LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
June 4, 2025
Heather Cox Richardson
Jun 04, 2025
Just hours after President Donald J. Trump posted on social media yesterday that “[b]ecause of Tariffs, our Economy is BOOMING!” a new report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said the opposite. Founded in 1961, the OECD is a forum in which 38 market-based democracies cooperate to promote sustainable economic growth.
The OECD’s economic outlook reports that economic growth around the globe is slowing because of Trump’s trade war. It projects global growth slowing from 3.3% in 2024 to 2.9% in 2025 and 2026. That economic slowdown is concentrated primarily in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and China.
The OECD predicts that growth in the United States will decline from 2.8% in 2024 to 1.6% in 2025 and 1.5% in 2026.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released two analyses today of Trump’s policies that add more detail to that report. The CBO’s estimate for the effect of Trump’s current tariffs—which are unlikely to stay as they are—is that they will raise inflation and slow economic growth as consumers bear their costs. The CBO says it is hard to anticipate how the tariffs will change purchasing behavior, but it estimates that the tariffs will reduce the deficit by $2.8 trillion over ten years.
Also today, the CBO’s analysis of the Republicans’ “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is that it will add $2.4 trillion to the deficit over the next decade because the $1.2 trillion in spending cuts in the measure do not fully offset the $3.7 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Republicans have met this CBO score with attacks on the CBO, but its estimate is in keeping with those of a wide range of economists and think tanks.
Taken together, these studies illustrate how Trump’s economic policies are designed to transfer wealth from consumers to the wealthy and corporations. From 1981 to 2021, American policies moved $50 trillion from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%. After Biden stopped that upward transfer, the Trump administration is restarting it again, on steroids.
Just how these policies are affecting Americans is no longer clear, though. Matt Grossman of the Wall Street Journal reported today that economists no longer trust the accuracy of the government’s inflation data. Officials from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which compiles a huge monthly survey of employment and costs, told economists that staffing shortages and a hiring freeze have forced them to cut back on their research and use less precise methods for figuring out price changes. Grossman reports that the bureau has also cut back on the number of places where it collects data and that the administration has gotten rid of committees of external experts that worked to improve government statistics.
There is more than money at stake in the administration’s policies. The administration's gutting of the government seeks to decimate the modern government that regulates business, provides a basic social safety net, promotes infrastructure, and protects civil rights and to replace it with a government that permits a few wealthy men to rule.
The CBO score for the Republicans’ omnibus bill projects that if it is enacted, 16 million people will lose access to healthcare insurance over the next decade in what is essentially an assault on the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The bill also dramatically cuts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Plan (SNAP) benefits, clean energy credits, aid for student borrowers, benefits for federal workers, and consumer protection services, while requiring the sale of public natural resources.
These cuts continue those the administration has made since Trump took office, many of which fell under the hand of the “Department of Government Efficiency.” But, while billionaire Elon Musk was the figurehead for that group, it appears his main interest was in collecting data. His understudy, Office of Management and Budget director Russell Vought, appears to have determined the direction of the cuts, which did not save money so much as decimate the parts of the government that the authors of Project 2025 wanted to destroy.
Vought was a key author of Project 2025, whose aim is to disrupt and destroy the United States government in order to center a Christian, heteronormative, male-dominated family as the primary element of society. To do so, the plan calls for destroying the administrative state, withdrawing the United States from global affairs, and ending environmental and business regulations.
Yesterday the White House asked Congress to cancel $9.4 billion in already-appropriated spending that the Department of Government Efficiency identified as wasteful, a procedure known as “rescission.” Trump aides say the money funds programs that promote what they consider inappropriate ideologies, including public media networks PBS and NPR; the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which provides food and basic medical care globally; and PEPFAR, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief that was established under President George W. Bush to combat HIV/AIDS in more than 50 countries and is currently credited with saving about 26 million lives.
Vought appeared today before the House Appropriations Committee, where members scolded him for neglecting to provide a budget for the year, which they need to do their jobs. But Vought had plenty to say about the things he is doing. According to ProPublica’s Andy Kroll, he claimed that under Biden “every agency became a tool of the Left.” He said the White House will continue to ask for rescissions, but also noted that, as Project 2025 laid out, he does not believe that the 1974 Impoundment Control Act, which requires the executive branch to spend the money that Congress has appropriated, is constitutional, despite court decisions saying it is.
Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) told Vought: “Be honest, this is never about government efficiency. In fact, an efficient government, a government that capably serves the American people and proves good government is achievable is what you fear the most. You want a government so broken, so dysfunctional, so starved of resources, so full of incompetent political lackeys and bereft of experts and professionals that its departments and agencies cannot feasibly achieve the goals and the missions to which they are lawfully directed. Your goal is privatization, for the biggest companies to have unchecked power, for an economy that does not work for the middle class, for working and vulnerable families. You want the American people to have no one to turn to, but to the billionaires and the corporations this administration has put in charge. Waste, fraud, and abuse are not the targets of this administration. They are your primary objectives.”
The use of the government to impose evangelical beliefs on the country, even at the expense of lives, also appears to be an administration goal. Yesterday, the administration announced it is ending the Biden administration’s 2022 guidance to hospital emergency rooms that accept Medicare—which is virtually all of them—requiring that under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act they must perform an abortion in an emergency if the procedure is necessary to prevent a patient’s organ failure or severe hemorrhaging. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act requires emergency rooms to stabilize patients.
The Trump administration will no longer enforce that policy. Last year, an investigation by the Associated Press found that even when the Biden administration policy was being enforced, dozens of pregnant women, some of whom needed emergency abortions, were turned away from emergency rooms with advice to “let nature take its course.”
Finally tonight, in what seems likely to be an attempt to distract attention from the omnibus bill and all the controversy surrounding it, Trump banned Harvard from hosting foreign students. He also banned nationals from a dozen countries—Afghanistan, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen—from entering the United States, an echo of the travel ban of his first term that threw the country into chaos.
Trump justified his travel ban by citing the attack Sunday in Boulder, Colorado, on peaceful demonstrators marching to support Israeli hostages in Gaza. An Egyptian national who had overstayed a tourist visa hurled Molotov cocktails at the marchers, injuring 15 people.
Egypt is not on the list of countries whose nationals Trump has banned from the United States.

Sixth Pillar (Pathfinder Second Edition Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by RemnantXao on DeviantArt)
Named as the newest and most experimental branch of the Five Pillars Academy, the most prestigious magical school in the Tian city-state of Goka.
Essentially, what sets this “Sixth Pillar” apart is their focus on blending magic, particularly innate magic such as that which sorcerers are born in possession of, with martial arts, seeking perfection and harmony between body, mind, and soul through their personal magic.
While initially invented with sorcerers in mind, casters of all stripes can learn a thing or two from these teachings, giving them an opportunity to hold their own in close combat in a way we rarely see with most casters.
This archetype originally appeared in book two of the Fist of the Ruby Phoenix AP, which makes sense given the party is expected to fight in a martial arts tourney hosted in the city, but it also got reprinted with a little expansion and rewriting in the compiled hardback version of the AP, though some feats got rewritten or strangely share a name. I’ll be including any non-repeats for posterity, of course.
In any case, this archetype might appeal to you if you want to be able to throw a punch in addition to casting your spells.
The base dedication of this archetype improves the mage’s aim with unarmed strikes or magic to improve to match the other, if one is higher than the other, in addition to bolstering their athletic ability.
Mobility is key for may of these casters, and so they learn to move while casting in the same action.
Many also learn the sixth pillar stance, which focuses on serene focus and fluid dodging to allow them to better cast spells while in melee combat without reprisal, as well as funneling a little bit of excess magic into their limbs to empower a follow-up strike.
Further mastery allows them to improve the conduction of follow-up spells after they strike, as well as enhancing their accuracy when they strike after casting, benefitting them no matter what order they choose when casting and striking.
While many spells attack at range, sometimes a point-blank strike is what is needed. As such, many of these students learn how to channel such spells into direct touches, forgoing any additional targets to gain surprising accuracy and channeling the excess magic into a shockwave that bowls the foe over.
Whether you’re playing a monk with a casting archetype, or a caster with a decent unarmed if not the monk multiclass archetype, this archetype offers a way for a spellcaster to hit hard in melee when they need to, with some additional benefits. It’s not quite as dedicated to martial/magical blending as the magus archetype, but there’s no need for added equipment to make it work. (Mental note, work on homebrewing for unarmed 2E Magi soon). No matter what you’re specific build is though, this archetype should probably be taken with the assumption that the character is not going to be afraid to get up close and personal when needed.
While there’s no denying that these adepts make great strides in mastering both their bodies and their magics, I imagine that there are a few purists out there who assume that splitting their focus limits their overall ability. Does your character care what such detractors think? Do they want to prove themselves to them or themselves?
In the nation of Vikoss, a new regime is rising that decries that all magic not controlled by the state, especially the inborn magic of sorcerers, is an aberration to be destroyed. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the population is falling for their propaganda, forcing magic users outside of the regime to either leave, or learn hand to hand skills to supplement their magic.
No elf has set foot in the Vale of Silver Leaves in a century, no living ones, at least. However, there is one who still watches over that sacred place: an automaton of elegant make with the soul of it’s final guardian, waiting for someone to come and learn their arts both magical and martial from them, to begin a new age for the elven people.
Though he is small and weak, Ion of the Truestar, or just Ion, is brave ring archon eager to see justice done. He has been sent to the material plane to guide a young sorcerer of celestial blood. What he hasn’t been told is that the child is also a tiefling nephilim being raised in a monastery, the orderliness of which chafes them.

Some Sounds Some Burdens Can Release
Thoughts on cover songs, the loss of meaning, and whether you can lose the point if you never even knew what it was…
While I have played some form of musical instrument for most of my life, I can only very loosely be considered a musician. The most formal training I’ve had was during 5-9th grade when I played trumpet in school band. I’ve played guitar since I was about 10, with a sizable 15-year gap of not playing anything. Like most people that look like me who play guitar, I was largely self-taught: first with Hal Leonard chord books, then guitar tablature that I first sought from guitar magazines that they’d sell at the local Walmart before transitioning to a purely online collection of tabs of dubious quality and accuracy. It was an odd, brackish time - the transition between hard publication and online curation.
I had a couple of opportunities to play with bands. But my innate insecurities and the terminal inertia that beset the self-taught “experts” left me questioning what the point of playing music with no end goal even is. I still have those questions, but I now play with far more frequency than I ever have in my life. I’m even writing some music that mostly lands as naive jams landing somewhere in the pocket of The Replacements and Wilco.
And yet, I still question the point of it all. The only thing I don’t question is how easily and deeply music can make you feel.
My Intentions are Good and Earnest and True
I am someone who was diagnosed as a ASD Level 1 well into adulthood. This diagnosis did not shock me as much as I thought it would. I always had social difficulties. Fitting in was a problem. I was an easy target for ridicule. I was overly sensitive and didn’t know how to relate to my peers. When responsibility wasn’t tied to any sort of task, I had issues with organizational skills and planning. When I did have to be responsible, I relied on my secret ADHD superpowers to help me get stuff done.
Still, the one struggle that I’ve never been able to shake is to be seen/heard/understood. That said, I just mask this shit well.
Naturally, in a need to be better understood, I turned to music - listening, not playing. My parents had a big record collection that mostly stayed with my dad after their divorce. For the first couple of years after the split, I would often be left home alone while my dad worked overnight shifts. As such, I’d hang out with my dog and deep dive into the records. I made mix tapes and mix CDs for friends. Unlike the stereotypical mix makers, I never did so with any romantic undertones. I just wanted to share good music that I felt expressed facets of personality to which I would often align. I most often would make cassettes for people. I’d pull from my CD collection and pepper in selections from the crates and crates of vinyl in my house. Each tape would have 30 minutes a side. Compiling a track list to fit on Side A and Side B with as little dead space at the end became a fun puzzle that would take up an entire evening.
In all that time, I never thought to try to train my ear with my guitar. I never thought of this as a means to improve my own fledgling skill set. I never thought about how this was how musicians who taught themselves got better. Moreover, I never realized that people could find inspiration in a song and cover it in their own way. When I did learn other people’s songs on guitar, I understood that it was helping me to add to my skill set. I never thought of it as a way to use someone else’s songs to take any relationship I had to the sentiments contained therein as a means to express myself.
Cover Me Up, or: I Heard There Was a Secret Chord David Played and It Pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do ya…
There are great cover songs out there. I think I may prefer Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help from My Friends” to the original by the Beatles. The best covers songs take the original and change it in a way that uncovers new, possibly even deeper meaning. Compare and contrast “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails and the subsequent cover of the song by Johnny Cash. The original is cold, sterile, bleak. It sounds like someone in a deep depression or lost to dependency. There is an almost adolescent anger to it. Johnny Cash approaches the song as a reticent look back, because there is no point in looking forward. Guitar and piano, plaintive in their interplay and my God, that voice. It is very much sung from the perspective of someone recognizing that their grip on life is loosening. It is a song about mortality. It is a song about the last dying embers before our ashes return to ashes and our dust returns to dust.
This says nothing about the fact that Bob Dylan wrote “All Along the Watchtower” and, upon hearing the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s cover, declared that the song was now Jimi’s. It was no longer his.
Some songs work their way into the zeitgeist that were perhaps too cleverly and subtly written and are thus clumsily interpreted as something that they are not. This is particularly the case with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Cohen had written up to 180 different verses of the song and referred to it as a joyous affirmation of life using religious allusions and references to capture vignettes of emotionality and enthusiasm.
It also was undeniably horny, with the shapes and sentiments of BDSM hiding in the shadows. And yet…
It has been co-opted as an almost funeral dirge. Kate McKinnon, as Hillary Clinton, famously performed it as the SNL opener the Saturday after Trump was elected in 2016. One of Biden’s first official acts as President was to preside over a televised memorial to the Americans lost during the Covid pandemic. “Hallelujah” was the song of choice.
None of these versions had a hint of the irony that Cohen peppered throughout the song, much less horniness.
Sometimes, the songs are so personal to the original writer that even famous people covering them becomes problematic. This is reflected in the recent blow up about Morgan Wallen arranging a version of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up.” Isbell’s song is a love song first and foremost about his (now ex) wife, Amanda Shires. However, the story of the song is Isbell’s detox and recovery from deep substance abuse and alcoholism. When he sings in the chorus “It’s cold in this house and I ain’t going out to chop wood / So cover me up and know you’re enough to use me for good,” he is at his most his most vulnerable, literally having the shakes. The only person he trusts to see him in this state and to see him through this is his wife. There’s nothing inherently sexy about it.
And yet, people like Wallen cover this song as a love song with an almost horny delivery of the chorus. Girl, leave your boots by the bed; hang your dress up to dry. We ain’t leaving this room. To his credit, Isbell doesn’t pass judgement on covers of this incredibly personal-to-him song, saying that he’s grateful for the life it has given his song and that “"It was my real life s*** and now I’m once again reminded that I was not alone in that particular storm."
God, It’s Brutal Out Here
Still, there is an inherent problem with performing a song that is so singularly personal for the composer and their story. It’s especially problematic when such songs are used to woo an audience and perhaps get into someone’s pants. Is there a solution to this? I don’t know. Maybe not.
But maybe we should use the parts of these songs that inspire us, that touch us, that move us to tears (and yes, even horniness) to figure out our own songs to sing. Maybe we do what Elvis Costello suggests when, in defense of Olivia Rodrigo, he said, “It's how rock & roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That's what I did."
I would like to give credit to the songs from which I pilfered lyrics for this post’s title and headings: “Sleep On the Left Side” by Cornershop, “Satan Is My Motor” by Cake, “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, and “Brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo. I’m just as guilty as anyone in using covers to attract attention. But maybe in using them as a framework to guide my writing, I’m making a brand new toy. Thanks for reading.

Smrtolf “Aemilia(s)”
This is a drabble that could be done with great historical accuracy and proper research. I have done exactly none of that in this case. All the nobles are OCs.
I’m tired and it is late here so proofreading was less than usual.
For @adridoesstuff as all my smrtolf drabbles are. Cut for length.
Franz has never been good at talking to his son. At first he had simply chalked it up to Rudolf’s age - talking with children was very different from talking with adults, but if anything things got harder and not easier as Rudolf grew.
It’s at one of the informal dinners that Franz finally pries something out of Rudolf. It’s not really anything, just a name. Aemilia. A friend of his son’s. Or at least that is what Rudolf calls her. No title, no family name to accompany it. Just Aemilia.
And as much as Rudolf had a tendency to dance around these sorts of things, Franz had no delusions about the nature of Rudolf’s friendship with this Aemilia. Perhaps it would do some good for the boy to have a mistress that he did seem to care about.
He does try to put it out of his mind. Rudolf and this Aemilia are being remarkably discrete - Eduard seems entirely in the dark, and Franz honestly hadn’t thought that was possible.
But Franz for his part can’t help but to survey the long table of nobles at one of the more formal dinners. Aemilia, Amalia, however it was being spelled these days, wasn’t quite as popular a name as it used to be.
That was probably for the best. Whoever Aemilia was, there would be no major diplomatic incident aside from with Belgium, and given how discrete Rudolf was being it wasn’t like they could really complain much. Men had needs.
There are only two women named Aemilia - Maria Aemilia that is - at the table that night, and both are dowagers, so Franz discards them immediately. There are a dozen women by that name at his court among the more minor nobles. And it would be easier to conduct an affair with a countess than with a princess.
But perhaps there is a little more than that to it. One of the Dowagers is old enough to be Franz’s mother, but the other is younger even than Rudolf. The poor woman had been the fifth wife of an ancient lord. None of the four who had come before her had ever so much as swollen with child, but the fifth wife - Amalia - had borne the lord a son. He’d been the late lord by the time the boy was born, though.
And while the succession had been a relatively smooth transition - Amalia had been great with child when the father passed. There was no doubting the paternity, but the lord had never updated his will, and his equally ancient brother had taken the child almost immediately and declared himself regent.
Amalia had come to Vienna to petition for the return of her son among other things, and if nothing the woman was determined. Perhaps she had gone to the Crown Prince to try and speed things along. It wasn’t as if no one was sympathetic to her plight, but the legalities were murky. Such things did not move quickly.
But Rudolf hadn’t ever said anything at the young dowager’s petition, only nodding along as all the others did and departing for Mayerling, leaving Franz to the business of government.
The other women who came to mind were countesses for the most part, and a few baronesses. But he’d know if it were one of them. Minor noble houses had tendencies to become hangers-on if their daughters found places in the bed of one so high as a Crown Prince. Franz does make a mental note to have Eduard compile a list to see if there are any who might not have the usual hangers-on.
Given how discrete Rudolf seems to have been, perhaps he has found a lady with no relations. There are, of course, other possibilities. Less savory possibilities. It’s expected for one such as Rudolf (or Franz himself for that matter) to dally with a countess, or perhaps a baroness. Actresses, on the other hand, would be entirely unacceptable. But surely Eduard would know if Rudolf had a lady friend in the city.
Perhaps then it is that Rudolf keeps an orphan countess at Mayerling, away from prying eyes. But such a woman would be a sought-after bride. A baroness, then. Or even an actress. How Rudolf managed to get any of them to Mayerling without alerting Eduard, Franz had no idea. Then again, Eduard was a very busy man. But this was not the sort of thing that would slip through the crack. Especially as it was another thing that Eduard could complain to Franz himself about. That the Crown Prince was bedding women instead of learning to rule and empire.
And, Franz thought, it would do him some good to be out of the palace, even if it was only for a day or so.
He departed with only a few guards, well before dawn. Eduard could deal with matters for a day.
—------------------
The birds are there, watching ever so carefully as Franz dismounts his horse. Rudolf had always tried to be subtle, but the walls of the palace were white. It wasn’t as if the boy could have hidden a flock of crows if he tried. He had tried, but never with much success. But they had all left once Rudolf took up residence at Mayerling, so Franz had never brought it up with his son. The problem was out of sight. Foreign ambassadors wouldn’t be writing any superstitious missives to their home nations about the Viennese court being haunted by carrion crows.
He comes swiftly through the lodge, the servants parting. There aren’t many here, and they were ever so loyal to Franz’s son to a level that vexed Franz himself on occasions. Eduard seemed almost to the point where he would tear his own hair out. To Franz, though, it spoke well of his son, of his ability to inspire loyalty when he needed to.
It’s early, and part of Franz expects to catch Rudolf still asleep, in bed with his mistress, but the scene that greets him is nothing of the sort.
His son is painting, a raven perched at his side and a crow on the floor some distance away, playing with what appears to be one of Rudolf’s shirts.
“Rudolf.” The boy starts, entirely surprised to see Franz. It’s not like Franz comes here often, usually leaving Rudolf to his privacy.
“Papa.” He does recover his composure quickly, passing off the brush to the raven, who holds it in its beak ever carefully while regarding Franz. The crow on the floor hadn’t even looked up. There’s an unspoken tinge to Rudolf’s voice, though. What are you doing here?
“Rudolf, we need to talk.” The confusion on Rudolf’s face is obvious. Franz sighs and sits down. “About your friend. Aemilia.”
His son goes completely still at that. So this will be a most awkward conversation, then.
“Rudolf, having urges is normal. And you’ve been discrete, but-” Franz pauses. Awkward didn’t do whatever this was justice. It was torture. “Rudolf, if you’re trying to father a son out of wedlock to try and get your divorce you should know it doesn’t work that way.”
The look Rudolf gives him is one of utter shock, mixed with confusion. So that was not his son’s goal, then. The idea had come to Franz on the ride.
“She’s not my-” Rudolf doesn’t even get the word out, still looking at the floor. The crow - an odd black and white thing - was still playing with the shirt, seemingly enthralled as it tried without success to unpick the seams.
“Rudolf-”
“Aemilia Isn't my mistress.” Rudolf blurts the words out, looking up at Franz only only seeming to just notice that he had spoken out of turn. Franz for one didn't care much - it wasn’t as if there was anyone around to see.
And so Franz waited, giving his son an expectant expression. He wants to know.
Rudolf instead turns, taking the brush from the raven, setting it down, and offering it his wrist.
“Papa, this is Aemilia.” Rudolf nods to the bird, placing a little kiss on her head. “My friend.”
The bird chirps in agreement.
A familiar bird, Franz realizes. “Is that the bird that bit me two months ago?”
Rudolf had been hiding after dinner, and Franz had joined him, watching his son toss grapes and bits to meat to a graceful raven. But when his son had run out of morsels the raven had turned to Franz himself, nosing around at his fingers, and ever so slightly nipping at one.
“Yes.” Rudolf sounds resigned. The bird, on the other hand, makes an affirmative noise and eyes Franz once more. Perhaps, Franz thinks, Eduard might not be able to handle the empire for a day. Things have been tense.
“Aemilia stays at Mayerling, Rudolf.” And, Franz thinks, others can retrieve his son.
Rudolf looked up, confused, but Franz was already taking his leave. He took a step back, only to hear a squawk. The little black and white raven was looking at Franz, seemingly very confused.
The exit is more than a little clumsy, but it’s for the best. And Eduard can call off the search for the mysterious Aemilia.
Or at least, that is what Franz tells himself during the ride back.

Finding a Dentist Who Meets Your Family’s Needs
Every family has unique dental care needs, so finding a dentist in Cookeville TN who offers comprehensive and personalized services is essential. An insight into the role of a medical coder and biller
To join the field of healthcare, one does not have to be a doctor or nurse. They can always do a Diploma in Clinical Research, or pursue a course in medical coding and billing. Medical coders and billers play a vital role in the healthcare system. They are important in making sure that patient visits are recorded with care, making sure that insurance companies pay the medical office on the behalf of the patient.
Going for a Medical Coding and billing Course Online would be a good idea for people who like to work in an independent manner, and are motivated to get things done without being micromanaged. Medical coding and billing can be a great way to start a career in healthcare and earn a decent living.
A medical coder transcribes the details of a patient's visit to ensure comprehension by insurance companies and healthcare organizations. Medical coding involves converting information such as a physician's diagnosis, patient symptoms, or a doctor's prescription into numerical or alphanumerical codes. These codes specifically depict each injury, diagnosis, prescription, and medical procedure. This process holds significance for maintaining the patient's medical records, facilitating the functioning of the doctor's office or hospital, and aiding the insurance claims processor.
A medical biller, on the other hand, takes the coded transcript of the patient visit and enters this information into specialized software. The compiled data is then submitted to the patient's insurance company as a claim. Following the insurance company's payment, any remaining amount is invoiced to the patient, incorporating considerations for co-pays and deductibles. Similar to coding, accuracy and attention to detail are crucial in medical billing. Collaboration between medical billers and coders ensures precise recording of patient visits and the accurate transmission of this information to insurance providers for correct reimbursement to the medical office.
Details of Professional Certificate in Medical Coding and Billing can be found online.

Expert Tips for Choosing the Best Surgeon for Your Retina Eye Surgery
Tumblr media
Introduction
Retina eye surgery is a significant medical procedure that demands a high level of skill and experience. The well-being of your vision hinges on the competence of the surgeon you choose. With numerous options available, how can you be sure you're making the right decision? This guide aims to provide clarity on the process of selecting the best surgeon for your retina eye surgery, ensuring that you're in expert hands throughout your journey.
Choosing the Best Surgeon for Your Retina Eye Surgery
When it comes to something as precious as your eyesight, there's no room for compromise. Here's how to go about choosing the best surgeon for your retina eye surgery:
1. Research Thoroughly and Widely
Before making any decisions, conduct thorough research. Utilize online resources, medical directories, and patient reviews to compile a list of potential surgeons. This will help you gain a better understanding of their background, expertise, and patient satisfaction.
2. Evaluate Experience
Experience matters significantly in retina eye surgery. Look for surgeons who specialize in retinal procedures and have a substantial track record. An experienced surgeon is more likely to handle unexpected complications and deliver successful outcomes.
3. Assess Expertise
Retina eye surgery is a complex field. Look for surgeons who are board-certified and have specialized training in retinal diseases and surgeries. This expertise ensures that they are up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.
4. Check Credentials
Verify the surgeon's credentials and affiliations with reputable medical institutions. Board certifications, memberships in professional associations, and recognition from peers are indicators of a surgeon's commitment to excellence.
5. Request Referrals
Don't hesitate to ask your ophthalmologist or primary care physician for recommendations. They can provide insights based on their medical network and refer you to trusted retinal surgeons.
6. Consultation is Key
Schedule consultations with multiple surgeons on your list. Use this opportunity to discuss your condition, ask questions, and assess the surgeon's approach. A skilled surgeon will take the time to explain the procedure and address your concerns.
7. Patient Testimonials
Reading patient testimonials and success stories can give you valuable insights into the surgeon's patient care, communication, and results. Look for consistent positive feedback and outcomes.
8. Transparency about Risks
A trustworthy surgeon will provide transparent information about potential risks and complications associated with retina eye surgery. Their honesty reflects their commitment to your well-being.
9. Surgical Facility Standards
Inquire about the surgical facility where the procedure will take place. It should be accredited, well-equipped, and maintain high standards of hygiene and safety.
10. Collaborative Approach
A great surgeon values your input and involves you in the decision-making process. They will discuss treatment options, explain the pros and cons, and tailor the approach to your individual needs.
11. Latest Technologies
Stay updated on the latest advancements in retina eye surgery. Inquire whether the surgeon utilizes cutting-edge technologies that enhance the accuracy and success rate of the procedure.
12. Clear Communication
Effective communication is vital. A skilled surgeon will explain complex medical jargon in understandable terms, ensuring you're well-informed every step of the way.
13. Second Opinion
Don't hesitate to seek a second opinion if you're unsure about your initial consultation. A reliable surgeon will support your decision to explore multiple options.
14. Cost Considerations
While cost is a factor, prioritize quality over price. Look for value in terms of experience, expertise, and successful outcomes, rather than choosing solely based on cost.
15. Patient-Centered Care
Choose a surgeon who prioritizes patient-centered care. Your comfort, concerns, and questions should be their top priority.
Conclusion
Choosing the best surgeon for your retina eye surgery is a decision that can significantly impact your vision and overall quality of life. By following these expert tips and guidelines, you'll be well-equipped to make an informed choice that ensures your eyes are in the hands of a skilled and compassionate professional.

[since it's been a while, this was about a series of articles where Bret Devereaux roasts GRRM for claiming the Dothraki are "an amalgam of a number of [real life] steppe and plains cultures", which they're not]
No but seriously. Let's say you intend to write a fantasy novel set in an expansive world containing a bunch of cultures, and you want one of these (not your main focus!) to be inspired by Eurasian Steppe and American Great Plains cultures. BE HONEST. Would you read that entire bibliography before starting writing? It's 15 books. Would you read a fraction of it? Would you even know how to compile it, and how to stick to reliable sources that aren't disputed in the field or obsolete?
And perhaps more to the point, should you HAVE to?
No! That's an insane thing to ask from fantasy authors! [I think I expressed myself very poorly before, and accidentally implied it's obligatory. It's really not.] Going full circle back to the OP, there's only one thing you have to do.
Do not, under any circumstances, claim "historical accuracy".
At most, say you're "inspired by", IF you've actually done some quality research for your own enjoyment, taking care to note you're not actually a historian with expertise in the field.
Better yet, say you're "loosely inspired by", IF you've read at least a monograph about the culture in question (nothing too detailed, just enough to protect you from gross misconceptions).
And simply say you're "inspired by the popular conception of", if all your preconceptions (the reason you wanted to be inspired by it in the first place!) are from fiction and/or pop history, history bloggers, and r/AskHistorians (yeah, sorry, they're useful but for this they don't cut it).
There, problem solved.
it is very easy to avoid getting dragged over and over again by history bloggers for the quality of your fantasy novels: don’t repeatedly emphasize how ~aCcuRaTe~ they are! Accuracy means nothing in fantasy, it’s a totally useless term, and people will forgive almost any believability-stretching worldbreaking sin if you write well and tell an engaging story–unless you try to stake your reputation as a fantasy writer on gritty realism and being a more historically attentive worldbuilder than that Tolkien guy, who only *checks notes* had a PhD in medieval literature and spent his entire life thinking, writing, and teaching about medieval language and culture.

These are some answers to the question, is “ardwar” a word, and if so, how. It is a place, on the eastern shore of Loch Ardvar (see entry at the Gazetteer of Scotland) — satellite view map view of same — and Hardwar (among several spellings), in the north of India (Uttarakhand State).
The highlands Ardwar — might it have something to do with “Hardware” its appearance as a surname?
