Common Ground “My approach has always been focused on developing my art rather than working towards a career. All through my childhood years I enjoyed spending my time making things with papier-mâché, stitching, embroidering, drawing, and painting but never saw these interests as culminating into taking up art as a professional career. It was my father who recognised I had many other interests related to the arts. I think getting introduced to the lives of other artists and their ways of thinking inspired and left an impression on my brother Rajiv (Architect Rajiv Saini) and me.” - Reena Kallat, Artist. Reena Saini Kallat (b. 1973, Delhi, India) graduated from ‘Sir J.J. School of Art’, Mumbai in 1996 with a B.F.A. in painting. Her practice - spanning painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation, often incorporates multiple mediums into a single work. She is interested in the role that memory plays - not only what we choose to remember but in how we think of the past. Kallat frequently works with officially recorded or registered names of people, objects and monuments that are lost or have disappeared without a trace, only to get listed as anonymous and forgotten statistics. One of the recurrent motifs in her work has been the rubber stamp, both as an object and imprint, signifying the bureaucratic apparatus, capable at once of confirming as well as obscuring identities. Still very much a work in progress and going through the inevitable ‘ugly duckling’ phase that all of my carvings seem to go through before they’re finished. My ambition with this ‘ode to Grinling Gibbons’ (yes, I know it’s not the most imaginative working title!) is to make it the most dramatically three dimensional necklace I’ve carved yet. I really want the flowers and butterflies to seem to hover, weightless below the wearers collar bone… hopefully you can see this concept slowly emerging through the wood, as rough as it clearly is!! @grinlinggibbons300 Centuries in the Making opened @compton_verney on Saturday, and we wanted to give you a little taste of the exhibition experience. On your way through the park to and from the gallery you'll cross the Upper Bridge (built 1770), guarded by four sphinxes. After entering the exhibition, begin by journeying with Gibbons along a timeline of his life and turbulent times and then turn the corner into the galleries, where you can feast your eyes on: 1. The incredible Kirtlington Panel, abundant with fish and fowl 2. Carved limewood drop with one of Gibbons' iconic lobsters 3. The sinuous head of a life-size horse carved for the Line of Kings in the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London 4. Two films made for the exhibition by Vikki Jenner; the screen here (on the wall behind the horse) shows the production of detailed 3D scans of Gibbons' Crucifixion, at Dunham Massey. 5. Carved picture surround (on loan from Abingdon Town Hall Museum), its mirror reflecting a view of the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge 6. I’m deeply inspired by antique textiles and samplers...this delicate piece was finished in 1837 by Grace Hastwell when she was only 12 years old! Common Ground “I never thought of art as a profession, but a way of existence that’s as natural as breathing,” - Reena Kallat, Artist. For Reena Saini Kallat art has been a means of inquiry as well as a tool for expressing personal and collective concerns. As one of India’s most notable artists, her works span drawing, photography, sculpture and videos that largely dwell on the fluidity of borders and the futility in drawing boundaries when nature itself is boundless. Kallat’s art journey began out of a sense of loss - she lost her mother to cancer early in life. Initially Kallat was keen on a career in medicine, hoping to find a cure for cancer, but as a child Kallat had collected magazine clippings and books on art. It was her father who recognised her talent and urged her to pursue this interest. The 1992 and 2002 riots were turning points for her. Kallat had her first solo exhibition in Mumbai in 1998. Since then, Kallat has travelled all India and the world with her paintings, sculptures, installations and audio-visual works. Her interest in political borders, the pain of forced migration, and divisive national narratives are distinct in her recent works.
