Different Types of Disability Care
If you or someone you know has a disability, there are many ways to get the care they need. This article will explore the different types of disability care available and what to look for when choosing a provider.
Complete all application forms accurately and thoroughly. Errors and incomplete information can lead to the denial of disability benefits.
Personal Budgets
A personal budget is an amount of money allocated to you by your local council as part of the care and support planning process. This is based on the costs of your agreed outcomes stated in your care and support plan.
You may choose to have a managed account held by the local authority or a direct payment into a bank account that you manage yourself. This can be a mixed package where some of the money goes to a care agency and some of it is a direct payment for care services you buy yourself.
Disability rights organizations encourage innovative approaches to communitybased disability services that promote choice, independence and self-sufficiency. These include consumer-run alternatives, peer and self-help programs and independent living centers.
Direct Payments
Direct payments give people with disabilities control over their own care and support. They can be used for things like paying for a personal assistant (PA) to help with day-to-day tasks or activities to reduce loneliness and isolation. They can also be used to pay for breaks for family carers.
Direct payment users are expected to manage their money well by keeping records, including timesheets and receipts. They also have to account for their spending to their local authority.
If their needs change, they can ask for a direct payment review. This may happen if their condition improves temporarily or they go into hospital. Their local trust will need to be satisfied that their needs are still being met. The local authority will check that this is the case by reviewing the evidence they receive.
Respite
Caregiver respite provides a temporary break from the caregiving responsibilities of families caring for a child or adult with a disability home care. It can be for a few hours, a day or even overnight. It can be provided through formal respite services or through informal care from family and friends.
This form of care can be paid for through a personal budget or direct payments.
Some charities provide subsidised respite holidays for families of disabled children. Research found that caregiver satisfaction was increased after a week of respite care. One study followed caregivers who received respite and a week after, administering the Diener Satisfaction with Life Scale. This showed that the type and intensity of activities participated in were similar pre- and post respite. The caregivers also reported feeling less stressed.
Assistive Technology
Assistive technology (AT) consists of devices and services that help people with disabilities perform everyday tasks. These tools may be store bought, modified or even custom made; they can range from a simple communication board to a prosthetic hand. They can also be covered by insurance or accessed through programs that provide them at little or no cost.
AT is defined broadly and includes a wide range of products, including software and hardware tools that help with computer use. These tools fall into general categories and are then broken down into subdivisions, with each category addressing specific impairments or activities. These include: visual (screen readers, voice recognition software, reading assistants), hearing, cognitive and mobility (wheelchairs, walker, canes, braces). For school-age students, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that schools consider the use of AT in each student's IEP.
In-Home Care
Whether physical or mental, disabilities can make daily life difficult and cause longlasting impairments that may affect a person’s quality of life. For people with disabilities, specialized care can provide much-needed support and help them live independently.
In the past decade, there has been a shift away from institutionalization and toward home and community-based services. This is partially due to patient advocacy and laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Olmstead v. L.C., and partly because it can be more cost-effective for the government. However, the shift has not been universal. For example, the number of older adults with disabilities receiving formal care increased, while those who received both informal and formal care stayed relatively stable. (110). This trend is likely due to changes in demographics and spending mix.

Last week was so surreal. On Thursday, in a packed lecture hall, l sat on a panel alongside community leaders as an expert in youth development/advocacy at the Intergenerational Trauma and Community Violence Summit. The keynote speaker was THE Dr. Joy Degruy, a world renown scholar, researcher, and lecturer (and THE person I’ve looked up to for the past 3 years!). People drove from across the state to be apart of this day, y’all. At the end of answering the question, “If we have youth at our hearts, what is one thing we can do to aid in healing?”, she gave me, little old ME, a standing ovation. Afterwards, she shook my hand and said to me, “Don’t give up. I look forward to you continuing your work.” Umm WHAT?! When I left, I sat in my car and cried, lol. Sometimes I get so discouraged because I don’t have a degree, and it falters my steps while I walk in my purpose, ya know? But people see me, they see my drive, and know my efforts aren’t in vain. I need to remind myself of that more. #invest #support #protect#localorganizations #communitybased #JoyDegruy #PostTraumaticSlaveSyndrome #trauma #intergenerationaltrauma #summit (at Wayne County Community College District) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoE6owpgl8u/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=uwlbm2t30l6o

How Could $400 Billion New Federal Dollars Change Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services?

As a Jersey City resident, this is a perfect for the community to build the public to come together. Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Jersey City Council passed a resolution at last night’s council meeting authorizing a subsidy agreement between the City the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, representing an important next step in the acquisition of the Pathside Building in Journal Square. The Pathside Building will be transformed into the home of a new Jersey City Museum and community center, as the Fulop Administration continues to bring new life to Journal Square through an emphasis on local arts and culture.
I believe a vibrant community recreation center can have a stabilizing effect on the lives of young people. By providing safe and adequately equipped spaces for physical activities like dance, martial arts, yoga, basketball, and other sports, community centers instill discipline, healthy exercise habits, and teamwork. This can help promote social bonds by uniting families, encouraging cultural sensitivity, and supporting seniors and individuals with disabilities.
