Cleon Weekly Challenge: "We're Getting Too Old for This with bonus Rosemary"

Chris dumps Rose on Claire and Leon, who subsequently leave her with Sherry and Jake.

“We're getting too old for this,” Leon groaned, as the sound of the screaming baby started up again. “What exactly did Chris say when he dropped her off, again?”

“I already told you,” Claire rolled over so she was facing him. “He said here take this, I can't watch her right now. Then left.”

“I hate him.”

“You and me both,” Claire yawned, glimpsing the clock on Leon's bedside table. “Well it's almost 5. Might as well just call it on her sleeping anymore.”

“I guess 40 minutes of continuous sleep is enough.”

“Wait.” Claire sat up. “You're right.”

“I am?” Leon asked, sitting up as well. “I don't actually think 40 minutes is enough sleep.”

“No not that. That we're too old for this.” Claire got up, grabbing a sweater from a nearby chair. “Get dressed and gather her stuff, and I'll grab her.”

“Okaaay,” Leon said, suspicious, but still followed her instructions.

An hour later they stood in front of the yellow door, Claire banging her fist against it.

The door opened, Jake towering over them with a scowl. He had clearly been asleep, still shirtless with a pair of sweatpants on, and his slightly grown out hair sticking up in weird angles.

“What the fuck are you doing here at this ungodly hour?” He rubbed his eye, then took a second glance at Rosemary. “And why the hell is there a baby?”

“Here you go,” Claire said, shoving the baby into his arms while he was still caught off guard.

“Jake?”

Sherry’s voice came from behind him, before she ducked under his arm, her confused half-asleep gaze landing on Rose. “What's going on?”

“This is Rosemary, and here's her stuff.” Leon set the diaper bag, and car seat in front of them.

“Chris will be back at some point. Bye, love you, Sher!” Claire said, her and Leon quickly turning to go down the steps.

“Where do you think you're going? Come back here!” Jake yelled.

“At some point?” Sherry called.

“Yeah just call Chris he has all the details,” Claire yelled back, before sliding into the driver's seat.

“Should we feel bad about this?” Leon asked as they drove away.

“Maybe, but I'm exhausted, and they're young and have super powers and stuff so I don't,” Claire said. “I'm too tired too feel bad.”

“Oh yeah, sleep.” Leon leaned his head against the headrest. “I no longer feel bad.”

Messy Confession

Claire moved to her front door the constant, insistent knocking concerning. Opening the door, Claire found herself pressed against the wall behind her the door slamming shut.

  Leon held Claire’s neck in his hands, the expression he wore startling her. Before she could speak or even react, he pressed his mouth against her. The kiss was heavy, desperate, but filled with care.

  “We need to talk…I can’t…”

  “Rookie, now is not…”

  “Stop! Just be quiet for a minute, okay? I need to say this and if I don’t…”

  “Okay, but we’re…”

  “I mean it, Red. Just be quiet!”

  “Okay.”

  Claire was honestly worried, but she’d let Leon say whatever he needed to.

  “I can’t do this anymore. Every time I’m on a mission all I think about is getting back to you. Praying that you haven’t been pulled into something even worse than I’m facing. That whole fucking thing with Wesker’s sister…It killed me to see you so broken and injured. Knowing I should’ve been there. I know you don’t need my protection, you never have, but dammit, I want to back you up. I want to be your partner just like I was in Raccoon City. I know you took a different path, but if you keep ending up back in the fight, why can’t you fight with me?! Dammit, I don’t understand. So, please explain it to me, because I can’t Claire. I can’t accept it anymore.”

  Claire cupped his face in his hands, using her thumb to wipe away a stray tear at the corner of Leon’s eye. Leon closed his eyes, covering her hands with his, a single sigh escaping his lips. Leon’s entire body relaxed under Claire’s touch, a familiar calm coming over him.

  “Rookie, I’m sorry. I want to fight, but I can’t do it your way. I watch all of you come back from whatever shit you were in…Each time you are missing another piece of yourself. I know because I was there. I lost a chunk of myself in Raccoon City, but because you were there, I filled that whole back up. What I do now, how I fight keeps me from losing another piece. I fight here, to give all of you a place, a safe place to come back to. It feels like I’ll lose all of you if I don’t try to keep the home front safe. I am so sorry it feels like I’m abandoning you, but I’m not. I promise you, I would never, Leon.”

  “Claire…Fuck it! I need you in my life more than once a year!” Leon had pulled away and punched the wall.

  “Well, I think that is our sign to leave…”

   Leon looked around the corner and saw Chris, Jill, Sherry, Rebecca and Barry. No one spoke as they each patted him gently on the shoulder, all of them aware of the toll they all bore from Raccoon City. As well as each mission after.

  Chris was the last one out, but stopped, clapping a hand on Leon’s shoulder.

  “About time you told her. Later sis,” Chris smiled before exiting.

  “I tried to tell you we weren’t alone…”   “Yeah…I love you, Claire Redfield. Now you tell me…Where are we going from here.”

  Claire smiled, taking Leon’s hand in hers.

  “My bedroom. We have more than once a year to plan for, so tonight, we relax.”

  Leon chuckled, following her like the obedient puppy he was and always had been for her.

Edward Gnomen

Claire pulls Chris along behind her, dragging him towards the Halloween fair that she’s been waiting for all week. It’s not exactly what they’re going to be doing, more the fact that it’s been months since she’s been able to see Leon and Jill, and she hasn’t seen Chris outside of visiting each other at work whenever they’re in town either. So, in short, it’s been a long time since they were able to hang out, or all get together. 

“Can you slow down?” Chris asks, sounding exasperated.

“No. You were too busy sleeping on my couch to get up on time, so now we’re late.” 

“There is no late, this is a casual get together. You just mean we’re not the first ones here.” 

Claire doesn’t respond, though she does loosen her grip on his wrist, even if only by a small margin. They pay at the entrance, and then head off to find Jill and Leon since Chris recognized Jill’s car in the parking lot. The duo find them near the food stalls, chatting. Claire throws her arms around Leon, then kisses him on the cheek. 

“Hey, darling.” 

Claire hugs Jill too, much gentler with her. 

“It’s good to see you,” Jill says as Chris wraps an arm around her waist. 

“Sup,” he says, nodding at Leon. 

Leon nods back, and Claire leans down to smell the food he’s holding. 

“Is that pumpkin bread?” 

“Yeah, want a bite?” 

“No, I don’t like pumpkin. Do they have anything else?” 

“They’re all fall flavors. Everything is either pumpkin, cinnamon, or apple,” Leon says before taking another bite of his bread. 

“Aw, I don’t like those,” Claire says, scrunching up her nose. 

“I know, babe. But I brought you something else.” 

He pulls a lemon hand pie from the grocery store out of his bag, and holds it out. Claire snatches it, ripping the top open with one finger along the top. She happily starts eating while Chris turns to Jill. 

“So, what have you guys done since getting here?” 

“We mostly just looked around. We wanted to see what they had going on before you got here.” 

“And?” 

“And there’s a corn maze, haunted house, and some carnival type games over there. You know, and people dressed up, and all that. It’s surprisingly elaborate.” 

“It is for adults, and not children, dear,” Chris reminds her. 

“Well it’s still a Halloween festival, so…” 

Chris shrugs. 

“What do you guys wanna do first?” Leon asks. 

“Corn maze,” Claire says seriously. 

“Ok, I’m fine with that.” 

They head to the corn maze, throwing away their food containers before heading inside. Chris stares at Jill the whole time while Claire and Leon argue about which way to go. 

“We should go right,” Claire says, but Leon shakes his head. 

“Did you see the shape of the maze? We need to go left.” 

“Babe, come on. We both know you’re a little directionally challenged. You can’t really blame me for not trusting your ‘instincts’.” 

Leon squawks indignantly, and Claire pulls him to the right. Jill tosses Chris a smile, and they follow. Claire keeps her arm hooked through Leon’s as they walk through the maze. He doesn’t offer any more suggestions, and stays quiet. Much to everyone’s shock, they reach the center of the maze without having to backtrack even once. 

“Ok, how did you do that?” Leon asks, giving Claire a skeptical look. 

Claire shrugs. 

“Whatever, let’s see what’s in the reward box.” 

Claire grabs the reward token, and flips it over. “Aw, it’s a free drink at the bar.” 

Chris snorts, and picks one up. Claire hands it to Leon with a frown. Jill grabs one, and then they head back to the entrance to the maze, Claire pouting the entire way. 

“You know you could just lie, and tell them you’re twenty one,” Jill suggests, and Chris turns so fast he might get whiplash. 

Claire and Leon both snort at the incredulous look on his face. 

“What did you just say?” 

Jill bites her lip. “Nothing.” 

“Can we go to the haunted house now?” Claire asks, trying to change the subject as quickly as possible. 

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. It said it has a whole clown room,” Leon says, and Claire raises an eyebrow. 

“So?” 

“I don’t want to go to a clown room. I don’t like clowns.” 

“You’ll be alright, Kennedy. We’ve faced so much worse than clowns. Come on.” 

“You’re scared of clowns, Leon?” Chris asks as they walk. 

“I’m not scared of them. I just don’t like them.” 

They stop in front of the haunted house, which has the oddest halloween decorations scattered across the lawn. It’s a dark brick building with red strobe lights flashing across it. 

“Claire.” 

Claire leans down, and scoops up one of the decorations. “Here. This will keep you safe.” 

Leon takes it, looking over before laughing. It’s a garden gnome wearing a black cape and fangs like a vampire. 

“Will it?” 

“Yes, you can close your eyes, and hold that with one hand and my hand with the other. You don’t have to look at the clowns.” 

Leon bites down hard on his lip, trying not to laugh at how serious she sounds. 

“His name is now Edward Gnomen.” 

Leon tucks the little gnome under his arm, and nods. “Let’s go.” 

Leon really does close his eyes walking through the clown part, holding Claire’s hand with one, and Edward Gnomen with the other. Chris and Jill try their best not to laugh at them, but end up failing miserably. Though one of the clowns do jump out, and actually grab Chris’ arm as they’re exiting the room, and Chris immediately rams his elbow into the actor’s face. They both stagger away from each other, eyes blown wide, and then the clown falls to the floor. Jill wheezes with laughter while Claire covers her mouth in surprise. Leon just blinks, taking in the situation much later. 

“Wow, I wasn’t even the one to deck them. We should probably get someone to check him out, shouldn’t we?” 

Jill nods, walking over to Chris. “I’m gonna make sure he’s not going to have a panic attack, can you guys handle that?” 

Claire nods, and pulls Leon out of the building. She calls the paramedics while Leon goes to get the person who’s running the ticket booth to tell them what happened. He’s still holding the gnome when he comes back, not even noticing. Claire bursts into laughter. 

“Why can’t we do anything normally?” she asks between giggles. 

Leon sits down, and pulls her down next to him. 

“Have you met any of us?” he asks teasingly. “You gave me a gnome, and your brother just punched out a clown. Though that last part is kinda fair. I would do it too.” 

“You’re scared of clowns. Just admit it.” 

“I will admit that it’s good that I’ve never had to deal with bio weaponized clowns, and that is all. I won’t admit to anything else.” 

Claire leans into Leon’s side. “Well, this is going to be a long night. There isn’t anyone else I’d rather spend it with though, even if we’re dealing with the police and an angry clown with a broken nose.” 

Leon wraps an arm around her, letting her settle her head onto his shoulder. “You too, beautiful.”

A: Anyone can! No sign up or permission is necessary. And you can join at any time, no need to start at the first prompt.

Q: What tag(s) should I be using?

A: Use #cleonchallenge and any other tags you would normally use.

Q: How long can these fics be?

A: Unless otherwise stated in the prompt(s), they can be as long or as short as you want! Keep in mind new prompts come out weekly so please pace yourself and don't feel obligated to write lengthy epics. Seriously, even 100 words or less is perfectly fine!

Q: Is NSFW allowed?

A: Yes! Just make sure everything is properly tagged and everything involves adults.

Q: Is there an ao3 collection that these can be posted to? And is it required?

A: There is a Cleon Writing Challenge collection maintained by ShortAttentionSpanFics that is available to be used but it is not required to add them there if you do not wish to (or you forget lol).

Q: Can I use AI to write these?

A: No. I'll skin you alive if you do.

Q: How do the "Fill-In-The-Blank Title" challenges work?

A: I'll give you something like "Leon and Claire go ____" and you just need to think up a word or words to finish the title. For this example it could be something like "Leon and Claire go to the beach" or "Leon and Claire go home" and then you take that title and create a short fic from that while using the now complete title.

Q: What about the Quotes/Scenarios Challenges?

A: The scenarios ones are probably pretty self explanatory. Just make a fic based on a basic scenario with everything else left up to you. For the Quotes challenge you just need one character in the fic to say the given quote, doesn't have to be Leon or Claire. Again, everything else is left up to you.

Q: Are the bonus challenges required?

A: Nope! Purely optional.

Q: What is that "Round 1" and "Week 1" thing on the prompt?

A: That is mostly for my benefit in keeping things organized. Each "Round" consists of 12 weeks as that is how many unique combinations of Main challenge and Bonus challenge there are before they repeat (ex. Scenarios/Location, Quotes/Object, Scenarios/Word Count and so on). This is all just to make sure I don't start repeating it too early. You can also use this to specify which prompt you're using but it's not at all required.

Q: I like the prompt but I'm not really feeling it for Leon and Claire. Is it ok if I use it for a different pairing/fandom?

A: Sure, I don't mind. Just don't use the Cleon specific tags or add them to the ao3 collection when you post it. Maybe just mention where the prompt came from if anything.

Q: I like a prompt but it was posted months ago. Can I still use it?

A: Yes! These prompts don't have an expiration date. New ones are just added weekly. If anything just specify what prompt is being used in your notes/summary. Or use the "Round/Week" thing mentioned above.

Q: Can I use these prompts for a longer/multi chapter fic?

A: Sure!
