trans (and allied) community of tumblr! I need your help!

a friend of mine who is a cishet guys is desperately trying to be supportive of his trans loved ones but he just Doesn't Get It because he himself has never viewed his gender as separate from his physical form or his presentation (which are all 'default' to him). We are talking vanilla settings, no mods, only had tattoos because he has easy access to them

so does anyone have any food resources for explaining gender as a concept that is intangible? or even any good metaphors. I told him it was like gravity and I think it started to click (you can't see it, you can only see its effects, and if it's not disrupting you you'll easily forget it is there) but I don't think it was the full eureka moment for him

essentially i need to help this cis guy unlock the part of his brain where the gender is stored so he can gaze at it in awe and that he feels confident in supporting other people without putting his foot in his mouth

Cis+ people are the only real cis people tbh. Like if you've never thoroughly examined and questioned your own gender before coming to the conclusion that you do identify with what you were assigned at birth, how can you even claim with confidence that you are that gender?

I like to imagine Xie Lian checking in on heaven every once in a while for business or something and now that heaven barely has a central government and people are more relaxed without any one scary force up their asses all the time he sometimes comes back to some pretty weird stuff. After all, every god is a nosy drama queen and everything has the potential for a competition. Imagine if one day some smaller martial gods got bored and started an arm wrestling contest and whoever won started bragging about it which caused some other martial gods to want a piece of the action. Because every martial god is overly competitive by nature, this eventually gets weirdly out of hand and now the top martial gods are having the most legendary arm wrestling tournament in history. Xie Lian walks in in the middle of it, bewildered; “Oh, no thank you, I couldn’t possibly, I should be quick, San lang is waiting for me—“ he answers but a simple “come on, your highness!” and a recap of the latest events is all it takes to convince a top martial god to give it a shot.

Across the room, Feng Xin just obliterated another round and is on a crazy hot streak. His spirits are high and he’s ready for his next victim as he looks across the table, and the opponent in his view is none other than Xie Lian.

A cold sweat runs down his back.

Of course it ends with Xie Lian vs Pei Ming, the grandest showdown they’ve seen in a great while, and Xie Lian going home that night to that San Lang of his with another weird heavenly trophy to put in the display case they had to make for all these weird prizes he keeps bringing home from work. Who knew gods really are more idle than ghost kings!

I’m sure I’m so late to this conversation but I’m so confused/curious about what intersex disorder Cardinal Benitez is supposed to have. Like- it’s implied if not outright stated that he presents externally as a “typical” male and doesn’t have ambiguous genitalia (that in combination with the idea that all that was requested by the papacy was a hysterectomy and not any kind of “sex reassignment” or genital alteration- which I highly doubt would have been accepted anyway- more likely anything more and he would have been defrocked, the church being how it is. Though also possible he has a microphallus or hypospadias which both could easily be overlooked at birth/in the seminary, as well as being common in cis men and therefore “acceptable”) and we know for certain that he has ovaries and a uterus- that much alone makes me think persistent Müllerian duct syndrome. But Benitez also says that his chromosomes would make some classify him as a woman, and individuals with PMDS have XY chromosomes. But it also can’t be de la Chapelle syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome, giving him a mostly “typical” male body (potentially smaller build, less hair, genital variations like a microphallus or Hypospadias) but XX or XXY chromosomes, because a uterus and ovaries aren’t present in those conditions. Ovarian tissue can be present, but not a fully developed set. (Amendment: there are, though rarer, cases of a developed uterus and ovaries in de la Chapelle syndrome. There’s very limited data about this specific variation, and things will vary from person to person, but it’s usually caused by congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which causes significant health issues. If Benítez has de la Chapelle syndrome, it would most likely be due to CAH, and he’d be quite unwell without treatment. Though again, it’s under-researched and reported, especially variations that don’t cause major health issues. Much rarer and more complex, but certainly possible that this is his situation- potentially from exposure to certain hormones in utero. It’s complicated. Thanks to everybody that helped me explore this subject/syndrome further!) Because the uterus and ovaries have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to exist, I’m assuming the mention of chromosomes was a mistake/misunderstanding and Benitez is supposed to have PMDS, but that condition is pretty damn rare- not that this writes it off, but it’s something to consider. Still, unless I’m overlooking something that seems to be the best fit?

It’s probably just details being muddled by the writers, but I think it’s interesting. And the ambiguity is kind of nice, because people can tailor their headcanons how they see fit. Lots of potential for representation in this one character. (No matter what body your Cardinal Benitez has I love him. Forehead kisses muah muah)

So.

In almost every way I personally prefer the book over the donghua up to where we currently are, mainly because I feel it lacks the look into Xie Lian's inner monologue that we get in the books. And I feel that that is very integral to understanding Xie Lian's character.

However!

The scene where Xie Lian breaks down and screams about the truth being revealed to Lang Qianqiu, because then what was all of this for? Exquisite.

Yes this scene hits hard in the book, but God do the va's, especially the English one, fucking pop off on this.

Him getting more and more heated before finally, (reason I love the dub for this scene specifically even though I'm not as fond of the rest of it), shouting that he thinks his advice are the ravings of a sad child?!!

Then followed by him seeing the soft look in His Cheng's eyes and immediately snapping out of it to start desperately apologizing, ending with his soft broken little "San Lang, I'm sorry. I think I've gone mad".

Uaghhhhhhhhhhhhh

I think about that voice line constantly.

Also the deep profound sadness we feel during the last episode of season 2 when he's on the mountain, the ache of all his 800 years of history. The trees are dead, the buildings are in ruins. The donghua did such a good job here of showing us just how OLD and tired Xie Lian is.

The solemnity of the whole trip.

Him greetings his parents and laying down exhausted from everything that's happened recently.

Fuck they did a good job with this.

As well as the beautiful horrible bit of desperate hope in his voice when he hears the crying in his mother's coffin?!!

Xie Lian is so passive that I sometimes forget he has an automatic fight response rather than a flight response. Like that time pei ming fell from the ceiling and Xie Lian, startled, almost chopped him in half; only reason he didn’t was because he caught himself mid-swing. The only prank Hua Cheng could never play on him is hiding and jumping out to spook him because he’d get decked by accident and poor Xie Lian would feel so bad…
