In the 1660s, Isaac Newton demonstrated that clear white light was composed of seven visible colors.

Aristotle developed the first known theory of color believing it was sent by God from heaven through celestial rays of light. He suggested that all colors came from white and black (lightness and darkness) and related them to the four elements—water, air, earth, and fire.

These colorful line diagrams reveal the chemical compositions of metals. When a pure metal is burned and viewed through a spectroscope, each element gives off unique spectra, a sort of color fingerprint. This method, called spectral analysis, led to the discovery of new elements, and marked the first steps towards quantum theory.

Violet’s makeup

This post is going to be in-depth, so bare with me for its length. 

Looking through set photos and within the show, Violet seems to wear a few cosmetic products. 

Below is a closeup of Violet in Rubber Man for easier reference I’ve made.  

The makeup artist for season 1 was Eryn Krueger Mekash. I did some digging and it turns out she has spoken about her techniques/products!

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter from February 10, 2011 in relation to lips:

“Lip stains are long-lasting and not drying or sticky — we can’t have hair sticking to lips during the dance numbers,” says Eryn Krueger Mekash, head of makeup on Glee, who uses Tarte Lip Stain in Envy on Dianna Agron and Lea Michele. 

With Makeup411 (a now defunct makeup magazine site), Eryn Krueger Mekash did a Beauty Breakdown on season 1 of Glee, here are the snippets worth noting:

In another interview she brought up the foundation she used on Hollywood for the men to retain the “no makeup, it’s natural” look: 

I love using Tarte BB Treatment cream on men. It gives a touch of color and has a mattifying agent and SPF. […] Polished looks start with foundation that is buffed in and minimal powder. Those cameras can still see every brush stroke so that is still a big priority.

With Allure magazine, she said her personal all-time favorite products were:

"I have always loved Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat for lots of highlighting—undereyes, nasal labial folds. Also a great moisturizer and all around cure-all is Egyptian Magic. It's great for chapped lips, dry skin, rashes. I am ridiculous about my own makeup. I slap it on and blend it later—I have no time to do proper makeup on myself. Healthy looking skin is an important part of the youthful look – and not too much powder, not heavy foundation.

Now back to Violet’s makeup and what I believe she used and did.

I do not believe Eryn Krueger Mekash used much mascara on Taissa. If she did, it looks to be more on the top lashes (just like Michele’s on Glee). What’s visible to me though is the very subtle eyeliner around her eyes. There is no wing apparent. 

Violet’s lips do have a luster as you can see in the image above, but in the below image it’s more matte. I am torn between Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint and Stila Convertible Colors.

All-in-all Violet’s makeup is not heavy or flashy; it gives a natural, youthful impression. Clearly the makeup does vary with each episode but not a lot. Considering she is 15-years-old and juggling so much chaos, it makes sense for her character.

I didn’t get much sleep last night (binge-watching Creepshow the series), but I got a TON done ✅ on a couple of pieces, including this Faerie Queen. I’m halfway through the underpainting before I start mixing/figuring out the colors for this. . One thing I did realize is my grayscale is off. There’s definitely a blue tinge to it that I could never figure out. Studying up on that I see I’m going to have to re do my scale. 😕 Oh, well art is a constant study lesson. One should never feel like there’s nothing else to learn. At least that’s my humble opinion of it. 😁. Some of my favorite oldie but goodie books on the science of color is “Controlled Painting” by Frank Covino and “Mastering the Craft of Painting” by Angelo John Grado. The first mention might not be to everyone’s taste because the pictures are in black and white. However, the instructions and visual references are very straightforward and easy to understand. And for a girl like me that’s very concrete in her learning abilities I loved it.😁 . Not that anyone asked but I have a bunch of books on the subject. Yes—I attended art school but a lot of my training was through reading, studying, and making a lot of bad art 😅. The first portrait I made was of my grandmother and it was so bad. Like horrible.... I definitely wanted to quit and stick to what I was “good” at, but I’m glad I didn’t...My point is that every artist no what stage they are in has a starting point. And that starting point is often fueled with bad art and self-doubt...Everything takes time to learn and even when you feel you understand it art has a way of humbling and bringing you down a peg.😅 . as for contouring, I like the morphe pallet. And tartes shape tape concealer.. i don’t know too much about makeup either, I’m pretty basic when it comes down to application lol I go for a more natural look. Idk if you’re into bb cream and tinted moisturizer but Dr. Jart has a great bb cream and colorscience has a tinted moisturizer, both with spf!! 10/10. wear that with some blush and lip gloss!! beautiful
