it’s quite fascinating how, up until this point, despite being framed as the traditional protagonist, jodio is given mostly traits that are associated with previous villains in other parts. think about it, he demonstrates greed, ambition, and a tendency towards excessive violence and short-sighted decisions. he’s even explicitly diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder and calls himself a sociopath, traits that are often associated with villains due to the lack of empathy it causes (which is a whole can of worms about the stigmatization of mental health in popular fiction, but i’m willing to give araki the benefit of the doubt and wait to see which direction he takes the story and that trait in particular in).

on the other hand, dragona is given the most traits we associate with classic heroism, being the leader and mediator of their group who advocates for holding back when jodio gets out of hand and the one that gets to experiment with the macguffin, as well as being nicer and having almost as much focus dedicated to them as their brother. the fact that, as a dark skinned person of color with an ambiguous gender identity, they’re also a rather nontraditional hero, especially in a japanese piece of media, adds another interesting layer to this.

there are two main parallels we can draw to these two: giorno and bruno, and dio and jonathan

jodio and giorno both obviously embody a lot of dio’s traits, being ruthless and power-hungry, although jodio is certainly more emotionally open and driven by personal gain than reserved and idealistic, more like a young dio than most of his sons were. whereas dragona, as a calmer team leader who follows the rules but still needs the protagonist to bail them out of a tight spot, has tons of parallels to bruno, but the fact that they’re set up as the underdog brother with more traits the story associates with heroism when their brother is a clear reference to dio brando of all characters should not go unnoticed

what i’m trying to say is that upcoming emotional drama is inevitable and it will HURT

I'm still disappointed with the official colors so here's my version of the gang (and by mine I mean my mutual's, who's the main colorist of the fandub project that came up with all the colors).

Notes about the design choices:

Dragona's flower crown used to be pink and green until the whole chapter 8 thing where they state they don't wear pink. We ended up with the blue flower crown after playing with some colors. However, they do wear pink nail polish and Usagi wears blue-- which was done to imply where Usagi got the code name and show how inquisitive he is from the start. Coincidentally, he was given a pink beret before the flower crown was changed.

Usagi's color scheme is from my cosplay, which was based on a couple of panels in the fan colored version by The Chromaverse; the fandub's main colorist insisted on doing a purple Usagi so it stuck. The purple and pink beret look was made to have him model after Doppio's appearance and also at the time I had a bright pink beret and a purple body suit. He was later given some light lip gloss at the main colorist's suggestion.

Although not shown, Paco's color scheme is mostly primary colors with greys to show how simpleminded he is and contrast him with the other gang members who show more complex colors. We wanted him to look like a stereotypical surfer bro, which is why he's rather tan with blond hair. Gold is used as the go to metal for the gang, so both Paco and Dragona have gold jewelry and accessories that match. Going with the simple look, we didn't color in his tattoos like Dragona or alter his eye marks.

Jodio and Dragona share the same eye color with Barbara Ann, who shares it with her sister Holly Kira. We had Jodio be the only one with a bright lip color rather than both him and Dragona. Not much is changed with Jodio's appearance beyond going off the colored artwork we had if him. In the fandub, we recolored him to resemble Giorno during the Stand fight while Dragona was made to resemble Hermes.

You say "Imagine Babyface Star Swap" I raise you one BETTER. Imagine Clash and Talking Heads. Where Joseph is rendered in even fucking WORSE condition as the shark stand tears into his fucking throat with a meaty chomp, then essentially plays hostage with him as Narancia frantically tries to chase them down. There's no breathing, no hamon, just endless water filling every orfice, dorwning him out for second and minutes that tick away as he's teleported to and fro without a care, like the world's worst chew toy.

OH OW YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT-

God and it’s going to be made even worse by the fact that Joseph, just like Giorno, is going to be able to piece together exactly what’s going on and why Narancia isn’t talking correctly, but he doesn’t have time to explain to everyone else before MONCH

And to making things even WORSE, the water would normally be the PERFECT PLACE TO USE HAMON. Liquids are super conductive and all it would take was a quick zap and bam things would be infinitely easier, but nope now he’s stuck as a hostage which is even worse than being flat out helpless because he's actively being used against his teammates

but for some fun...... what if this is when Hermit Purple starts getting a bit more present, and maybe in his panic..... it starts to lash out :)

Squalo didn't even realize anything was wrong at first. One second things were fine, Clash had a solid hold on the Standless member of the team and he was completely helpless, then suddenly the next it felt like vines were tearing into him from the inside out

This distraction, this hesitation is all Narancia needs to shoot the fish in question full of holes

however........ it takes an extra bit of time to calm Joseph down. Hermit Purple is wrapped all over him, holding his injuries closed and poised to attack and tear into anyone who gets close. In his current state, Joseph can't fully tell who's who and what's what, and while the vines aren't actually that strong the unknown factor of them and what ability they have is enough to warrant a good bit of wariness.

Similarly to Baby Face, Trish once again comes in clutch and is able to calm him down and do a bit more healing (maybe with some subconscious help from Spice Girl to make the thorns soft and harmless), and in an attempt to get a laugh of him she jokes "welcome to the Hamon Stand User club"

at the very least, it does work :D

Every single day I wish not only that Diavolo's anime tattoos were more detailed but that the red stripes on the sleeve's debut design were kept as well

Getting ahead of myself here but the red could have played on his "crimson" motif a little bit. In a similar way that the anime sometimes had Kira's eyes flare up red and purple as a transitional effect of summoning Killer Queen, there could have been a cool, brief fiery effect of Diavolo's red stand aura flaming from the stripes on his arms as King Crimson is summoned.
