Bubi Canal, Into the Gloaming

Every work of art is a universe into its own. Into the Gloaming, the recent exhibition by Bubi Canal at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, presented a collection of images stemming from play, symmetry, and intuition, radiating the glow of twilight and the spirit of presences—small worlds of inviting light, darkness, and color.

Receptive to impulses from an ongoing process of examining images and mythologies, Bubi creates photo and video works from an intuitive place. On weekday mornings, when we meet at cafés in Brooklyn to do our respective computer tasks, he’ll often comment on mysterious places and objects dreamt the night before.

From notebooks filled with special words and image files of characters, locales, and objects of interest, Bubi might suddenly ‘feel’ an object or a piece of vintage clothing, for instance, and the process of creating ensues.

I’ve witnessed firsthand this creative process. When our friend Belén Prieto posed in front of metal rings in a Bushwick playground for the piece Panorama, Bubi minded the placement of props and photographing while I held the flash at an exact distance.

Working with symmetry and color, Bubi deals with unexpected elements that emerge during photo sessions, searching for a placement that transforms. Simple objects acquire an otherworldly quality through context and customization—the more surprise, the better.

I had the pleasure of modeling two characters for the show: Tártaro, a nod to ancient warriors, and the Ojáncano, a mythical Cantabrian character—costumed by Spanish designer Chaumen—that also appears in the Cosmovision video.

Photo sessions for this show often took place spontaneously: when the sunset seemed dramatic enough. For the Tártaro piece, the last image created for the exhibition, I was wearing a tight-fitting mask rigged with hair, and a Björn Borg vintage sweater. We did three sessions to get just the right image, Bubi adjusting the hair often (one day was windy and cold) while I stood still and tilted my head slowly. Even the slightest change of angle would alter the expression of the character.

To attend the opening, Lia Munch and I flew to Cincinnati together—what an adventure! We bolted around the city with Bubi tending to last-minute errands (especially the costume for Special Visitor, the owl character who made a guest appearance), visited the incredible Casablanca Vintage shop, and checked out local eateries.

On the night of the opening, I sensed the Zaha Hadid-designed CAC building was a fitting, expressionist setting for the show, contributing to its magical feel with enticing perspectives and texture.

Light Installation Art Brings Every Single Particle to Life

Light installation art mesmerizes our senses, enchants the surrounding environment. There are not many types of art styles that catch our imagination like it. We find ourselves moving along with light passing through different shapes and catching reality at each step of the way. The artwork seems a riddle. You wouldn't be able to comprehend anything till light breaks through it. It works as different pieces of the puzzle to fit everyone into place. Isn't it amazing?

1. Light Installation Art and Breaking the Theme Layer by Layer

Light installation art breaks every layer of the artwork to reflect on multiple layers in an individual and collective form. Artists expect the audience to work on each aspect of the artwork and build a unique understanding while they pass through each level. The participation would have a significant impact on the outcome. Light installations art has become relatively popular lately. It has a huge fan following. A new breed of artists is also experimenting with it.

The role of the light catches the imagination. The audience feels inclined towards the flow of light. The audience interprets and intercepts the thoughts of the artist. In this journey, they come up with their thoughts. It's an on-going process as they continue to merge deeper to get to the bottom.

2. Light Installation Art and Imagining New Boundaries

Light installation art has brought a new wave of thought-interception. The audience becomes far more engaged in it than they expect. They've got a strong liking for the light installations art. The world of art has become far more experimental. The artists and audiences have a kind of mutual agreement to expand their mind and its boundaries. The contemporary art installation has helped to bring both sides together.

The audience has found different types of installation art an exciting prospect to bring a positive change to their lives. They could see themselves in a different light. The contemporary art installation puts their perspective under the lens and expects them to see through it. The reality appears different. The lens is the theme or subject presented by the artist. It could trigger a sharp response. There are chances you might feel pressured or relieved to have come to an understanding.

The installation art draws more audience in the public and private domain. The contemporary art installation in public space is the right example. It catches the audience off-guard to have something of the artistic value holding a simple question. What seems a simple light installations art guides them further into deeper layers once they begin to participate. There are different types of installation art to ignite a reaction among us.
