This may be a holiday week, but for us it's still a chance to highlight standout new releases that support the resilience and optimism we want for 2023. Thus, Njideka Akunyili Crosby's "The Beautyful Ones," Series #7 (2018) from 'To Begin Again: Artists and Childhood,' published to accompany the exhibition currently on view at @icaboston surveying the ways artists have reflected on and contributed to notions of childhood from the early twentieth century to the present. The editors write: "Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s portraits of Nigerian youth, built from a layered ground of historical, popular and personal photographs transferred to canvas, stage the interactions between sociohistorical conditions and the individual that are at the heart of human development. Her young figures return the viewer’s gaze with an uncanny self-possession and wisdom beyond their years." Artists include Ann Agee, John Ahearn, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Francis Alÿs, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Brian Belott, Jordan Casteel, Lenka Clayton, Allan Rohan Crite, Henry Darger, Karon Davis, Robert Gober, Jay Lynn Gomez, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Duane Hanson, Mona Hatoum, Sharon Hayes, Ekua Holmes, Mary Kelly, Paul Klee, Justine Kurland, Helen Levitt, Tau Lewis, Glenn Ligon, Oscar Murillo, Rivane Neuenschwander, Berenice Olmedo, Charles Ray, Faith Ringgold, Deborah Roberts, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Rachel Rose, Heji Shin, Sable Elyse Smith, Becky Suss, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Cathy Wilkes and Carmen Winant. Copublished by @delmonico_books Edited with text by @jeffreydeblois & @rutherickson Foreword by #jillmedv. Text by @sirjoshbennett Anna Craycroft, Anne Higonnet, @valeria_luiselli Interviews with @naimajoy @lacachepli @sable_elyse @mlukeles & @carmen.winant @njidekaakunyilicrosby #njidekaakunyilicrosby #thebeautyfulones #tobeginagain #artistsandchildhood https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmwvd9LJLOU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“The Beautyful Ones” Series #, 2018
Acrylic, color pencil, and transfers on paper, 59 7/8 in.× 42 in
The universe Nigerian-American Njideka Akunyili Crosby depicts in her work is, according to her, neither Nigeria nor America, but some other space, the space that every immigrant occupies. Akunyili Crosby creates colourful collage paintings which weave together intimate moments with commercial images from Nigeria, and reference Nigeria’s history and postcolonial present. The paintings live and breathe her trans- and multicultural fine arts fascination and identity. Akunyili Crosby became the talk of the contemporary art world when the price of her work soared dramatically. Last year, her pieces went from selling for around $100.000 to selling for more than $3 million, clearly demonstrating she is one of the most popular artists today. https://magazine.artland.com/30-popular-contemporary-artists/

Credit from @artfriconn Hook, Line and Papier September art challenge All artists interested to take on the challenge of making a drawing or poem/short story every day for the entire month of September (30 pieces in 30 days) should signify their interest, by sliding into our Dm! Each day has a unique theme for all participating artists. Herein, we are challenged to think beyond the cliché, beyond the constraint of style/technique to enhance our individual creative expressivity. The goal is to improve our drawing skills, enhance our creative intelligence and develop positive drawing habits. Depending on the success of this drill, we intend to exhibit the works sometime in October. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #njidekaakunyilicrosby #njidekaakunyili #artfricon #artafricaconnect #richardbeaversgallery ##AfricanArt #AfricanArtist #ContemporaryArt #ContemporaryArtist #ContemporaryAfricanArt #AfricanContemporaryArt #ContemporaryNigerianArt #traditionalart #mask #news #nigerianart #art #artblog #southafrica @tonia_nneji @chi.gozie https://www.instagram.com/p/B1ubU3MA47N/?igshid=jrl6es6kg62

Njideka Akunyili Crosby's 'Dwell: Me, We' (2017) is reproduced from ‘Women Painting Women,' published by @delmonico_books to accompany the exhibition currently on view at @themodernfw From the book: "Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s ‘Dwell' … examines the dichotomies of the diasporic immigrant’s notion of self, revolving especially around displacement and integration. The artist uses the layering of materials, including paint and collaged fabric and paper, to conjure a complex merging of cultures and layering of selfhood. Born in Nigeria, the artist moved to the United States at sixteen and is now married to an American man. The interplay between Nigerian and American imagery in the work suggests that identity is shaped by duality. In ‘Dwell’, there is a diversity of imagery, political and personal, that relates to her birth country and to the US. The painted bobble head portrait-within-a-portrait of Colin Kaepernick, the American civil rights activist and NFL quarterback, and the image of Angela Davis in the collaged “rug” beneath the artist’s feet denote heroic figures on the one hand but also the endemic racism that comes with living in the US.” Edited with text by Andrea Karnes. Preface by Marla Price. Text by Emma Amos, Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson. Read more via linkinbio. @njidekaakunyilicrosby #njidekaakunyilicrosby #dwellmewe #womenpaintingwomen #womenpainters #portraiture @faithringgold @andrea.m.karnes @lornasimpson https://www.instagram.com/p/CePElF_pEM3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A most interesting conversation yesterday between @NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby and author & writer @SiddharthaMitter about Njideka’s work and her series of portraits “The Beautyful Ones”, on the occasion of the publication of the accompanying monograph published by @VictoriaMiroGallery on the occasion of the exhibition at #VictoriaMiroGallery in Venice concurrent with this year’s #VeniceBiennale #MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes #SiddharthaMitter, who authored a new essay for the book reflected with Akunyili Crosby on the series’ complex history and weaved together the social, cultural, personal, and political strands of its making. For her ongoing series “The Beautyful Ones”, #NjidekaAkunyiliCrosby paints portraits of children, including members of her own family, derived from personal photographs. More recently, the series has focused on images taken during her frequent visits to Nigeria, where she lived until the age of sixteen. Hosted by the @StudioMuseum Harlem in the auditorium of the @WhitneyMuseum introduced by both respective museum directors #AdamWeinberg and @ThelmaGolden. #njidekaakunyilicrosby #TheBeautyfulOnes #siddharthamitter #adamweinberg #thelmagolden #studiomuseum #whitneymuseum @victoriamirogallery @glennscottwright #blackportraiture #blackbeauty #beauty #blackness #blackexcellence #nigeria #nigerianart #contemporaryafricanart #africancontemporaryart #africanamerican #contemporaryblackart #contemporaryart #artlover #artcollector #artcurator #artadvisory #artadvisor #destineeross @desti.knee & #joakimvonditmar 📸 of myself w Njideka Akunyili Crosby & @GloriCohen by @jasonwallacestudio (at Whitney Museum of American Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2M_qQaFY2C/?igshid=1t7h441biemdf
