Cleon Weekly Challenge: "We're Getting Too Old for This with bonus Rosemary"

Chris dumps Rose on Claire and Leon, who subsequently leave her with Sherry and Jake.

“We're getting too old for this,” Leon groaned, as the sound of the screaming baby started up again. “What exactly did Chris say when he dropped her off, again?”

“I already told you,” Claire rolled over so she was facing him. “He said here take this, I can't watch her right now. Then left.”

“I hate him.”

“You and me both,” Claire yawned, glimpsing the clock on Leon's bedside table. “Well it's almost 5. Might as well just call it on her sleeping anymore.”

“I guess 40 minutes of continuous sleep is enough.”

“Wait.” Claire sat up. “You're right.”

“I am?” Leon asked, sitting up as well. “I don't actually think 40 minutes is enough sleep.”

“No not that. That we're too old for this.” Claire got up, grabbing a sweater from a nearby chair. “Get dressed and gather her stuff, and I'll grab her.”

“Okaaay,” Leon said, suspicious, but still followed her instructions.

An hour later they stood in front of the yellow door, Claire banging her fist against it.

The door opened, Jake towering over them with a scowl. He had clearly been asleep, still shirtless with a pair of sweatpants on, and his slightly grown out hair sticking up in weird angles.

“What the fuck are you doing here at this ungodly hour?” He rubbed his eye, then took a second glance at Rosemary. “And why the hell is there a baby?”

“Here you go,” Claire said, shoving the baby into his arms while he was still caught off guard.

“Jake?”

Sherry’s voice came from behind him, before she ducked under his arm, her confused half-asleep gaze landing on Rose. “What's going on?”

“This is Rosemary, and here's her stuff.” Leon set the diaper bag, and car seat in front of them.

“Chris will be back at some point. Bye, love you, Sher!” Claire said, her and Leon quickly turning to go down the steps.

“Where do you think you're going? Come back here!” Jake yelled.

“At some point?” Sherry called.

“Yeah just call Chris he has all the details,” Claire yelled back, before sliding into the driver's seat.

“Should we feel bad about this?” Leon asked as they drove away.

“Maybe, but I'm exhausted, and they're young and have super powers and stuff so I don't,” Claire said. “I'm too tired too feel bad.”

“Oh yeah, sleep.” Leon leaned his head against the headrest. “I no longer feel bad.”

Garden Gnome Protection

Warnings: Swearing (In my head, Chris and Leon would follow up leads on Steve over the years with Claire. Never wanting her to go alone). This is one of those missions.

Chris was leading the way into the dark, dilapidated split ranch house. Leon brought up the rear, while Claire followed Chris. As they moved up the stone walkway to the front door, Claire grabbed one of the ugly garden gnomes along the pathway.

"Here. This will keep you safe."

Chris turned, rolling his eyes annoyed with his sister's antics to keep things light. Chris set it on the grass his sharp gaze returning to the door in front of him.

"Be serious, this is your mission," Chris lectured her quietly.

"What? You mad I couldn't find a boulder?" Claire asked.

Leon let out an involuntary snort, causing Chris to turn and glare at him. Leon straightened back up the moment Chris' glare turned to a smirk.

"That's funny, huh, Kennedy? Your boyfriend tell you what happened to that motorcycle you got him?" Chris smiled widely.

Claire turned to look back Leon who sighed, knowing he was in trouble.

"What happened?" Claire asked, hands on hips.

"Baby, not the time. Let's finish this..."

"Destroyed. Gone. Nothing left, not even a tire," Chris imitated an explosion with his hand.

"Thanks asshole," Leon snapped back, voice low.

"Do you even have a license, geez, babe. Whatever, let's go."

The Call Was the Last Straw

Warnings: Swearing, arguing, hitting

The call was the last straw and no matter how much he loved her Leon was putting an end to this. All the years of searching for Steve, taken by Wesker and most likely disposed of once he'd finished testing on him.

Chris was too busy to see the way his sister was spiraling over the loss of this boy. It was on Leon to pull Claire up the way she'd done for him, multiple times.

Leon slammed his hands against the steering wheel as he neared the coordinates Claire had sent. Absolutely convinced this was where Steve was Claire hadn't even waited for him to arrive.

Leon saw her rental parked and empty, but turned when he saw a short trail. Leon ran down the trail, his heart stopping when he saw Claire walking along the edge of a frozen lake.

From where he stood he could see parts were melted under the strong sun. It didn't stop the tortuous chill from seeping so deeply into his bones he zipped his bomber jacket. That's when he saw Claire stomp on ice, then drop down into the hole she'd made.

"CLAIRE!!!" Leon screamed from where he stood.

The adrenaline was rushing through his body as he ran towards the spot she'd slipped in. Leon didn't think twice before diving in, knowing she'd fight him, but he couldn't lose her. Wouldn't lose Claire.

The shock through his body had him wishing he'd made a better decision, but the moment he caught sight of movement, he reached out. Internally, he sighed in relief when his arms wrapped around a body and not a fish. As expected she began thrashing, but Leon pulled them both up on the bank.

"I'll kill...Rookie? What the fuck? The facility is underwater..."

Leon pinned Claire beneath him as she struggled, her anger causing her to lash out.

"Stop. Just stop, Red, okay? It's over. Done. Steve Burnside is dead! You aren't. So stop!" Leon raised his voice over Claire's cursing.

Claire started slapping at his chest, hitting him with no real strength or intent. The tears streaming down her face.

"It's not fair. It's...We survived..."

Leon lifted her up in his arms and rushed back his car. Before rushing to Claire, he'd turned the heat up on high and pulled a blanket from the back.

"I've rented a place nearby, we're going to stay there for the night. Warm up, I'm not leaving you, Red."

The exhaustion Claire had been fighting overtook her quickly. Those beautiful eyes closing on and off as he drove.

"Thanks for coming, Rookie. I...Thanks," Claire yawned before finally closing her eyes.

"Hey, gimme ten more minutes before you close those eyes okay? We'll get you in the shower, in warm clothes and then we'll sleep, okay?" Leon nudged her gently.

"Hmm. Okay."

This was the final straw and no matter what it took, Leon would save Claire. Leon didn't care what it cost him.

A: Unless otherwise stated in the prompt(s), they can be as long or as short as you want! Keep in mind new prompts come out weekly so please pace yourself and don't feel obligated to write lengthy epics. Seriously, even 100 words or less is perfectly fine!

Q: Is NSFW allowed?

A: Yes! Just make sure everything is properly tagged and everything involves adults.

Q: Is there an ao3 collection that these can be posted to? And is it required?

A: There is a Cleon Writing Challenge collection maintained by ShortAttentionSpanFics that is available to be used but it is not required to add them there if you do not wish to (or you forget lol).

Q: Can I use AI to write these?

A: No. I'll skin you alive if you do.

Q: How do the "Fill-In-The-Blank Title" challenges work?

A: I'll give you something like "Leon and Claire go ____" and you just need to think up a word or words to finish the title. For this example it could be something like "Leon and Claire go to the beach" or "Leon and Claire go home" and then you take that title and create a short fic from that while using the now complete title.

Q: What about the Quotes/Scenarios Challenges?

A: The scenarios ones are probably pretty self explanatory. Just make a fic based on a basic scenario with everything else left up to you. For the Quotes challenge you just need one character in the fic to say the given quote, doesn't have to be Leon or Claire. Again, everything else is left up to you.

Q: Are the bonus challenges required?

A: Nope! Purely optional.

Q: What is that "Round 1" and "Week 1" thing on the prompt?

A: That is mostly for my benefit in keeping things organized. Each "Round" consists of 12 weeks as that is how many unique combinations of Main challenge and Bonus challenge there are before they repeat (ex. Scenarios/Location, Quotes/Object, Scenarios/Word Count and so on). This is all just to make sure I don't start repeating it too early. You can also use this to specify which prompt you're using but it's not at all required.

Q: I like the prompt but I'm not really feeling it for Leon and Claire. Is it ok if I use it for a different pairing/fandom?

A: Sure, I don't mind. Just don't use the Cleon specific tags or add them to the ao3 collection when you post it. Maybe just mention where the prompt came from if anything.

Q: I like a prompt but it was posted months ago. Can I still use it?

A: Yes! These prompts don't have an expiration date. New ones are just added weekly. If anything just specify what prompt is being used in your notes/summary. Or use the "Round/Week" thing mentioned above.

Q: Can I use these prompts for a longer/multi chapter fic?

A: Sure!

Q: I don't write but one of the prompts inspired me to create fan art. Can I still use the #cleonchallenge tag?

A: Absolutely!

A: Sure, just send it to my Ask box. Keep in mind that prompts are scheduled months in advance so it might take a while to get to your suggestion. I'm also not always logged into this account so it might take a while for me to notice the Ask. But please still send them in!

A: Nobody will hate you for skipping prompts. These are just for fun and you should never pressure yourself to complete them if you're not feeling up to it. <3

Too Old

Warnings: Swearing, gun violence, grenade, beheading of zombies

Gunfire filled the halls of the dilapidated hospital on the outskirts of a tiny town in VA. The hospital long ago abandoned by Umbrella, but only recently discovered by TerraSave during an outbreak clean up.

"How many fuckin' people worked here? Shit!" Leon shouted as he reloaded his 9mm.

"Fuck! We're getting too old for this shit," Chris responded.

"GRENADE!" Claire yelled before tossing it, giving Chris and Leon mere moments to move.

The two men dove into an open room, slamming the door. After the explosion went off, Chris opened the door, Leon following.

Claire was moving through the bodies, using her machete to take off the heads of any moving undead.

Leon chuckled when Claire turned back to them smiling brightly, covered in blood and bits of undead flesh.

"Not all of us," Leon shook his head amused.

"You guys should've asked for help," Claire teased, wiping the blood and dead flesh off.

"Hah. Your boyfriend's the one that thinks we're getting too old for this," Chris tossed back.

Leon pulled Claire against his side, holding her close. This was one of those rare times their paths crossed and Leon wasn't going to miss a chance to hold her.

"Bullshit, old man. That was absolutely you. I've got my woman keeping me young..." Chris stuck his fingers in his ears before obnoxiously singing loudly.

"LALALALA! I can't hear you..."

Claire laughed, burying her face in Leon's neck finding a moment of solace in the woody scent of his cologne.

"We still gotta clear the lower levels. You comin' Red?" Leon looked down at Claire.

"Like old times, huh?" Claire chuckled, accepting Leon's backup 9mm.

"Old times or too old, not even sure anymore," Chris mumbled.
