“oh my god and then my mum said to me that-” your friend pauses mid sentence and glances to somewhere behind you, totally confusing you. it’s when you turn around that you finally understand why.

your cheeks fall a darker shade at the sudden appearance of the boy standing behind you in the classroom, an instant reminder of yesterday’s shenanigans after school.

after the boy had oddly refused to let go of your hand on the bus ride, niki didn’t say a single word to you. he had held your hand until you were at the end of your driveway, only letting go once you had opened your mouth to say bye. it was a weird encounter and definitely one you had a lot of questions about.

and they say girls are complicated.

“i need to talk to you,” is all he says before storming outside the classroom and you follow him out. of course with everyone else watching you as you do.

“what’s... wrong? are you okay?” you ask him once you spot the boy right outside the room, his eyes focused on anywhere but at you. he’s evidently nervous, something you don’t get to see much from the usually confident football team captain.

“come with me somewhere after school.”

“w- why? where to? just us?”

“the mall!” his voice raises slightly, not in a threatening way but he seems rather frustrated at something. “just me and you. come. please.”

the sincerity in his voice has you believing that perhaps this was something important, that this meant a lot to him.

before you could you even answer him, another tall boy comes into your view, the boy you had left at the arcade yesterday.

he catches your gaze from down the hallway, a smirk on his face as he gradually comes closer, until he stops right beside you.

“you forgot this, miss class president.”

you look down at haruto's hand to see a photo sheet, the ones you took with him yesterday. noticing your lack of reaction, haruto places the photo sheet into your hand and disappears into the classroom.

you definitely don’t miss the way niki is staring at it, his eyes gawking over the different photos and presumably the one questionable pose. the one where haruto is hugging you.

“you know what, nevermind. don’t worry about the mall.”

the noticeable change in his voice has your heart dropping and you knew. it was now or never. if you didn’t do anything, you’ll probably regret it later.

“hey-” your hand reacts faster than your head, grabbing onto his arm to prevent him from walking away. he seems just surprised as you are and though hesitant, you knew exactly what you wanted to say to him. “i’ll come. i’ll come with you.”

you’re unsure of his intentions but the soft smile that grows on his face was enough to put you at ease, your heart fluttering into a million butterflies.

you’re not sure how to react or what to say for all that matters, your body seemingly frozen. not in a million years would you have imagined that niki nishimura’s crush was your own best friend.

how funny yet cruel.

“hi miss class president,” a familiar deep voice says from behind you before a hand covers over your eyes, blocking out the sight. before you could even question the person, you’re pulled away by the arm, out of the classroom and down the empty hallway.

“it’s always the pretty ones that cry,” he scoffs, pushing you up against the wall, his thumbs softly wiping away your tears, “right?”

instead of being affected by the compliment, you instead let out the ugliest sob, completely crying your eyes out. you could hear him chuckle, his arms softly wrapping around you so you could lean against his chest. drenching it.

“lets ditch.”

even amidst all the crying, you manage to look up at him through blurry eyes, an ‘are you serious’ expression on your face.

“you’re not seriously asking the class president to ditch. you’re out of your mind.”

“i’m not, but you are. so lets ditch.”

all the possible consequences of ditching class ran through your mind but the last thing you wanted was to show up with a face like this. in front of your friend and niki.

“fine. only for a while!”

“whatever.”

the boy puts you in a soft headlock and pulls you towards the exit, luckily not getting caught along the way. you couldn’t believe you were ditching, the perfect-attendance-top-student-class-president was doing the wrong thing.

“it’s your second day and you’re ditching,” you say as you both get comfortable under a large tree on the back oval, away from everyone’s view, “you’re really something watanabe.”

“and you’re the class president.”

your face scrunches up at his words, your hand playfully smacking his shoulder in return.

“touché.”

by now, you were no longer full of tears but rather full of amusement. amused at the fact that you were crying over something that you should’ve been happy about. your friend seemed happy and so did niki.

while in deep thought, you catch haruto staring through the corners of your eyes. the boy has his head tilted your way, his cheeks resting against his palm, focused, like a little curious puppy.

“you really like him, don’t you?”

“wh- what? i don’t like niki.”

“funny of you to instantly assume i meant him,” he scoffs, his signature reaction to everything you say it seems, “so that’s a yes then.”

sigh. caught red handed.

“he likes my friend. they’re happy, i’m happy.”

“right,” he says so with a straight face, his body slightly leaning in towards you, “i don’t think that kid likes your friend.”

“he does-”

“lets bet. if we find out he really does, you win. if he doesn’t, i win,” the boy is now right up your face, a mere breath away. he’s looking down at you, eyes noticeably focused on your lips, “and if i win, you go on a date with me.”
