1500 Broadway: Times Square's Architectural Gem
1500 Broadway, also known as Times Square Plaza, stands proudly on the iconic Times Square in Midtown Manhattan. Completed in 1972 by Arlen Realty & Development Corporation, this 33-story office building, towering at 392 feet, occupies a prime block on Broadway between 43rd and 44th Streets. The building's striking bronze aluminum facade and tinted-glass windows make it a notable feature in the Times Square skyline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Rich History
Replacing the historic Hotel Claridge, 1500 Broadway was designed by Leo Kornblath & Associates and intended to house theaters and office space. The building originally boasted an arcade, a grand lobby, two foyers for a movie theater, and Times Square Studios. Its cinema, opening in December 1972 with "The Poseidon Adventure," marked the first new movie theater in Times Square in 37 years.
Despite its ambitious start, 1500 Broadway struggled with low occupancy rates during its early years. By the mid-1980s, it began to attract tenants and achieved near-full occupancy. Over the years, the building has changed hands several times, with notable renovations including the installation of large advertising screens and the addition of Times Square Studios and ABC Studios.
Architectural Features
The building's facade features bronze aluminum and tinted glass, with a pair of curving news tickers and a billboard. The original arcade and theater lobby were replaced in the late 1980s with a sleek, modern entrance designed by Clark Tribble Harris & Li. In the late 1990s, Walt Disney Imagineering redesigned the lower floors to accommodate Times Square Studios, enhancing the building's media presence.
Tumblr media
Recent Developments
In recent years, 1500 Broadway has continued to evolve, attracting a diverse range of tenants, including the Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips restaurant and Carlo's Bakery. Despite some challenges, including a significant loan and vacant space, the building remains a vibrant part of Times Square.
Critique and Legacy
While some critics have described the building as a "banality" compared to its predecessor, the Hotel Claridge, 1500 Broadway's impact on Times Square is undeniable. It stands as a testament to the area's evolution from a theater hub to a bustling business district.

The new landscape of the city:
The BT Tower was sold by BT Group for £275M and is now owned by MCR Hotels which will be turning it into an upscale hotel. The city of London doesn't lack iconic hotels - Claridges, The Standard, Ace Hotel (now called One Hundred Shoreditch, Hoxton Hotels - what angle could they be taking? What needs will this new iconic building fill for their guests....
Milan + Paris Fashion Week:
Fur made from denim - really great fashion innovations from Glenn Martens and team. Alongside the streaming of the run up to the show on a 24 hour watch. Something about the way this brand operates - it's almost fake transparency but not in a bad way, in a way like you are in the in group and we're not pretentious. We know what poppers are....It really reminded me of Big Brother culture - the voice, the absurd fashion, the faces on the screen watching you. The people physically in the seats feel less important because we can't see their faces but the digital, peering in....there's something there Mr Martens.
Age of Surveillance - embracing humanity and unexpected. A 24 hour stream is a bit of an invasion of privacy but letting people in can create this dynamic environment, tailored to what the audience wants. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. These kind of live streams are related to mukbang culture, the need to be comforted even though the people that we're watching may not be that comfortable.

A lot of the runway feels less fun, full of capes, fur (!!!), less risk. Recession time, no time to mess about :( London and New York even though lack of investment feel real - exciting, bigger brands want to show in Milan and Paris which is fair enough but there is no heart. I'm sure they'll make some money.
RE: New McQueen - interesting, how does one recreate a house that has so much passion, and turn it into their own thing, their own commercial thing? I think there's more promise in Sean McGirr's McQueen than in the original Gucci debut. There's something there in not making something super commercial on the first thought.

Here is our guide to the most enchanting and exciting things you can experience in London.
Step Into History at London's Museums
London is an absolute playground for the culturally curious. The British Museum, in Bloomsbury, houses a vast collection of world art and artefacts and is dedicated to human history, art and culture. Marvel at the Rosetta Stone, the Egyptian mummies, or the Elgin Marbles. Best of all, entrance to this cultural wonderland is free!
The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in Kensington should also be on your radar, especially if you are a fan of design and decorative arts. Here you can see everything from antique furniture and clothing to ceramics and sculptures from various periods and cultures.
If you are fascinated by natural history and science, then the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, both in South Kensington, are a must. Walk beneath a massive blue whale skeleton at the Natural History Museum, or explore the wonders of space travel at the Science Museum.
Stroll Through London's Royal Parks
For those looking for some tranquillity amid the bustling city, London's royal parks offer the perfect retreat. The expansive Hyde Park is home to the Serpentine Lake, Diana Memorial Fountain, and Speakers' Corner. In nearby Kensington Gardens, you can visit the enchanting Peter Pan statue and the serene Italian Gardens.
St. James's Park, with its picturesque lake and views of Buckingham Palace, offers a truly regal experience. Don't forget to visit the tranquil Kyoto Garden in Holland Park, a Japanese garden that is especially beautiful during autumn.
Visit Iconic Landmarks
No trip to London would be complete without visiting its iconic landmarks. Start with the majestic Tower of London on the north bank of the River Thames, and while you're there, get a glimpse of the precious Crown Jewels. Just a stone's throw away is the magnificent Tower Bridge, a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
Next, visit Buckingham Palace, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II. Try to catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony, a colourful display of British pomp and ceremony.
Also worth visiting are the historic Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and the Big Ben. Don't forget to take a ride on the London Eye, a giant ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames that offers spectacular views of the city.
Explore Vibrant Markets and Foodie Spots
If you want to experience the city's vibrant food scene, head to Borough Market. This gourmet food market offers a wide variety of artisanal food and drink from all over the world. For vintage clothing, antique furniture, and collectables, Portobello Road Market in Notting Hill is the place to go.
For a unique dining experience, try one of the diverse food stalls at Camden Market, or settle down for an afternoon tea, a quintessential London experience. You can find traditional tea rooms all over the city, but some of the most famous are The Ritz, The Savoy, and Claridge's.
Take in a Show in the West End
Finally, no visit to London would be complete without experiencing its world-class theatre scene. Catch a show in the West End, London's equivalent of Broadway. Whether it's a long-running classic like 'The Phantom of the Opera' or 'Les Misérables', or a new hit musical, you'll be dazzled by the talent and production quality.

By day she was Marsha Claridge, Fashion model and celebrity to the world. Known for her iconic looks and shows and magazine covers. But by night she was known, only to a select few, to be the top secret agent known as Paragon.
Her mission tonight? Protect a journalist from assassination. Jack Ryder was digging too deep into Santa Priscan politics and had caught the attention of some... bad people.
Marsha spied on the party from above on a wire, watching Jack through her binoculars as he talked to people. Quite boring but Marsha saw a red dot appear on Jack's suit suddenly. Using her daring acrobatic skill she swinged down and tackled Jack and saved him from a sniper shot.
The crowd went crazy and screamed and ran. Marsha stayed on top of him and smiled down at him.
"Good evening, Mister Ryder. Call me Marsha. And you are welcome." She winked.
