unedited*

Nesta woke with a start, the night still clinging tightly to the world even as the sun began to peel it back bit by bit. She blinked, slow to remember where she was or how she had gotten there. It was pitiful really, laying on the floor of a dirt hovel, so reminiscent of the place she had been with her father and her sisters no so long ago. All for the same reasons too. Pride, rage, despair, emotions she pushed down each morning and vomited up each night in her dreams. For two weeks now, Nesta had been traversing the human realm in search of food and shelter and a way to make it on her own without her sister’s help. Without her sister’s mate’s help. She ground her teeth at the thought of them and their perfect little family. Feyre may have been devastated in the end that Nesta had not folded to her demands, disguised as a helping hand, but Nesta had seen the gleam in Rhysand’s eye. Even if he was angry for his mate, he was relived Nesta was gone. The only reason she had ever spent their money to begin with was to anger them so she supposed her “evil” plan worked. Now look at her.

Might as well be sleeping with the pigs. - She thought bitterly as she plucked straw from her dirty dress. Every morning, after reliving her last moments in the Night court, Nesta squirmed with regret. Would it have been so awful to have just done as they had said? She would at least be clothed and fed.

After the regret began to fade, righteous indignation carried her into the rest of the day. Yes… it would have been so awful. No one was concerned about Nesta, only concerned about what Nesta destroying herself might cost them. No, she had not been fair to either of her sisters. Hell, Nesta could admit she had been downright cruel to them, but under no circumstances could she have sold herself into their way of life the way Feyre had tried so desperately to get her to agree to.

You’re going even if you have to be tied up and hauled there.

That had almost done it. Those few words of demand from her younger sister had placed the other option at the end of her tongue but she had held back. It wasn’t until Feyre had admitted that they were having her apartment torn down and rebuilt that Nesta had fully made her decision. Well, her mouth had made it for her. She remembered being enraged at the fact that the one choice she had made for herself in all her miserable life had been ripped away from her with misguided claws and not much else.

Her blood had burned liquid silver, it was all she could see in her eyes and whatever words she had spoken had seemed to ripple down through the core of the land. It had been as if something long forgotten had opened its eyes after a long slumber. She couldn’t remember what those words had been now but it was enough to send the rest of her sister’s family running.

The Next thing she knew, she was being unceremoniously dumped in a heap at the border of the human lands by a bunch of shadows and a very angry bat.

Fans of the four way mating bond between Nesta, Cassian, Eris and Azriel I see. As far as I’m concerned it’s a SUPERIOR MASHUP. OK…. Here you go. To summarize:

- I think it would work out much the same only you have to ignore my a/n at the end of Embers.

- In JFT Eris seeks Az out in a very vulnerable state.

- In this scenario let’s say he was looking for his mates but found Az instead. Eris is so out of it that he doesn’t realize it at first (bc there will be an Azris bond they just don’t know it yet).

- Nessian hadn’t told anyone about their bond with Eris yet.

- I think the Azris bond would have been budding for a while at this point and the only one who could tell it was about to snap was Nesta (bc of course she sees it coming.)

- this is why she wins the best at the end of JFT with Cass 😏

Now I kind of want to write it and mash them up for real

Popping in to say hello, I hope you are having a delightful week! I am here to inquire after your favorite tropes and themes. We all love a nice enemies to lovers story. What else? Which ones do you have the most fun reading? Which are the most enjoyable for you to write? I hope to create something you love as much as the azris community loves you! (Impossible, but I will strive for it nonetheless)

I am also excited to inform you that your gift is officially a work in progress! I fear it's running away from me. The elves and I might need to put in some overtime.

Santa I'm blushing. Let those legs grow Santa! I think that means you're having fun with it so I know that I will love it! Enemies to lovers is certainly a classic as is reluctant allies. I think if these two just fumbled their way through one trope right after another I would find myself kicking and screaming into my pillow the entire time lol.

Basically my view on tropes in fic is ...

HOWEVER, some of my favorites to read and to write include:

proper groveling or really intense chasing arc

I love sexy and smut as much as anyone else but what realllly gets me going are those accidental brushes or stares that last too long. The almost kisses or the barely there touches
