THE SCREEN: “Mae West Reveals Herself as a Circus Queen in “I’m No Angel” at the Paramount—Saturday's Millions”
I'M NO ANGEL, based on a story by Mae West and supported by Lowell Brentano; music and lyrics by Harvey Brooks, Gladys Du Bois and Ben Ellison; directed by Wesley Ruggles; a Paramount production. At the Times Square and Brooklyn Paramounts.
Tumblr media
Tira .... Mae West Jack Clayton .... Cary Grant Bill Barton .... Edward Arnold Slick .... Ralf Harolde Alicia Hatton .... Gertrude Michael Kirk .... Kent Taylor Thelma .... Dorothy Peterson Benny Pinkowitz .... Russell Hopton Beulah .... Gertrud Michael The Chump .... William Davidson Rajah .... Nigel de Bruller Bob .... Irving Pichel Omnes.... George Bruggeman Harry .... Nat Pendleton Chauffeur .... Morrie Cohen Judge .... Walter Walker
by MORDAUNT HALL.
Arrayed in a variety of costumes which set off her sinuous form, Mae West is appearing at the Paramount in her latest screen vehicle, "I'm No Angel," a title which, as might be surmised, fits the leading character. Here Miss West, who wrote the story herself from “suggestions contributed" by Lowell Brentano, is beheld as a circus beauty named Tira, who wins applause and admiration by risking her blond head in a lion's mouth twice daily.
It is a rapid-fire entertainment, with shameless but thoroughly contagious humor, and one in which Tira is always the mistress of the situation, whether it be in the cage with wild beasts, in her boudoir with admirers or in a court of law.
Tira is ever ready with & flip double entendre and' she permits no skeleton to be found behind her cupboard doors. She has an emphatic personality, which proves a magnet for even social lights with millions. She receives costly presents, Including diamond necklaces, but she is hardly a gold-digger. She refrains from posing, preferring to keep to her natural slangy speech in her journey through the story from a tent to a penthouse.
She admits that she has thrown discretion to the winds, and she sometimes finds herself in an awkward predicament, but through a wily lawyer she succeeds in proving that she is guiltless. The feeble parts of this picture are those in which a criminal known as Slick is introduced. The less one sees of him the better one feels, for the production is interesting only as long as it proceeds on its merry route.
The glimpses of Tira making her impressive entry to the circus arena and then proceeding to the big cage with the roaring lions are depicted shrewdly. Tira does not actually stick her whole head in the lion's mouth, but contents herself by putting her face between the beast's jaws, which is quite enough.
Even this is set forth with a certain degree of fun, and one feels that Tira probably has a pistol ready for an emergency and that other circus employees are ready to shoot in the event that the beast starts to close its mouth. But one is apt to wonder whether they could possibly be quick enough. Society among the spectators is thrilled, all except one snobbish girl, who is furious because her fiancé is very enthusiastic over the performer's courage-and her beauty.
Later there comes the time when Tira puts her fair head into a court of law as the plaintiff in a breach-of-promise case. She sues Jack Clayton, whom she really loves, for $1,000,000, and it is not Tira's artful counsel who wins the case, but the circus queen herself. She cross-examines the defendant's witnesses and turns their testimony in her own favor, the unusual proceeding being countenanced by a judge whose sympathy Tira wins with the utmost ease.
Miss West plays her part with the same brightness and naturalness that attended her second film role. There is no lack of spontaneity in her actions or in the utterance of her lines. She is a remarkable wit, after her fashion. Cary Grant is pleasing as Clayton and Walter Walker is excellent as the considerate old judge. Gregory Ratoff does well as Tara’s lawyer. Wesley Ruggles has directed the film with his usual intelligence.

Blood and Wine (Bob Rafelson, 1996)
Cast: Jack Nicholson, Michael Caine, Stephen Dorff, Judy Davis, Jennifer Lopez, Harold Perrineau, Robyn Peterson, Mike Starr. Screenplay: Nick Villiers, Bob Rafelson, Alison Cross. Cinematography: Newton Thomas Sigel. Production design: Richard Sylbert. Film editing: Steven Cohen. Music: Michal Lorenc.
It takes great acting to steal a movie from Jack Nicholson. In short, it takes Michael Caine. In Blood and Wine, Caine plays Victor, a sleazy ex-con with a hair trigger and a death-bed cough. It's a more physically violent role than we usually see Caine in, and it's startling to see him erupt, slamming into a hapless victim like Henry (Harold Perrineau), who just happens to get caught up in the movie's plot mechanism. Otherwise, Blood and Wine is mostly a forgettable throwback, informed by movies of the 1940s and 1970s, a neo-noir directed by Bob Rafelson, whose directing career was launched with movies starring Nicholson, like Five Easy Pieces (1970) and The King of Marvin Gardens (1972). It's a bleakly cynical movie with no good guys, except that everyone in it looks a little better in comparison with Caine's Victor.

Am I really needed here?
Elias couldn’t understand why he was standing in the Welcome Pavilion alongside the others, but knew better than to voice his thoughts on the matter. Today, Mr. Ryan would be greeting a first-rate (allegedly) politician and his aide, and ensuring their trip to the city of Rapture was as pleasant as could be. For the past week, he’d repeatedly reminded them how important each of their roles were and that they should be on their best behavior when interacting with their guests.
Elias glanced down the line as they silently waited for the Bathysphere to arrive. Each of them specialized in highly skilled areas around Rapture, which was the reason they’d been invited here in the first place. But wasn’t this overkill? What business did a renowned artist like Sander Cohen have with a politician? Or someone like himself? A mortician from the Surface who also moonlighted as a Pathologist when Mr. Ryan needed him to — Elias couldn’t imagine a politician being all too interested in being shown around by someone like him.
“Look lively,” Mr. Ryan mumbled as the Bathysphere containing their esteemed guest rose before finally coming to a halt in the machinery that would hold it in place for the next traveler. Everyone, including Elias, straightened their backs and plastered what they could only hope were welcoming smiles upon their faces. The door swung open and a handsome blond man stepped out followed by a rather tall brunette woman.
“Ah, Mr. Aidan Pyralis and Ms. Janet Peterson, what a joy it is to welcome you here today. I am Andrew Ryan.” Mr. Ryan said as he stepped forward to shake Aidan’s hand while only giving a nod to Janet — she was just an aide, wasn't she? “How did you find the journey here? Rather impressive, was it not? I still find myself marveling at the sights from the Bathysphere despite taking that route many times. Elias couldn’t help but feel sorry for the two. They’d only just arrived and they were about to receive the full Andrew Ryan experience of waxing poetic about his own underwater creation. It was impressive, of course. Definitely something to be proud of. However, many people had contributed to the mammoth project and Mr. Ryan didn’t seem to mention them as often as he should. He probably wouldn’t even introduce them (despite insisting they all be present) until someone cleared their throat and reminded him they were here.
"Come, let us head through to the lounge to get away from this sea salt air."
Tumblr media
Yep, Elias thought with some amusement as he followed the others. Not introducing us quite yet. This was the Andrew Ryan show, after all.

Al Stewart intro post!
With Roads to Moscow being used in Our Flag Means Death, I thought I'd make an intro post for anyone who'd like to learn more about Al Stewart and his music!
Roads to Moscow is far from his only historical song—Al has had an almost life-long interest in history, so that absolutely reflects in his lyrics. Most of the time, he just writes about what he's interested in at the time (usually something to do with history, wine, literature, or movies). Al Stewart has written songs about the French Revolution(s), being stuck underwater in a submarine for 50 years, the prophet Nostradamus, Earth exploding into a million pieces and the remaining exploded life-forms being kept in jars by aliens, a fancy aeroplane maneuver, being reincarnated as a depressed hippo, and more.
Here is a pretty thorough bio that spans from his early childhood to the modern day. It's an interesting read!
Some great AL-bums to start listening with are:
Past, Present and Future
Year of the Cat
Modern Times
Orange
But honestly, I recommend ALL of them!! I don't think he's ever made a bad album.
Here's a link to Al's entire discography:
Here are some of my favorite Al Stewart facts under the cut :)
He likes to go on silly tangents and tell stories during song intros
He does a lot of voice impressions...
...Including a Bryan Ferry parody with a hilariously bad music video featuring Cassandra Peterson (before she became famous as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark!)
He's a wine connoisseur
He memorized the serial numbers on his vinyl records when he was young, and can still recite them
He also memorized and performed Desolation Row by Bob Dylan before it came out in England, and then argued with his flatmate, Paul Simon, about it
He also basically invented last.fm as a kid???
He's a huuuuge fan of They Might Be Giants, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Lord of the Rings
He can turn any conversation into an infodump about history
He met Leonard Cohen in front of an airport bathroom
And, finally, he met John Lennon and accidentally ruined a Beatles concert
Thanks for reading, and I hope y'all enjoy :)
