Admiral on deck!—or when your phone tells you that you are looking at a “white admiral” or a “red-spotted admiral” and you do a double-take! 🦋 (Especially when you thought at a glance it was a pipevine swallowtail, except, yeah, no swallowtail. [Our swallowtails often get to be quite ragged, with the characteristic swallowtail ends missing, but this shape and pattern are clearly different on closer examination…once it stopped flying away!])

It seems that Limenitis arthemis is divided into two subspecies based on the presence or absence of a white stripe. Those with the white stripe are commonly called “white admirals” (Limenitis arthemis arthemis) and don’t come this far south, and those without the stripe—such as these—are the “red-spotted purple,” Limenitis arthemis astyanax. A new butterfly for me, either way 😀

I believe these are two different individuals, the first one (on an azalea) showing a larger area of blue color than the second (on forsythia, pictures 2 and 3). I spotted the less-colored individual again today in the back yard.

Later, heading across the back yard to the vegetable garden, I startled a butterfly that was resting in the grass. Experience has taught me that the only butterfly around here that lazes around in the grass is the Common Buckeye, which I see once or twice a year. It finally decided to land in some black-eyed Susans and let me both confirm its identity and snap a photo—and this is the second one I’ve seen this year.

Finally, one of the purple passionflowers is growing in the back of the vegetable garden—and blooming. Such a fun flower.

I got up late this morning and initially forgot to say good morning. Well, I'm making up for that now. In person, saying good morning in the morning, often comes out in a mumble as I stumble through the house, that's if anybody is up, besides me and the dogs. That is usually not the case, even if we have guests staying.

Why do we say good morning? It is because we are acknowledging the person that we are saying it to. Plus, it is something that we can say even if we don't like the other persons shoes. It is respectful to acknowledge the people around you. Though It's not normal to say good morning to every person in Walmart on a crowded day.
