Happy Pride Month!

Today I thought I'd cover one of my favorite tropes: Found Family! This fic is based on a non-canon event in the Total Drama OC universe, but one that I think would be fun had it happened haha. It stars my OC Maggie and her found family (Cole - @hannahwashington's character, and Lola - @horatios-mom's character) along with a few others! Enjoy! December 19th was a complicated day for Maggie. For most of her life it was just another day. No cake or candles, no balloons or presents. Just going through the motions, just another year older somehow.

When she moved to Vancouver, she wasn’t expecting the day to hold any more significance. Her first birthday living on her own was quickly approaching and all the people in her life seemed to have other things going on so she didn’t think much of it. Just like usual, just another day.

She was scheduled to work at the job that Cole’s dad had secured for her, doing the front desk of a hair salon. So she got ready in her usual work go-to outfit. Professional but casual enough she wasn’t uncomfortable after doing all the menial tasks required by her boss, Sandra.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She looked down at the screen and it was Sandra, asking her to get there a little early. She didn’t have anything else going on so she replied simply: Sure.

Maggie got into her car, turning over the engine. The check engine light came on and she sighed. She’d needed an oil change for a few weeks but was waiting to get her next paycheck before shelling out the money for it. 

I get paid next Friday. I’ll be alright until then… I hope, at least.

She drove the quick 15 minute journey to the salon, parking in the back of the building. The place had been open for a few hours but the customer lot seemed busier than usual as she walked around the corner.

The lights were… off? She looked at the hours pasted on the door and they should be open, there were people here, why were the lights off?

She opened the door, the usual bell ringing as it did with all customers coming in. Sometimes she swore she could hear the bell ringing when she wasn’t even at work.

“Hello?”

Silence.

She flicked on the lights.

“SURPRISE!!!” A load of voices called as people jumped up from their hiding spots, scaring the living shit out of Maggie. She jumped back a few inches in shock.

As she looked around, there were all the people who claimed they were busy for her birthday. Cole, Lola, and even her boyfriend Landon. 

“What is this?”

“A surprise birthday party, Mags,” Cole explained, “You think we’d let it pass by without celebrating?”

“I-” she stood there stunned for a moment, “I’ve never had a birthday party I didn’t figure I’d start now.”

“Well as your best friends,” Lola said, wrapping her arm around Maggie’s shoulder, “We could not let that last any longer.”

Maggie chuckled softly, still completely surprised as she looked around the room. Even if she wasn’t close to some of the other cast members that lived in the greater Vancouver area, all of them had come to this makeshift party. Dannie, Paige, Cassie, and Esther stood there, the former wearing a party hat with a noisemaker sticking out of her mouth.

“Happy birthday Maggie,” Paige smiled.

Landon came up to her with a grin, “Hope this was a good surprise.”

“Y-yeah. I just wasn’t expecting it.”

“We have cake!” Cassie pointed out, “Do you want some?”

Maggie nodded, walking further into the salon to spot a makeshift table set up with a cake that had 16 candles stuck into it.

“That seems like a fire hazard.”

“It’ll be fiiiiiine,” Landon chuckled, “I think.”

Sandra, who had emerged from the back with a lighter in hand, painstakingly lit all the candles before all the group of people began to sing to her.

“Happy biiiiirthday dear Maggieeeee! Happy birthday to you!”

She closed her eyes, making a wish. A wish that she would always remember this day, when she realized that while she’d had a shitty family back in Delaware, she had people who really loved her in Vancouver. Maggie blew out the candles and opened her eyes, a smile creeping onto her smile as everyone cheered.

Who are you?

Hi! I’m Daniel Cole Mauleón (@writepictures), the writer of Kamehamehamlet. In 2015 I co-founded the theatre company Play-Dot Productions with KHH’s director Shalee Mae Cole Mauleón.

What is Kamehamehamlet?

Kamehamehamlet: Good Night Saiyan Prince, was an hour-long one act play, performed during the 2015 Minnesota Fringe Festival. It’s a staged retelling of Vegeta and Freeza’s battle on the planet Namek. Marketed as a Dragon Ball Z and Hamlet mash-up, the parody quickly shuffled off its weighted gi, revealing it was actually a Waiting for Godot spoof. After five performances, Vegeta hung up his helmet of spiky hair. Seven years later, K (@amokslime) wrote this incredibly gracious post on Tumblr, which inspired two people to reach out to me via Reddit to ask if I had a script or a recording of the performance.

I want to pause the semi-marketing voice and say a heartfelt thanks to K. Kamehamehamlet was brought to life by an incredible team of artists during a summer I’ll never forget. We got laughs at jokes, gasps at fight choreography, and we broke even on the budget (a Fringe miracle TBH). K’s post gave me the chance to revisit that show through someone else’s eyes. The mix of pride and humility it stirs up is truly indescribable.

If there is art which has changed you, and especially if the artist is still alive I encourage you to non-intrusively share that with the artist.

Is there a copy of the script?

Yes, I’ll speak more about that at below.

Is there a recording of the performance?

There was, but I genuinely lost the files. And that’s for the best, honestly. It was a last-second attempt, filmed from two cheap cameras (with different qualities and resolutions!), both at bad angles and with truly awful audio. Trust me. It’s better this way.

That said, I do have other archival footage from rehearsal's, tech, etc. that I look forward to sharing for those curious.

What’s next?

This is the question I’ve been asking myself over the past year and the reason it took so long to post anything. Especially since one thing I want to do differently this time is make sure that any artists involved are meaningfully compensated for their time and skill. However, I can’t plan without a better estimate of what kind of support we would have, and I didn’t want to share our intentions without concrete details. Right now, the best way you can support this project is by signing up for the announcement on kamehamehamlet.com and following us on Tumblr and YouTube!

The second best thing you can do is to share with others about this project, if I’ve learned anything reading through the comments on K’s post, it is that there’s a much bigger audience for KHH than I could have ever imagined, and you likely know at least one more person who would be interested.

And while I don’t want to promise anything I can’t deliver on, I will share that I’m planning on making the script available this year and I’ll be writing a separate post about that in near future.

open to f plot: mail order bride for a hard-working farmer (is planned for a modern setting but can be adapted for a historic AU if wanted) character: Cole McKenzie is a fifth generation rancher in Montana, mainly working with cattle and horses. The path of his life was planned out for him long before he was born, and he would have never wanted a different life for himself. He’s always been great with horses, training his first own horse when he was still in elementary school, finding cutting as his favourite sport. By the time he was in high school he started his own breeding program and the only reason why he finished school is that his mother insisted.

When his buddy suggested that if Cole really wanted a family so badly, he should just get into contact with a matchmaking institute, he couldn’t help but feel repelled by the idea. On the one hand, it felt like defeat, like he wasn’t even capable of courting a woman, let alone make her stay, but he had also heard the horror stories. How women were forced into marriage and subsequent sex slavery to their husbands just for a green card, and he never ever wanted to be that kind of asshole. And nevertheless, the thought was lingering in the back of Cole’s mind, only resurfacing when a card from a cousin arrived, announcing the birth of their third baby, and he sat there in his living room, all on his own... finally caving in. He spent the entire night looking for a reputable and trustworthy agency, filling out their paperwork. Becoming a rancher's wife was surely not the ideal that most women were dreaming of, and he was fully prepared that he would only get one match at best, but not even a week later he had a pile of dossiers to look through and Cole chose his wife the way he chose a horse. Gut instinct. Two weeks later, she arrived at his doorstep with a suitcase and a wedding for them on the horizon. To prepare for her arrival, he had been online a lot, reading horror stories of women who spoke of the exploitative way the men treated them, asking for sexual favours for going through with the marriage, and he wanted to make sure that she’d know he wasn’t that kind of man. “I know that we’ll get married in a fortnight, but I need you to know that I am not expecting anything from. Not until you feel comfortable around me”, he started rambling, nervousness written all over his features, trying to keep his hands from fidgeting by shoving them into the pockets of his jeans.
