Part 14 of the Missing piece series
First official week
Tobias didn’t say much as the car rolled to a stop outside the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training complex, but you could feel him watching you from the corner of his sunglasses. You’d known him long enough to read the subtleties: shoulders relaxed = safe. Chin tilted = focus. Backpack over one shoulder = he thought you’d do fine.
You blew out a breath and stepped out.
First official week as a Barça player.
First test to prove you weren’t just hype.
—
You’d always known you were fit. Growing up on a farm didn’t leave a lot of time for skipping leg day. Especially when your “leg day” was dragging hay bales or carrying sacks of grain up and down the barn stairs. But this was the first time it was measured like this.
On paper.
With data.
And you crushed it.
Speed sprints? Personal best.
Explosiveness? Top 3 in the team.
Vertical leap? You exceeded their expectations.
At one point during mobility testing, you stripped down to just your compression shorts and sports bra to move freely for the cameras and sensors. There was a moment. Brief, but noticeable, when the room fell a little quieter.
You were used to your body. To what it could do. You weren’t showing off, but you were definitely being seen.
Someone whistled low.
Mapi, obviously.
“Dios mío,” she muttered from behind a laptop screen. “Is this part of the test, or is this just a gift?”
You rolled your eyes and kept stretching.
Ingrid didn’t say anything, but you caught the shift in her expression. The slight furrow between her brows when you reached for a wall stretch and the curve of your back revealed the thin, scattered white scars that spidered across your shoulder blades.
Later, she walked by and bumped her knuckles against your arm.
“Your body’s incredible,” she said softly. “But those… they’re from before?”
You nodded once.
She didn’t ask more. Just nodded back and gave your arm a squeeze.
—
After showers and recovery shakes, you were ushered into the media studio for your “Get to Know Me” segment. The official video that would go up across Barça Femini socials to introduce you to the fans.
You sat in full kit fresh, crisp, name on your back. And you tried not to fidget while the lights were being adjusted.
The interviewer smiled. “Alright. Let’s make the Culers fall in love with you.”
You blinked. “No pressure, then.”
“Name, age, position?”
“Y/N. Twenty-two. Attacking player, mostly left wing.”
“Perfect. Question one: Favorite food?”
“Lasagne,” you said immediately. “The cheesy kind. With garlic bread.”
Off camera, Mapi called out, “She’s not lying! I’ve seen it!”
“I was carb-loading!” you yelled back.
Ingrid added calmly, “There was no game that day.”
“Question two,” the interviewer continued. “Pre-match ritual?”
You smiled. “I always lace my left boot first. Always.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s enough.”
“Question three: Players you looked up to?”
“Neymar. Messi. And Ada Hegerberg. Watching her made things click for me.”
“Question four: Fun fact fans wouldn’t guess?”
You shrugged. “I’m low-key addicted to Pepsi Max.”
“That’s… specific.”
You grinned. “I’m Norwegian. It’s basically a national phenomenon.”
Mapi shouted, “She drinks it at breakfast!”
“She offered it to the physio!” Ingrid added.
“Question five: Three words to describe yourself?”
“Strong. Fast. Hungry.”
Mapi again, louder: “FOR LASAGNA!!”
You groaned and dropped your face into your hands.
The interviewer laughed. “Last one. What does playing for Barça mean to you?”
You took a breath.
“Everything,” you said softly. “When I was thirteen, I trained at La Masia. It didn’t last long, and it wasn’t easy, but it stuck with me. The joy of how football is played here. The philosophy. I’ve wanted to come back ever since.”
There was a pause, just a little beat of silence.
Ingrid leaned around the curtain. “You’re doing it now.”
Mapi followed with, “And looking good while doing it.”
—
That night, after the video was filmed and your numbers logged, you lay stretched across the couch in their apartment. Mapi’s hand tracing lazy circles on your thigh, Ingrid’s fingers softly combing through your hair.
“Long day,” Mapi murmured.
“Big day,” Ingrid added.
You smiled, letting their voices settle over you like a blanket.
Tomorrow, the pressure would come. The matchday prep nerves. The press. The expectations.
Next day, pre match prep
You weren’t even playing yet, and still the pressure felt like a second skin.
Not from the coaches, they were good. Clear. Fair.
But the cameras?
The articles?
The whispers that built up online every time you posted, or didn’t post, or breathed?
You didn’t know how to deal with it.
—
“Just breathe,” the physio said, pressing her thumbs into the tightest part of your shoulder.
You were lying facedown on the massage table, head resting in the cradle, jaw clenched.
“I am,” you muttered.
“Try again.”
You tried again.
It didn’t help that you’d already watched two reels this morning of people debating your value, whether you deserved to be at Barça. Whether you were hype or real. Whether your “personality” was more important than your touch.
You hadn’t even played a full 90 yet.
“You’re holding your breath again,” the physio said gently.
You let it go.
The door opened. Footsteps. Then a voice.
“You mind if I sit?”
Alexia.
You didn’t lift your head — you couldn’t — but you nodded.
There was a pause. Then: “It gets loud, huh?”
You swallowed. “Yeah.”
“Feels like every breath you take, someone has an opinion on it.”
Another nod.
“But you know what drowns it out?” she asked. “Your teammates. Your joy. And a ball at your feet.”
You exhaled slowly.
“I’ve seen you,” she said. “You’re the type who lights up when you dribble. That’s not fake.”
“Feels like everyone’s waiting for me to fall on my face.”
“Let them wait,” Alexia said, smiling. “They’ll be waiting a long time.”
—
Training ended with a short recovery cool-down and the dreaded ice baths.
You stripped and stepped in next to Ingrid without thinking.
“Lean on me, babe,” she said softly.
You leaned. Of course you did.
The chill soaked into your skin. Your breath slowed. Your body finally let go of the tension.
You didn’t even notice you’d drifted off until the quiet giggles started.
“She’s out,” someone whispered.
“She always is,” Salma added. “Any time she’s near Ingrid.”
“I am not,” you mumbled, barely awake.
Ingrid brushed her thumb across your arm. “You are, baby. That’s how I like it.”
You grunted and refused to open your eyes.
—
At the small press event later, you were sharp at first.
Polished.
Then one of the reporters asked about social media and if your visibility came from your actual game or just your look.
Your mouth opened. “I think it’s— I mean— I know I can play, and if— if that’s not clear then—”
“She means yes,” Mapi cut in cheerfully. “And she also thinks your question sucks.”
The room laughed.
You blinked. “Yeah. What she said.”
—
Dinner was lasagna again. Your chef had clearly caught on to your carb dependency.
You were working through your second plate when Ingrid called softly, “Baby, slow down a bit”
You paused mid-chew. “Mm.”
Mapi grinned from across the table. “Every single time.”
“What?”
“She says ‘baby’ and your fork drops like it’s choreographed.”
You frowned. “I’m just being polite.”
“She’s got you trained.”
“She’s nice,” you muttered.
—
Later, shirtless and tucked into the corner of the couch, you stretched out across Mapi’s lap while Ingrid’s hand rested on your ribs.
“You good?” she asked softly.
You nodded, eyes half-closed. “Better now.”
“Still nervous?” Mapi asked.
You didn’t answer at first.
Then: “A little.”
Ingrid leaned down, kissed your cheek. “You don’t have to prove anything.”
“Tomorrow’s your start,” Mapi added. “But don’t think of it like a test. Think of it like your moment.”
You smiled tiredly. “You two make everything feel easier.”
Ingrid brushed your hair from your face. “You make everything feel right.”
You sighed, letting your whole weight sink into the couch.
And by the time Mapi pulled a blanket over your hips, you were already asleep.
Next day
You had fire in your chest before the whistle even blew.
Not nerves. Not excitement.
Focus.
They could talk all they wanted — about hype, about image, but today, you were going to remind everyone exactly why you were here.
—
From the first minute, they made it clear: you were the target.
You couldn’t touch the ball without a body on you. Hands on your hips, studs down your ankles, elbows in your side.
By the tenth minute, you’d already snapped once, spinning on a defender and barking, “¡¿Quieres jugar fútbol o pelear?!”
(“Do you want to play football or fight?!”)
The ref gave you a warning look. You gave him a glare in return.
—
The first goal was clean. Classic.
A ball flicked through by Alexia. You ghosted past one, touched once to set it, and fired high into the top corner.
1–0.
You celebrated by kissing the badge on your chest, simple but clear. This is where you wanted to be.
—
Second half.
The ball broke to you near the sideline, and as you sprinted up, their right back took you out, shoulder first, dragging your leg.
You slammed into the ground, rolled, and instantly bounced back up, blood in your mouth, rage in your chest.
“¡Eso es una broma, árbitro!”
(“That’s a joke, ref!”)
You marched up to him, finger pointed, voice raised.
Alexia was beside you in a flash, one arm around your chest. “Tranquila,” she muttered under her breath.
You pushed her off. “¡Me están pateando en cada jugada!”
(“They’re kicking me every play!”)
The ref ignored you. Again.
Fine.
—
You got your revenge three minutes later.
Same defender. Same side.
This time, she slid in again, hard. You stumbled and fell, but your feet caught the pitch like magnets. And then you bounced with the momentum back up. You were gone.
Sprint. Cut inside. Rippling net.
2–0.
You walked back past the defender, still sitting on the ground.
“Deberías haberte quedado de pie.”
(“You should’ve stayed on your feet.”)
—
Your third came in the 85th minute.
Caroline sent a chipped cross from the opposite flank. You beat two defenders in the air, heading it in like gravity didn’t apply to you.
Hat trick.
You dropped to your knees. Arms open. Jaw tight.
The stadium exploded.
—
Then came the MVP announcement.
You barely had time to untie your boots before they dragged you to the flash interview zone.
You stood under the lights, still catching your breath.
First question came quick, in Spanish.
“Tres goles en tu primer partido completo. ¿Cómo te sientes?”
(“Three goals in your first full match. How do you feel?”)
“Cansada,” you answered bluntly. “Pero satisfecha. No vine aquí a posar. Vine a jugar.”
(“Tired. But satisfied. I didn’t come here to pose. I came to play.”)
Another laugh. Another question.
“Fue un partido muy físico. ¿Qué opinas del arbitraje?”
(“It was a very physical match. Thoughts on the refereeing?”)
You stared dead into the camera.
“La próxima vez, tal vez alguien debería proteger a las jugadoras talentosas en lugar de mirar hacia otro lado.”
(“Next time, maybe someone should protect the talented players instead of looking the other way.”)
Silence for a beat. Then the press officer quickly thanked the media and ended the session.
—
As you walked off the platform, your jaw was still tight. But your chest?
Lighter.
You’d said what needed to be said.
And more importantly?
You’d shown them.
Three goals.
One warning.
Zero regrets.

Pedro Acosta (KTM) - Rehab Day
Requested: yes
Prompt: this ask
Warnings: none
The faint sound of an engine revving echoed in the background of the living room as Pedro Acosta stepped through the front door of his shared apartment with his girlfriend, Y/n. His boots clicked on the hardwood floor as he tossed his bag onto the hallway bench. It had been a long weekend of racing, but a quick message from Y/n had him smiling all the way back to their place. He wasn’t sure who had had the tougher weekend—him on the MotoGP circuit or her, sprinting through an F1 triple header. He took a deep breath, feeling the calmness of being back home wash over him.
Pedro made his way toward the living room, hearing the TV playing softly from inside. The sight he walked into made him pause and let out a laugh. There, slouched on the couch, was Y/n in what could only be described as her recovery attire. She had a hot water bottle carefully placed around her neck, eye patches under her eyes to combat the fatigue, and her hair clipped up. She was wearing the baggiest sweatshirt she could find and around her legs? Her 'compression trousers' as she called them, even though everyone else in the world called them compression boots. "Are you okay?" Pedro asked, grinning from ear to ear.
Y/n groaned loudly, her head sinking deeper into the cushions as she raised a hand in a weak wave of acknowledgment. "I’m never going to be okay again." She mumbled dramatically. "My neck has never been more sore in my entire life, Pedro. Triple headers should be illegal." Pedro chuckled, stepping into the room and leaning against the doorframe. "It wasn’t that bad, was it?"
"Oh, you have no idea." She said with a dramatic wince as she adjusted the water bottle around her neck. "You should try sitting in a cockpit for three days straight, barely getting a chance to stretch, with a neck that feels like it’s about to snap in half." Pedro smiled sympathetically. He knew she always gave 110% on the track, but he had no idea how tough it must be on her body. "Alright, I’ll take your word for it." He pushed off the doorframe and walked toward the kitchen. "You want anything to drink?" Y/n turned her head slightly to glance at him, still not moving from her position on the couch. "Peppermint tea, if you don’t mind." She smiled. "Of course, I’ll be right back." Pedro said with a wink, heading to the kitchen.
A few minutes later, Pedro returned to the living room with a steaming cup of peppermint tea in hand. He plopped down beside her on the couch, taking care not to spill any on the blanket draped across her lap. "Here you go, as ordered." He said, offering her the cup. Y/n slowly sat up and took the tea with a grateful smile. "You’re a lifesaver, you know that?" Pedro leaned back, stretching his long legs out in front of him as he glanced at the TV. All he was met with was her cockpit cam from the simulator for the next race weekend. "So what are you looking for?" He asked. "I kept losing time in turn 4, turn 8 and-" She paused, glancing at her notepad beside her. "Turn 12, so I need to see what I'm doing. I think I'm just not committing to the corner enough." She replied, crossing her arms. "You have to be the only person in motorsport that watches their simulator work outside of the factory or race week."
"More than likely." Y/n said, taking a sip of her tea and sighing. "But I wouldn't change it. I love this job too much." She paused, glancing over at him. "It’s just recovery days like this that remind me of how exhausting it can be." Pedro nodded in understanding, reaching over to gently squeeze her hand. "Well, you’ve earned your rest, no doubt. Just take it easy tonight." Y/n smiled at him, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. "I will. Thanks for being so sweet."
"Always." Pedro said, settling in beside her. He gave her a little nudge. "But next time, maybe a massage?" Y/n grinned. "You're on."

while my wip gently weeps
I'm working on a quality of life update for RJ's clothing. It'll be the same outfit, but everything from his boots to his hat will receive a subtle visual upgrade. His clothing shipped with a few errors and I can tell a lot of detail was lost when his clothing was compressed for release.
I only ever wanted to do proper justice to one of Fallout's best characters; to interpret his mental health, thoughts, worldview and mannerisms to the best of my ability.
RJ has been with me through a lot. I began writing Long Time Running in 2021; those drafts saw me through recovery following a car crash and a cervical cancer-related surgery. When I had no friends and was working 3 jobs from five in the morning 'til midnight, a fictional single dad was my north star even though I didn't have time to write about him. One of the only reasons I posses the courage to keep surviving is because he serves as an example of how to do so.
Back when I began writing the first LTR drafts, updating his in-game clothing was a task I hoped to accomplish. Learning how to mod this past year has granted me the skills required to do so. My fic posting anniversary for Long Time Running is March 20, so I suppose there's no better time than today to reveal the next adventure he's dragging me along for.

Hello! I’m interested to know what your tips are for walking over 10k steps each day. You mentioned that you walk up to 30k and that’s so impressive!
Comfortable shoes: I’ve been known to run about in heels for the day, but I really don’t recommend this and it will wreck your feet. What I try to do, and what I recommend, is finding a pair of well-made flat shoes with good support—proper walking trainers are great for this, but honestly, I usually just wear ordinary boots or sneakers—and then carrying your ‘stylish’ shoes in your bag to change into when you arrive anywhere that requires it. For me, that’s when I arrive into the city centre for the day, as everything is then very close to each other and I don’t need to walk all that far between the few places I go, but then I change back into my sneakers as soon as I leave the city walls to go out or walk back home again. If I’m hiking or walking in the countryside, then I wear my proper walking boots. Whatever works for you.
Compression stockings: this is really a must, and it stops me from ending up with heavy swollen legs at the end of a long day. They also help with my endurance, and just generally prevent my legs from feeling tired and achy when I wake up the next morning. You should get your compression stockings properly fitted according to your measurements, and unless you have circulatory issues, you can buy lighter compression—more heavy-duty compression stockings should be prescribed by a doctor for those with more serious issues with veins and circulation. This is something that I was taught a long time ago by my ballet instructor, and I try to wear compression socks or stockings either when playing sports or during recovery. You don’t need compression stockings to walk 10k+ steps, but I highly recommend it if you want to help yourself and improve your stamina and endurance.
Working up to it: 10k+ steps is easy to do for me, and I regularly walk up to and beyond 30k on days when I have a lot of errands to run, but I’ll not pretend that it’s not a lot of walking for the average person! You can’t start out with these high numbers if you’re currently averaging 2,000 steps each day—you need to work up to it. I always have to go back to basics and work myself back up slowly and patiently if I’ve been recovering from an illness or injury. You also need to pay attention to the sort of ground you’re walking on; I find it easy to walk this high number of steps in my extremely flat and well-paved university town, but back home in Iran, where my hometown is in a mountainous rural region, I definitely walk much less, because I have to be more careful and put more effort behind each step on such difficult terrain. Take everything into account and go easy on yourself.

Post Surgery Visit accomplished!
Everything looks good “right where we left it”
Staples out
Non weight bearing for another 4 weeks minimum
Possibly walking on it at 10 weeks post surgery?!?
Can lose the compression sock on the other leg (apparently that fracture is just… I dunno, not gonna be fixed but will heal?)
Can try a knee scooter if my knee can tolerate it
Can have boot off 3x a day to start gentle mobility exercises on the ankle (“maybe don’t do that if excruciating ”)
Expect 12-18 MONTH recovery
I broke it so low, it’s essentially a leg and ankle fracture
Cannot drive until I’m off opiates during the day

How Compression Recovery Boots Enhance Muscle Recovery?
Imagine this: you’ve just crushed a workout, your muscles are screaming for relief, and you're looking for that magic trick to speed up recovery. Enter compression recovery boots, the superhero of muscle recovery gear!
These boots aren’t just fancy equipment; they’re like a spa day for your legs, helping you bounce back faster and more robust.
Let’s dive into how compression recovery boots can transform your post-workout routine and keep you moving efficiently.
The Science Behind the Boots
So, what makes compression recovery boots so effective? It all comes down to science. These boots use pneumatic compression, which involves inflating and deflating to apply pressure to your legs.
This pressure helps stimulate blood flow and lymphatic drainage, reducing muscle soreness and speeding up recovery.
Think of it as a mini massage that targets deep tissues, helping flush out toxins and deliver essential nutrients to tired muscles.
Boosting Blood Flow for Quicker Recovery
One of the most significant benefits of compression recovery boots is their ability to enhance blood circulation.
After a strenuous workout, your muscles need a lot of oxygen and nutrients to repair themselves.
By improving blood flow, these boots ensure that your muscles get the nutrients they need to recover faster. It’s like giving your muscles a VIP pass to a nutrient-rich recovery party!

Reducing Muscle Soreness and Fatigue
Nobody enjoys the post-workout muscle soreness that makes sitting down feel like a workout. Fortunately, compression recovery boots can help alleviate this discomfort.
By promoting better circulation and reducing muscle stiffness, these boots make it easier to get back to your routine without the dreaded soreness. They help you feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle your next workout with less downtime.
Enhancing Lymphatic Drainage
Our bodies have a natural system for removing waste products, but this system can get overwhelmed after intense exercise. Compression recovery boots assist in this process by boosting lymphatic drainage.
This helps to remove metabolic waste products, reducing swelling and inflammation. It's like giving your body’s waste management system extra help to keep things running smoothly.
Convenience and Comfort Combined
Nobody wants to spend hours on recovery. Compression recovery boots offer a convenient and comfortable solution.
You can use them while lounging on the couch, watching TV, or working from home. They are designed to be easy to use and adjust, ensuring you get the maximum benefits without disrupting your day. It’s recovery made simple and effective!
Who Can Benefit from Compression Recovery Boots?
Whether you're an elite athlete or a weekend warrior, compression recovery boots can benefit anyone who puts their muscles to the test.
They’re perfect for those who experience frequent muscle fatigue, have a physically demanding job, or are recovering from an injury.
Integrating these boots into your recovery routine can enhance your performance and overall well-being.
Incorporating Compression Recovery Boots into Your Routine
To get the most out of your compression recovery boots, use them regularly as part of your post-workout recovery routine.
Aim for sessions of about 20-30 minutes to experience the full range of benefits. Consistent use can help you stay on top of your game and maintain peak performance.
Conclusion: Elevate Your Recovery Game
Incorporating compression recovery boots into your fitness routine is like having a personal recovery assistant.
They help speed up muscle recovery, reduce soreness, and enhance overall well-being. With their ability to boost blood flow, reduce muscle fatigue, and improve lymphatic drainage, these boots are a game-changer for anyone looking to optimise their recovery process.
So, give your muscles the relief they deserve and elevate your recovery game with compression recovery boots.

Nike and Hyperice Launch Innovative Tech-Enabled Boots and Vest to Enhance Athlete Warm-Up and Recovery

Nike and Hyperice have teamed up to create cutting-edge wearable technology designed to help athletes excel throughout training and competition. Combining Nike's expertise in footwear and apparel with Hyperice's advanced recovery technology, the two brands are pushing the boundaries of athletic performance with their latest innovations.
Meet the Nike x Hyperice Boot and Vest
The collaboration has resulted in the Nike x Hyperice boot and vest, two groundbreaking products aimed at revolutionizing athlete warm-up and recovery.
The Nike x Hyperice Boot
The Nike x Hyperice boot is a wearable, mobile high-top shoe that delivers heat and dynamic air-compression massage on demand. This innovative shoe features dual-air Normatec bladders bonded to warming elements, ensuring even heat distribution throughout the upper. This technology drives heat deep into the muscles and tissues of the feet and ankles, enabling faster natural recovery. Athletes have reported feeling lighter and more prepared, as if they've already completed their warm-up before starting their routine.
Athletes can control the heat and compression levels of each shoe with the press of a button, selecting from three distinct levels powered by a battery pack in each insole.
The Nike x Hyperice Vest
The Nike x Hyperice vest targets a variable of performance historically difficult to control: the environment. Utilizing thermoelectric coolers from the Hyperice X line, the vest provides instant heating and cooling without the need for ice or liquid. This allows athletes to precisely adjust their body temperatures during warm-ups and cool-downs.
Equipped with thermal modules and sensors, the vest autonomously monitors and maintains optimal body temperature. An air bladder and pressure sensor ensure the vest fits comfortably while maximizing the effectiveness of the heating and cooling technology.
Athlete-Driven Innovation
"Recovery is an important part of any athlete’s journey, but we’re hearing from athletes that this concept of ‘pre-covery’ is equally as important," says Tobie Hatfield, Senior Director, Nike Athlete Innovation. "The footwear and vest we’ve developed with Hyperice help get the body ready for activity, whether you’re playing for a title or on your feet a lot at work."
LeBron James, a Nike signature athlete, highlights the impact of these innovations: “Taking care of my body has always been an important part of my preparation as a basketball player. From the moment I tried the Nike x Hyperice boots and vest, I knew they were going to change the game for athletes’ warm-up and recovery.”
The Future of Athletic Performance
Nike and Hyperice continue to gather feedback from athletes as they integrate these products into their training and recovery routines. The brands are committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for today’s athletes, with the Nike x Hyperice innovations set to release at a later date.
“Since the inception of Hyperice, we have taken a lot of inspiration from Nike,” says Anthony Katz, Founder and President of Hyperice. “This collaboration is the culmination of years of work between our two brands to deliver innovative footwear and apparel for athletes, enhancing their performance and recovery. And this is just the start.”
Stay tuned for more updates on the Nike x Hyperice products and hear directly from Nike athletes who tested the vest and boots throughout development.
