Inhalt: Will Freeman lebt als Single in London. Weil sein Vater einen erfolgreichen Weihnachtssong geschrieben hat, muss er sich um Geld keine Sorgen machen. Will ist ein Egoist. Er kümmert sich nur um sich selbst und genießt einfach sein Leben. Doch als er bei dem Versuch Frauen aufzureißen die alleinerziehende und depressive Mutter Fiona in einer Selbsthilfegruppe und ihren 12-jährigen Sohn Marcus kennen lernt, verändert sich seine Sicht auf die Dinge. Er freundet sich mit dem Außenseiter Marcus an und hilft ihm dabei "cool" zu werden. Im Gegenzug lernt Will durch die außergewöhnliche Freundschaft auch die Liebe seines Lebens kennen.

Kritik: Ein Nerd-Junge, ein reicher, sexüchtiger Single-Mann und eine depressive Späthippie-Mama sind die Hauptfiguren dieses Films. Der Stoff, aus dem die Träume sind? Ja, irgendwie schon. Der Film schafft es, aus "Außenseitern", Eremiten und den Depressiven glückliche, von anderen akzeptierte und sogar geliebte Menschen zu machen. Mit viel Humor, Ironie und Sensibilität! Tolle Schauspieler*innen.

Oscarstippning 2021

Sent omsider är det dags för årets Oscarsgala. Efter det kanske tuffaste året någonsin för filmbranschen råder det såklart andra förutsättningar än vanligt. Många filmer med planerad premiär under fjolåret har blivit framflyttade, och möjligheten att uppleva de filmer som faktiskt har släppts har varit mycket begränsad. Att uppmärksamma bra filmer känns därför viktigare än någonsin. 

Oscarsgalan är den 93:e i ordningen. Den kommer, precis som föregående två år, inte ha någon enskild värd. På grund av omständigheterna kommer galan att hållas på både Dolby Theatre och Union Station i Los Angeles samtidigt. Exakt på vilket sätt återstår att se, men galans producenter har sagt att »the plan is to stage an intimate, in-person event at Union Station in Los Angeles, with additional show elements live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.«

I vanlig ordning har jag tippat samtliga kategorier – vinnare i fetstil.

David Finchers »Mank« är galans mest nominerade film (tio stycken) men favoritskapet i den största kategorin ligger hos Chloé Zhaos lågmälda neo-Western »Nomadland«, med vinster på Producers Guild Award (PGA), Directors Guild Award (DGA), BAFTA och Golden Globe. 

Det enda som talar emot »Nomadland« är vinsten för »The Trial of the Chicago 7« på Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG). Det är ett pris som historiskt sett har korrelerat starkt med vinnaren för Bästa Film på Oscarsgalan – främst på grund av att skådespelare är den största röstande grenen inom Akademin. Faktum kvarstår dock att »Nomadland« inte ens nominerades för Best Ensembe (som är motsvarande Best Picture på SAG) eftersom filmen inte har någon ensemble, utan drivs av Frances McDormands ensamma huvudkaraktär. 

De som utmanar närmast efter »The Trial of the Chicago 7« är »Minari« och »Promising Young Woman«. De senaste åren har som bekant bjudit på flera skrällar (»Moonlight« och »Parasite«), och därmed är kampen långt ifrån avgjord, men i år känns inte utmanaren lika tydlig. Aaron Sorkin misslyckades med att landa en nominering för bästa regi för »The Trial of the Chicago 7«, och momentum för »Minari« och »Promising Young Woman« känns inte tillräckligt starkt för att lyckas hela vägen. Själv har jag endast haft möjlighet att se fem av de åtta nominerade (ej sett »The Father«, »Minari« eller »Sound of Metal«). De jag har sett har hållit hyfsad jämnhög kvalitet, utan att riktigt nå hela vägen.

Oavsett om »Nomadland« går hela vägen eller ej så tror jag att Chloé Zhao står mer eller mindre ohotad för sin regi. Vid vinst blir hon blott den andra kvinnan i filmhistorien (efter Kathryn Bigelow för »The Hurt Locker«) att lyckas med det.

Om Hopkins skulle ta hem det vore han som 83-åring den äldsta vinnaren i kategorin någonsin. Riz Ahmed skulle vara den första muslimska mannen. Allting talar dock för Chadwick Boseman, som endast 43 år gammal gick bort i cancer i augusti i fjol.

Förmodligen galans mest öppna kategori på förhand, då samtliga fem har vunnit priser under galasäsongen. Vanessa Kirby kan sannolikt räknas bort men övriga fyra har alla reella chanser. Andra Day tror jag dock faller bort på grund av att filmen inte är lika populär (och därmed sedd) som de övriga. Vidare har Frances McDormand redan belönats med två Oscars tidigare, den senaste för bara tre år sedan. Även Viola Davis har varit en återkommande favorit hos Akademin. I »Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom« spelar hon en fysisk och utagerande roll, vilket brukar premieras i sammanhanget. Min röst faller dock på Carey Mulligan. Hon har inte nominerats sedan genombrottet i »An Education« för elva år sedan, men är en personlig favorit med starka roller i bland annat »Drive«, »Inside Llewyn Davis« och »Shame«. Hennes roll i »Promising Young Woman« är en av årets mest debatterade – förmodligen på både gott och ont.

Allt pekar på att Kaluuya kraftfulla gestaltning av Fred Hampton räcker för vinst. Hans största risk är förmodligen att Stanfield är nominerad i samma kategori för samma film, vilket skulle kunna »stjäla« röster från Kaluuya, men det ska mycket till.

Glenn Close har tidigare aldrig vunnit en Oscar, trots sju nomineringar. Så sent som 2019 var hon favorittippad för sin roll i »The Wife« men föll på målsnöret mot Olivia Colman. En slags hedersoscar vore därför inte otänkbart, men givet den relativit anonyma filmen hon är nominerad för tror jag inte det kommer hända. Bisarrt nog är Maria Bakalova en av favoriterna, men efter att SAG och BAFTA gått till Yuh-jjung Youn är det hennes statyett att förlora.

En stenhård duell mellan »Sound of Metal« och »The Trial of the Chicago 7«. Personligen har jag tyvärr inte hunnit se den förra än. Däremot kan jag konstatera att korsklippningen i den senare är helt central för filmens energi. Redan i filmens första minuter utnyttjas detta på ett effektivt sätt.

Knives Out

„Oft erzählen Indizienbeweise klare Geschichten mit gespaltener Zunge.“

Nach seiner enttäuschenden Episode VIII im Start Wars Franchise zündet Regisseur Rian Johnson mit „Knives Out“ das erste cineastische Feuerwerk des noch jungen Kinojahrzehnts. Gestärkt durch einen Cast zum Niederknien entführt er den Zuschauer mit einem verschmitzten Lächeln in ein Twistlabyrinth, dass es eine wahre Freude ist.

Das Geniale hierbei ist, dass er sich hierfür ausgerechnet einen altbackenen Who-Done-It-Plot in Agatha-Christie-Manier herauspickt, der jedoch mit so viel Charme, großartigen Dialogen und Metahumor aufgeladen wird, dass kein Auge trocken bleibt. Allein eine Bemerkung wie: „Sehen Sie sich um, hier sieht es aus, als hätte der Alte auf einem Cluedo-Brett gewohnt“, spricht hierbei Bände. Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Colette und Christopher Plummer tun mit ihrer puren Spielfreude das Übrige, um einen ersten Volltreffer im neuen  Jahr zu gewährleisten. Das fragt man sich, wo man eigentlich sein  altes Cluedo-Spiel gelassen hat.

📽 TobiView: *Dumbo* (2019) Kinostart 28.03.2019 Walt Disney Studios FSK 6 ▪ Beim 2019er Live-Action Remake des Disney-Klassikers aus dem Jahre 1941 führte Tim Burton Regie. Seine Neuinterpretation verschlang ein geschätztes Budget von ca. 170 Mio. Dollar. Beide Adaptionen basieren auf der Geschichte ‘Dumbo, the Flying Elephant‘ von Helen Aberson und Harold Pearl aus dem Jahr 1939. Ich habe den Film erstmalig direkt am Starttag im Kino gesehen. ▪ Inhalt: Zirkusdirektor Max Medici erteilt den Kindern von Kunstreiter Holt Farrier die Aufgabe, sich um das neugeborene Elefantenbaby zu kümmern. Wegen seiner riesigen Ohren erhält das Baby den eher spöttischen Namen Dumbo er gilt aufgrund der Missbildung zunächst als Lachnummer. Doch Milly und Joe Farrier entdecken bald, dass Dumbo dank seiner Ohren fliegen kann. Diese Gabe bringt dem Zirkus neue Aufmerksamkeit und sogar ein Angebot von Neuunternehmer V. A. Vandevere. Dumbo wird daraufhin die Hauptattraktion in dessen Vergnügungspark “Dreamland“. Jedoch läuft dort bei weitem nicht alles so gut wie es scheint. ▪ Der Film ist recht prominent besetzt. Man sieht u. a. Colin Farrell als Holt Farrier, Michael Keaton als V. A. Vandevere, Danny DeVito als Max Medici oder Eva Green als Colette Marchant. Die Kinder Milly und Joe werden von Nico Parker und Finley Hobbins dargestellt. ▪ Dumbo ist ein Film für die ganze Familie, ein typischer Disneyfilm der optisch wirklich herausragend gelungen ist. Die erste Filmhälfte ist das Remake des Zeichentrickklassikers aus dem Jahre 1941, die zweite Filmhälfte hingegen erzählt eine eigene Geschichte mit der ein oder anderen gruseligen Szene. Hier erkennt man ganz klar die Handschrift Tim Burtons. Am 15.6.2018 habe ich gesehen: Maigret und der Fall Picpus (Originaltitel: Picpus, alternativ: Signé Picpus), Spielfilm, Frankreich, 1943. Erstaufführung: 12.02.1943 (Frankreich), Verleih: Tobis, Laufzeit: ca. 95 Min., Bild: s/w, Bildseitenverhältnis: 1,37:1. Produktion: Continental Films. Regie: Richard Pottier. Drehbuch: Jean-Paul Le Chanois nach einer Vorlage von Georges Simenon. Musik: Jacques Météhen. Kamera: Charles Bauer. Darsteller: Albert Préjean, Juliette Faber, Jean Tissier u.a.

Hiermit füge ich meiner kleinen Sammlung von älteren Filmen einen weiteren der deutschen Produktionsfirma Continental Films hinzu, die zwischen 1940 und 1944 im besetzten Frankreich etwa 30 Kinofilme produzierte. Ich besitze bereits Le dernier de six (1941) in einer alten deutschen Kino-Synchronisation von 1942 (siehe [8. April 2016]: Sie waren sechs!) und die Arthaus-Veröffentlichung von Henri-Georges Clouzots Le corbeau (1943) (siehe [24. Oktober 2015]: Der Rabe). Formal handelt es sich bei allen drei Produktionen um Krimis.

Beschreibung

„Der Pariser Kommissar Jules Maigret (Albert Préjean) ist gerade auf Urlaub, als ihn sein Assistent Lucas von einem mysteriösen Mord in der Rue Picpus erzählt. Nach einem Wohnungsumzug fand man die Leiche einer unbekannten Frau in einem Schrank. Sie bleibt nicht das einzige Opfer des Täters, auch ein Nachbar, mutmaßlicher Zeuge des Mordes, wird wenig später tot aufgefunden. Kommissar Amadieus Ermittlungen führen zu nichts, und so beauftragt der Polizeichef seinen besten Mann, Kommissar Maigret, mit den Ermittlungen. Diese führen bald zu interessanten Ergebnissen ... “ [Pidax]

Ort der Handlung: Paris, Maigrets Urlaubsort (nicht genau lokalisiert, er liegt eine kurze Autofahrt von Paris entfernt), Le Cloaguens Heimatort (im Roman Saint-Raphaël an der Côte d'Azur).

Buchvorlage

Simenons Roman Signé Picpus erschien zwischen Dezember 1941 und Januar 1942 in der Zeitung Paris-Soir zuerst als Fortsetzungsroman. Die erste Buchveröffentlichung erfolgte 1944 bei Gallimard. Deutsche Übersetzungen kamen erst Jahre später heraus, zuerst 1961 unter dem Titel: Maigret verschenkt seine Pfeife (Übersetzer: Hansjürgen Wille und Barbara Klau) und erneut 1982 mit dem geänderten Titel: Maigret contra Picpus (Übersetzer: Hainer Kober). Gegenüber der Romanvorlage hat das Drehbuch von Jean-Paul Le Chanois einige Änderungen vorgenommen. So gibt es Abweichungen in der Handlung und Namensänderungen. Die ermordete Wahrsagerin „Mademoiselle Jeanne“ nennt sich im Film „Sheila“, aus dem wahren Namen Marie Picard wird eine Madame Dumont. Das titelgebende Element „Picpus“ wird im Film dem Straßennamen „Rue de Picpus“ entnommen (12. Arrondissemnt von Paris); im Roman geht die Bezeichnung auf eine Herkules-Figur zurück.

Fazit

James Travers hält den Film „painfully tiresome to sit through“ (Films de France). Er mag den plot nicht und findet, daß Albert Préjean in der Hauptrolle überdies eine Fehlbesetzung sei. Der letzteren Einschätzung möchte ich mich nicht anschließen. Préjean verkörpert die Rolle durchaus angemessen, vielleicht etwas agiler als spätere Maigret-Darsteller.

Gelangweilt habe ich mich nicht. Der Spannungsbogen hatte mich erreicht, als der zweite Mord (an der richtigen Wahrsagerin) erfolgte und der seltsame Le Cloaguen auf der Bildfläche erscheint. Ab da begann ich mich zu fragen, was hinter den Morden stecken könnte.

Als schwach empfand ich den Faustkampf am Schluß, der als „Action“-Element nicht wirklich nötig gewesen wäre. Auch die Zeichnung der Figur des Assistenten Lucas als komischer sidekick empfinden einige (mich eingeschlossen) als störend. Hier folgt das Drehbuch offenbar derselben Praxis wie die Sherlock-Holmes-Filme, wo aus Dr. Watson eine etwas dümmliche und lustige Figur gemacht wird. Aber offenbar sah der seinerzeitige Zuschauer das Beieinander von Krimi-Handlung und komischen Elementen als reizvoll an. Continental Films drehte noch zwei weitere Filme, in denen Albert Préjean und André Gabriello die Rollen von Maigret und Lucas übernahmen (1944 kam Cécile est morte! heraus [IMDB], im August 1945 Les caves du Majestic [IMDB]).

Veröffentlichungen

Im Juni 2018 hat Pidax eine DVD des Films herausgebraucht, die neben dem französischen Original erstmals eine deutsche Synchronisation enthält. Als Grundlage dient die bereits bei Gaumont veröffentlichte Fassung unter dem Originaltitel Picpus (sie erschien in der Reihe Gaumont à la demande). Da es bislang keine Eindeutschung gab, auf die Pidax hätte zurückgreifen können, wurde eine neue Synchronfassung erstellt. Ich hoffe, daß sich diese Investition auszahlt; denn das saarländische DVD-Label hat für August 2018 bereits den nächsten Maigret-Film mit Albert Préjean angekündigt (Cécile est morte, 1944), der unter dem deutschen Titel: Maigret und die Frau ohne Kopf erscheinen soll (Pidax). Hierbei handelt es sich ebenfalls um eine Neusynchronisation.

Das Bild der Gaumont- und Pidax-Veröffentlichungen ist nicht ideal. Es ist wenig kontrastreich und grobkörnig, an den Rändern unscharf. Oft empfindet man das Bild als zu dunkel, man wünscht sich, der Helligkeitswert sollte höher liegen.

My Old Radio Show - Coming Alive Again

One late winter afternoon in 1994, I was sitting next to another dad at my daughter Meghan's grade school basketball game.

"Marty, guess what I did this morning? I was a guest on Gary Sullivan's home improvement radio show!"

"Cool. Did you have fun? How would you like to have your own show?"

Marty was the program director for the top oldies station in Cincinnati, Ohio - WGRR - 103.5. He knew many of the other program directors and WMOH in Hamilton, Ohio was looking for a host to do a call-in home improvement show.

A month later, I was on the air. I had no idea how hard it was to do radio, but I persevered and went on to do the two-hour show at three different stations over the next 12 years.

It was a boatload of fun answering live calls, and I even ran the control board for about seven of the years. Working the pots on the board, playing the bumper music and doing live radio was exhilarating.

Guess what? I'm bringing the show back using modern technology.
