I got to see these guys in action at the top of Mt Howard in eastern Oregon. It鈥檚 such a crazy story鈥攖he whitebark pine does not release its cones easily, so Clark鈥檚 nutcrackers pick the seeds out of the cones, stores them in hundreds or even thousands of seed caches over a single season, and then can return unerringly to them for food in the winter. Of course, they don鈥檛 retrieve all of them, and that鈥檚 how new whitebark pines are born. What a life cycle! It was fun to see them flying overhead, doing their thing. . . . #birdillustration #birdart #birdpainting #birdpaintings #birdart #birdartist #birdartists #birdsofinstagram #pnwbirds #oregonbirds #gouacheillustration #gouchepainting #naturejournal #naturejournaling #clarksnutcracker (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgANeXFpu5p/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day 7 on the JMT and we hiked about 9 miles from Bear Creek to Natalie Lake. I was quiet most of the day. A quiet mind equals a quiet mouth, I suppose. There would be a number of days where I found myself with little to say and I always enjoyed them. Our hiking day was short. We finished hiking around 1pm so I had plenty of time to sit by the lake and think. I had pitched my tent within a perfectly rounded tribunal of silver pines. Large grey and black Clark's nutcrackers were cawing at each other as they stabbed their long beaks into the hardened pinecones of the tree, carefully perching themselves at the pentacles of the branches where the line cones grew. A few days earlier a fellow hiker, 'Conservative' (from Day 3), told me that the Clark's Nutcrackers were largely credited with saving the silver pine. Rust blight had previously threatened to wipe out the species altogether and naturalists could not figure out how to promote propagation to effectively save the tree. For every 10 trees they planted, only 1 grew. It was not until they watched the Clark's Nutcracker that they got their answer on how to save the silver pine. The Clark's Nutcracker is the only bird that can penetrate the pine cones' famously hard outer shell. The Clark's peck at them not terribly unlike a woodpecker. Researchers then found that the Clark's would hide the seeds to eat later in exactly the kind of place the silver pine liked to grow - in and amongst gnarly and inhospitable rocksides. These primordially hardened trees loved a desolate living area and the bird's just so happened to like hiding their seeds there. When researchers mimicked this method they found they were able to successfully plant the silver pine at a rate of 6 out of 10. The researchers had found their solution and the Silver Pine was saved - all thanks to a strange little grey and black bird with a scratchy song. . . . #jmt #jmt2021 #johnmuirtrail #johnmuirwilderness #johnmuir #clarksnutcracker #silverpine #hike #hikersofinstagram #hikemoreworryless #hiker #hikecalifornia #California #californiaadventure #Sierra #mountains #mountain (at John Muir Wilderness) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSvUXHIHfK-/?utm_medium=tumblr

This bird, Clark's Nutcracker, is the only bird that can crack the pinecones of the whitebark pine, and is therefore the only animal that can spread the seeds of the endangered tree. Unfortunately this one here was waiting for tourist's handouts. . . . #jasper #jaspernationalpark #lakelouise #canada #canada150 #bird #birding #endangered #clarksnutcracker #travel #wanderlust #wildlife #nikon #d3200 (at Lake Louise, Alberta)
