INTRODUCTION :
Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production. There are many disorders that result in hypothyroidism. These disorders directly or indirectly involve the thyroid gland.
WHAT ARE THYROID HORMONES ?
Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland. This gland is located in the lower part of the neck below the Adam’s apple. The gland wraps around the windpipe and is butterfly shaped.
The thyroid gland uses iodine for the production of thyroid hormones. The two most important thyroid hormones are thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which accounts for 99% and 1% of thyroid hormones present in the blood respectively. However the hormone with the most biological activity is T3.Once released from the thyroid gland into the blood a large amount of T4 is converted to T3 – the active hormone that affects the metabolism of the cells.
CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM :
Hypothyroidism is a very common condition. It is estimated that 3% to 5% of the population has some form of hypothyroidism. The condition is more common in women than in men and its incidence increases with age.
Congenital hypothyroidism.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis – Hashimoto is an autoimmune disease in which body’s immune system inappropriately attacks the thyroid tissue. It is 5-10 times more common in women than in men.
Lymphocytic thyroiditis (which may occur after hyperthyroidism)
Thyroid destruction (from radioactive iodine or surgery)
Damage to the pituitary gland.
Radiation treatment.
Severe iodine deficiency.
Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland.
Medications that are used to treat an overactive thyroid(hyperthyroidism) may actually cause hypothyroidism.
 SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM :

Fatigue

Dry, coarse hair
Modest weight gain

Muscle cramps

 DIAGNOSIS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM :
Medical and family history – You should tell your doctor about changes in your health that suggest that your body is slowing down, if you ever had thyroid surgery ,if you’ve ever had radiation therapy to treat cancer, if you’re taking any of the medication like lithium, thalidomide etc.
Physical exam – to look for changes like dry skin, swelling, slower reflexes and a slower heart rate.
Blood tests – TSH test, T4 test.
TREATMENT OF HYPO THYROIDISM :
Thyroxin is administered in all cases of hypothyroidism and is considered the mainstay therapy.
The usual dose in adults is 1.8ug/kg body weight.
Intravenous thyroxin is given in extremely severe hypothyroidism.

Syrup (per 5 mL): 6.25 mg promethazine HCl and 10 mg codeine phosphate with 7% alcohol
FDA Indications/Dosages:
Temporary relief of coughs and upper respiratory symptoms associated with allergies or the common cold: Adults: One teaspoonful (5 mL) every 4-6 hours. Children (6-12 years old): ½ to 1 teaspoonful every 4-6 hours. Children (2-6 years old): ¼ to ½ teaspoonful every 4-6 hours.
Phenergan with Codeine is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
Do not exceed the following dosage in 24 hours:
Adults and children over 6 years of age: 30 mL
2-6 years old weighing 18 kg: 9 mL
2-6 years old weighing 16 kg: 8 mL
2-6 years old weighing 14 kg: 7 mL
2-6 years old weighing 12 kg: 6 mL
Pharmacology/Pharmacokinetics: Promethazine competitively inhibits histamine at the H1 receptor site causing a spasmolytic and decongestant effect. Antihistamines will prevent, but not reverse, histamine mediated reactions. Codeine depresses the cough reflex center in the medulla oblongata. Therapeutic effects begin to occur 15 minutes after administration and lasts for about 3 hours. Peak effects are seen 45-60 minutes after administration.
Drug Interactions: Anticholinergics may decrease effects. CNS depression may increase with alcohol and other CNS depressants. Use with metrizamide may decrease seizure threshold. Barbiturates may decrease actions.
Contraindications/Precautions: Use is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to this drug combination, other phenothiazines, and in patients with lower respiratory tract symptoms (including asthma). Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, coma, jaundice, sleep apnea, seizure disorders, stenosing peptic ulcers, pyloroduodenal obstruction, urinary bladder obstruction due to symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy and narrowing of the bladder neck, increased intracranial pressure, chronic respiratory disease, and in atopic children. Pregnancy Category C.
Adverse Effects: Drowsiness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, orthostatic hypotension, lightheadedness, and dizziness.
Patient Consultation:
May be taken with food or milk if GI upset occurs.
May cause drowsiness. Use caution while operating machinery or when mental alertness is required.
Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
WARNING: This medication may be habit-forming.
Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and children.
Contact a physician if the above side effects are severe or persistent.
If a dose is missed, skip it and return to normal dosing schedule.

Nutraceuticals are significant natural bioactive compounds that offer health and medical benefits to people. The “nutraceuticals” terminology was coined by Dr. Stephen L. De Felice in 1989, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Advancement in Medicine, an American association that promotes medical health research (Catinean et al., 2018). He described a nutraceutical as a food component that promotes health benefits, including disease prevention and treatment by linking nutrition to the pharmaceutical field. Nutraceuticals, commonly known as medical foods, functional foods, designer foods, and nutritional supplements, are product isolated or purified food substances that are usually marketed in therapeutic ways (Sheeshka & Lacroix, 2008). These include nutritional and medicinal functional foods such as milk, cereals, fortified dairy products, supplements, vitamins, herbals, citrus fruits, and more.  
Microbial biotechnology is one of the leading key factors in the development of economically valuable chemical and biological products as well as agricultural and environmental agents with the use of promising microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and microalgae (Liakopoulou-kyriakides & Vázquez, 2011). Microbial production platforms are considered to be an eco-friendly approach for the production of value-added nutraceuticals obtained from simple carbon sources. In this regard, Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are utilized to produce complex and diverse chemicals namely, prebiotics, poly amino acids, phytochemicals, and polysaccharides due to their versatility as cell factories (Wang, Guleria, Koffas & Yan, 2015).  
Nutraceuticals market in the Philippines is currently in its infancy stage due to the dependence on traditional pharmaceutical medicine system by the country’s growing middle class population, which accounts for the majority of the Filipino population. Progress in the nutraceutical industry is evident during the 2012-2017 review period, and is expected to further expand from year 2020 onwards due to the rising awareness of nutraceuticals’ benefits among the youth through media, internet, and medical sources. Food companies are now offering food modernization and modest improvements such as reduced salt or fat levels, less sugar content and the likes. Conversely, pharmaceutical companies are now beginning to generate new medical professionals and pharmacists targeted consumer health compounds. All of these factors will contribute to the expansion of the nutraceuticals market in the Philippines, together with higher revenue generation opportunities in the future.

In order to address kids’ immunity, bone health, cognitive health, and obesity, locally produced nutraceutical products are available which typically include omega-3 fatty acids, yeast fermentates, probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, minerals, and whole grains. Some examples of leading nutraceutical products in the local market include: Cherifer with PGM (Pubertal Growth Maximizer), Centrum multivitamins for kids, PedZinc plus C, Ceelin, and various other nutraceuticals in the form of beverages.  
But, what if your kids refuse to take their nutraceuticals? It’s a known fact that kids hate taking their medicine. So, how would nutraceuticals be appealing to kids? Fear not because there are ways to make this stress-free for you and your children! For one, we should inform the children about the benefits of what they are taking in the most comprehensive way possible. The information has to be appealing for them! Instead of forcing the kids to take the tablet, make them understand why they have to take it in a way they could relate to. No kid, or even adult, would like having things forced onto them without knowing why. Second, find the best nutraceutical which could work for your kids. If they have trouble swallowing tablets, look for flavored chewables. Better yet, give them syrups that would be suitable for their palates. Children would appreciate this option the most, especially with the availability of strawberry flavored syrup that was also a nutraceutical in the market. Because of this, taking medicines would be enjoyable until the children would reach an age that would be mature enough for tablets. Lastly, if your child is too stubborn, find the root of your problem. Based on previous experience, children do not like medicine due to their taste, form, or the fact that their parents are forcing them to. Find a solution based on the problem, and do not forget to let your kids make their own choices! Give them the option of choosing whether they take their medicine before or after taking a shower, in the kitchen or in the bedroom, via cup or syringe. Compromise with your child and reward them, as they can be motivated by incentives. If you are able to find the problem, the solution will follow if you put effort into it. Don’t forget, make taking nutraceuticals fun and creative for your kids!
Nourishment is the process of getting food in our bodies and using it as unrefined materials as fuel for energy, vitamins, and minerals that keep our body functioning well and healthy. Parents should show concern and pay attention over their kids' eating habits because it is their responsibility to ensure that their children would grow up healthy. Here are a few ideas that will encourage your kids to eat their greens; spike up your kids' meals with fresh fruit and vegetables, a variety of food within and between meals will guarantee that your kids get all the nutrients they need. Additionally, a blend of colors and shapes with simple flavors is a good way of attracting and training kids in eating a healthy meal instead of fast food or sweets. Fast food per se is not bad, but it becomes a health risk when it replaces children’s regular meals all the time, as this will lead to deprivation of their nutrients such as vitamins. Furthermore, fatty foods stimulate contractions in the digestive tract, which can either slow down the emptying of the stomach and worsen constipation, or speed up movement, leading to or worsening diarrhea. To prevent your child from experiencing this, you should limit food that is high in fat in their diet and pair fatty foods with high-fiber foods for easier digestion. Always keep in mind that it is vital to get your children an early start on eating healthy meals, to eat in moderation, and refrain from fatty food. These will establish good nutritional habits in your child, and it will become part of their lifestyle for the rest of their life.

Britpicking from afar - over the counter medication edition
Does your character:
Have a headache, cold, general ache or pain, or fever? Paracetamol. Brand names a panadol, anadin, and for children (or adults who can’t swallow tablets) calpol. It is 500mg per tablet, most people take 2. Honestly, it’s basically a cure all. Or at least a treat all.
- The version with codiene in it is cocodamol. Brand name Anadin, Anadin extra (with caffiene in it), panadine, solpadol and sopladiene. These have 8mg of codiene in, any stronger and you need a prescription.
Have inflammation, period pains, general ache or pains with accompaned swelling or a migraine? Ibuprofen or also called ibrufen. Brand name for headaches is nuerofen and nuromol. Children’s version is Nuerofen for Children.
- Period pain specific medication that nobody ever buys cos it’s expensive and you might as well just buy the paracetamol or ibuprofen for between 16p and 99p, is Feminax. There’s also period specific versions of panadol and anadin.
- We also have aspirin, brand name dispirin - for a short while between the late 90s and late 00s, it became prescription only on all strengths. It used to the go to tablets for headaches, until paracetamol took over as the cure all. I don’t know what it’s used for here in the UK, because I only see elderly people buying it but as far as I know, the strength available OTC is not the dose prescribed to prevent strokes, and most people I know use ibuprofen or prescribed strength medications for migraines.
Aches and pains in one specific area? - An ibuprofen based gel called Ibulieve, volterol, deep freeze which is a cooling gel, deep heat which is a gel/cream that heats up.
Stomach issues? Milk of magnesia if you’ve set your stories before the late 1990s, if they have constipation, stomach ache or heart burn. There’s countless modern versions and I think Pepto Bismol is more popular now. Gaviscone for heart burn or acid reflux anytime after the mid 00s. (Stronger stuff available on prescription only) Loperamide/Immodium for diarrhoea and senna for constipation. There’s also fybogel, buscopan IBS and lactulose for the more chronic problems.
Nasty bout of food poisoning? Dioralyte to replace salts and sugars.
Allergies? For tablets, there’s Benadryl, Piriton, or Piriteze which is meant to be the non-drowsy version of piriton but then it doesn’t do anything for hayfever, Loratadine and Clarityn. Then there’s Benadryl nasal spray, bacanase, prinase, optimist allergy eye spray. Then there’s Benadryl for Children Liquid, Piriton Allergy Relief Syrup and a whole slew of shops own versions of each of them.
Ear ache or sudden deafness from impacted earwax? Olive oil (special little bottles with their own droppers), otex and cerumol.

The healthiest way to eat bananas is when the skin has turned almost black. Agreed, they don't look so appetizing, but all their properties are at their maximum at that point - just peel them and toss them in the blender. And did you know that you can freeze bananas - peel them, cut them in half, package and freeze. They replace the ice in your banana smoothies recipe, keeping it cold and putting less of a load on your blender. Most people use milk to make smoothies, but you can use soy milk, ice-cream, rice milk, chocolate milk and perhaps a drizzle of honey or maple syrup for sweetness. You can buy frozen berries out of season and add a handful to your own recipes for banana smoothies.
Here's one your children will love - peanut butter with your own banana smoothies recipe and this is enough for two. Two frozen bananas, ten ounces of milk (try almond milk) and two tablespoons of peanut butter. Whirl them all together in the blender and hey presto.
Fresh strawberries added to your own recipes for banana smoothies are delectable in fresh berry season. This amount is for one adult - one whole banana, a cup of sliced fresh strawberries and eight ounces of cold milk (try soy milk here). Blend on medium speed, taste and add more milk if it's too thick. Try blueberries or raspberries in your recipes for banana smoothies - delicious. Take your frothy creation out on the deck and enjoy watching the birds feed their chicks.

So, your basic ingredients for your banana smoothies recipe are bananas and milk or a substitute for milk. Add whatever fruit or juices you like, merrily blend it all together and know that although it seems sinful, it's not a "guilt food;" you're enjoying something which is crammed with nutrients, tastes wonderful, elevates your mood - and it's breakfast on the run because you can take it to work in your covered cup.
Okay. One more. This is one of those special recipes for banana smoothies for two people. Two ripe bananas, two scoops of vanilla ice-cream (the good stuff), quarter teaspoon vanilla, eight ounces of whole milk, three teaspoons of sugar, whipped cream and a just a sprink of cinnamon - or better - a couple of blurps of Bailey's. Blend till smooth, share and enjoy. Don't waste this on kids, this is for adults!

Adulting 101: Grocery Shopping, Smarter
I have roomed with way too many freshmen who lived on fries and takeout because they, per their own admission, had no clue how to buy groceries. And I know a bunch of people are probably in the same boat. So I’m going to take you through the issues I often had to help my tiny baby roomies with, and drop some extra tips on you that I’ve figured out while living away from home. Feel free to add your own!
PRODUCE BUYING (yes, you need to eat a plant every now and then)
Canned and frozen veggies are just as nutritious as fresh, sometimes moreso. Nutrient content degrades as the vegetable sits after picking, and if you live somewhere that your produce has long shipping times, it’s actually less nutritious than canned or frozen. In canned vegetables, look for the “low sodium” marker. Canned and frozen also last a million times longer than fresh, and are WAY cheaper. Buy the frozen broccoli and thank yourself later when you have Netflix money left over.
Pro tip: when using canned veggies, rinse them a few times. They now taste fresh, ready to cook or ready to eat straight. You’re welcome.
When shopping for canned fruit, pick ones that are packed in 100% juice, not syrup. That syrup not only makes things way less healthy, it makes it pretty slimy too. Plus the juice is nice in smoothies, if you choose to save it.
If you buy fresh, do so in quantities that look too small. Get what you think you need, then put a little back. You always need less than you think. If you DO buy large quantities and they start to look funny, cut them up and freeze them.
When buying fresh, get some that are ripe now, and some that need a few days. This way you have some that will last a bit longer rather than trying to scramble to eat 3 avocados within 24 hours.
Buy onions in bulk, chop them up all at once, and freeze them. Only cry once, my friends. They cook much faster when they were previously frozen, and they last ages. Plus a sack of chopped frozen onions makes a good makeshift ice pack for twisted ankles and sore backs, and it won’t hurt to thaw and re-freeze a few times.
Here’s a cheat-sheet for how long produce lasts and how to store them. This should give you a good idea of how much to buy. It is very conservative, tho, so don’t panic. For instance, it says tomatoes only last about 3 days, but I’ve gotten a week and a half out of them if you don’t refrigerate them and keep them away from other fruit. Use it as a guide, and google some other “produce cheat sheets” to get an idea of your time window.
When buying frozen vegetables, get the big resealable packages. They’re cheaper per ounce, and you don’t have to worry about whether you can eat all of it at once. If you have limited freezer space, however, just get some freezer ziploc bags and store the extras in that. Twist-tying the opened, non-resealable bag will just freezer burn your food.
I know you think you eat a lot of potatoes, but you, an individual, do not eat enough potatoes to warrant that 5 or 10 pound sack that’s always on sale. Pass it by and go to the individual, select-a-piece display. You’ll thank me when you aren’t cleaning up rotten potato goo in a few weeks because you only got halfway through the sack and just couldn’t eat any more potatoes.
MEAT BUYING
Buy in bulk, keep out only what you’ll use within a day, and freeze the rest into individual serving size packages. You can get SO many meals out of a tray of chicken breasts, so buy as big a package as you have freezer room for.
Check the yellow-tag/clearance section. You find amazing deals there! Just freeze it right away if you aren’t cooking the whole thing for dinner that night. Yellow-tag is always because it’s nearing its sell-by date.
Don’t feel like you have to cook meat in whatever size or form it comes.  Buy big honking roasts and cut your own chops/steak from it. Buy that tray of chicken breasts and cut each piece into stew chunks or strips . Get the bone-in stuff and fillet it yourself. Think big when buying, small when storing, and then use that knife block your mom gave you and slicey slice things down to an individual size, or into something new. (Pork roast into chunks makes for a great, cheap stir fry.) Pop the rest into freezer ziploc bags and take it out the day before you need it. (Thaw in-fridge, please, it’s much safer.)
Ground turkey acts the same as ground beef in most recipes, and is generally cheaper unless you live in beef country. Substitute and save.
GRAINS
As with produce, buy your flour and sugar in much smaller quantities than you think you need. That 2lb sack doesn’t look like very much, but it’s a lot less likely to attract pests if it’s not sitting there for months while you struggle to use it, and it’s also much more manageable so it doesn’t get everywhere while cooking or storing. (You’ll also make fewer sweets if you don’t have a huge bag of sugar sitting in your cabinet getting clumpy and worrying you.)
Mac-and-cheese IS a viable grain option, and if you dump in some broccoli and/or chicken chunks, it’s a full meal. It’s cheap, but less sodium than ramen, so try switching it up. Also try to look for mac-and-cheese made with whole and/or enriched flour if you eat a lot of it, you’ll be slighly less likely to get constipated from it.
Premade loaf bread has a butt-ton of sugar in it. This is not only not as good for you, but makes the bread more likely to mold quicker! So look for low-sugar options. (Or make your own bread, it’s not too hard.)
DAIRY
Unless you’re like me and drink a crapton of milk (doctor’s orders, don’t judge), buy your milk in half-gallons. You can always grab another one if you run low between regular grocery shopping days, but you don’t want to have the experience of going to pour your cereal and getting your appetite ruined by the smell of rotten milk.
If you can’t or don’t want to drink milk, most milk alternatives are now fortified with the same nutrients that animal milk has. Don’t skip the dairy recommendation because you don’t like animal milk, get yourself some soy or almond milk and get your daily calcium intake!
Cheese lasts a long time, but will get dry, hard, and powdery if not stored properly. Look for, you guessed it, resealable packages.
Most of the time, block cheese is cheaper than grated and you can just grate it yourself at home. But always check the price-per-ounce, it’s usually located in the corner or on the side of the tag.
Yogurt lasts longer than you think it will. Buy in the big tubs, not individual cups. It’s cheaper, and you can pick how much you want.
SHOPPING TIPS
Shop by what’s on sale to save money. Have an idea of what you want when you go in, but be flexible with your choices. For instance, I would go in with a shopping list that had an item that was simply “sale meat.” I had meal ideas planned out that I could replace or alter based on what was on sale at the store. No chicken on sale, but the tofu was marked down? We’re having tofu stir fry on Wednesday instead! Apples on sale? You had planned to get bananas, but if the apples are cheaper you can either get some of both or just do apples. Check the sale papers or online ads beforehand to see what kind of specials they have, and try planning meals around that.
Speaking of, CHECK THE SALE PAPERS! Save those mailers, compare prices, and see which store has what you’re after. Google the store’s website and see if they list their specials online.
Have a basic plan for what you’re going to do with your purchases. Don’t just pick up a bunch of kohlrabi “to try” if you don’t have a plan. It could be as simple as “I’m going to look up a recipe later today and I’m moving Tuesday’s dinner to next week so I can make this new thing on Tuesday.” But don’t just go “huh, that’s neat” and buy it without consciously planning when to use it. Or you’re going to end up with rotten kohlrabi and money wasted. Be aware of what you’re buying, and tell yourself how you’re going to use it before you put it on your list, or in your cart if it’s a last minute decision.
Don’t shop hungry. Simple idea, you’ve probably heard it before, but you’ll come home with impulse buys and a headache if you shop on a very empty stomach.
Make a list. You ARE going to forget that you really needed rice if you don’t put it on that list. I know you think you’ll remember, but you won’t. Crossing the threshold of a supermarket completely wipes your RAM. Write that stuff down somewhere and take it with you.
Be willing to shop around. I know Walmart is convenient, and it has asparagus on sale, but if the Kroger also has an amazing sale on the salad greens that you were planning on buying, try to make the effort to get to both stores. Nobody said saving money and eating well was easy, but it is worth it. Unless one store has price match, then just take your ad in and do the shopping at that store.
Try to have a buddy. Grocery shopping can be exhausting and stressful, but a friend can make it easier, and keep you sane. They can also help steer you away from impulse buys just by their very presence. It’s a lot harder to justify the checkout candy bar when your friend is right there, even if they don’t say anything. (Or you could get both of you a candy bar, if you’ve got the cash for it.)
Try to pick a single grocery day and plan for it consistently. Weekly, biweekly, whatever is best for you, just plan a day to do your in-depth shopping. Shopping piecemeal is a good way to spend more money than necessary, and to make sure you forget stuff. (You may have to make fill-in trips between big shopping days, but plan the big ones and try to put off as much as you can until then. But stopping for milk because you ran out won’t break the bank, so don’t worry about doing an occasional quick-stop.)
STORAGE TIPS
Ziploc bags are your friend, but make sure you know what kind you’re getting. Only specifically labeled “freezer bags” should be used in the freezer, or you risk your food getting icy and freezer burnt. Also, look for the store-brand zipper bags, they work just as well.
Label everything you put into the freezer if it’s not in the original package. You’re going to have days where you can’t tell if that’s chicken or tofu. Most freezer zipper bags have a space just for labeling. Keep a kitchen sharpie handy and label stuff. Also put the date on it, and use things within a year of freezing.
Get canisters. There are some cheap ones, even, but get SOMETHING. Put your flour and sugar in the canisters. It will last longer, and you don’t risk the bugs. You may think your apartment is safe, but bug season comes for us all in the end, and those little turds go right for a folded-over sack of flour, I swear.
Keep a list on the front of your freezer of everything that’s in there. Add to the list as you put stuff in, and cross stuff off as you take it out. That way you don’t have to dig to know if you have any more of those frozen peaches you like in your smoothies. Nor will you forget for a million years the bag of stew meat you had intended to use. Small magnetic whiteboards are particularly good for this purpose. (Also consider doing that for each major storage area--fridge, cabinets, pantry, etc-- if you routinely forget what’s in there. You could even tape it to the inside of the cabinet door so nobody else sees your bad memory.)
Don’t store potatoes and onions next to each other. They’ll both sprout.
Keep bananas away from all other produce. They’re naughty ethylene fiends that will spoil your tomatoes just for fun. That said, stick a banana in with an under ripe fruit and it’ll be ready in a day or two.
Take your produce out of the little plastic bags unless they need to ripen a bit more.
Go through your fridge completely once a month. Take everything out, check the dates, sniff it, and throw out old/rotten/nasty stuff. Go through your freezer once every 2 or 3 months. Reorganize your stacks, and double check your content list is current.
