Season Announcement Wednesday
Tumblr media
Happy hump day to all, and to all I am highlighting a hometown theatre group’s next season. This is the last theatre company I had the honor to work with before my move back to Fresno, and they are a company I will always prioritize seeing when I visit the Bay Area. Let’s take a look at the 2020-2021 season at Pacifica Spindrift Players!
Shows/Dates: Guys and Dolls (August 7th - 20th); Circle Mirror Transformation (October 2nd - 18th); Rumors (November 6th - 22nd); 2 Across (January 5th, 2021 - January 31st, 2021); Violet (February 19th - March 7th); Silent Sky (April 9th - 25th); TBA Musical (Summer 2021)
Venue/Address: Pacifica Spindrift Players Theatre @ 1050 Crespi Drive, Pacifica 94044
Website: www.pacificaspindriftplayers.org
Facebook: “Like” them at- Pacifica Spindrift Players
Twitter: “Follow” them at- @SpindriftTweets
Description: Pacifica Spindrift Players is an often-featured company on my blog and social media. In addition to seeing their wonderful productions of Little Shop of Horrors, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Becky’s New Car, I have had the pleasure to perform in their productions of Barefoot in the Park, I Hate Hamlet, and Cabaret, as well choreographing last season’s Heathers, the Musical. To say that I’m a fan is an understatement, so I hope you share my enthusiasm in supporting this gem of beach side theatre. Go see a show!

There’s drama outside the drama class
Thomas Volpe
Staff Writer
Circle Mirror Transformation is not satire. The five characters, who share in a six week drama class in a Vermont community centre basement, may start out seeming like caricatures. But by the end of Annie Baker’s Obie Award winning play, the lives of these individuals become remarkably genuine. Not only that, the stories they tell and the secrets they reveal make them out to be exceptionally fragile and imperfect creatures.
The characters Marty (Jill Harland), her husband, James (Mark Whelan), Theresa (Pip Dwyer), Schultz (David Frisch), and Lauren (Laura Jabalee) all come together over six weeks to take part in a drama program run by Marty. The story unfolds over a series of quick vignettes, none longer than five minutes. These scenes, separated by darkness while the actors reassemble in different positions onstage, showcase different classic drama exercises and breaktime conversations.
At the beginning, it’s amusing and almost cringeworthy. These characters don’t know anything about each other, but are subjected by Marty to comical movement exercises, vocal warm-ups, and extremely bad one-word group storytelling. Marty seeks to break down the walls put up by each character through different bonding techniques, not all of which have the intended effect of pulling the group closer together. Little by little, pieces of these characters’ backgrounds invade the drama class, and their delicate, broken pasts endanger the camaraderie that has been building amongst the group.
The characters in the play are subtle and extremely complex. They are perfectly juxtaposed with the often simplistic and restrictive exercises and games Marty has them take part in during class. Forcing them to carry out a conversation with only one phrase or word and freezing them in place to act as inanimate objects, like beds and trees, are just a couple of examples depicting the rigidity of Marty’s class. This limiting environment has the opposite effect of highlighting the traits unique to each character, further bringing them to life, even within such a closed off setting.
Circle Mirror Transformation truly shows a transformation of both the characters and the drama class from the beginning to the end of the story. What starts as an awkward group of distrusting people in what seems like a parody of a drama class, ends up mutating into an in-depth look at very real and incredibly complex characters. There is drama here that is definitely not part of the drama class.
Presented by Play Practice Collective and directed by Heather Braaten, Circle Mirror Transformation runs until October 18th at the Storefront Theatre. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.securesaseat.com

My Barksdale Debut
Tumblr media
I found myself back in Richmond, Virginia last week. For reasons unknown, I agreed to accompany the Puppet to visit one of his argyle cousins. The less said, the better. While there, I took in the production of Circle Mirror Transformation currently running at Barksdale Theatre. Well. I must say I was surprised and thrilled to find myself the central character. Kudos to the director for the brilliant stunt casting! If you attend, I highly suggest a seat down center with a good view of the mirror. I am visible through the entire production. Truly, I'm not sure what my costars were doing or saying, as my visage commanded the stage. How the designers knew exactly what I would be wearing on the evening I attended, I do not know. Theatre magic at its finest!! One caveat though. My mother attended the next week, and she was stunned to discover that I was not actually performing that evening. In a truly confounding bit of casting, my mother said she actually saw HERSELF in the mirror onstage. I pity the audience who missed my breathtaking performance. My mother suggested that perhaps my reflection was only there the night I attended. It is certainly a conundrum! If I am not there to see myself in the mirror, does the tree really fall? Well, I haven't the necessary time to truly contemplate this as I am late for my feng ski lesson, but it seems the safest bet to suggest that, if you want to be sure not to miss my showstopping performance as "Woman in the Mirror," you buy a second ticket and invite me to attend with you! You will not be sorry -- I do a particularly riveting cross and uncross of my legs about forty-five minutes into the show. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled!!

Season Announcement Wednesday
Hear ya, hear ye! This week's Season Announcement Wednesday post is highlighting the 2016/2017 season for a theatre company which has produced some fine shows over the past couple of seasons. Even though I have only seen a few of these productions, the word-of-mouth for the ones I have missed have inspired me to ensure that I don't miss many more. With my ticket already purchased for their season opener I am excited to present Los Altos Stage Company's upcoming season!
Shows/Dates: Assassins (September 1st - 25th); Circle Mirror Transformation (November 17th - December 11th); Yellow Face (January 26th, 2017 - February 19th, 2017); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (April 13th - May 7th); [title of show] (May 25th - June 24th)
Venue/Address: Los Altos Stage Company Theater @ 97 Hillview Avenue, Los Altos 94022
Website: www.losaltosstage.org
Facebook: "Like" them at- Los Altos Stage Company
Twitter: "Follow" them at- @losatosstage
Description: Los Altos Stage Company is one of the South Bay Area's notable theatre companies. I received my introduction to this group when I saw their production of Urinetown, followed by their production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Both productions were excellent, and made me ready for more. This season has titles written by some of theatre's strongest names, starting with John Weidman/Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. Tomorrow is their preview (which I will be seeing) with an official opening on Friday, the 2nd. Do yourself a favor and make every effort to check Los Altos Stage Company's excellent season. Go see a show!
