(just remembered that XIV picked out a unique new name for himself and we never got to hear it)

there aren't enough fics on the father-son relationship (i've crafted in my head) between cleon xiii and cleon xiv
brother day used to take dawn to picnics when he was a baby and no one can take that from my mind
#im sorry im kinda in love with how much day cared for dawn#with dawn saying that he wanted to call day his father#i just-#i cant-#someone write more fics about them#or i'll be forced to do it myself#cleon xiii#brother day#cleon xiv#brother dawn

rewatching 1x09 of foundation and that scene where brother dusk shows brother dawn the mural and once he leaves dawn puts in the lenses so he can see color and he realizes that dusk actually painted six and not three birds, that it was a setup and dusk knew and now knows for sure about his differences... goosebumps

Season 2 of Foundation feels a lot less subtle than season 1. Season 1 wasn’t perfect (everyone’s brains turned off when Phara was on screen) but the Warden’s religious fervor felt over the top, and the queen feels more like she’s playing checkers than chess against the Cleons. And maybe in the latter case that’s the point, that the Cleons aren’t as sophisticated as they used to be but it doesn’t feel good to watch.
This episode confirmed that replaced clones have all the memories of the Cleon they replaced minus the events of their death so that they wouldn’t know they died but XIV would have known he died if he woke up one day not colorblind and now right handed. XIV fascinates me, I want flashbacks.
I feel the writing has kept up on the Gaal/Salvor/Hari side of things. Gaal and Hari have this fascinating thing where they’re both livid with each other for mostly understandable reasons yet there’s still this affection between them. They don’t hate each other, despite everything, they’re just so angry with each other. It helps that they both had good reason for doing the things they did and the other person has to see that or they may see it eventually. It feels so solidly like a family squabble. The anger can’t drown out the affection and aside from Gaal and Salvor’s relationship it’s the most compelling thing happening this season.
I do enjoy that Poly’s back.

#no no please share#also it's *wip* sharing not clean copy sharing#also foundation fic is so rare! :3
Ok, you've convinced me...
Just so there's no confusion, it's a fic of the 2021 tv show, not the novels. I was rewatching the show a couple of months ago and I had some... feelings about Cleon XIV. So, here it is.
Brother Dawn stood at the edge of his windowsill. The cold night air made the hair on his arms stand on end, and the smell of freshly fallen rain filled his nostrils. Brother Dawn felt nothing.
At first, he was in denial. “We suppressed the memory,” Demerzel had told him. “It could lead to further trauma.” Dawn had scoffed at that. He had felt plenty traumatised already.
“So- So I’m that thing from the tank?”
“You are as much Cleon XIV as you were before,” Demerzel had assured him. “But yes, you inhabit the body of your replacement that was once in the cloning tank.”
Dawn couldn’t help but laugh. He had viewed his replacement – or rather himself, now – as some kind of insidious outsider, waiting in the wings to usurp his place once his brothers discovered his abnormalities, and now that had happened, and nothing changed. He was still just Dawn. He was still as broken as ever.
Then came the tears, like a flood. He sank to the floor, covered his eyes and tried to strangle the sobs escaping his throat. Demerzel had rushed over to hold him, and began to whisper soothing platitudes into his ear. He didn’t know how long they had stayed like that for, but the light from outside had dimmed noticeably when he finally opened his eyes again.
After that, the nothingness. When his tears had dried up and his sobs receded and all the evidence that he had been crying were his puffy eyes and the wet tracks running down his cheeks. Demerzel slowly rose to her feet beside him.
“Empire,” she said, “this process can be a painful and difficult one. If there is any assistance you may require, you need only ask.”
Dawn tried to speak, but he found his mouth too dry. He cleared his throat with an ugly, uncomfortable sound, and tried again.
“I think I would like to be alone now, Demerzel.”
“Very well, Empire,” she said, and gracefully made her exit.
When the doors to Dawn’s bedchambers shut, he was met with silence. Dawn’s stomach dropped. He had been holding out hope that this was all a trick, that Demerzel had lied to him for some reason and he was still himself, but his confirmed it. He couldn’t hear the ringing in his ears.
Cleons were more susceptible to tinnitus than most. It was a trait that Cleon I had, that he refused to have corrected, which would have been a simple procedure. All Cleons were taught at an early age that he did this because, “No one may be allowed perfection, especially Empire. There must always be something to humble them, lest they forget their humanity.”
Dawn had a fascination with ground cars from an early age, but especially with the “dirty” ones, the ones with the exhaust pipes and loud engines. If he ever caught wind that one of them was to used for some official procession or some such event, he would hide out in the garages where they were kept and try to catch the low growl of the engine. This, naturally, led to an accelerated degeneration of his hearing capability. Eventually, it got to a point where he wasn’t able to sleep at night from the ringing in his ears, and as such needed to keep his windows open at night to allow some passive noise into his room.
It wasn’t until he once again heard this complete silence that he realised that he hadn’t hidden away to hear the engines of the ground cars; that was the other Dawn, the original. It wasn’t until then that he had fully realised that he was a copy. If he had any tears left to shed, he would have shed them.
@essie-essex, tag accepted, tagging @lettuce-tv and @queenlua (if you two take tags), and anyone else who wants to. :P
As for my part, ahaha! You caught me out a bit, because I am right now mostly in edits, but: there is another Horrible Crossover that I sketched a little before putting it down at least until I finish the present one.
This one is Time to Orbit: Unknown/Star Trek Prodigy, and it's mostly tooth-rotting fluff, set in the very beginning of TTOU (so the moment when a Starfleet crew would have made a very big difference). I really think we need more Prodigy fics which are focused on the crew itself, and getting them play off of familiar characters is an excellent way of getting to know them for me!
Here's the beginning:
It's movie night, and the mood has just been thoroughly killed by talking about synnerves, abducted brains and zombies. I open my mouth to try and lighten the mood again, at least for the duration of the movie, but the screen suddenly switches to static.
"Oh great," Tinera says. "The zombies are chewing through wires already, huh?"
But before I can answer, or try to figure out what just went wrong with my movie, a crackling voice speaking completely period-inappropriate Extalingua comes out of the speakers.
"This is captain Gwyndala of the USS Prodigy. Courageous, can you hear us?"
It's not a voice that anyone knows.
Everyone looks to me, and I say, "This obviously isn't part of the movie."
Tinera stands up, balling her hand into a fist, "All right, whose fucking idea of a joke is this?"
It's blindingly obvious from the looks on everyone's faces that it's no one's.
The voice continues: "We're glad you can hear us. We apologize for the intrusion and the lack of visuals, but our communication protocols aren't easily compatible, so we had to hijack a speaker. We're requesting assistance."
The Friend, sitting next to me, draws in a sharp breath.
"What's your status?" it asks before anyone else can reply. "Are you in danger?"
"No," the voice says with an embarassed little chuckle. "We're just… a little lost. We've had some navigational problems, and would like to check against your records to triangulate where we are."
"Where you are is speaking to ship travelling at near light speed," Denish growls, looking deeply suspicious.
"It's not easy on the impulse engines," Captain Gwyndala says almost sheepishly. "But we can keep up. Jankom, can we give them visuals yet?"
Another, slightly rougher voice comes through: "Visuals ready, captain."
"With your permission, Courageous crew?"
"Go ahead, captain. Give us your camera feeds," I say. Because whatever the hell is happening here, we need more information.
I look at Tal, but ke's already on it, tapping rapidly to set up a recording of the screen. Ke is typing faster than I've ever seen kem type, and kes mouth hangs slightly open in disbelief and wonder.
"Please tell me it's aliens," ke murmurs, looking up sharply.
And then the screen switches on again, and Tal is vindicated for the rest of kes life.
There are two aliens staring us down from the screen, both vaguely humanoid. The taller one has light blue skin and fleshy-looking braids that give off a faint glow. A slightly shorter second humanoid sits alongside the first, their skin a matted purple, and their dark gray hair sticking up wildly. A small tail, or maybe tendril, curls out from the nape of their neck, and swooshes around curiously.
They're wearing the same kind of uniform: form-fitting jumpsuits, grey, red and black stripes extending over their chests. Small badges sit above where a human heart would be, and there are single gold pips on both of the aliens' collars.
"That's better," the blue-skinned humanoid says, and I realize that must be captain Gwyndala. "And we have visuals through our scanners, too."
I stand up. Because apparently this is first contact, and I'm the captain of a first contact ship now.
"I'm captain Aspen Greaves of the spaceship Courageous," I say. "Tell us about your situation."
#i've had this idea swimming around in my brain for a while but i only just managed to get a beginning i was happy with#i don't know if i'm using my semicolons 100% right but i don't really care too much about that#i'm not sure about the way i've started it. maybe just normal linear past tense would be better here#but overall i'm more happy with this than anything else i've written in the past year-or-so so that's something at least#foundation#foundation tv#also big thank you to my beloved mutual brotherdusk#she really helped to give me proper motivation to get something substantial done of this#i've got a couple other scenes written out but i've never got a beginning i was happy with before

literally just realised that obrecht is always placed behind XII's right shoulder when he's enabling him, but is at at XIII and XIV's left when he's ruining their day. XII's right hand man ONLY. is this anything.

Me: *Removes my cat from my lap to do something else.*
My cat: Father is…evil? Father is unyielding? Father is incapable of love? I am running away. I am packing my little rucksack and going out to explore the world as a lone vagabond. I can no longer thrive in this household.
