State of the Ghaleon Zine:
Gonna just start splopping stuff together into a paginated file today.
Didn't get as much finished as I'd have liked, but at its core it's mainly just something I'd like to have on my table for the sake of having a new zine on my table. Not entirely confident I've got enough time to get it POD'd thru lulu... but I'll give it a shot. Worse comes to worse, I'll see if the local printer can spit out a dozen copies for me to saddle-staple myself at home.
Kinda frustrated with how my usual combination of ambition squelched by fatigue and overwhelm came in to play with this project, but at the very least 1) it's got me back into the habit of chipping away at my wips a little bit every day and 2) had been an invaluable warm-up for putting together the Queer Lunar Zine.
Speaking of which, do we need another year to let that project cook? I'm feeling like the deadlines for that one might be too short for everybody.
Gonna ponder on that later, right now I need to eat breakfast and review margin and bleed settings for the hundredth time...

The Golden Orphism Book, the oldest book in the world.
Tumblr media
El Libro del Orfismo de Oro, el libro más antiguo del mundo.
(English / Español / Italiano)
Perhaps the oldest multi-page book in the world, dating from around 660 BC, it was discovered in the Strouma River in Bulgaria. The book is made of six sheets of twenty-four carat gold, each 5x4.5 cm, held together by rings. The Book of Golden Orphism, created over 2500 years ago, contains illustrations of a horse, a mermaid, a harp, soldiers, and text in the Etruscan language. The book was anonymously donated to the National Museum of History in Sofia, where it is currently housed. The authenticity of the book has been confirmed by two experts in Sofia and London, according to the museum's director. The Etruscans were a people originating from Lydia, in what is now Turkey, settling in central Italy about three thousand years ago. Thracian Orphism combined the cult of the Earth and the cult of the Sun, personified by Orpheus and Zalmoxis.

The Cordial Sisters: Kimberly
For a long time, Kimberly felt jealous of her sister. It always seemed like everything went right for Samantha. Everyone loved her. Samantha was the perfect sister.
Consumed by that bitterness, Kimberly turned to darker paths she barely understood.
One day, the woman who would become her mentor told Kimberly she would no longer teach her. She had found someone else, someone with more determination, more spark in their eyes.
Tumblr media
Kimberly felt rage. Once again, someone had stolen her place.
She turned her focus to her career. Without realizing it, the only person truly holding her back was herself. The moment she let go of the resentment and poured her energy into work, things started to change. She began to rise quickly, earning one promotion after another.
Tumblr media
Eventually, she made peace with her sister. Together, they decided to start a business — something that would combine their strengths and give them a fresh start.
Tumblr media
Kimberly asked Armand to help her find the perfect neighborhood. They visited several lots, explored different hoods. It was during one of those outings, on a calm Sunday morning, while they stood in front of yet another location, that Armand looked at her — and confessed his feelings.

E‑commerce Faceted Navigation SEO: How to Avoid Infinite Crawl Traps
E‑commerce stores thrive on faceted navigation—offering filters like size, color, brand, and price to enhance shopping experiences. But these filters can unintentionally generate thousands of URL combinations, leading to technical SEO nightmares like duplicate content, crawl budget wastage, and diluted link equity.
To scale profitably, brands need to treat faceted navigation as both a user-benefit and a crawl-risk. And for multi-location or rapidly growing stores, partnering with the right experts is essential—something only the Best SEO agencies in Mumbai are equipped to handle effectively.
In this guide, we'll explore how to structure faceted navigation to avoid crawl traps while still reaping the user engagement benefits.
1. The Facet Trap: How Infinite URLs Kill SEO
Creating infinite URLs isn’t futuristic—it’s happening now:
Every combination of color, size, brand, price creates a unique URL.
Google and other bots see each as a distinct page, but the content often isn’t unique.
That results in duplicate content, crawl waste, and index bloat similarweb.com+15goinflow.com+15searchenginejournal.com+15lumar.iolegiit.com.
A Reddit SEO expert illustrates:
“If your URL scheme allows, disallow them in robots.txt to save crawl budget… Googlebot tries to recognize the pattern of useless faceted pages and reduces the crawl ratio.” reddit.com+7reddit.com+7reddit.com+7
Common symptoms:
Thousands of near-duplicate URLs flooding your index
Rapidly depleting crawl allowance without indexing value
Lost authority and reduced rankings across category pages
Partnering with Best SEO agencies in Mumbai ensures these issues are identified and remediated before they spiral.
2. Best Practices to Avoid Crawl Traps
a. Limit Facets That Generate URLs
Only allow crawling/indexing for high-value facets with both search volume and unique content impact. For low-demand or redundant combinations:
Remove <a> links in the UI
Use JavaScript or AJAX to update listings without changing the URL webflow.com+1reddit.com+1reddit.comsimilarweb.com+1webflow.com+1reddit.com+2reddit.com+2reddit.com+2
Example: color filters might need indexing, but size+brand combinations usually don’t
b. Use standard URL structures & parameter conventions
Stick to ?key=value&... formats—not directory-like or session IDs—so search engines parse them correctly reddit.com+6reddit.com+6reddit.com+6reddit.com+11developers.google.com+11seoclarity.net+11.
Keep facet order consistent:
?category=shoes&color=red
Avoid duplicates caused by reordered parameters
c. Self-Canonicalize or Use Canonical to Base Category
Every faceted URL should include a <link rel="canonical" href="base-category-url">. This tells search engines, “This is just a variant of the category page” goinflow.com+7reddit.com+7shopify.com+7prerender.ioreddit.com+11searchenginejournal.com+11ahrefs.com+11.
Pragmatically, the base category retains all ranking signals and rankings.
d. Noindex Low-Value Faceted URLs
When you can’t block crawling entirely, add <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow"> to prevent indexing while preserving link flow similarweb.com+1reddit.com+1thegray.company+1reddit.com+1.
However, don’t block these pages with robots.txt if they carry a canonical tag—Google must crawl them to see the canonical directive.
e. Block Crawling via robots.txt
For low-value parameter combinations, you may add Disallow patterns in robots.txt (e.g., Disallow: *?price=*) developers.google.com+12searchenginejournal.com+12reddit.com+12.
But beware—blocking crawling without noindex means these pages may still appear in SERPs without content ("Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt").
f. Manage Pagination Properly
Use <link rel="prev"/><link rel="next"/> or canonicalize to a “view-all” version to consolidate authority on long category listings ahrefs.com+15searchenginejournal.com+15reddit.com+15developers.google.com+1reddit.com+1.
3. Real‑Life Implementation: Tiered Facet Control
A recommended strategy involves a tiered approach, heavily supported by experts like Best SEO agencies in Mumbai: Facet TypeSEO TreatmentHigh-value (color, price)Crawled, canonicalized, indexedMid-value (size, material)Noindex–follow via <meta>Low-value (session, tracking)Block via robots.txtUser-generated search facetsAJAX only (no href URL)
Redditors confirm this layered tactic:
“Separating brand, category, sale type and other facets is a good start… 1–3 filters allowed makes sense most of the time.” reddit.comdevelopers.google.comseoclarity.net+6reddit.com+6reddit.com+6reddit.com
4. Crawl Budget & Index Bloat Management
Crawl Budget Management
Implement smart disallows + canonical/noindex rules to cut unnecessary bot visits.
Tech-savvy firms like the Best SEO agencies in Mumbai also use log file analysis to fine-tune robots.txt and link structures.
Combatting Index Bloat
Proactively monitor Google Search Console—when you see thousands of URLs marked as “Indexed, though not in sitemap,” action is overdue .
Large retailers often reduce indexed pages by 80% through canonical + noindex + robots approaches, leading to cleaner site health and better performance.
5. When to Allow Some Facet Landing Pages
Some facets are high-traffic, high-converting—like “black leather jackets” or “NIKE running shoes.”
Options:
Create clean, dedicated, indexable SEO landing pages for them
Optimize titles, H1s, unique intros
Noindex rest through canonical or meta robots
SEO check:
“Index only facet values that point to indexable pages… focus on user intent” reddit.com+2reddit.com+2reddit.com+2lumar.io+2reddit.com+2reddit.com+2reddit.com
This selective indexing strategy balances discoverability and crawl control.
6. AJAX-based Faceted Navigation
Make low-value filter buttons trigger AJAX updates rather than unique URLs. Use hashes or data-href attributes instead of <a> tags so URL doesn’t change, preserving crawl budget webflow.com+4searchenginejournal.com+4reddit.com+4reddit.com.
This safeguards user experience without polluting your index with filter variants.
7. Monitoring & Auditing Continuously
This isn’t set-and-forget. Faceted navigation changes over time. Here's how experts maintain control:
Monthly log-audits: Identify spike in bot requests to filter pages
GSC checkups: Ensure unwanted facet URLs are disappearing
Crawl simulations: Use tools like Screaming Frog in AJAX mode
Link audits: Remove internal links to noindexed URLs
Sitemap hygiene: Only include canonical category URLs, not all variants
The Best SEO agencies in Mumbai include this in strategic ongoing SEO plans for large e-commerce clients.
8. Business and UX Benefits
Getting faceted navigation right isn’t just SEO—it boosts conversions:
Reduced 404s, cleaner UX
Better site speed and crawl efficiency
Increased rankings for core categories
Easier indexation of valuable keyword pages
Lowered risk of content duplication penalties
By bringing user intent and SEO discipline together, brands can unlock both search visibility and sales performance.
Final Thoughts: Facets Done Right
Faceted navigation—done poorly—creates more problems than it solves. Done smart, it enhances UX and SEO. But implementing this at scale for growing e‑commerce brands requires:
Technical precision
Continuous oversight
Business-aligned content strategy
That’s why serious retailers collaborate with the Best SEO agencies in Mumbai. They have the expertise, tools, and frameworks to:
Segment facets by value
Implement canonical/noindex/robots rules
Execute AJAX-first filter UX
Monitor, audit, refine over time
If you’re scaling an e‑commerce store and want to avoid crawling yourself into an SEO hole, now is the time to partner with an expert.

🌟 Webflow Tip of the Day – Supercharge Your CMS Pages by Optimizing Collection List Performance
When working with Webflow’s CMS Collection Lists, loading too many items on a single page can cause sluggish performance, hurt SEO rankings, and degrade the user experience — especially on mobile.
Here’s how you can dramatically improve speed, interactivity, and SEO using best practices:
🧠 1. Limit Items Per List
Instead of loading all blog posts, products, or portfolio items at once, show only 612 items per list.
How to Do It:
Select your Collection List Wrapper
In the Settings Panel → check the “Limit Items” option
Set a reasonable number like 6, 9, or 12
This cuts the load time drastically, especially on mobile.
🔄 2. Enable Pagination
Webflow allows pagination for CMS lists — perfect for blogs, job boards, or directories.
How to Do It:
Go to Collection List Settings
Check “Paginate items” and set items per page (e.g., 6 per page)
Style navigation arrows or numbered pages as needed
Why it works: It keeps DOM size smaller and helps Google crawl pages more efficiently (improves SEO).
🖼️ 3. Lazy Load Your Images
Images can be heavy. Webflow supports native lazy loading.
How to Do It:
Select each image in the Collection List
In the Image Settings → Set “Load” to Lazy
This ensures images load only when they come into view, not all at once.
🔍 4. Combine Filters with Limits
Example: Show only “Featured Projects” or “Top 3 Articles” from a category.
Steps:
Apply a filter (e.g., Category = Featured)
Add item limit (e.g., 3)
This creates focused content blocks without overloading the layout.
⚙️ 5. Use Load More with Webflow Logic or Custom Code
If you want a modern infinite scroll or “Load More” button instead of pagination, consider:
Custom JS with CMS API
Using Finsweet’s Attributes (no code solution): https://www.finsweet.com/attributes/cms-load
This creates a smoother UX for blog readers or product browsers.
🚀 Result
✅ Faster load times ✅ Improved SEO & crawlability ✅ Better user experience on all devices ✅ Easier page management ✅ Scalable CMS design

Master Solr Query Syntax: Advanced Techniques & Best Practices
Solr Query Syntax: Mastering Search the Smart Way
In today’s data-driven digital world, delivering relevant and accurate search results is non-negotiable. Whether you're running an eCommerce platform, an enterprise-level application, or a content-rich site, Apache Solr is a powerhouse that enables fast and scalable search functionality. But to truly harness its potential, mastering Solr query syntax is key.
What is Apache Solr and Why Is It Important?
Apache Solr is an open-source, enterprise-grade search platform built on Apache Lucene. Known for its blazing speed and flexibility, Solr is used by industry giants to manage and retrieve massive volumes of data. Its ability to index, search, and rank documents efficiently makes it a core component in modern search architecture.
To make the most of Solr’s capabilities, understanding how to construct and optimize queries is essential. A well-written Solr query improves relevance, performance, and ultimately, user satisfaction.
Core Components of a Solr Query
At the heart of Solr is its query syntax, which allows you to structure search requests with precision. Here's a breakdown of its key components:
Query String (q): The core search input.
Fields: Specify which document fields to target.
Filter Queries (fq): Apply constraints without affecting scoring.
Sorting (sort): Order results by relevance, date, etc.
Boosting (^): Elevate the importance of certain fields or terms.
Understanding how these components interact will empower you to craft smarter, faster queries.
Phrase Queries & Boolean Operators: Precision in Search
Solr allows advanced search refinements using phrase queries and Boolean logic.
Phrase Queries: Enclose in quotes to find exact matches.
Example: "digital marketing tools"
Boolean Operators:
AND: All terms must be present.
OR: Any of the terms may be present.
NOT: Exclude specific terms.
These tools are perfect for narrowing or broadening your results with surgical precision.
Tumblr media
Wildcard Searches & Fuzzy Matching: Handle Uncertainty
When users are unsure of spellings or partial terms, wildcards and fuzzy matching come to the rescue:
* (wildcard): Matches multiple characters.
?: Matches a single character.
~ (fuzzy): Allows for minor misspellings.
Example: color~ can match colour, collar, etc.
These features improve user experience by increasing the likelihood of relevant matches.
Boosting and Fielded Queries: Prioritize What Matters
Want Solr to give more weight to certain documents? Use boosting:
plaintext
CopyEdit
title:Solr^2 description:search
Here, Solr prioritizes the title field over the description. Combine this with fielded searches for laser-targeted results:
plaintext
CopyEdit
category:electronics AND brand:Apple
This ensures users get what they're looking for—faster.
📄 Pagination & Sorting: Control the Flow
Displaying too many results at once can overwhelm users. Implementing pagination (start, rows) lets users navigate results easily, while sorting ensures the most relevant results appear first:
plaintext
CopyEdit
sort=price desc&start=0&rows=10
This keeps your UI responsive and your users happy.
✅ Best Practices for Writing Efficient Solr Queries
Define Clear Goals: Know what the user wants before writing queries.
Test & Iterate: Use real-world data to refine results.
Monitor Performance: Optimize based on response times and relevance.
Collaborate with Developers: Leverage backend expertise for complex queries.
Stay Updated: Solr evolves—keep your syntax up to date.
Conclusion
Mastering Solr query syntax is not just a technical skill—it's a strategic advantage. From improving search speed to delivering more relevant results, efficient querying powers better digital experiences. Whether you’re building complex applications or managing growing data sets, a strong foundation in Solr syntax is essential.

OK, a few notes, aimed at curious non-coders who'd like an idea of what can or can't be done with this:
It's a PHP library. It's used on the backend, as part of the software that runs on Tumblr or Twitter or Craigslist or Neopets or whoever's servers and spits out the raw webpage content that your browser ends up displaying.
This means it has very little to do with frontend UI tweaks or browser extensions like XKit, whose extra functionality is pretty much bolted onto the page after the fact via JavaScript that runs in your browser. Not only was this written to serve some pretty different purposes, PHP is for server-side use; this isn't code you can slap onto someone else's site by running a doohicky on your own computer. It also isn't a full-fledged app like Wordpress for site admins to run on a server as its own standalone thing.
So what is it? Basically, a bunch of prewritten, adaptable code that backend devs can use to make life muuuuch easier when they're coding the parts of their apps that handle content feeds. Retrieving chunks of them, combining them, filtering them, reordering them, caching them, all before the end results are served up to visitors. The code Tumblr's released so far is almost 100% agnostic about what that content might be, where it might come from, or what format the data's in. Like, out of the box, a couple of the fancier sorting tools are just aware enough of "blogs" and "posts" to throttle stuff that might hog an algorithmic feed? But that's about it for now. The bones of all this are pretty flexible, and most of it would be just as suited for wrangling, say, a YouTube recommendation stream.
IMO the niftiest (and, ok, most messy-ass bitch, but in a fun way) parts I've seen are its solutions to... call 'em general plumbing headaches. Like "if we're filtering a feed, e.g. yeeting posts from blocked users out of searches, how should we handle auto-grabbing a few extra items to potentially fill out each page of results? Can we fine-tune how aggressively to do it, if some filters will be weeding a lot more posts than others?" Or "wait, so the dashboard is paginated by post ID, likes are paginated by date liked, and search results are paginated by... witchcraft? Is there some unified way to just treat it all as 'wherever we left off' in each of these feeds we're mixing and matching? Can we make the damn computer figure out when & how to fetch more from each?" Or, idk, big sets of posts that get algorithmically sorted, and how to keep the post order from jumping around as they're loaded or reloaded. Yeah, boring details. But making all those parts (AND caching!!!) play nice together is the absolute devil. That's stuff you want already solved when you sit down to slice and dice some sexy custom dashboards.
Interestingly, I'm not sure whether or not this library is involved in aggregating your followed blogs' posts into the raw stream that powers the dash. Whatever's handling that may be more like a data source that these tools are pulling from; they seem more focused on manipulating streams once you've got 'em, and inserting bits of one into another, like the way recommendation carousels occupy a slot on your dash that might otherwise have been a post. IDK how they'd perform trying to combine the latest from hundreds of blogs at once.
So third-party devs who can't wait to unleash the full power of Outlook email filters on the Tumblr Experience™ may still be stuck with the "/users/dashboard" endpoint of this hellsite's API... whose terms of service include a blanket prohibition on reordering dashboard items. Or inserting/removing posts from any content stream. In fact, if I'm reading this ToS right, they just open-sourced a library that we are pretty much forbidden from using on any of the data streams provided by their API. So... guess it's a good thing these tools are designed for all kinds of uses.
StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.
Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.
First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit.
What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time you hit your Following feed, or For You, or search results, a blog’s posts, a list of tagged posts, or even check out blog recommendations, you’re using this framework under the hood. If you want to dive into the code, check it out here on GitHub!
StreamBuilder has a lot going on. The primary architecture centers around “streams” of content: whether posts from a blog, a list of blogs you’re following, posts using a specific tag, or posts relating to a search. These are separate kinds of streams, which can be mixed together, filtered based on certain criteria, ranked for relevancy or engagement likelihood, and more.
On your Tumblr dashboard today you can see how there are posts from blogs you follow, mixed with posts from tags you follow, mixed with blog recommendations. Each of those is a separate stream, with its own logic, but sharing this same framework. We inject those recommendations at certain intervals, filter posts based on who you’re blocking, and rank the posts for relevancy if you have “Best stuff first” enabled. Those are all examples of the functionality StreamBuilder affords for us.
So, what’s included in the box?
The full framework library of code that we use today, on Tumblr, to power almost every feed of content you see on the platform.
A YAML syntax for composing streams of content, and how to filter, inject, and rank them.
Abstractions for programmatically composing, filtering, ranking, injecting, and debugging streams.
Abstractions for composing streams together—such as with carousels, for streams-within-streams.
An abstraction for cursor-based pagination for complex stream templates.
Unit tests covering the public interface for the library and most of the underlying code.
What’s still to come
Documentation. We have a lot to migrate from our own internal tools and put in here!
More example stream templates and example implementations of different common streams.
If you have questions, please check out the code and file an issue there.
